First Lutheran Church in Minot, North Dakota has many opportunities to serve the community, worship and grow in faith. We offer our weekly podcast show, sermons, news updates, special music and other fun things, so be sure to subscribe on your favorite service to stay up to date!
This is our final Lenten video and bible story for our 2024 “Stories of Salvation”. It is our hope that this practice has helped to get you into the rhythm of reading your bible every day and has been something that has helped you grow in your faith. Today we read Ezekiel 37, commonly known as the “Vally of Dry Bones”, and we hear about how God can bring life to even the most hopeless of situations. As we wait for the resurrection promise of Easter, we pray for God to bring new life to our live, our congregation, and our world.
Today we commemorate Good Friday as we reflect on Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for the sake of the world. We read the story in Luke 23 and ponder the love that is at the heart of what he is doing. In the face of the worst humanity throws at him, Jesus is obedient even to the point of dying on a cross. What do you notice in this story as you read it this year?
Today is actually Maundy Thursday (sorry for the slight confusion yesterday!) and we are reading another account from Jesus’ Last supper his disciples as told in Luke 22. An interesting and helpful tool we can use as we study the Bible is to compare and contrast stories from different gospels and see what we can discover. What do you hear or notice when you compare Luke 22 with John 13?
On this Maundy Thursday we read the traditional gospel story from John 13 of Jesus' washing his disciples' feet. Despite the fact that one will betray him and one will deny him, all are included in this humble act of service and love. Jesus teaches and embodies the "new" commandment, that we love one another. Join us for worship at noon or 6:00 as we, like Jesus and his friends, gather around a table and share a meal.
Our unwilling prophet Jonah got instructions from God and literally ran the other direction! After a brief stint in the belly of a fish, Jonah decides to carry out his God-given task. Then after Jonah’s throwing a fit and pouting, God uses a bush and a worm to teach Jonah a lesson. The story ends abruptly, leaving us with the question: Did Jonah learn anything? With the next question being: Did we?
We are back in Daniel today with the famous story commonly known as, “Daniel and the lion’s den”. In this story we hear again about his faithfulness to the true God in the face of demands to worship other gods. We also see another instance of the story we learned as kids not exactly matching up with what we read in Daniel 6.
Welcome to the beginning of Holy Week as we start with the story of Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem riding on a donkey surrounded by shouts of, “Hosana!” We know how this story ultimately ends, but it is important for us to sit with the different parts of the Passion Story and reflect on what they mean for us today. Today we encourage you to read this story from Matthew 21.
Would you defy a king and sacrifice your life in order to avoid bowing down to a statue of gold? In Daniel 3 we read that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego opt for a fiery furnace rather than worshiping an idol.
Suffering is something that humans have faced and struggled to understand since the dawn of time. Job is an ancient narrative that attempts to have a conversation about suffering and where God is during our darkest times. Job 1:1-3:10 sets the stage of this much longer story and presents, what most scholars believe should be read as an ancient parable, the opening of Job’s tale.
The book of Esther concludes with brightness and joy... and a lot of blood and vengeance. But, Mordecai's persecutor Haman is hanged on his own gallows, and the king grants Esther's plea to save the Jewish people. Remember to research the Jewish festival of Purim, which our Jewish neighbors are observing this coming weekend!
The story of Esther is almost like a fairy tale as a young orphaned girl rises to prominence as the new queen of the realm. When she learns that there is a plot to kill all the Jewish people in her land, she must decide if she will risk her own life in an attempt to save her people. We discuss chapters 1-4 today, with the exciting conclusion tomorrow!
Have you heard of the riches of Solomon? Today in 2 Chronicles 2:1-2; 3-5:1 we get to peek into the grand architecture and extravagant adornment of the vast temple that King Solomon constructs for the Lord. Read about gold and jewels, and then consider: what kind of surroundings make a space feel worshipful to you?
Today we’re back in the Old Testament as we read the story of Naaman in 2 Kings 5 washing in the Jordan river and being healed of his skin disease. This story is often read in relation to our baptism, which is great, but there is more to it! God cures a mighty military leader, who is an outsider, and the wisest people in the story are his servants. Read this story for yourself and see what connections you make with Baptism, faith, and God calling us to do the unexpected!
Welcome to Week 5 in our Lenten Series “Stories of Salvation” as we read a Bible story each day during the Season of Lent. Today is a Sunday, so we take a brake from the Old Testament and read a story of Jesus in the Gospel of Mark as he and his disciples try to get a break from people, but instead end up with a large crowd of hungry people with no Costco in sight. Read the story of Jesus the 5,000 today in Mark 6:30-56 and join the conversation!
Follow along with some stories of the great prophet Elijah in 1 Kings 17, 18:20-40. From speaking truth to power, to being fed by ravens, to raising a boy from the dead, and then slaughtering 450 prophets of Baal, Elijah has a full and busy ministry going!
In 2 Samuel 12, God responds to David's evil deeds by sending Nathan to show him his sin and lead him to repentance. While God does forgive and there is hope for the future, nevertheless, Bathsheba's baby dies. For some bonus reading: check out our Psalm for this Sunday (Ps. 51), which is attributed to David as a response to this episode with Bathsheba.
Today's story from 2 Samuel 11 is a heavy one that illustrates the pervasiveness and power of human sin. Our hero King David sees a beautiful woman and decides he must have her for himself, despite knowing she is married. His lust quickly leads to murder... and a whole mess of tragedy and consequence.
The story of David and Goliath is a tale that has made its way into our common vernacular, especially when it comes to sports. Today we read 1 Samuel 17, and we may be surprised that the story is a bit more brutal and bloodier than what we heard in Sunday School. This story is retold in countless children’s books, but Pastor Ellery found one that follows the biblical story with most of the gruesome details, through lego bricks!
How did a prophet in the Old Testament become a prophet? Today we read about the origin story of Samuel, who will become a great prophet in Israel, and involves God calling him while he is sleeping. This story is also the inspiration for the lovely hymn, “Here I Am, Lord”. Grab your bible and read his story in 1 Samuel 16 and see if you start humming the hymn while you do!
Have you ever read the whole story of Moses talking to God- “I AM WHO I AM”- from the bush that was on fire, but did not get burnt up? It is full of interesting statements and ideas that theologians from Christianity, Judaism, and Islam have discussed for thousands of years. Read Exodus 3 yourself and then join Pastor Ellery for a brief conversation about this amazing story from the bible!
Today we get to read some stories about women and their courage in the face of violence and power. Moses’ mom and sister, along with the midwifes Shiprah and Puah, and even the Pharoah’s daughter, stand up for what is right and save countless Hebrew children, including Moses. It’s Tuesday and today we are talking about the story of Joseph (of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” fame) being betrayed by his brothers and sold off to be a slave in Egypt. Joseph has many adventures during this time (you can read about all of them if you keep reading Genesis 39-50 for extra credit) and we are reminded that through it all, God is with him. Grab your Bible, read the story in Genesis 37, 39:1-5, and join Pastor Brandy for today’s conversation!

Happy Saturday everyone and welcome to our final tale of Week 1 as we continue to read Bible stories during Lent. Today we hear about Jacob and all his sons, including his most famous son, who happens to also be the youngest. You can read this story in Genesis 29-30:24 and then listen to Pastor Ellery share his thoughts! (sorry for the technical issue towards the end!)
Yesterday, we met Jacob and Esau, and today we continue reading their story of disfunction in Genesis 27, as Jacob, with the help of his mom Rebekah, plays dress up and tricks his father, Isaac, into giving him his blessing before he dies. What drama! Read the story yourself and then join us for the conversation!
In Genesis 25:19-34 we pick up the story of Isaac, (remember Sarah laughing when she found out she would be pregnant with him?) who is now going to be the father of two rascals, Jacob and Esau. Today we read the story of their birth and how Jacob gets Esau’s birthright for a bowl of soup!
Today we are reading Genesis 21:8-21 and we hear about God’s promise that is given to Hagar and Ishmael, despite the scorn that Sarah has shown them. Join Pastor Brandy to talk more about God’s care for the outsider and the expansiveness of God’s blessing for Ishmael.
Today we talk a bit about laughter in Genesis 18:1-15 & 21:1-7, as Sarah hears that news that in her old age, she is going to have a kid. Along with Abraham, (yes, they have both now received new names form God) they show hospitality to three strangers who bring them this divine good news. We then wrap up with the story of Sarah giving birth to son and naming him Isaac, whose story we will pick up in the coming chapters.

In his teaching in Mark 10:2-16, Jesus refers back to the conclusion of the creation story in Genesis 2 -- the two become one, joined by God. The Pharisees try to trip Jesus up by asking a legal question about divorce. And we are left to reflect on God's intentions for creation and our own community. These are the Scripture readings for Sunday, October 3rd.

Jesus uses some hyperbole to make his point about removing sin from our lives and Moses, along with the Israelites, fall into the trap of complaining, so God gets the whole community involved in refocusing their lives on the work they are called to do.
Jesus offers some shocking and thought-provoking words in his teaching in Mark 9:38-50. Hear also some reflection on the Old Testament reading from Numbers 11 as we look forward to worship on Sunday, September 29th.
Our Gospel reading today is from Mark 9:30-37 and it starts with the disciples again missing the point of Jesus' teaching as they argue about who is the greatest. Jesus then places a child in their midst and promises that whoever welcomes a little one like this welcomes him and the God who sent him. So a good question could be, "How Might We become more welcoming to ALL of God's children at First Lutheran?"
