Hello and welcome to season two of Just Breathe!

In today's episode, i'll be chatting to Zora Benhamou, a 50+ gerontologist, nomad and podcast host of the Hack My Age podcast, focusing on biohacking for women over 50. Zora is on a mission to disrupt ageist stereotypes so women in their 50s, 60s and 70s no longer need to say “60 is the new 40” and just show how amazing 60 looks and feels like.

A gerontologist is someone who studies ageing from a biological, sociological and psychological perspective. We know that healthy ageing is not only about diet and exercise. It’s so much more. We look at the whole life course and experiences that occur during this lifetime to see how it affects the ageing process.

We can TURN ON the “good” genes to feel and look younger than we are while preventing certain lifestyle diseases. However, if “undesirable” genes turn on, they can lead to fatigue, weight gain, lifestyle diseases like diabetes, heart attacks, cancer and a shorter health span. Healthspan is how I measure my lifespan in good health, free of disease and full of vitality. We can live to 100, but starting from 40 on we may live with illness, looking and feeling older than our chronological age OR WE CAN LIVE THOSE 40, 50, 60+ LAST YEARS WITH AMAZING VITALITY, INDEPENDENCE and with a biological age much younger than our chronological age.

I empower the modern woman to take ageing into their own hands, slow it down or embrace it by sharing the secrets of longevity I learn from ageing populations around the world. We all have the capacity for a younger biological age. Become the BEST version of yourself." - Zora

In today’s episode I’ll be having a powerful conversation with Oxygen Advantage Advanced Instructor and Pilot, Andy from Resilient Aviator. Andy is a Training Captain on the Airbus A330, and after discovering the benefits of functional breathing for himself, he is now championing the use of breathwork for pilots to improve performance and reduce stress and fatigue for success and longevity in this demanding career.

Pilots enjoy a lot of responsibility, but typically work unsociable hours with fatiguing schedules and are constantly assessed, often encountering complex problems. These factors are also experienced by many others in society so the concepts are widely applicable. In over twenty years of flying, Andy has experienced many developments in safety, training methods and aviation human factors - the interface between pilots and how they operate an aircraft under different pressures and demands.

Using his many years of experience, Andy is on a mission to provide tangible techniques and training to develop pilots using real awareness of their physiology, empowering them to take control of their autonomic nervous system with the breath. Andy is sharing the wide-ranging benefits of breathwork to perfectly complement more ‘traditional’ pilot training- supporting quality of life and enabling calm, confident, resilient and balanced decision-makers in the cockpit.

Follow Andy on Instagram at Resilient Aviator for all his latest amazing content.

Visit Andy’s website for information on how he can provide airlines with real-life human factors initial and recurrent training using breathwork, plus workshops and one-to-one coaching.

Andy will be joining David Jackson, Catherine and Lizzie at Rooted Life’s next Connection event- ‘Rest, Recharge, Reorientate’ in the Cotswolds on the 2nd Oct.

In today's powerful episode I'll be chatting to Fleur Conway, aka Fleur core prana about the power of the breath through peri/post-menopause. This is a chapter of life where so many women feel isolated, unseen and unheard due to limited resources and nowhere near enough dedicated studies. Fleur is working with many women to make menopause a smoother transitional process, making it one of empowerment rather than being victims of their own bodies. Fleur’s life has always been about being in connection with nature, and animals and finding understanding, balance and coherence with the natural laws of life.

Over the years she has studied and gained much knowledge in many areas of health and wellness for both animals and people, where she integrates all aspects of Mind Body and Soul into the healing process of each individual.

She is a certified Low-Pressure Fitness instructor which opened up the doors to further research and a deeper interest in the Breath. (Low-Pressure Fitness is a comprehensive fitness discipline which deeply involves posture, breathwork, hipopressive & neurodynamic exercises)

Fleur has always felt there was a lack of consciousness and continuity regarding the breath throughout daily life and this is where Oxygen Advantage has filled that emptiness and has now provided her with the knowledge and tools she felt were lacking.

“If a person’s breath is out of balance, their whole being will be out of balance”

Fleur was featured in the book Well-Being for Children: A handbook for parents to support the emotional well-being of their children is officially available in Kindle & paperback.

Today's powerful conversation is with the founder and organiser of the Children's Mental Health Matters summit, Cassie Swift. Cassie is the founder of her children's life coaching company, True You, whereby the summit was born after receiving an overwhelming demand from practitioners to spread their knowledge. She now has over 50 speakers at the summit talking the topics of dealing with eating disorders, self-harm and anxiety in children and teens as well as menstrual cycle awareness for first-time teens, guided by myself, hypnotherapy, the power of affirmations, dealing with trauma, coping with tantrums, you name it, it's on there!

**Tickets are only £7.00 to cover costs, with the wealth of knowledge involved it really is a no brainer so make sure you get your tickets using the link below:

https://childrensmentalhealthmatterssummit.co.uk**More on the summit below:

"This event has been curated from our passion for children’s mental health and the need to grow awareness. We want to help people learn more so that we are more educated and able to help our children better. The concept was birthed through the idea of wanting to bring a few professionals together in order to share their insights and to help families who need and want support.

What has transpired is an event of 50 speakers sharing their expertise, which will enable you to learn, understand and help your family become connected and calmer. As a child myself, I experienced bullying throughout my entire school life and due to this, I obviously didn’t enjoy school. I wish that there had been a Children’s Life Coach I could have turned to because as a result over the years my mental health deteriorated. This is not something I wish for any child and no child deserves to feel this way or experience what I went through." - Cassie Swift

In today's powerful conversation i'll be chatting to Dr Crisitna Fraval about all things Osteopathy, orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) and of course, breathing!

Christina's story is awe inspiring, I hope you really enjoy the conversation..

More about Christina:

"Through my work as an osteopath, I started to notice more and more breathing issues as part of the clinical picture in my patients. This gave me the impetus to further my knowledge and study OMT and Buteyko based breathing education. In the last 5 years I have worked with adults and children in resolving breathing dysfunction. I work collaboratively with various wholistic dentists with a focus in sleep medicine assisting patients with mouth breathing, teeth grinding, snoring, sleep apnoea, malocclusion, pre-orthodontics, jaw pain, craniofacial pain and tongue tie.

One of my children from a young age had issues with blocked ears, chronic congestion, mouth breathing, behavioural issues, bed wetting and dental crowding. Through my study and working with a wholisitic dentist I was able help my son overcome many of these issues by incorporating OMT and breathing exercises alongside the osteopathic treatment he received.

I believe we all have the ability to heal from within given the right environment. The body has a self healing mechanism which is constantly striving for optimum health."

Today's solo episode with me, Georgie Lawlor, is inspired by a conversation all about how we seem to have adopted this "fix me" mindset when it comes to approaching our health and wellbeing. Matt, an Osteopath who I am totally getting in the podcast, pointed out the alternate to this transactional "I'll do this, so I'll get this" mindset with a different approach. A "being" approach to our health. Accepting our circumstances for what they are, utilising the adversity as a tool for growth and simply being curious about how aware we can be and what we can learn about our relationship with our own bodies and minds. From this place, we can really see some improvement. Because we remove the stress of having a specific objective.

This weeks episode begins with a little breath work, that you can do from absolutely anywhere, to calm and focus the mind.

In today's powerful conversation I'll be chatting to fellow Oxygen Advantage master instructor, Anastasis Tzanis about the power of using functional breathing techniques in Yoga both on and off the mat.

From Greece to New York to London – Anastasis Tzanis serviced the Greek Special Forces as a paratrooper for 1 year, traded currency derivates in New York and London for 7 years and picked up a couple of other dopamine-driven hobbies along the way. During his years in banking he noticed how detrimental stress can be on our bodies – leading to stiffness, early ageing and injury.

This led him to begin his studies in yoga & nutritional therapy in 2009 where he developed a wellness protocol combining innovative yoga modalities with the fundamentals of breathwork. He has dedicated his life to understand the link between mind and body, the role of breath towards strengthening the connection between the 2, and prove that the mind and body are one on an empirical level.

Standing on the shoulders of his teachers, led him to his awardance as a top yoga teacher in London by AboutTime magazine (in 2017), teaching the breathing module at the HotPod Yoga Teacher’s Training (since 2018) and leading the wellness offsite for the Crisis Management team of Fortune 500 company (in 2019). He strives to provide his clients: individuals and work teams, with an achievable, individualized protocol and full-time, reliable support throughout its implementation.

Anastasis will be pioneering the OA for Yoga instructors course with Patrick McKeown in November this year, to find out more follow this link: https://oxygenadvantage.com/breathing-for-yoga-online-course/

In today's powerful conversation I'll be chatting to Anastasia Hatzivisalou, CEO and Founder of Superablemind, aka S.A.M. The S.A.M method is heavily steeped in the Science of Neuroplasticity – the ability of the brain to learn and un-learn as well as to change and adapt to the environment. ‘Neuro’ references our brain cells whilst ‘plasticity’ is the ability that our learning cells have to be flexible and adaptive to our changing circumstances.

Negative behaviours can be brought on by a saturation of stress hormones and overuse of the limbic brain. Reaction and impulsiveness become default responses. A stressor may represent an external challenge such as a divorce, a loss or a difficult colleague or boss. It could also be a human condition like depression or anxiety that we learn and become – in response to our immediate environment.

Coping mechanisms are adopted in response to these environmental conditions. What we focus on most of the time we learn, reinforce and become. These uncomfortable states tell us that we are not functioning optimally and give us both clue and cue that something needs changing, learning or unlearning.

S.A.M ~ Superablemind ~ A method for training the mind and brain in such a way that teaches us how to better shape and regulate our thoughts, emotions, events and human conditions. It re-wires the brain and mind to seven behaviours, forty-three ideologies and three incantations that empower us to access a more functional, rational and creative level of mind.To learn more about Anastasia's work follow think link: https://www.superablemind.com

As the pandemic continues our perception of time seems to be changing and a lot of us feel as if we've lost control over our time management and how we handle our energy.

In this episode I'll be sharing my thoughts on this issue and the key points from a great Ted Talk by Laura Vanderkam sharing some excellent tips on how we can utilise our time better.

In today's powerful episode I'll be chatting to Laura Lam. Laura is a registered Nutritional Therapist and Functional Medicine Practitioner who helps individuals regain control over their health.

"Having suffered from Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) for a number of years, I understand how debilitating digestive problems can be to every day life. I also saw how poor digestion impacted other areas of my health, including my focus, energy and hormonal imbalances.

Throughout my clinical training, I deduced the root cause of my IBS by using functional medicine and comprehensive lab testing. I then resolved my IBS by using the right nutrition and lifestyle measures. I quickly realised that digestion is linked to all aspects of health, because the food we eat impacts every single chemical reaction in our bodies."

Laura and I got talking about the relationship between stress and digestion as well as how the food we eat aligns with our self worth, confidence and emotional bodies.

In today's powerful conversation I'll be chatting to a good friend of mine, Pip, on the topic of addiction in young adults. Pip was generous enough to share her story with me on how she overcame her own addiction using exercise and spiritual practises, particularly the practise of yoga.

We also got chatting about how alcoholism seems to have become normalised in young adults and is often treated as some sort of strange initiation into adult hood creating unnecessary peer pressure and an unhealthy idea of "normal". We need to swap the guilt and shame for empowerment and support when it comes to addiction and I hope this conversation is a small step towards that.

I really hope this series empowers you to recognise your bodies for the incredible vessel of life force energy that it is and inspires you to deepen your relationship with your own body and mind - that really is the first step to optimising your health and wellbeing, AWARENESS.

Today's powerful episode is something a little bit different. An incredibly inspiring woman and good friend of mine, Jo Hainsworth, has written an incredible piece on copper toxicity, explaining how it can occur and how many women across the world are suffering with the effects without even knowing it.

Jo has been learning everything she can to support herself in recovery from severe PTSD, and along the way has found that she can use the knowledge and tools she's learnt to help others out on their journey. She is retired and spends some of her time acting as a voluntary health educator, connecting people with the resources they need. She is driven by the desire to get the resources that she didn't have earlier on her journey into the hands of those who could use them now.

Today's conversation is all about the power of learning to listen to your bodily cues for when, how much and for how long when it comes to exercising and eating. We explore the idea of swapping a torturous regime for child-like exploration and fun. I think a lot of us has forgotten how intelligent our bodies our at communicating it's needs to us an it's about time we started listening.

Keep an eye on my social media channels for an upcoming workshop with Philippe and myself all about living mindfully and intuitively.

In today's powerful conversation I'll be chatting with Anastasia Hatzivasilou, CEO and founder of Super Able Mind and my personal therapist who's guidance has been an enormous part of my personal journey of growth. Anastasia was generous enough to share her personal journey with me and how the S.A.M method came to fruition as well as why cultivating a strong mindset is the key to growth.

It re-wires the brain and mind to seven behaviours, forty-three ideologies and three incantations that empower us to access a more functional, rational and creative level of mind.To find out more visit: https://www.superablemind.com

We got chatting about Bryony's personal journey through her operatic training and the rest of her singing career, the importance of breath in singing and how singing always starts with the breath, as well as the healing powers of the voice when it comes to dealing with mental health issues and treating long covid.

A New York Times article recently wrote about the English National Opera teaming up with hospitals to help treat long covid using breathing and singing techniques utilised in operatic training to great success!

An excerpt from the article below describes one patients experience;

Covid-19 had left him feeling battered, he said; after he was discharged from hospital, he’d had to make several visits to the emergency room, and was prescribed months of follow-up treatment for blood clots and respiratory issues. “Everything I did, I was struggling for air,” he said.

He added that even a few simple breathing exercises had quickly made a huge difference. “The program really does help,” he said. “Physically, mentally, in terms of anxiety.”

In today's feel good Friday mini episode I'll be diving into one of my favourites; Sapiens: A brief history of human kind by Yuval Noah Harari.

Homo sapiens rules the world because it is the only animal that can believe in things that exist purely in its own imagination, such as gods, states, money and human rights.

Starting from this provocative idea, Sapiens goes on to retell the history of our species from a completely fresh perspective. It explains that money is the most pluralistic system of mutual trust ever devised; that capitalism is the most successful religion ever invented; that the treatment of animals in modern agriculture is probably the worst crime in history; and that even though we are far more powerful than our ancient ancestors, we aren’t much happier.

By combining profound insights with a remarkably vivid language, Sapiens acquired cult status among diverse audiences, captivating teenagers as well as university professors, animal rights activists alongside government ministers. By 2018, over 10 million copies have been sold, and the book has been translated into nearly 50 languages.

In today's mini feel good Friday episode I'll be sharing an excerpt from Breath: The new science of a lost art by James Nestor.

James Nestor is a Journalist who conveys so brilliantly in his book that there is nothing more essential to our health and wellbeing than breathing: take air in, let it out, repeat 25,000 times a day. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences.

He reveals how the answers aren't found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo, Brazil.

Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices like Pranayama, Sudarshan Kriya and Tummo and teams up with pulmonary tinkerers to scientifically test longheld beliefs about how we breathe.

Philippe’s holistic technique gives you back your confidence, allows you to retake control and enjoy food guilt-free. Step by step, his clients identify the patterns in their eating habits and learn how to eat what they like whilst losing weight for good.

In this episode I'll be talking to Dom Berry about his experience with meditation and spiritual tradition, having lived in many monastery and ashrams learning about the nature of consciousness paying particular attention to his experience of Vipassana meditations. Dom also shares his experience of floating; floatation therapy is the practice of lying back in a floatation tank and experiencing a blissful, healing state and a feeling of weightlessness. Dom wants to spread the power of meditation to as many people as he can.

What is vipassana?

Vipassana, which means to see things as they really are, is one of India's most ancient techniques of meditation. It was taught in India more than 2500 years ago as a universal remedy for universal ills, i.e., an Art of Living.

The technique of Vipassana Meditation is taught at ten-day residential courses during which participants learn the basics of the method, and practice sufficiently to experience its beneficial results.

What is floating?
The water in each pod contains half a tonne of Epsom salt, allowing you to float effortlessly. It matches the temperature of your skin and the air, giving you the feeling of complete weightlessness. It’s usually pitch black and silent in the pod too, unless you wish to have relaxing music, or the light on.

Free from sensory input, the muscular-skeletal system and sympathetic nervous system wind down into a state of deep relaxation and serenity, in which your body and mind can heal and replenish - resulting in many benefits, like reduced stress and better sleep.
