Two life-long friends, Craig Owens and Greg Heeres, are passionate about leadership and helping people achieve their business goals.
If you’re leading a team, then Craig and Greg feel pretty confident in assuming that you’ve got them all working, thinking, and behaving exactly like you do, right? Of course not! The differences in personality and thought within your team are what makes it special. However, the guys have noticed that some leaders fall into the trap of assuming everyone should be of the same mind when it comes to making a decision. In today’s episode they’ll discuss why you should embrace the “no men” on your team, and why their input is vital for the overall health of your organization.

While it might feel more comfortable to simply hide these away and hope nobody notices, the guys would like to encourage you to be vulnerable. Drag your blind spots into the light, address them, and watch how your leadership improves as a result.

Watermelon is a great summer treat. However, sometimes a nice green exterior can hide rotten fruit on the inside. When this happens we don’t say, “Well at least the outside was nice,” we throw the whole thing out! We can fall into a similar trap in our leadership, focusing on creating a great exterior while we let our vital interior development rot away. In this episode Craig and Greg encourage you to focus first on your internal development, and through that your external image will improve as well.

There seems to be a belief among some leaders that the louder they yell, the better they’re understood. No need to call anyone out, but we’re sure someone just came to mind. When you received that kind of coaching, did you receive it well? Of course not! Coaching should be focused on correcting and improving for the next time, not berating for things in the past. So tune in, and learn more about how you can coach up.

When was the last time you noticed your team? Not just on a surface level like saying hello in the hallway, but really truly paying attention to what's going on with your team. Noticing is easy to do, but it does require you to spend time doing it. It's impossible to see what your team is doing locked inside your office, so get out there and notice!

Performance reviews are a great tool to help leaders measure and celebrate the growth of their team, but the standard model of quarterly and yearly reviews is a terrible way to go about it. In this episode, Craig and Greg suggest a different approach to reviews that relies on frequent coaching and giving your team "the answers to the test" to set them up to succeed.

Recently Greg got a call from an educational institute asking him for advice on how to help their athletes “toughen up.” Unfortunately, they’re not alone, it seems like resilience is in increasingly shorter supply across the board these days. As a leader, it is your job to help instill grit into your team. Not tearing them down, but showing them that you view them with more potential.

Craig is not a very good golfer, so when they hit the course together Greg is generous enough to give him a mulligan...sometimes a lot of them. In the same way, we as leaders need to be willing to give our team members chances to learn from and improve upon their mistakes. As leaders, it’s our responsibility to help our organization grow. As Craig and Greg discuss in this episode, one of the best ways to do that is by focusing on your own personal development. It might seem counterintuitive, but by focusing inward we make ourselves more flexible, robust, and prepared leaders. This in turn enables us to better influence and encourage others in our leadership roles.

It seems like some people are so averse to change that they begin to regard it as a four-letter word. That couldn’t be further from the truth! Change is an essential part of any organization, and healthy change will help catalyze amazing gains!
Recently, quiet quitting has become a mainstream topic of discussion. While some of this can be attributed to the individual employees, Craig and Greg are here to tell you that a lot of the responsibility for this phenomenon lies at the feet of leaders. However, just as poor leaders can cause quiet quitting, powerful leaders can catalyze their teammates to be incredibly motivated contributors to the organization.
Effective leaders set goals for their organization. Maybe it's a quarterly sales goal, a yearly roadmap, or even a five year vision. However, have you thought about what the plan is when leadership changes?
Far too many businesses have no plan for a leadership change, and suffer as a result when the transition inevitably comes. It's never too early to begin planning for the eventual next stage of an organization to ensure it continues to thrive for generations to come.
Leadership is not an exact science. There’s no one size fits all solutions, or scores you can use to compare to yourself to other leaders. So what can you do as a leader to get insight into how effective your leadership is?
For this, Craig and Greg love assessments. They’re not tests you can pass or fail, but instead powerful tools to provide objective insight into the effectiveness of your leadership, and highlight areas you may need to improve.
