Dentsu Africa CEO, Dawn Rowlands recently announced a bold move to invest 30% in black-owned out of home media, signalling the company's commitment to growing the OOH media sector. The investment is specifically targeted at small and medium-sized black-owned OOH media owners.Donald Mokgale, Business Director of Dentsu SSA, elaborated on the company's efforts, stating that they are investing, upskilling, and taking real action to promote diversity. They are using technology and an interactive, easy to navigate platform that empowers black-owned OOH media businesses and offers them a place to transact. As part of their commitment, Dentsu is dedicating 30% of their overall OOH spend to these platforms. However, creating this investment and platform was not an overnight success. Dentsu had to gain a thorough understanding of the space and the challenges faced by black-owned OOH media owners. One of the problems was that these owners lacked access to agencies, relationships, and context, which hindered their access to the market. This led to a disconnect in the industry, and dentsu was unable to access some of the strategically relevant sites that these owners had.To address these issues, dentsu partnered with Lukhanyo Dyosopu, founder of Light-tech Media Solutions, who shared the same values and commitment to promoting diversity, empowerment, and skills development in the industry. Together, they created a tech-based business platform that empowers and transforms the OOH industry for SME media owners. The platform, OOH Marketplace, is an easy-to-use and accessible platform that solves industry problems. It enables media owners who have no agency networks, relationships, or access to the market to upload their inventory and make it available to client and agency personnel in real-time. Media agencies can access real-time site availability, option inventory, negotiate rates, book inventory directly with site owners, and receive one campaign invoice that consolidates multiple media owners. The benefits of OOH Marketplace include ease of use, efficiency, transparency, accountability, and market access for SME media owners. Dentsu pledges to invest and drive transformation for small to medium black-owned media owners while continuing to support larger global entities. For dentsu, it is not an either-or situation, but both. The company aims to build an industry led by excellence, not by colour or BEE scores. This approach ensures value and innovation, pushing the industry forward. In conclusion, dentsu's commitment to black-owned OOH media owners is not just about being black but about promoting excellence, value, and innovation. The OOH Marketplace is an example of how information and technology can drive the industry forward and offer access to a wider audience.

South African retailers traditionally look forward to Black Friday because of the potential to drive strong additional sales and increase their revenues. But Black Friday has not been the same since the pandemic; this year, record levels of load shedding and a difficult economic situation muddy the picture even more.

Ingrid von Stein, host of Biz Insights connects with Gerhard le Roux, Capital Connect to find out more about the company and how they work with SME's, and delves into ways retailers can maximize on their sales, not just for Black Friday, but beyond.

Research commission by Capital Connect-commissioned forecast that additional retail sales from the promotional period will be nearly 25% weaker than they might have been in a year with more stable power supply, indicating that this year.

With fierce competition and a cash-strapped consumer, retailers have to be nimble and innovative to get their share of billions of rand in Black Friday spending. Le Roux further discusses some of the key trends shaping consumer behaviour, how they will affect Black Friday retail sales, and some of the ways retailers can respond. Furthermore he sheds light on how leading retailers are innovating to grow, despite the tough economic conditions and key tactics for retailers who haven’t already moved into top gear for Black Friday and the festive season.

South Africa is facing a bigger crisis than just load-shedding; we have children as young as 6 addicted to porn! How are we dealing with this, and how are our social workers and organisations working in the child trauma space able to navigate this mine filled landscape, whilst still over-burdened and almost burnt out post 2 years of lock-down.

On the 5th and 6th of October 2022, Jelly Beanz, a non-profit organization established in 2010, supporting children and families who have experienced trauma, abuse and neglect, in partnership with UNICEF, will be hosting their 13th annual Child Trauma Conference. The theme for 2022 is - Trauma in Children and Adolescents: Finding a beacon of hope in uncharted waters and bringing together our social workers into a single place to help them deal with empathy fatigue, burn-out and giving them tools and new techniques to help them grow and continue to be of service to our children.

Ingrid von Stein, host of Business Insight on www.ebizradio.com caught up with Edith Kriel, CEO of Jelly Beanz to find out more about the current landscape in SA, how our social workers are coping and what will be covered and shared at the conference.

Setting the scene: “The Child Trauma Conference is a platform where the consequences of Covid19 and the impact on child protection and mental health will be explored by identifying what creative, on-the-ground African ideas, responses and inspirations were developed during the pandemic, which can be taken back to communities for up-scaling,” explains Edith Kriel, Executive Director of Jelly Beanz. “Delegates will be leaving with skills and capacities enhanced within a nurturing environment for engagement, interaction and multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral collaboration. The conference is intent on taking much needed care of the 250 practitioners and stakeholders that worked so hard during the pandemic, who themselves are now need of care and being appreciated!

Despite commitment to human and child rights treaties (The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of Children) Africa remains challenged by high levels of child rights violations, including all forms of abuse and exploitation, trafficking, and involvement in armed conflict either as perpetrators of violence (child soldiers as this is only a SA conference – maybe we should take the armed conflict out? and gang members) or as victims of armed conflict.

Violence not only has a profound impact on the development potential of children, but also increases the possibility that victims will make poor behavioural and relationship choices when they are adults. The cost of child abuse to the South African economy alone is estimated to be in the order of R173 billion (Fang, Zheng, Fry, Ganz, Casey, Hsiao and Ward, 2017)[1] do you think this stat might be too old? This drain on the economy further emphasizes the need for an appropriate response to the urgent need to both prevent and respond to violence against children.

“African children were extremely vulnerable before Covid-19,” says Kriel. “The Covid19 pandemic has impacted every aspect of children’s lives, and this has significantly exacerbated all these challenges. As a result of the pandemic and lockdown we are faced with more than 60% of South African children living below the poverty line, reliant upon a national school feeding scheme as their only means of receiving a nutritious meal a day. Add to this increased levels of physical and sexual abuse, cyber bullying, substance abuse and rising levels of children being sexually exploited on line as well as children themselves watching pornography which leads to further abuse of children, it is no surprise that suicide is the second leading cause of death for ages 15yrs to 24yrs!” can we change this last sentence – I am not sure why it makes me uncomfortable, but surprise and suicide don’t belong in the same sentence (I realise I may be oversensitive)

The current reality for our children and youth is that many now suffer from mental health crises, with little to no support available to provide relief. And we know that our most vulnerable children will have fewer opportunities to get help for their mental health challenges.

Children’s physical, emotional and cognitive health is of paramount importance to the future of South? Africa. This pandemic has placed even further layers of distress and trauma. Adults and communities which may have been able to provide some comfort or reassurance to vulnerable children before, are themselves now stressed further on multiple levels. For more information about the conference or how to attend, please visit https://www.childtraumaconferenceafrica.org/

We have the mind-set that self-promotion is self-serving, and therefore distasteful. Even if we attempt to talk about our accomplishments and take credit for our success, doing this with confidence and conviction is challenging. Why? How do we develop this skill then?

It is important to see that self-promotion is a leadership skill. It is your responsibility to talk about what you and your team have achieved, not only for your own benefit, but also for the team and the company. It’s how to create influence. It’s how you sell your ideas across the organization. It’s the basis of building relationships with key stakeholders and gaining access to the power networks.

Kevin Britz is joined by Meenakshhi Iyer the founder of NorthStar Solutions and they discuss self-promotion as a leadership skill. HUMILITY IS NOT THINKING LESS OF YOURSELF, IT'S THINKING OF YOURSEL LESS!

How you speak and treat yourself is exactly how you will speak and treat those who work and live with you. Self- promotion is an important leadership skill. When you get outside of your comfort zone and talk about yourself, you learn how to inspire others to engage in your work. Real change happens when you bring other people along for the journey.

If psychologists say that it takes just 21 days to embed a new habit or behaviour, then 24 months of lockdown, and working from home, is going to entrench new learnings and behaviours that are irreversible. Couple this with the fact that the pandemic unleashed the tragic loss of life and/or loss of income, and the result is a deep introspection of what we really want out of life. In essence we’ve all, unwittingly, been faced with an existential crisis.

This has manifested in more immediate trends like: Semigration, Revenge Travel, the Great Resignation and the Anti-work Movement.

But these are just the tip of an iceberg - A workforce revolution has been unleashed and if your company’s current concern is still focused on “adapting to a hybrid workforce”, then you will be blindsided by this revolution. The change we have embarked on cannot be underestimated.

The “future of work” has been brought forward and is colliding with companies struggling to meet the velocity of change that took place during the pandemic.

What leadership prioritised in 2019 now looks very different, post pandemic.

This trend briefing exposes the blind spots that many companies have, including: * Underestimating the ripple effect of this Life Audit and how it has changed the priorities of a workforce. * Reengineering rewards & benefits to create a post pandemic company culture. * Switching from a location centric mindset to a human centric mindset. * The danger of a “two speed organisation” and nurturing a sense of belonging. * The very different skill sets managers now have to master. * Lessons we can learn from the new Gen Z workforce.

This trend briefing is specifically designed for all business leaders (CEOs to COOs), senior managers, administrators and all HR practitioners who have had to adapt to a post-pandemic world of work. Presented by Dion Chang

The Western Cape is seeking its independence from the rest of South Africa. Is this possible and how will this be achieved? CapeXit, is a registered NPO and NOT a political party (the name capexit on the previous ballot papers was another political party who decided and was allowed to us the name as their abbreviation).

Ingrid von Stein was joined Des Palm, one of the 4 directors of this NPC to find out more about CapeXit, its vision and goals. In order to call for a referendum for change 1.6 million signatures of support are needed in the Western Cape. Currently they have just over 825 000 and are gaining support at a rapid rate. You may have seen or heard over the weekend that a number of countries are now seeking their independence from the United Kingdom as well.

The vision for CapeXit is to have the Western Cape Region of South Africa declared as an Independent Country. You may ask how can this be possible? The steps are as follows:

  • Section 235 of the South African Constitution
  • International Law: Article 1 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights
  • Article 20 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights
  • Various other conventions undersigned by the South African Government

A referendum on the Western Cape Independence calls for independence so that this new independent country can:

  • Build a secure and prosperous new nation
  • To eliminate poverty and unemployment
  • Eliminate racism and discrimination
  • Eliminate the current Tax system
  • Eliminate crime and drug abuse
  • Raise the standard of education
  • To give power to all communities

How you may ask? By implementing a direct democracy using the Swiss Canton System and by becoming a tax haven using the TEAL system, which is an acronym for Total Economic Activity Levy.

The idea, in its most simple form, is that instead of heavily taxing income, profits and all the plethora of sources available to the modern state, with all their costs, to the state and the tax-payers, and all the exceptions and special considerations (meaning that if you have sufficient access to the tax system you may be exempted from all or part of a tax), instead of all that complexity, everyone pays a small percentage of their activity in the economy.

This may appear complicated until you realise that all the major economic activity of an economy pass through the banking system. By levying a very small percentage of each transaction, of each and every deposit and payment of each and every bank account in the economy, you collect an enormous sum of money.

What does being a good leader mean to you? Join Mpume-Ncube-Daka as she chats candidly with Dr Thembi Xulu, CEO of South African National AIDS Council.

Dr. Thembi Xulu, a Medical doctor, and a public health professional by training. She holds a diploma in obstetrics and another one in HIV/AIDS medicine, this was driven by the love that HIV shouldn't be transferred to unborn babies by their mothers. She studied for a Master’s in public health and management. She joined the board of directors at the age of 30, and she went to the Institute of Directors to equip herself. She is a special kind of Dr who is skilled in governance in the non-profit sector. She is currently the CEO of the South African National AIDS Council, as well as the Chairperson of the South Africa Global Fund Country Coordinating Mechanism.

Our conversation today is around leadership and for Dr. Thembi leadership is a blessing that was given to her and allows her to build, grow and create other leaders. This means she has to create an environment that enables others to emerge as leaders by being able to express ideas that are explored in the best interest of the organisation. For her, leadership means being clear on roles and goals and ensuring that her team is confident to express their ideas in a safe space where they know they are protected and covered by her. Dr. T also shares that furthermore, leadership for her also means that as much as she may be clear of where her and the team are headed, she can't be too rigid in how she approaches things, thus she will make changes along the way as best as she could to the benefit of all involved.

Dealing with loss and grief is something all people at some stage have gone through. Have you ever wondered what the impact loss or death has on our children?

Lindi Tshabangu, host of Word of Mouth, connects with Melini Moses, who together with her husband, lead a church in Johannesburg, South Africa. She is an award winning Reporter and News Editor at the South African Broadcasting Corporation. Her past few years as a Pastor’s wife and the mother of two precious PK’s (Pastor’s kids) has been both a great challenge and an amazing blessing. Most of all, its opened her eyes to what Pastor’s families have to sacrifice every single day, the limitless love they need to have for others and the constant pressure they face trying to balance family life, church demands and for many, full time jobs.

Here are ten practical steps you can take to help your children through their grief : * Encourage conversation about their loved one who has passed. Let them share with you their favourite memories, from a trip to the beach to a chocolate waffles. * Children need concrete ways in which to express their emotions. Help them plant a memorial garden or write messages on stones that can be placed in a pot in the garden. * Acknowledge their moments of grief. Hold them and say “It’s OK baby, we all miss Pa.” Stay in the moment. Encourage them, letting them know they are loved. Answer their questions as best as you can. Stay age appropriate. Remember, it’s OK for them to see you crying. It makes them feel safe, knowing you are all experiencing this together. However, if you notice that it’s affecting them, find a space away from them if you need some time alone to grieve. * Stick to a routine. Children find great comfort in routine and structure. Try to stick to the routine they are used to as much as possible. From breakfast to bedtime, they will feel more in control of themselves, when they know what to expect. * Create a space, inside or outside your home, where your children can go if they want to talk to their loved one. You could have some pictures there, and an item that reminds them of the person eg. a toy, or a pack of cards. * Help them to make a scrap book or a memory box for their loved one. Print out pictures and give them stickers to personalise it. * Allow them to wear an item of their loved ones clothing. A pair of socks, or a T-shirt, may help them feel closer to them. A memory teddy bear would also be amazing. * If your child is little, buy him or her a bottle of bubbles. Allow them to blow bubbles into the sky to let their loved ones know that they are thinking of them. * Keep a close eye on your child’s behaviour. Are they more anxious? Are they clock-watching? Are they biting their nails? Are they clingy or agitated? Are they having difficulty sleeping? Are they constantly worried about where you are and if you are OK? Are they concentrating at school? If you notice any changes, please speak to a professional so you can put further steps in place to assist them. * Take care of Yourself. You may find yourself plunging into work or battling to keep your life together. Grief is complicated. It’s life-altering and each one of us deals with it so differently. If you need to see a counsellor, please do so. The more emotionally healthy you are, the safer your children will feel.

As parents, we can’t protect our children from the pain of loss, but we can help them get through it. By encouraging them to express their feelings in a healthy way, we can help them develop valuable coping skills, which will be beneficial to them both now and in the future. The bigger a company, the more risks it faces in pursuit of its objectives. But budgeting for these risks can be prohibitive unless the business can properly assess and understand its risks, predict what they are likely to cost in the future, and set aside significant capital to address them. What happens when a company can’t find insurance to cover a specific need or if your excess is so high that you would need to take out a loan just to cover it. Do you then expose yourself to risk or do you take on that risk yourself and how?

“I’m lovin’ it”—I’m sure you can sing this jingle and recognize the brand behind it. The same goes with other tunes and music related to other brands, news programs, movies, sports programs or commercials. All remarkable and famous sounds are usually the result of sound marketing strategies, which consist in creating unique audios for advertising campaigns or media programs to let people recognize a product or service just using the auditory system.

Sound marketing, also called audio branding, enables companies to create memorable identities and improve brand recognition by targeting a sense in addition to vision or sight. Hearing and memorizing a sound is, in fact, highly effective in marketing campaigns since people tend to use all five senses to determine behavior or categorize experiences. Kevin Britz and Craig Page-Lee, hosts of our weekly Marketing & Leadership show, delve into the world of Sound Marketing and how it has to be part of your marketing strategy in the current marketing environment and how podcasting gives your brand its own unique sound, voice and insights to your markets. Companies are moving away from the traditional methods of recruitment and LinkedIn, a professional social network platform used by both talent acquisition specialists and job candidates. LinkedIn is the biggest platform to find talent as it allows for networking, training, interviewing tips and how best to prepare and present your profile. The SME sector, specifically those businesses that have a turn-over of between 10 and 50 million, employ the highest number of people and are certainly the backbone of our struggling economy right now. What or how do we assist this segment of the market? What are the issues that they are currently facing – other than the ongoing issues of electricity supply. How do they move forward and reignite their growth strategies.

We connected with South African Growth Strategist, Diane Boorman and asked her these questions and what is available for this market segment and how she can assist and get them back on track for sales, growth and expansion. Diane Boorman is an entrepreneur, has started, grown, expanded and sold many businesses. She now works with the SME (not start-ups) sector where their current turnovers is more that R10 million annually.

SMEs are the lifeblood of South Africa’s economy — and also the most at risk. SMEs across South Africa represent more than 98 percent of businesses, employ between 50 and 60 percent of the country’s workforce across all sectors, and are responsible for a quarter of job growth in the private sector. And while the GDP contributions from South Africa’s SMEs lag other regions — 39 percent compared to 57 percent in the EU—there is no doubt that this sector is a critical engine of the economy SMEs in South Africa face distinct challenges: * Limited access to low- and medium-cost funding is constraining business growth * Even when funding is available, low awareness of opportunities and a lack of financial knowledge remain major barriers to SMEs accessing the required support * Slowing demand has led to SMEs having to limit expansion plans and identify alternative channels to sell products * Accessing the right markets in order to sell products * Owners and founders struggle to empower staff to lead and drive the business * Liquidity and cash flow management are limited

To scale efficiently and effectively, expansion-stage companies need to focus their efforts on a specific subset of customers who are most similar to their best current customers, not a broad universe of potential customers. Customer segmentation is the way.

Kevin Britz & Craig Page-Lee, hosts of Lunchtime Marketing & Leadership on www.ebizradio.com delve into what customer segmentation is and why it matters?

Also known as market segmentation, customer segmentation is the division of potential customers in a given market into discrete groups. That division is based on customers having similar: Needs (i.e., so a single whole product can satisfy them) and Buying characteristics (i.e., responses to messaging, marketing channels, and sales channels, that a single go-to-market approach can be used to sell to them competitively and economically)

Perfection is the enemy of progress. A big challenge for many, so how do we find our lane and do the best we can in that lane? Work-Life balance is not spending hours on social media telling the world how hard you work - no one cares. You need to care about yourself, do what you need to do, do it well and switch off from work. Today, many organisations are seeking to make themselves future-fit.

The term ‘future-fit’ must be placed in context. It is most relevant at times such as these, when the whole world is moving from one paradigm to another – in this case, what is sometimes caused a change from the third Industrial Revolution to the fourth. Kevin Britz delves into Future Fitness with Chris Verrijdt, Future Factor and cuts through the layers of this future fit business training.

Companies are increasingly under pressure to take a stand on social, political and moral issues. Corporate Political Responsibility (CPR) refers to the expectation that companies speak out and take action on political matters. Employees are the largest segment calling out for this. According to a Financial Times Moral Money survey of readers, 70% of employees, 46% of consumers and 33% of investors are exerting pressure on companies to get involved. The most recent example is the rush by multinationals to exit Russia. Disney’s stance on the “Don’t say gay” legislation is another.

Why is it important? Companies risk a backlash if they are not vocal on important societal matters. But it can go either way on polarising issues such as abortion in the US, even threatening the stability of a business. “Unless corporations become more transparent and accountable, and therefore more sustainable in the way in which they exercise their political power, their licence to operate may be at risk,” says the Good Lobby, an organisation that encourages activists to participate in influencing decision-making processes. This is not something that companies can afford to ignore. The Eurasia Group says that it ranks “corporates losing the culture wars” among its top 10 risks for 2022.

What can businesses do about it? Businesses now need to not just articulate but also take action on the issues they choose to support. The decision on which issues to take a stand on is a difficult one. IBM uses five questions to help guide it: is the issue directly linked to the business? Does the company have a history of engaging in it? What are the stakeholders (employees, clients and shareholders) saying? What are competitors doing? Could the company make a meaningful difference by engaging? Signing petitions, issuing press releases, divestment, making charitable donations and engaging customers and employees on advocacy campaigns are examples of how companies can lend their support. Monies can also be spent on lobbying and funding politicians although this should be carefully considered. Some companies have opted to steer clear of this option.

Are you thinking about moving or perhaps upgrading your current home, the question you need to answer is: should I build, buy or renovate?

The pandemic changed a lot about our lives. With the flexibility around the working environment these days, many people are looking at either moving or upgrading their spaces. So it’s an appropriate time to look into the various options: whether to build, buy or renovate.

If you’re going to buy, what factors do you need to take into consideration? If you want to expand your current space, how do you finance a renovation and what about the danger of over-capitalisation? If you are renovating to sell, what should you be spending your money on? Or should you simply take the plunge and build your perfect home from scratch? What are the pros and cons?

Maya Fisher-French, financial journalist and author (@mayaonmoney) speaks to Andrea Tucker, a director at home loan originator MortgageMe, who digs into the nitty gritty of what to consider when answering the question: should we build, buy or renovate?

In this powerful new book, future strategist John Sanei shares how he found ways to cope with the uncertainty that has been all around us in the past two years. Leading international employer branding agency, Universum Global, has released its 2022 report on the South African talent landscape, the Universum Talent Survey. The survey collects global data on employment trends, preferred employers and evolving talent needs in the current economic climate. The results reveal several emerging trends in the global talent landscape, summarised in this article.

“One of the biggest trends to look out for globally is the overarching evolution of employees’ need to belong,” says Pabi Mogosetsi, Country Manager for Universum Global South Africa. She continues, “Transformation is one of the HR areas that is widely viewed as urgent to address.

“With the revised equity and transformation legislation coming into effect this year, the issue is under the spotlight. Our data has shown that diversity, equity, inclusion, culture and values have become quite important to our talent population. These became more widely recognised over the past two years during the pandemic and have become important differentiators to talent, as have learning and growth opportunities.

“According to the Manpower Group, economic activity is reverting to pre-pandemic levels. Data reveals that we will have many more employers expecting to hire talent in Q3 and Q4. But the ‘Brain Drain’ and skills shortage dilemmas remain a challenge. Manpower’s data also indicates that it is becoming exceedingly difficult to fill open positions with suitable talent.”

How talent needs are evolving in 2022 - Mogosetsi continues, “Ethical standards and professional training and development are still highly regarded by both students and professionals, while secure employment is important for professionals, leadership opportunities have become important to students.

“This demonstrates that talent is largely more focused on job characteristics, so employer brands need to ensure that their EVP (Employer Value Proposition) and employer brand image is correctly communicated in job descriptions. This helps them ensure that candidates’ experiences align with what is promised.

“Success, presence and culture are the three key words that stand out in the 2021 Universum Talent Survey, which includes data gathered from South African students on the most considered and attractive employers. 56 967 students from 27 universities participated in the survey as well as 27 391 professionals from over 56 professional areas. The full number of respondents has increased from last year and currently stands at 84 358.

“We have learned that the most used communication channels through which students learn about employers are social media, news media and online job boards, closely followed by employers’ career websites.

“As we start getting into the post pandemic economic stage, we have also observed that remote work is favoured for both target groups.”

Business/Commerce - Mogosetsi adds, “In business and commerce, students reported increased interest in employers that support future education, linking it to secure employment. The most interesting talent preference is that innovation has lost ground in terms of interest to students. Challenging work has also lost ground in the fight for stability. Professionals have placed a lot of importance on secure employment and leadership opportunities, with decreased focus on challenging work and responsibilities.”

Key Findings - The banking and Fintech sectors proved to have strong areas of growth within the talent population.

There has not been much movement in the highly competitive auditing and accounting, banking and e-commerce organisations for business talent. In the fintech sectors, interest has grown. * Investec and Deloitte hold pole position within the top five finance and accounting organisations, and KPMG has risen to be a top contender for talent in the aspirational accountancy-focused target group. * The South African Reserve Bank, First National Bank (FNB) and Standard Bank took the top spots in the fight for the aspirational banking-focused target group. * Investec, the South African Reserve Bank and South African Revenue Services (SARS) take the lead in attractiveness for the aspirational finance-focused target group of students. * Nike, Google and Coca-Cola came out tops in the Marketing-focused target group of students.

Engineering/Technology - Student Target Group Culture conversation – pre-COVID stages

Says Mogosetsi, “Student trends show us that their attributes are reverting to pre-COVID stages with the various projects that clients have decided to follow. Tech talent or ‘STEM’ talent still remains important and keeps rising to the pre-COVID stages.

“We have noticed that this industry and the tech, finance, banking and auditing Industries have grown in interest and have noted various organisations following suit in making sure they get a ‘piece of the pie’ by opening various technology hubs in South Africa, setting it up to become a focus point for African tech.

“While these industries are enjoying substantial growth in interest, the FMCG Industry is bleeding talent interest and growth is extremely limited. With the Top 10 companies in the FMCG industries losing rank to banking, and in particular, the international banks.

The preferred industries within this target group have evolved to include a fast growth in the energy, IT, computer and network security, computer software and technology and IT engineering consulting.

We have noticed tremendous growth in interest towards this target group with many companies setting up their hubs in South Africa to contribute to building on their skillset. * In the top spots for attractiveness within the engineering category are Sasol, Transnet and Eskom, which has not changed since last year. * The construction group is led by WBHO & Transnet in attractiveness. * Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Huawei, Samsung and Tesla take the lead in attractiveness with the IT focused target group.

Professionals - There is a sentiment of trends getting back to pre-COVID stages with slight changes of interest

What do professional hires think about organisations? Mogosetsi notes, “A particular area of interest is that more professionals are not as trusting in their organisations’ leadership as they may have been previously. 6,2/10 of the respondents would recommend their current places of work to someone else, which is concerning considering that a satisfaction rating of 8/10 should be achieved.

How does employer branding impact company culture for professionals? “Company culture influences retention and stimulates belonging, bringing DEI and wellness into the front line of importance to professionals. Professionals trust their own circles first when looking for information on other employers.

“They rely on professional networks, people in the industry and online reviews to make their choices on employer information. Secure employment has increased significantly as one of the attributes the talent population sees as an important factor to have. This population is interested in furthering their skills to give back to the organisations. They want to have professional development and training opportunities to plough back into the organisation.”

How have the preferences changed in the Business/Commerce professionals target group? “In the past year, we noticed that ethical standards are still an important attribute to the Business/Commerce professionals, while benefits and embracing new technologies have come up significantly as important too. A large decrease in high levels of responsibility and challenging work have come up as the least important attributes for this talent group.”

Who is the most attractive employer within this target group? The South African Reserve Bank still holds the top position, followed by SARS and then Transnet. And many employer brands fought up the ranks this year, with the new entrant Takealot.com landing in the top 50. * Google, Nike and Unilever are still in pole position for the Marketing occupation group while, Coca-cola South Africa, AB InBev and Google dominate the Sales occupation group. * Within the Consulting occupation group, Investec is leading the pack followed by Deloitte and Discovery as the most attractive employer brands in this category. * The Banking category sees the SA Reserve Bank leading the pack, followed by Investec and then SARS. This includes the Finance category where the SA Reserve Bank still leads, followed by National Treasury and then Investec. * Within Accountancy, SARS, Investec and SA Reserve Bank take over top positions, closely followed by PWC and Deloitte.”

What are professionals in the Engineering/Technology target group preferences? “Employer reputation and image, job characteristics and people & culture are important to this group. They are interested in innovation and embracing new technologies, and most of all professional training and development.

“For the whole target population, encouraging work life balance, flexible conditions and competitive base salary have risen in importance. “Challenging work is seen as one of the least important attributes, as are leadership opportunities. We believe this is linked to the importance of work-life balance and flexibility.”

Who is the most attractive employer within this target group? Sasol, Transnet and Google, remain the most attractive employer brands within the Engineering/Technology group. While a lot of significant movement has been noticed by the local municipalities as well. * The top 3 positions within the manufacturing occupation group sees Sasol, Unilever and the BMW Group coming out as the most attractive employers in this category. * In the Construction occupation group, WBHO and City of Johannesburg hold pole position, closely followed by Murray & Roberts. * Microsoft, Google and Amazon lead the IT occupation group pack, closely followed by FNB and Discovery.”

Mogosetsi concludes, “This year, we have new entrants all round and we congratulate them all for making it to the Universum South Africa Most Attractive Employers 2022. We look forward to seeing how your employer brands will grow and evolve through this journey.”

The top five most attractive occupations in South Africa are as follows for the main fields of study and occupation: * Business/Commerce * Professional * Students * Engineering Tech * Professional

Creativity has always been at the heart of business, but until now it hasn’t been at the top of the leadership agenda. By definition the ability to create something novel and appropriate, creativity is essential to the entrepreneurship that gets new businesses started and that sustains the best companies after they have reached global scale. But perhaps because creativity was considered unmanageable—too elusive and intangible to pin down—or because concentrating on it produced a less immediate payoff than improving execution, it hasn’t been the focus of most leaders attention.

How and why creative, digital, advertising, video and content agencies need to stop working with Fossil Fuel brands and be the catalysts in the market place by turning away from working with them. If we don't do something immediately, you, my and our children's futures will be catastrophic. Clean Creatives SA, inspired by Clean Creatives in the US, is bringing together leading SA media agencies, their employees, and industry clients, to address the SA ad and PR industry’s work with the fossil fuels that are the principal cause of climate breakdown.

This week Kevin Britz and Craig Page-Lee are joined by Stephen Horn, Director at Bouncing Biscuits Studio, a Cape Town based agency whose key focus is on social issues and news media content, and today they will be discussing Fossil Fuels and the impact of this on our children’s futures. * Its every Advertising Agency, PR firm and Creative Digital Agencies duty and responsibility to position the dangers and effects of fossil fuels and be part of the global move to save our planet and work with clients that are actively reducing their emissions into the world. * Fossil fuels are coal, gas and oil. Burning and using fossil fuels is the biggest source of excess carbon in our atmosphere. Excess carbon is like a blanket, bringing global heating that threatens South Africa with a likely 6C–8C average temperature increase by 2100. * This temperature increase will compound water stress and threatens our food security. It brings sea-level rise, ocean acidification, increases in drought and wildfires: harming everyone, but harming vulnerable and poor people the most. * Continuing to work for fossil fuel companies hurts our communities. It also poses risks to brands that sincerely prioritise sustainability, and to their agencies. * The Clean Creatives pledge is the best way to show you are committed to a future for the creative industry that doesn’t include promoting climate-breaking carbon pollution. * As creatives or leaders of agencies, the pledge says that you will decline future contracts with the fossil fuel industry: any company that derives more than 20% of its income from selling fossil fuels, or selling to fossil fuel companies. * As clients, it says you will decline work with agencies that retain fossil fuel industry clients.

Fires, floods, ageing fracture, stolen cables, constant power outages, to mention just a few risks that we in South Africa have to deal with on almost a daily basis. Risk management is key in any business, but how prepared are South African businesses?

At the heart of all insurance is risk: how much an insurer is willing to accept, and what premium it will charge for that risk. But assessing risk, especially for customers with smaller sums insured, can come at an expensive cost and so many insurers simply dispense with it – in effect, they take a “chance” on the risk. Surely there must be a better way … Ingrid von Stein connects with Marcel Wood, Head of Risk Assessment, Hollard Insure and innovator behind RiskMen and find out how risk assessments are done, why having a strong relationship with your broker is key to the ongoing assessment of your business.

We have again just witnessed a massive natural disaster in South Africa, particularly in the KwaZulu-Natal area, as floods disseminated communities, businesses, countless homes and hundreds of people are left homeless. How are insurers, particularly Hollard Insure, future proofing their business whilst remaining engaged and connected to their clients and brokers?

Ingrid von Stein, host of Biz Insight on www.ebizradio.com connects with Andries Wiese, Business Development Head, Hollard Insure and together they unpack what and how Hollard is

Some key areas discussed: * The KwaZulu-Natal floods have devastated many communities and indeed disrupted business's ability to do business. How has Hollard stepped in to support communities and clients in this area? And how is this part of Hollard's greater vision to create better futures for all? * In what other ways has Hollard stepped up to help its clients and communities to get back up after COVID-19, the riots and other disruptions? * Business insurance used to be a grudge purchase. Is that changing these disruptive times? How have these disruptions helped to change the relationship between business and insurers? Or rather, how should businesses view insurance in these disruptive times? * Disruption seems to be the new norm. First the pandemic, then the riots last year and now the floods. And no doubt, with ailing infrastructure and climate change, more disruptions lie ahead. How prepared is a big insurer like Hollard to meet their clients’ changing needs in the future? * With so many uncertainties and changes, how valuable is the role of the broker in not only supporting their clients but perhaps also going into battle on their behalf? * Any tips on how clients can get more value from their relationship with their broker? * Any last words of reassurance you want to say to your clients in KZN as they go through this difficult time?
