Wouldn’t it be great if our kids always came up to us and said, “Mom, Dad, this is how I’ve been feeling lately?” But that rarely - if ever - happens. More often than not, our children’s behavior is their form of communication, indicating their need for specific sensory input or support.

This week, we dive into the world of sensory processing with Emily Charles, a seasoned professional with a Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy, specializing in pediatric care since 2009. When we hold ourselves to too high of a standard as parents, we burn out and we run ourselves down. It’s okay to be tired, confused, angry, uncertain, stresses this week’s guest, Robin Hornstein. We are of course going to make mistakes as parents. So, what does course correction look like?

Dr. Nicole Lipkin talks to Robin Hornstein, a licensed psychologist and counselor, who specializes in treating eating disorders, anxiety, grief, life transitions and works closely with the LGBTQIA+ community.

Robin talks about forgiving yourself as a parent and giving yourself a break when it comes to feeling like you don’t know everything or you’re making mistakes or maybe you don’t even feel like being a parent on a given day. It’s all part of the parenting package and it’s all perfectly normal.

Robin stresses that we innately know more than we think we do.

“When we validate [our children’s emotions],” says this week’s guest, Erika Malm, “we're helping our kids to be able to learn how to self-regulate so that they don't have to turn to symptoms or substances or to other people for validation.”

This week’s guest, Erika Malm, discusses emotion coaching for parents, the practice of equipping parents and caretakers with tools to help their own kiddos so they’re not solely reliant on a therapist.

Erika talks about the importance of validating our children’s experience and their emotions rather than going straight to problem solving and soothing.

Erika is the founder and director of the Erika Malm Collective in NYC (erikamalm.com). She has spent over 15 years treating trauma and eating disorders, and she's passionate about supporting individuals, couples, and families with effective care that's informed by recent developments in neuroscience.

Race is an extremely tough subject to tackle with your child. “What if I mess up and say the wrong thing?” is a common anxiety among parents. Messing up is ok, but what happens when you mess up is important to navigate. How should you approach that as an adult? How should you help your child approach it?

This week, Teran Tadal, the Director of Equity and Inclusion at the Wharton Undergraduate Division at the University of Pennsylvania (UPENN), talks to Dr. Nicole Lipkin about why it’s important to talk to kids about race and identity, and more importantly how to talk with your child about race or identity.

If you’ve ever struggled with how to open up the conversation around race with your child, this is the episode to listen to.

Guest: Teran Tadal, Director of Equity and Inclusion at the Wharton Undergraduate Division at the University of Pennsylvania.

If you’ve ever wondered, “How does anyone maintain a 50/50 work/life balance?” You’re not alone. And the good news is, it’s a myth.

“Work/life balance is a joke,” says Marissa Green, the creator of Work/Life Reimagined, a work/life design program for working parents. She also hosts The Reimagine Ambition podcast focused on inspiring parents to design work/life on their own terms.

Marissa draws on 20 years of building organizational culture through human-centered design to help working parents rethink balance in a modern world and use creative intention to build a work/life design that helps the whole family thrive.

Marissa stresses that work/life balance is specific to each parenting adult and is never the 50/50 we imagine. We can achieve the balance we want, but we need to design it ourselves, or we will be led by external forces.

Guest: Marissa Green, creator of Work/Life Reimagined.

What are the signs that your child might have gender identity questions? How do you create an environment where your kids feel comfortable talking to you about gender identity?

These can be difficult, uncomfortable questions for many parents, but if we hold a lens of loving curiosity and attempt to understand the journey of self exploration your child is on, it will make it that much easier for all parties.

Dr. Nicole Lipkin speaks with psychotherapist Coleman Kraus, who specializes in working with adolescents and young adults, LGBTQ+ identities and exploration, eating disorders, trauma, and life transitions.

Coleman offers great advice for parents on how to create a gender-inclusive environment for their children, and suggests seeking out gender expansive experiences in order to normalize that world for both parent and child.

Additionally, Coleman shares their own experience growing up in a body that didn’t match how they felt internally, feeling like they had to hide their true identity and the trauma that created for them.

Guest: Coleman Kraus, psychotherapist.

How do children's responses to grief differ from adults, and why is it important to recognize these differences? At what point should parents or caregivers consider seeking professional help for a grieving child, and what signs should they look out for?

These are some of the questions Dr. Nicole Lipkin and her guests, Dr. Ray Christener and Paul Wagner explore in this week’s episode. Additionally, they discuss how to help kids communicate their feelings, how to create a safe environment for emotions to be processed, and the importance for parents to process their own emotions as well.

Dr. Christener is a licensed psychologist and a certified school psychologist in Pennsylvania, a nationally certified school psychologist, and a nationally registered health service psychologist. His expertise encompasses both clinical and school psychology, with a board certification in behavioral and cognitive psychology.

Paul Wagner is an outpatient therapist at Cognitive Health Solutions and a co-host of the Psyched to Practice podcast. There is a saying: “When you meet one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism.” No two children with autism are the same, but this is true of all children stresses this week’s guest, Jennifer Berzok.

Jennifer is the mother of an autistic son, an attorney, and government relations consultant who lobbies Congress on health policy issues; additionally, she provides training to grassroots advocates.

Jennifer talks about the experience of discovering her child was autistic, the support systems she and her husband leaned on, how every child is different and has their trajectory whether they’re on the spectrum or not, and that you can’t trust every doctor’s opinion about how things will be for your family and your child.

Jennifer stresses that it’s important to follow the lead of the child and embrace a form of happiness and future that may be very different from the one you originally imagined.

Kris Holmes is a single parent with a background in sales and non-profit management. They are called to coach alongside single parents and to see them grow in confidence, care for self, boundaries with their kids, and to ultimately enjoy parenting as a JOY and release the OBLIGATIONS of what you were told it should be or look like. The year that I stopped spanking and started releasing obligations in parenting was the year that it all started coming together for me and those that I began serving and coaching. Parenting is a journey not a destination and along the journey let’s build a fun and fierce community of advocates for you, your kids, and your community.

ABOUT OUR GUEST

Hilary Katz received her Master’s in Social Work in 1999 from Simmons College School of Social Work. For over 20 years, Hilary has provided individual, group, couples and family therapy in both school and private practice settings. Hilary has contributed throughout the years to newspapers, family magazines and college zines and blogs as well as offered her expertise for news and tv outlets in the tristate area. Hilary also has provided and continues to provide workshops on communicating and collaborating with children to educators, parents/caretakers, and organizations that work with children outside of the school system. Hilary pulls from the philosophy that both children as well as adults do well if they can and uses the Cognitive Behavioral model to learn how to do better and feel better. Hilary stresses that life is full of tricky spots and if a person is struggling it certainly is not because they want to. Hilary’s main goal with all her clients is to learn how to identify their lagging skills that cause them to get stuck and ultimately strengthen them in order to grow and live a more productive, fulfilling life. Hilary is known to push her clients to understand the value of getting uncomfortable in order to grow, but she also utilizes the power of humor as well as creativity to teach and reinforce developing skills.

Hilary's Top 5 Take- a- ways!

  1. Kids do well if they can!
  2. Do not focus on the behavior! Focus on what led to the problematic behavior.
  3. Listen to your child. Make sure conversations are reciprocal and collaborative.
  4. Get creative when it is time for collaborations!
  5. Laugh and get silly with your child ! Why? Because it feels good!
