From Ron Cates: Over the last few years, I’ve gotten to know Tim very well. He is gifted, dedicated, and motivated. But he is not a highly experienced cyclist, and he has not trained and raced at the highest levels for years. In fact, he was a recreational cyclist who rode his bike a few miles occasionally. So, how does one go from nearly zero miles to a 3,000+ mile bike ride across America? And the bonus question: How does one safely and properly prepare in only nine months?
When I decided to do a cross-country bike ride six months ago to raise awareness of, and money for, child abuse prevention, I had a vague idea of the amount of planning and work that was needed. With just under two weeks to go, I still have a few things to finish up, but here’s what’s been done thus far.
Regardless of a person’s communication skills, child abuse is still a difficult subject to discuss. So, here’s my guideline for talking to victims of child abuse. Please note that this is solely based on my opinion and my experiences. Others may agree in whole, agree in part, disagree in part, or completely disagree.
As such, we’ve emphasized performance in the design of our shoes, but it has to be balanced with comfort and weight. Even if we get the performance, comfort, and weight right, the shoes have to look good or no one, but the most die-hard athlete, will buy them. In our opinion, we’ve nailed the style, so our shoes provide the whole package.
From Tim:
I have come to know that I am a smart, lovable, valuable and a worthwhile person. I also know that I can do a lot of things extremely well and I have accomplished a great deal of inspiring accomplishments and worthy successes in my life. Even so, until a few years ago, I had no intentions of sharing my story.
Starting September 29, 2021, I’ll be riding my bicycle from San Diego CA to Jacksonville FL. The ride is over 3,000 miles long and will take 40 days to complete (that’s about 75 miles per day, which, at 14 mph, is 5 hours and 20 minutes of riding per day). So, why do it?
My defense to the superhuman perfectionism was to do nothing, quit, put no effort into it, and/or have no emotional investment in the outcome. It was hard not to have an emotional investing in the outcome of things for me, so most of the time I did nothing or quit. Yet, in many areas of my life, I didn’t quit. I wish I knew why, I just didn’t.
The actual definition of “science” is the pursuit of knowledge. Knowledge about the world we live in (e.g., the physical sciences); knowledge about living things (e.g., life sciences); and knowledge about species interaction (e.g., social sciences). Some things humanity knows very well, other things humanity knows very little about, and still other things humanity’s knowledge is somewhere in between.
In the United States, there are over 330 million people: 78% of them are adults and 22% of them are children. That means the U.S. is home to 257.4 million adults and 72.6 million children. At an abuse rate of 20%, there are 51.5 million adults who were sexually abused as children and 14.5 million children will be sexually abused before they reach their 18th birthday; which equates to about 800,000 children being sexually abused per year.
About 20 minutes into the meeting, my vision started to blur, my hands began to feel numb, and my head began pounding. I’ve had some migraine headaches in the past and assumed that’s what this was. But it was different. It affected my memory. I couldn’t remember topics and fumbled with answers in the meeting. My colleague stepped up and covered for me.
At Athalonz, our mission is to help make the world a little bit better place. We do this by making athletic footwear that helps people enjoy athletics a bit more and by our humanitarian efforts. To expand our humanitarian efforts, we’ve created a non-profit organization called Interwoven Circles Foundation, which is the verbal description of Athalonz logo of three interwoven circles that represents connectivity of mind, body, and spirit.
Not surprisingly, the curriculum of life sciences is substantially different than the curriculum of physical sciences and there is very little overlap. As such, a typical life scientist knows little about the physical sciences and a typical physical scientist knows little about the life sciences.
From Tim: As part of my recovery from being sexually abused as a child, I participated in several group therapy sessions. Most of the group sessions were me and a bunch of women. I realized that I had the same emotions as these women and struggled with them in vary similar ways. This was news to me.
When a company claims to have patented technology, they are doing so to let the world know that they have a technological advantage that no one else has and that no one else can without infringing its patents. Yet, when a company makes such a claim, how do you know if they really have patents that provides some technological benefit?
Tim: As a child being sexually and physically abused, I developed survival skills. I became adept at disassociation, internalizing, disappearing, isolating, and taking it if all else failed. These survival skills were my defenses. They allowed me to stay alive and, more importantly, they protected something within me that wanted to be a good person, that wanted to be a good father, and that wanted to be someone that mattered.
On the doughnut day, I held a meeting in the morning with my client to review a new product they were developing to identify patentable ideas. The meeting went very well and we finished an hour earlier than anticipated. As was custom for longer meetings, my admin ordered doughnuts and coffee for the meeting.
If the shoe does not provide an equal and opposite force to the horizontal force component, your foot moves within the shoe. When your foot moves, it promotes sway and wastes energy. It also adds moving parts to your swing, creating more things that can breakdown and increase the risk of more missed shots.
There are three key aspects to a golf shoe that affect athletic performance. (1) How the shoe interfaces with the ground; (2) How the forces traverse within the shoe between the ground and the foot; and (3) How the foot interfaces with the shoe. In this blog, we’ll discuss the second key aspect: How the forces transfer between the outsole and the foot.

Tim: It’s only in the last few years where I’ve overcome my fears and started speaking out. Silence is what abusers want and they often get it with fear and shame. Abusers have a talent for making the abuse seem to be the fault of the abused.
The dream kept a spark alive in me. Baseball was my salvation; it gave me a place to escape the rest of my life. While I lived in constant fear, on the baseball field and in my baseball dream, I was not alone, I was not worthless; I mattered and people cared about me.
When it comes to athletic movement, it is done by athletes, who are living things. So, athletic movement is primarily studied by life scientists. Life scientists apply a kinematic approach to the study of athletic movement, which the study of a body in motion without regard as to how the body was put into motion or how the motion is stopped.
To begin, distance is a function of ball speed, launch angle, and spin rate. For this discussion, let’s focus on ball speed and assume launch angle and spin rate remain constant. So, how do we increase ball speed without compromising control?
From Tim:
Now that I’m a grandfather with many years under my belt, I like to think about big picture types of things. For instance, what type of future do I want for my granddaughter, her children, and beyond? What kind of opportunities do I want for my granddaughter, her children, and beyond?
Why are there so few creative thinkers? I have been pondering this question for years. Here’s Tim's thinking about thinking.
Anything humans have created includes technology. As such, there’s technology in everything from rags to dish soap to paint to medicine to cell phones to computers to cars to spaceships and on and on.
So, being fired sucks, then not so much. It opened a door that I didn’t even think was possible three weeks into law school. But for being fired, who knows where my patent law career would have gone.
When I graduated high school in 1979, I weighed 160 pounds. Five years later when I graduated from college, I weight 235 pounds. Two and half years later, when my second daughter was born, I weighed 150 pounds.
So, we’ve been wearing shoes for a long time. It is unclear, however, when shoes began including insoles. The first insoles were creating by innkeepers in response to their customers complaining of sore feet. The innkeepers created little mattresses filled with animal hair (Athalonz insoles are much better!).
My various work experiences helped shape the work environment I want to work in and strive to provide for the law firm and for Athalonz. I have four fundamental rules that I follow and expect all who work with me to follow as well.
As I mentioned in a few previous blogs, I injured my back when I was seventeen and kept reinjuring it to the point that it ended my dream of becoming a professional baseball player.
When I started Athalonz almost 10 years ago, I had no real experience with marketing and completely underestimated its importance. I assumed that if we made really good products, the rest would take care of itself. Boy, was I wrong!
