We are created to worship always, no matter our circumstances. Consider the words to “I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,” the words of David in Psalm 22, and the words of Jesus in Matthew 26. Worship Christ Who is the spotless lamb of God, Who willingly gave Himself in obedience even to the point of death on a cross to take the penalty for our sin. He is worthy. “By His wounds we are healed.”(Isaiah 53:5) Make a decision to praise Him this Christmas!

Then the LORD God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is. Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts. Perhaps the LORD God Almighty will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph.” (5:14-15)

David completes preparations for the building of the temple and sets leaders in charge over it. He then leads by example in giving and appoints his son Solomon as king. The whole community gives generously from the abundance that God provided to them.

After conquering a good portion of the Promised Land, a list is made of the kings who had been defeated and how the land was to be allotted to each tribe, with specific boundaries defined. Special requests were made from Caleb and his daughter, with Caleb receiving the specific land God had promised to him and driving out the descendants of Anak.
God fulfills His promise to the Israelites and clearly and obviously helps them to wipe out all the people groups that were in the land which God had promised to give to His chosen people.
The new generation of Israelites are circumcised, the miraculous fall of Jericho, the sin of Achan and it’s effect on the whole nation of Israel, and the destruction of Ai.
Joshua is established as the new leader of the Israelites, and his first act in this role demonstrates that God is clearly with them. The testimony of Rahab and the crossing of the Jordan surely helped the Israelites to be strong and courageous, knowing that God would be with them wherever they go!
Moses teaches the Israelites a song before they enter the Promised Land and before he dies. The blessing of God’s protection over His people is great.
Life and prosperity or death and destruction, Joshua is appointed to succeed Moses, Moses writes down the Law then predicts the Israelites rebellion and states that he will teach them a song to testify against them.
Punishment for worshiping other gods, courts, kings, offerings for priests and Levites, detestable practices, prophets, cities of refuge, going to war.
Extensive commands and explanation of how the Israelites were to love the Lord and be careful to not be enticed to worship other gods.
Moses continues his speech to the Israelites, admonishing them to remember the Lord and all He has done, to recognize why God has given them the land, and to fear the Lord.
The Ten Commandments, God speaks through the fire, commands to obey and pass along these commands to children, driving out the other nations little by little.

Joshua was appointed to succeed Moses.

The tabernacle holds so much significance; the Lamb, the incense, the beauty and holiness of God... from the beginning to the end in The Revelation, God provides a way for us to be cleansed of our sin so that we might have access to His holiness and that He might dwell with us!
Details of mixing incense that was to be kept holy for times of worship, Moses up on the mountain receives tablets written by the hand of God, the people sin and Aaron creates a golden calf which they worship and become a laughingstock, the Lord’s anger burns against the Israelites.
1) Throw off the sin that so easily entangles (Hebrews 12:1). 2) Consider the “great cloud of witnesses” and faithful work of others who are serving God. 3) Fix your eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2). 4) Embrace God’s discipline for your good (Hebrews 12:5-11). 5) Pursue the prize (1 Corinthians 9:24-27). 6) Know God is enough (2 Corinthians 12:9). 7) Recognize the difference between body and soul (2 Corinthians 4:16). 8) Check your perspective of time (2 Corinthians 4:17-18). 9) Put your hope in God and wait on Him (Luke 17:7-10).

Much detail about the priestly garments and the consecration of the priests and all items used in worship
Detailed instructions are provided for building the tabernacle and each item inside it. Clearly, God cares about the details and about beauty, and He expects us to give of the beautiful things He gives us to use in worship.
More laws are detailed for the Israelites, along with commands to celebrate festival, then the people are consecrated and the elders see God!
God speaks to the Israelites at Mount Sinai and the people tremble in fear. God gives them the Ten Commandments and begins to clarify specific laws and decrees, such as these laws regarding injuries and slaves.
After many miraculous events, God provides manna and quail for the Israelites, yet they continue to grumble and complain and fail to always follow God’s instructions. Moses realizes that he cannot lead the people by himself, but he needs others to support and help him. Sometimes wise relatives visiting from a distance can help us recognize our needs and evaluate how best to meet them.
God’s mighty power is displayed through the final plague on the Egyptians. Instructions for Passover are given and the Israelites leave Egypt.
Moses and Aaron go before Pharaoh and God sends the plagues on Egypt. Water to blood, frogs, gnats, livestock killed, boils, and hail... but still Pharaoh rejects God.
Exodus 4-6 Moses complains to God about his inability to speak, then Aaron is included as they go speak to the Israelites and to Pharaoh.
A new generation of Israelites becomes numerous. A new Pharaoh oppresses them, and they cry out to God, who raises up Moses to deliver them.
Israel gives his blessing before he dies, and Joseph also dies as we conclude the book of Genesis.
Jacob (Israel) moves from Canaan to Goshen with all he owns. The famine is severe and Pharaoh acquires all the land, except that of the priests.
Joseph interprets Pharoah’s dream and is restored to a position of prominence. Pharaoh’s dream comes true, and Joseph’s brothers come to Egypt for food.
Some adult situations arise as Tamar is mistreated, Joseph flees from Potiphar’s wife and her pursuits, and Joseph is forgotten after he interprets the dreams of the cupbearer and baker.
The family drama continues. Jacob and Esau separate and their descendants are listed. Jacob becomes Israel and his descendants are listed. Joseph has dreams which make his brothers angry, and they sell him as a slave.
Jacob returns to his brother Esau, wondering if he will be accepted. The men of Shechem wish to intermarry, but it doesn’t end well for them.
Rebekah helps Jacob steal his brother’s blessing, Jacob flees to Laban, receives God’s blessing, marries Leah and Rachel and has children.
Genesis 25-26 Esau sells his birthright for a cup of stew, Isaac and Rebekah act similarly to Abraham and Sarah, Isaac finds room for his people
Genesis 22-24 A beautiful passage that demonstrates God’s abundant provision and Abraham’s faithful obedience. Abraham is obedient to sacrifice Isaac, but God provides a ram instead. Abraham’s wife Sarah dies and Abraham seeks a wife for his only son Isaac. He trusts that God will provide and God does provide even before the prayer is spoken.
God dealt differently with Abraham and Lot and others in the Old Testament, and it can be difficult to understand the reason for some events that have been recorded for us in this passage.
Genesis 16-18 Abram becomes Abraham and Sarai becomes Sarah, Hagar conceives and Ishmael is born, none were found righteous in Sodom and Gomorrah. How good to know that God hears our cries and uses us in spite of our weaknesses.
Job 40-42 Today we finish the book of Job. We read God’s description of great creatures, probably what we know of as dinosaurs, and the repentance that comes when God speaks to Job and his friends. Job’s wealth is restored in double measure and we have a happy ending to Job’s story.
Job 38-39 Such a beautiful description of God’s power in creation! This is a favorite of mine. It humbles me to recognize the vast knowledge and understanding of God.
Job 35-37 Who can put a stop to everything and keep us all from accomplishing anything? God’s majesty and power are made known to us through weather. God alone controls the sun, moon, clouds, lightning, snow, rain, etc. and it is beyond our understanding.
Job 29-31 is very interesting, with clear and vivid distinctions between Job’s former life and current misery, three separate categories of potential sin, longing to be in God’s presence, and again declaring his innocence.
From the beginning, we have not seen justice on earth. Wrongdoers are not charged or punished. We seek wisdom and no person or animal on earth can find it, but God alone knows where it is. The fear of the Lord is wisdom. It cannot be bought or found except through the fear of the Lord.
Job 21-23 Does God always reward the righteous with prosperity? Does the level of our faith determine how easy our life will be? Do the wicked receive the punishment they deserve? In this passage, we find truth that coincides with John 16:33, Psalm 37:4, Matthew 5:45, and Philippians 4:7.
Our oldest son graduated from college in May and has recently moved away from close friends. When you find a friend who understands who you really are, you build a lifelong friendship that will last despite distance or time. In this episode we consider how we can help our kids learn to recognize the traits of a good friend and develop positive lifelong relationships.
