Welcome to Episode 32!
We're sorry.
It has been a crazy few months and we are figuring out how to do adult things (mostly just me, Tom has figured it out). Anyway, we hang out with George Sherry, overall cool guy and fellow Pre-Script youngin. We just hang out. Come join us.

Welcome to Episode 31! We are extremely sorry for the delay in uploads, we have both been extremely busy as of late. We will probably be busy for the next 2 weeks or so, but try to have some special episodes up in the meantime. Once I'm settled in Canada, things will hopefully go back to a semi normal. Anyway, today we just kick back and relax and do some catching up. We talk about what we've been up to for the past month and talk about some potential future Pre-Script meetups... stay tuned for that, Northern peeps.

Welcome to Episode 30! Today we catch up with Mahan Elmi, legendary figure and also Gandalf. It seems that every time we have him on we want to talk training mechanics and sound smart, but we always end up with a meta-conversation and a reflection on the governing principles of training and life. Tune in for a slightly ethereal but very stimulating conversation. Enjoy!
Welcome to Episode 29! Today we welcome back Bryce MacArthur to the podcast. Bryce is a veteran coach that was in my semester of PSL1 and he's also absurdly strong (N=1 and all that). We talk about his new job at Movati Athletic in the wild west of Canada and how he's enjoying it. We go over their staple assessments and talk about how Bryce improved some of them for the clientele he works with. Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 28! Today we welcome back Dan Casson to the show. Dan is an accomplished S&C and powerlifting coach from the UK, and currently trains one of our hosts, Tom Henderson, for his rugby playing. We talk about the importance of self-belief in lifting, and then go into the subtle nuances of how communication and self-belief differs based on the lifter's personality. Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 27! Today we sit down to talk about Tom's first official rugby game of the season and his shoulder injury that he had leading into it. In true youngster fashion, he took a bunch of painkillers and drank a lot of Redbull, then proceeded to win the game and get nominated for player of the game. We talk a bit about his shoulder injury and ask some contextual questions regarding his injury. We then talk a little bit about the idea of an objective health model and what qualities we think could be used to gauge overall health. (It should make more sense when you listen, but it also might not.) Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 26! Today we talk about movies, again. Shutter Island, Us, and for some reason, Spider-man: Into the Spiderverse. It's a great movie. Pull up if you disagree. We try to delve into some of the deeper meanings in the films and peel away the layers to distill the message down to the bare bones. At least, what we think is the message. We are not film critics, please don't judge us. Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 25! Today we welcome Nick Ridpath to the show. Nick is a Pre-Script OG and has been helping me ever since I got started in the industry with his insight and creativity. Today we have a chance to share his gifts with you, and we are extremely grateful. We talk about variability in new exercises in a program, especially as it pertains to new trainees. We discuss the phenomena of "Burn Boats" that is currently taking our coaching space by storm, and we finish with a discussion on assessments. Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 24! Today it's just the boys. Tom recalls his experiences with the first week of rugby training and what a blast it's been. He's been selected to be among the 50 most skilled players in all of the first year, so he is officially a cool kid. (We been knew that ever since he donned the bucket hat, but at least it's being properly recognized now.) Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 23! Today we welcome Patty B to the show, who is an absolute treat to talk to. It's our first time talking face to face alone outside of mutual classes so it was quite a fun experience, and we found a lot of things we agreed on. We talked about unique sports (paddleboard guy?), social media and our struggles with content creation, and celebrity boxing. Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 22! The boys return after a week-long hiatus (to a plethora of heartbroken listeners, we're sure) because Mr. Saloojee had violent food poisoning and Mr. Henderson was doing real adult things and moving into his university dorm. Nonetheless, we're back, and that's what matters. We both start classes within the next week or so so our schedules will get a little more busy, but we will definitely still try to keep consistent uploads. Today we just sit down and catch up and go over Tom's moving experience and possible coaching opportunities. Just some casual chilling. Join us!

Welcome to Episode 21! Today I welcome my old friend Connor Osmond to the show. We sit down mostly to catch up because it's been a while, but I wanted to ask him some questions about fitness in the Canadian Armed Forces. He has some cool insight about how things are structured and what lessons people can learn from the way they do things. Enjoy!

Welcome to episode 20! Today we welcome back Calvin Burgess to the show, resident bodybuilder and all-around unit. We talk about his experience training with Dr. Jordan Shallow & Killian Hamilton at Pure Muscle and Fitness in Toronto (Alexa, play Sweet Dreams are Made of This). Then we talk about the age-old discipline vs motivation conversation and how both of us see it, and how Calvin implements it with his clients. Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 19! Today we welcome Dr. Jeremy Dinkin, D.C. to the show. He is a chiropractor based in New Jersey with a fresh and invigorating take on the profession. His methods are a blend of palliative and remedial implements and resistance training so that he can generate genuinely lasting change in his clients. I myself have booked sessions with him and can personally attest to the success of his methods, but you don't need to take my word for it: you can just listen to this episode. Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 18! Today we welcome back Kyle Baxter, resident authority on lateral raises (and hip things as of late). Kyle tells us about something he's been passionate about lately: educating trainers on how gen pop and athletes are actually the same (governed by the same movement mechanics, muscles, etc.) and how they should be treated as such. We go into some of his thoughts surrounding pain and how to bring about change at the level of the nervous system. It's a short episode, but action-packed. Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 17! Today we welcome Jeff Anderson to the show, and it's long overdue. He has been around obviously since before I started coaching but he's been helping me since the beginning of my journey, and I'm extremely grateful for all of the help he has given. We talked about Covid and lockdowns in Toronto, responsibility, and his take on coaching and personal training as a career and where he thinks it will head. It was invigorating and his takes were new to me, but I loved them all and it was overall a great conversation. We didn't even get to talk about sport specificity, so stay tune for that... Enjoy!
Welcome to Episode 16! The boys are back for a lively discussion about movies. We go into our respective experience with a few horror movies as youngsters. We talk about the MCU and Marvel's superhero universe and Tom's connection with them. He shares a great story about his Spiderman phase as a child. It's a chill episode, and neither of us are movie experts, so don't get triggered by our lack of movie knowledge/sophistication. Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 15! Today's episode is a real banger. We welcome William Alli for his first appearance (and hopefully not the last). He is an S&C coach based in Indiana but originally from Ontario. We sit down to talk about a truly Multifarious range of topics: coaching, social media, training athletes, and a host of other things. I learned a ton and I hope you do as well. Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 15! Today Tom and I sit down to discuss his thoughts as he wrapped up the Pre-Script Level 1 course. It was a transformative experience for both of us with a very condensed learning period. We sat down to discuss some of the tangible benefits we experienced during it, and we talk a little bit about the reality of the subjective nature of coaching. It fits into the concept of "the veggies in the spaghetti sauce" (which will make more sense after you've listened. So do it. Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 13! Today we welcome Denzil Cruz to the show, a UK-based PT from the Philippines. We go over his background in powerlifting and how he got to his current jacked self. We also go over his experiences in martial arts and the psychological benefits it has brought him and how they contrast with the positive aspects of powerlifting. Denzil is someone we will definitely see more of (I need more people to riff off of with combat sports) and maybe an existentialism episode coming soon...?

Welcome to Episode 12! Today we welcome back Eric Bugera to the podcast for more angry science. We grill him about fundamentals about hypertrophy and the mechanisms that lead to getting jacked. This is the important stuff. We also go into some of the finer points and considerations when it comes to coaching, especially when cueing people. Then I trigger him with a question at the end, so everyone goes home happy. Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 11! Today we welcome Bryce MacArthur to the podcast. Bryce is an industry frontrunner who has been making big moves in the past few months. He was in the same classes as me when I took the first few coaching certifications (he had done ones previously, but he was in my classes when I started my journey of education in the fitness industry). We look at his upbringing and how he settled on coaching as a career and then go over some of the next big steps in his career. Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 10! Today we welcome back Mahan Elmi, our first repeat guest (obviously). Since his first episode on (the podcast's pilot) was more just us rambling, today we decided to try to do justice to him as a proper guest and listen to his story. We go through some of his upbringing and education and what eventually brought him to coaching, and he shares a great robotics story (wait until the end for that one). We then shift gears starkly into stoicism (oh boy). We discuss it as a form of guiding principles or system's way of thinking (6037th PS plug) as opposed to a system directly. We discuss some of its issues and the glaring issue with influencers or public figures employing it and advertising it and the subtle hypocrisy within (we think). It's a wild ride, but we had fun recording, so we hope you have fun listening. Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 9! Tom is back from his golfing trip in Scotland so we sit down and do a recap of some of the highlights of his trip. Then we get into using music/caffeine as stimuli for lifting intensity and "getting hyped". We share our protocols for song-choosing and how we select what songs for what kind of work we're doing. It's a little strange and specific, but we had a lot of fun recording. Him and I have both had a rough few days but I'm extremely grateful we got to catch up and still get a coherent episode. Hope you enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 8! Today I sit down with Dan Casson from Casson Strength & Fitness. Dan is a veteran powerlifting coach and competes at a high level himself. He also coaches various athletes in strength & conditioning for the sports that they play, including Tom Henderson, our co-host. We talk about Dan's background in lifting and how he got into coaching, and then we move into a discussion about strength sports and what programming for an athlete is like. We discuss Tom and his rugby playing as a case study. Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 7! Today we welcome Brant Creelman, an S&C coach out of Brock University. Brant has incredibly deep insight into the world of strength sports at the collegiate level and I am a stalwart believer in his approach of coaching kids: looking at sport as something important but temporary, and character and morals as something infinitely more important and long-lasting. His upbringing, he says, played a huge role in his current success and influences the way he interacts with his athletes, and we compare notes on our parents' discipline in raising us and how grateful we are for it. Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 6! Today we have Kyle Baxter on to inspire us with his dedication & discipline. His vision for a better future and desire to help more people led him to cross a literal ocean to pursue it, and if that isn't inspiring, I don't know what is. We go over his education and experience and how they led him to his current pursuits. We get his insight on what is wrong with the fitness industry and what he believes we should be doing to improve the space we operate in. We discuss some of the realities of coaching and having a coach and hear Kyle's unique opinions on the subject (no hate whatsoever to top sets or backdowns). Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 5! Today I sit down with Jad Naaman, my best friend since middle school. Jad and I started our fitness journey together in Movati Athletic Kanata (shouts out) and the rest is history. We go over his training history and how it has been impacted by lockdowns in Ontario (not cool). We talk about his future plans at uOttawa and his consideration for the med school route to go into sports medicine. He has a history of playing hockey as a goalie and is keen to take his talents and experience and try it out as a coach in the major leagues a few years down the line. We finish with our trademark complaints about the fitness industry, especially how they affect kids our age, but this time we also offer a solution and my thought process for reverse engineering the fit toks/reels into something that can help more people. Go, positivity.

Welcome to Episode 4! Today we have Calvin Burgess, who is by far the biggest guest we've had on (4 episodes so far) and will probably stay that way for a while. In this fairly straightforward episode, we discuss Calvin's training history and his history history (you know, life) and how it has impacted the way he trains now. We go over some of his current training methods and how his workouts are structured. We discuss how he applies all of the theories and concepts he has learned to his training model and more importantly, how it affects the way he trains clients. Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 3! We've got a longer episode for you today, but it's well worth it. Today Tom and I sit down with Thunderdome O.G. Eric Bugera and pick his brain about some coaching topics. We grill him about how important education is for all trainers but also highlighting the importance of getting in reps yourself in order to maintain credibility about the services you provide. We discuss the objective nature of coaching strength for athletic performance and how it differs from coaching powerlifters or bodybuilders. Finally, we talk about influencers in the social media space and how they advertise and promote well but their tangible benefits to people can be less, and how this can be remedied by the careful scrutiny of coaching. Enjoy!

Welcome to Episode 2! Today we welcome a good friend of mine, Tom Henderson. Tom is basically going to be a co-host of this show until he gets tired of hearing me yell about things. Today we have a brief chat about the COVID vaccine and our thoughts about it in general (take it with a grain of salt, we're teenagers). We dive into our respective training histories that share many similarities and reminisce about our embarrassing first bench experiences. We compare notes about our training influences and how we got into powerlifting. Lastly, we finish with a discussion about our position in an industry where misinformation and ego-driven content run rampant and how we hope to do our best to leave a positive impact in our wake and help as many people as possible.

Welcome to Episode 1! We're extremely excited to bring this to you and we hope you have as much fun listening as we did recording.
In this episode, we start with a recap of the Pre-Script meetup that Mahan planned last week and Mahan shares his thoughts on what a great experience it was. We discuss linguistics at length and the nuances and how the experiences of learning new languages allows for better communication. We also discuss the similarities and differences of our upbringings with regards to digital exposure and what a threat it poses to the development of children today (take it with a grain of salt. We don't have kids).
