Carl is Chief Executive of the City Learning Trust; a 3 to 19 MAT in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire and Chair of the Foundation for Education Development. He has regional, national and international experience in leadership development and school to school improvement and has supported national and international projects and conferences for a range of organisations.
In a career that spans 26 years in teaching, 18 of them in senior leadership, Carl has worked in a range of schools and organisations across a number of settings. Further to this, Carl was ASCL President in 2017-2018 and between 2009 and 2011, formed part of the Prime Minister’s Talent & Enterprise Taskforce and has advised the Number 10 policy unit on several aspects of education.
Carl is Chair of the Careers and Enterprise Company’s Education Advisory Board and has previously been Chair for the Schools Cooperative Society and the Chartered College of Teaching’s trustee selection committee. He is a serving council member of the International Confederation of Principals, a member of the Global Education Leaders Partnership.
In addition, Carl has been a member of the Education Funding Agency advisory board; DfE School and Academy Funding Group; Confederation of School Trust board and the European School Headteachers Association. Most recently in 2020, Carl was recognised for his impact in education and named as a Fellow of the Chartered College of Teaching and as a Fellow of the Leadership Council at the Center for Universal Education, Brookings Institute, Washington DC.

Aidan studied art and primary teaching at what was then St. Martin’s College in Lancaster, specialising in teaching in Key Stage 1. Teaching since 2006, Aidan has worked in a range of schools across the Bradford area, teaching in all year groups in Key Stage 2. In 2014 he became Assistant Vice Principal at what was to become Dixons Manningham Primary, teaching in year 6 and working as part of the leadership team presiding over its move from being in special measures to being rated by Ofsted as ‘Good’. Aidan then spent a year as Primary Lead Practitioner for the Dixons Academy Trust, working alongside all the primary schools in the group. He became Primary Deputy Head at Dixons Allerton Academy in 2018 where he leads the Upper Key Stage 2 phase and has a responsibility for teaching and learning and curriculum development. During his career in teaching, Aidan has led on a variety of curriculum areas: art, reading, IT and maths. He has also led work on development of the wider curriculum, helping schools to develop a broad and balanced offer to their pupils. His personal interest in history and geography and music mean that his work on curriculum is a labour of love. Enjoy the episode!
