Do you feel stuck when it comes to deciding on the direction of your business? Maybe you have an idea of what you want your business to look like, but you haven’t really seen it done before and you’re not really sure if you can pull it off?

When I was introduced to the expansive teacher entrepreneur community online, I noticed that I had misconceptions about teacher businesses that were keeping me stuck. These are misconceptions that I see other teacher business owners struggling with and I think they keep many teacher business owners from moving forward in their business.

In this episode, I want to share four common misconceptions and help us reconceptualize these factors when it comes to teacher entrepreneurship. My hope is that at the end of this episode you feel equipped to not only start your teacher business but also empowered to take it to the next level.

Do you struggle with perfectionism? If so, you’re not alone. Perfectionism is common among many teachers and teacher entrepreneurs. However it is something to be aware of because left unmanaged, it can interfere with your success. In this podcast episode, I’m sharing with you three ways you can avoid perfectionism and take action where your time and attention matter most.

Here are the highlights of this episode:

These are things that you should be doing regardless of what stage your business is in.

  1. Set Deadlines - Deadlines can hold you accountable and keep you from overthinking.
  2. Set Small Goals - Small goals can keep you from being intimidated by your big goals. They can also give you momentum to tackle your next small goal.
  3. Create Boundaries Around How You Consume Inspiration - Inspiration can be helpful but it can also subconsciously feed perfectionism. Get clear on when you’ll stop consuming inspiration so that you can focus on taking action.

Action Steps:

  1. I want you to think about a goal you have for your business - one that intimidates you. And I want you to map out three small steps to get you there. Pick one of those steps and set a deadline towards that goal.
  2. When you meet that small goal - use that momentum to help you reach your next small goal.
  3. Then I want you to reach out to me and tell me about your small win so that I can celebrate that with you! It’s important to celebrate those wins - even if they feel small.

What does success look like for you in your business? What does growth mean for you? If you’re a teacher entrepreneur, it’s important to establish clear goals to direct your time and energy because without a specific objective it can be difficult to know where your time is best spent. In this podcast episode, I share three systems you need in your business to work smarter, not harder, so that you can scale your business strategically and sustainably.

Here are the highlights of this episode:

These are things that you should be doing regardless of what stage your business is in.

  1. Visibility System - How people learn about your business whether that's your store on Teachers Pay Teachers store, your course, or coaching services.
  2. Data Tracking System - How you track the ways people respond and engage with you through your sales and marketing efforts.
  3. Content Creation System - How to use those results to make strategic moves in your business that will be the best use of your time.

Action Steps:

  1. Choose one platform where you have visibility - besides yout store and website - that could be your blog/youtube channel/social media and take action by sharing about your business
  2. After a week - set a timer for ten minutes. Read your data and make notes about your observations. Did you get more views this week than last week? Why do you think that is? What time did you post? Did that affect your visibility? Who exactly engaged with you.
  3. Pick one observation that you noticed from your data to make a small tweak to the content that you create and publish next week.

Send me a DM and tell me what you noticed! I’d love to hear how your strategy is affecting your content.

So let me ask you?Are you aware of how much time you spend working within your business each week? Do you use time blocking? Time blocking is a time management strategy that I’ve used to help me prioritize and organize my time - especially for lesson planning, grading, and emails. Without careful planning, these tasks can absorb your time like a sponge. possibly consuming more time for those tasks than they might actually require. In this episode, I’m sharing how I used time blocking to structure my planning time so that I could keep my teacher tasks within the boundaries of my contract hours. I also give you the step by step method that you can implement time blocking as a classroom teacher.

Here are the highlights of this episode:

  • How to identify time blocks in your schedule
  • How to strategically plan tasks within time blocks
  • How to apply margin within your time blocks so you can plan for the unexpected.
  • Action steps for how you can implement time blocking along with a free resource to help get you started.

Part of my mission for this show is to empower teachers with strategies to take ownership of their time, their mindset and their lives. We talk about productivity and time management a lot because I believe that time is truly the most valuable currency we own.

Today I wanted to talk about a topic that affects our time in the long run and involves another kind of currency…. saving for retirement. You’ve probably heard me say it before, but I believe that self care is about making decisions that will benefit you not just in the immediate future, but also overtime.

Saving for retirement is not something you hear teachers talking about very much unless they’re getting close to retirement. That’s why I was so excited when I found Laura Martin and her content about investing.

Laura is passionate about encouraging teachers to explore their options when it comes to saving for retirement. Her instagram account, @theinvestedteacher, educates teachers with bite-sized and beautiful content about why it's important to plan for retirement, possible options to consider, and tools to equip your conversations with financial representatives.

That’s not all Laura does though...

Laura went to San Diego State University for undergraduate, master in education and credential program. She taught in the classroom for 5 years, teaching third grade, before taking a position as a math facilitator in her district office. Now, she coaches teachers on math instruction and plans professional learning for her district. She also supports the programs her district uses, such as iReady and ST Math. Next year she will be continuing in her role and work with sites to help make positive changes in math instruction through the CGI philosophy and other student-centered approaches to learning.

As we talk about saving for retirement we know that money management is a big part of that and that it is extremely personal so we’re not going to get into the weeds of it today. This podcast episode is not financial advice, we are not financial advisors, but our goal with our conversation is to help empower you and give you some of the wisdom and insight we have found useful and can potentially help you research your own options for saving for retirement.

Here are the highlights of this episode:

  • Laura talks about why it’s important to save for retirement
  • Options for retirement plans to consider
  • Questions to ask financial representatives
  • Tips for budgeting and saving
  • FREEBIE resource with questions to ask a financial representative
  • You can follow Laura and learn more about her content on Instagram @theinvestedteacher

Saving for retirement is something that most people don’t necessarily link to self care but I like to think about self care as decisions that you make that care for you now and in the future. If you’d like to check out more of my tips for how teachers can practice self care, check out my Teacher Self Care Planner. In this resource I share simple and practical strategies that you can care for your time, your mindset, and your energy.

You have beliefs about your time whether you know about them or not and you can identify them by observing the habits you currently have. Holding yourself accountable to new habits might require that you challenge the beliefs that you’ve been reinforcing through your old habits.

In this episode I discuss ways we can observe our habits and notice if they are reinforcing a belief. Because once we start paying attention to our actions, we can start deconstructing our beliefs and decide whether or not they support the identity and the life we want to live.

Here are the highlights of this episode:

  • Common feelings and beliefs that most teachers have
  • Actions that tend to reinforce the belief of not having enough time
  • I give 2 scenarios that demonstrate how a response to an “interruption” during lesson planning may reinforce a belief that is not serving you
  • How planned responses to interruptions can equip you to reinforce the beliefs that align with how you view yourself and your time.

  • FREEBIE resource to learn more about how to create boundaries, collaborate with colleagues, and budget your energy. - gracemariegriffith.com/selfcare

When it comes to our time management as teachers - we have to analyze how we are already spending our time if we want to find ways to change it. Knowing how much time it takes to do even the easiest tasks can affect how we see that task and choose to do that task in the future.

In this episode, I’m sharing my secret technique to building routines which is..…. Time tracking. In this episode I’m sharing my time tracking system that I’ve used for teaching and even in my business.

Burnout - this word gets tossed around a lot in schools and in groups of teachers. It’s something we feel when we’re not getting results for the amount of work and care that we’re putting into something.

It’s important to get specific with ourselves about what burnout actually means, what we’re feeling, what’s causing it and how we can avoid it. Because it’s a lot more common than you would think.

That’s why I want to share my experience with burnout today on the podcast. This is after I’ve taken some time to really examine my experience with it and reflect on some of the mindset traps that caused me to feel stuck.

In this episode I share three mistakes that I made that kept me stuck in burnout, how you can avoid them, and if you find yourself making them - how to find a way out.

The information on this podcast is solely for informational purposes and is not medical or counseling advice of any kind. If you have been experiencing stress and overwhelm, consider seeking out professional help. Many insurance plans that districts provide come with some kind of counseling coverage for teachers so I would highly encourage you to explore that route - maybe contact your HR representative and get some information so you can get the support you need.

Here are the highlights of this episode:

  • How comparing myself to other teachers made me feel like I had to do it all.

  • How I had to learn to budget my time and energy with intentional limits.

  • How I needed to ask questions to get clarity on what was most important.

Teachers make somewhere around 1,500 decisions every day. That’s about 4 decisions per minute!

Decision-making consumes quite a bit of energy because of how we spend time imagining the outcomes, the pressure to achieve the desired outcome, and imagining what would happen if we made the wrong decision.

Imagine going through that process 4 times every minute?

In this episode, we’re talking about the specific ways our decision making can affect our energy and our time management and I’ll share some systems that I’ve used to help me make decisions more efficiently so that I can avoid decision fatigue.

Here are the highlights of this episode:

  • What is decision fatigue and how do you avoid it? I share some ways that you can be pre-emptive about decision-making

  • Filter questions that you can use to help you clarify and simplify your tasks.

  • How using the “minimum viable product” method can help you simplify a task.

  • How to create “strategic shortcuts” so that you can eliminate unnecessary decision-making when you do encounter decision fatigue.

Have you ever questioned your skill or credibility when you have evidence of your accomplishments?

If you have, you might have dealt with imposter syndrome.

But let me let you in on a little secret…. Imposter syndrome isn’t always a bad thing.

In this podcast episode, we’ll dive into

  • what imposter syndrome is
  • how it’s triggered
  • how it affects us negatively
  • how to confront it
  • how to use it to your advantage.

At the end of this episode, you’ll have some strategies to confront it on your own, some encouragement that you’re not alone, and hopefully a new perspective on how to look at it!

One of the things that I talk about is excavating the evidence of our accomplishments in order to confront imposter syndrome. I created a cheat sheet freebie of these questions to help you reflect on some of your previous accomplishments that can lend themselves to evidence of your character, capacity and credibility. You can download that freebie here.

These are great questions to refer back to when you need to muster some confidence before starting something new.

Real talk: Teaching can feel SOOOO lonely.

The physical isolation of teaching from separate classrooms and scattered schedules (not to mention the covid 19 social distancing measures) means that there is little to no time for friendly small talk much less any other time to exchange ideas, give encouragement or vent about the frustrations.

This week on the podcast, I talked to my dear friend, Natalie Roefer, and she gave us some practical and creative tips for how to connect with other teachers- especially during pandemic times.

Natalie has taught in two different countries, several schools, and in several different positions, so she is very familiar with finding creative ways to meet new friends and connect with others.

At the end of this podcast, you’ll walk away with some practical strategies and ideas to reach out to other teachers on your campus and beyond.

Systems can be a game changer when it comes to efficiency and today on the podcast I’m sharing five systems that will shave off some of the time and energy that you may be used to putting into some of your weekly tasks.

After you listen to this episode, you’ll walk away with some practical strategies you can apply immediately.

Here are some of the highlights of this episode:

(2:12) System 1: Build a Feedback Bank - This a tool that you use to store frequently used comments for grading. When you’re grading, you can pull up this document and literally copy and paste them into your online platform.

(7:47) System 2: Create a Strategy Bank - This is a running list of strategies for your lesson elements that have been effective. To create this tool, Set a timer for 5 minutes and brainstorm all of the strategies that you have used over a period of time. Then when you’re lesson planning, refer to this document to easily retrieve those strategies.

(9:03) System 3: Create FAQ Email Folder - As you answer parents emails with frequently asked questions, save them in a folder so you can retrieve your carefully thought out wording and not reinvent the wheel next time you receive an email with that question.

(15:22) System 4: Track your Time - Keep a journal or a note about how much time you are spending on specific tasks. If you know where your time has gone, you can have more intention about where your time goes.

(18:36) System 5: Schedule Everything Out - Make a list of every single task that you do in a week. Put it on your calendar within a time boundary so that you can be realistic about your tasks. This will equip you to make decisions about your time and set boundaries around it in the future.

Do you find yourself lesson planning on the weekends?

Or grading stacks of assignments at night?

I’ve been there. And it got to a point, when I decided that I just couldn’t do it anymore.

In this podcast episode, I share with you the...

  • backstory about how I decided that I would only work contract hours,
  • the steps I took to strategize how to get there,
  • the schedule that I implemented to ensure that I knocked out all of my tasks,
  • and the result of that hard work.
