After a year away from the mic… I’m back (kinda). And a LOT has changed.
In this episode, I’m giving you an unfiltered life and business update – from having my third baby to running my business on just 1- 2 hours of work a day.
We’re talking about how business went during my 8-month maternity leave, how my agency kept running without me, and why my role in my business looks completely different now.
I’m also sharing the big decisions I’ve made behind the scenes, like leaving the HubSpot Podcast Network, starting a YouTube channel, and rethinking how I approach marketing in this season of life.
Enjoy! :D

In this episode (an Oldie But Goodie), she shares her near-catastrophic business mistake of losing track of her cash flow, and she walks us through her strategies for managing finances, the lessons she’s learned, and money management advice for small business owners.
We also get into the difference between a virtual assistant and an online business manager, common hiring mistakes, and what to look out for when spending money on tools.

In this interview, Laura shares her biggest business mistake: the inability to separate her personal identity from her business. (It's an Oldie But Goodie!)
I talk about my own personal loss and Laura recounts her journey from viral music creation on social media to redefining her business approach after a critical injury.
Together, we examine how tying your identity too closely to business successes can often be disastrous.

On the Freelance Business Unlocked podcast with Anja Lordanić, I share how I use email to build trust, spark action, and keep sales steady – without feeling overly salesy.
We talk emails that actually gets replies, simple segmentation that doesn’t take up your entire week, and the tiny edits that make one email feel impossibly personal.
We also get into experimenting (even with a small list), writing that sounds like you (not a template), values-led marketing, and staying consistent when life gets busy.
If you want marketing emails people open, read and buy from, this episode gives you strategies you can implement today.

Amy Posner and Kirsty Fanton have been (highly successful) lone wolves in the online business world for years. So when they teamed up to launch a new group coaching programme, they were so excited to be working together they forgot to create a launch strategy.
Without a plan, their launch totally flopped. They sold just 2 spots.
On this episode of Mistakes That Made Me, Amy and Kirsty join me for a conversation about how us business owners sometimes preach one thing for our clients and but then don't do the same thing for ourselves. As Amy puts it, "It’s difficult to do for yourself what you do naturally for your clients".
Listen to this episode to understand how they bounced back from their launch failure.

This is one of the most honest, detailed conversations I’ve had about what it really looked like to evolve from a solo email strategist to building a micro-agency. (Originally published on the Confessions with Jess and Cindy podcast).
Jess, Cindy, and I talk about:
If you’ve ever thought about expanding your business beyond just you, this episode gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the why, the how, and the very real challenges that come with it.
Huge thank you to Jess and Cindy for having me – and for asking the questions that really pulled back the curtain on this next chapter of my business.

Today’s episode is a little different because the mic’s turned on me.
This conversation was originally recorded for Sonia Thompson’s Inclusion and Marketing podcast, and it was such an important one, I wanted to share it with you here too.
Sonia and I talk about what it really means to plan inclusive business events – especially for people who identify as being underrepresented or underserved communities.
I share my personal experiences as a visibly Muslim woman who doesn’t drink alcohol or engage in physical contact with men, and how that’s often made it difficult to fully participate in professional events.
From dodging hugs and skipping networking sessions at bars… to sparking an accidental ice cream social that everyone wanted to join… this episode is full of honest reflections, lightbulb moments, and actionable ideas for making your events (and your business) more inclusive for everyone.
If you’ve ever felt like you didn’t quite fit in at a business event – or you’re someone who wants to create safer, more welcoming spaces for all your attendees – this one’s for you.
Thank you to Sonia for hosting such a thoughtful conversation, and for letting me share it with you here.

Getting fired hurts.
But getting fired for the thing you’re actually an expert at is another level of pain.
My guest is Claire Pelletreau, conversion expert and host of the Get Paid Podcast. (This is an Oldie But Goodie epsiode!)
In this episode, Claire shares the painful moment when she was fired for making a huge mistake in her job. She explains how being fired forced her to focus on the most important aspect of her job: the results. And how it's that focus that propelled her to the tremendous success that came afterwards.

This might be my favourite episode of Mistakes That Made Me 😍 (An oldie but goodie!)
Caroline and Jason Zook are two creatives who are full of ideas. They’re the founders of Wandering Aimfully – the UN-boring coaching program for intentional online business owners – and Teachery: a software platform for creating and hosting online courses.
After more than a decade of online entrepreneurship, they found that constantly creating and launching new ideas is exhausting. They figured there had to be another way.
In this episode of Mistakes That Made Me, the Zooks describe how putting less energy into new ideas and more energy into refining existing ideas has created two reliable, profitable, and intentional businesses for them.

I’m almost 34 weeks pregnant 🤰🏽 So today I’m spilling all the details on how I’m prepping for an extended maternity leave while making sure my email agency keeps running smoothly without me.
I’m also taking a trip down memory lane and sharing what I learned from my first maternity leave as a business owner (back in 2021) – what worked, what didn’t, and how those lessons shaped the plan I’m putting into action this time.
I break down how I’ve set my finances, outlined my goals, and hired an incredible team to step in while I’m away.
Even if maternity leave isn’t on your radar, the tips and strategies I’m sharing will help any business owner plan for an extended break.
We all need a little time off now and then, right?

Ever trusted a coach more than you trust yourself? Even when it comes to your own business, your own wants and needs, your own goals?
We can relate!
Today I’m chatting to Keenya Kelly – a video marketing and social media strategist and founder of Keenya Kelly LLC.
Keenya shares how she regained her confidence and autonomy in business after losing self-trust when she invested heavily in high-ticket coaches.
We talk about the importance of trusting yourself, the pitfalls of feeling like your coaches know everything (while you know nothing), and ways to balance learning from others while still feeling confident in your own abilities.
This episode also touches on Keenya's experience with TikTok marketing, building a community, and setting personal boundaries when you’re visible in the online world.

Dielle Charon has cracked the code. This business coach earned more than a million dollars in 2022 and $370K in the first 2 months of 2023. She says one of the reasons for this success is her focus on delivering quality programmes and buttoning up her business processes.
But it took a lot of mindset work to give up chasing the glamour of internet fame and social media celebrity.
In this episode, Dielle shares how her biggest mistake early on in her coaching business was comparing herself to other business coaches on social media and spending too much time trying to become popular online. Now, she’s focused on being comfortable with her own experiences and skills to find the success she's looking for.

Have you ever shied away from the spotlight, thinking that it might help your business rather than hurt it?
Black women and visibly Muslim women have to decide how they want to show up for their businesses — all while navigating the complex expectations and stereotypes that come along with their identities.
My guest is Jennifer Ogunyemi, the founder of Sisters in Business, the largest organization in the UK dedicated to inspiring, connecting, and elevating Muslim women in business. Jennifer serves as a mentor to countless Muslim women. But before her business took off, she struggled with how to show up visibly in her business. In fact, while her business was taking off, no one knew that a Black woman was behind it. That led her to miss out on opportunities and affirmation as a business owner. Now, she encourages Muslim women to show up for themselves.

Have you ever had a brilliant business idea, then watched someone else take that idea and run with it because you took too long to make it happen?
My guest is Belinda Weaver, the owner of Copywrite Matters and a copy coach in the copywriting industry.
Belinda created the concept for a membership community that would scale her business…and then...she sat on it (mostly because she was juggling two young kids).
While she waited for the perfect time to launch, other copywriters jumped on the same idea, created their own membership, and grew them into successful businesses.
Going at a pace that felt slower than everyone around her made Belinda rethink her work-life balance, the speed at which she's growing her business, and her relationship between motherhood and being a business owner.

We talk a lot about mistakes on this podcast. This time, I want to talk about how to do something right.
Instead of our usual interview, I delve into the art and science of effective email marketing following recent deliverability updates from major email providers like Google and Yahoo.
I share to ensure your emails continue to reach your subscribers' inboxes, and I give you the scoop on list cleaning, making unsubscribing easy, maximising subscriber engagement, nurturing subscribers, and sending targeted, relevant emails.
I did this presentation as a webinar for The Marketing Meetup, a community of 50,000 marketers last month. Hope you love it! :)

Laura Belgray has made millions by being herself and writing some of the best story-based marketing emails.
She’s the founder of Talking Shrimp, a copywriting service, and is known for helping people find the words and courage to make their business an expression of their personality. And I’m a HUGE fangirl (There - I said it! Ha!)
In this episode, we talk about how Laura made the mistake of ghosting her email subscribers for months — only to return to them pushing a pricey offer, hoping to cash in on affiliate commissions.
That didn’t go well.
We chat about her approach to writing marketing emails now, the importance of building trust, why laziness is a part of her brand, how being decidedly different has helped her attract a huge following, AND her new book: Tough Titties: On Living Your Best Life When You’re the F-ing Worst’.

Every Black woman knows what it means to play the “Nice Black Girl" in the workplace. Just like every Black woman knows what it means to be labeled the “Angry Black Woman”.
Between these two labels, Black women have to make hard choices about how they engage, disagree, and work with their colleagues and clients, while maintaining their professional integrity and sense of identity and well-being.
In this episode of Mistakes That Made Me, I interview ethnic and gender pay gaps consultant Michelle Gyimah about how she navigated client relationships as a Black woman who was trying to avoid being stereotyped as the "Angry Black Woman". Michelle shares the mistake this led her to make, and what you can learn from it.

Why is the idea of earning 6 figures of revenue so coveted? And why are we willing to make so many sacrifices to get there?
In this episode of Mistakes That Made Me, I interview self-transformation coach LaYinka Sanni about how she dropped thousands of pounds on a coach that promised her she could make 6 figures A MONTH...when she wasn't even making £1000 a month.
LaYinka quickly realised she wasn't ready for this programme, and she was left feeling worse about her ability to run a successful business.
You’ll hear how LaYinka came to terms with her mistake and how she eventually achieved business success. We also break down why she was so focused on earning 6 figures, so early on in her career.

Tarzan Kay trusted a highly respected sales guru to teach her how to sell online. And she readily admits that led to a seven-figure business. But she later realised that what he really taught her was how to use persuasion to her own advantage and sell people courses they didn't need.
In this episode of Mistakes That Made, I talk with email marketing and storytelling expert Tarzan Kay about the dangers of online courses and coaching that use persuasive marketing tactics to take advantage of people. We talk about how these tactics can work on even the savviest of business people and how this can be detrimental to those who are new to the online business world.

Sometimes, we don’t know when or how to say no.
My guest for this episode is Star Melancon. Star is a scientist turned entrepreneur who struggled with setting boundaries in her corporate workplace before launching her own financial consulting business. Star thought removing herself from the corporate environment would restore her ability to set boundaries and give her a healthy work-life balance.
But Star learned that without true transformation, she would continue the same people-pleasing practices that led to serious physical and mental health consequences. That mistake forced her to turn inward and figure out what made her put everyone else's needs before her own.

Getting fired hurts.
But getting fired for the thing you’re actually an expert at is another level of pain.
My guest is Claire Pelletreau, conversion expert and host of the Get Paid Podcast.

Have you ever shied away from the spotlight, thinking it might help your business rather than hurt it?
Black women and visibly Muslim women have to decide how they want to show up for their businesses — all while navigating the complex expectations and stereotypes that come along with their identities.
My guest is Jennifer Ogunyemi, the founder of Sisters in Business, an organisation that's dedicated to inspiring, connecting, and elevating Muslim women.
Jennifer is a mentor to countless Muslim women. But before her business took off, she struggled with how to show up visibly in her business.
In fact, while her business was taking off, no one knew that a black woman was behind it – which meant she missed on opportunities and the chance to get recognitionfor her hard work.

My guest is Vivian Kaye – the CEO of KinkyCurlyYaki – a business and empowerment expert, a keynote speaker, and a TV and podcast personality who lost $12,000 on a photo shoot that went wrong. This mistake forced Vivian to think more deeply about her instincts and how those instincts have helped her business thrive.

Introducing Mistakes That Made Me, the podcast that asks extraordinary business owners to share their biggest business mistakes so you know what not to do on your road to success.
Hosted by Eman Ismail, this podcast dives into painful, humiliating, make your bank account cry, kind of mistakes made by business owners who are some of the most clever, experienced, wealthiest and savvy people we know.
But we don't just share mistakes on this podcast, we celebrate them. Because a lot of the time, our biggest business mistakes is the lesson we needed to learn the most.
