In a newspaper the front page is invariably for the news of the day and our content will feature unraveling news. We also want to talk about faith, meaning, service and purpose in life. Alan's story is unlike most. After serving in the military and working in law enforcement, a devastating business collapse sent his life in an unexpected direction. What began as curiosity and an adrenaline-fueled impulse ultimately led to a series of bank robberies, a dramatic FBI arrest, and an eight-year federal prison sentence.

Alan describes the harsh realities of prison life, including 27 months in near-total isolation under Supermax conditions. He explains how prolonged isolation can breed bitterness and hopelessness—and why so many former inmates struggle to rebuild their lives after release. While in prison he taught a GED class for 50 inmates for three years.

Yet this conversation is not about crime. It is about restoration.

Alan shares how reconnecting with Becky, a lifelong family friend who later became his wife, gave him hope, purpose, and the strength to build a new life. He also discusses the enormous challenges of reentering society, especially the stigma of a felony conviction and the repeated loss of employment opportunities despite his qualifications.

I share one of the most personal stories of my life—the remarkable journey of my parents from war-torn Ukraine and Germany to freedom in the United States. As teenagers, they were taken from their homes during World War II and forced into slave labor in Nazi Germany. They survived relentless bombing, imprisonment, liberation by American forces, betrayal by Soviet authorities, and a daring escape into the British Zone before beginning a new life in a United Nations refugee camp.

I was born in that refugee camp in Germany, and later became a naturalized American citizen, an experience that forever shaped his understanding of freedom, gratitude, and identity. But this episode is more than a family history. It reveals profound spiritual parallels between physical refugees seeking a homeland and Christians called into the Kingdom of God.

7 A leader keeps growing!

There is a growing concern across many workplaces that emotional intelligence—often called EQ—is becoming less common or less developed in professional settings, especially among younger or newly hired employees. While broad generalizations should be avoided, many managers, educators, and organizational leaders are noticing shifts in communication style, conflict resolution, resilience, and interpersonal awareness.

Part of this change comes from the environment in which people have grown up and learned to work. Digital communication has replaced much face-to-face interaction. Remote work, texting, social media, and online education have created efficiency, but they have also reduced opportunities to develop the subtle human skills that come from reading body language, handling awkward conversations, listening deeply, and navigating disagreement in person.

Another factor is that modern education and hiring systems heavily reward measurable cognitive performance—grades, certifications, technical competence, analytical ability, and productivity metrics. These emphasize IQ. Yet organizations increasingly discover that high IQ alone does not guarantee effectiveness in leadership, teamwork, or long-term contribution.

Emotional intelligence includes qualities such as:

Self-awareness
Self-control
Empathy
Social awareness
Ability to receive correction
Adaptability
Conflict management
Encouragement of others
Humility and maturity under pressure

These are difficult to quantify on a résumé, but they often determine whether a person succeeds over time.

A workplace can survive a lack of brilliance more easily than it can survive chronic emotional dysfunction. One highly intelligent but emotionally volatile employee can damage morale, create division, exhaust leadership, and reduce trust across an entire team. By contrast, a person of moderate technical skill but high emotional maturity often becomes invaluable because they stabilize relationships, solve problems collaboratively, and inspire confidence.

Daniel Goleman, whose work popularized emotional intelligence, argued that EQ becomes increasingly important as people rise into leadership. A company may hire someone for IQ, but they are often promoted—or dismissed—because of EQ.

This does not mean IQ is unimportant. Intelligence quotient reflects reasoning ability, memory, analysis, and problem-solving capacity. Modern organizations absolutely need technically competent people. But IQ without emotional intelligence can produce arrogance, impatience, poor listening, relational blindness, and inability to lead people effectively.

The strongest leaders tend to combine both:

intellectual clarity and emotional steadiness,
analytical skill and empathy,
competence and character.

In many ways, emotional intelligence is what allows intelligence itself to become constructive rather than destructive.

There is also a spiritual dimension to this discussion. Wisdom is not merely accumulation of knowledge. The book of Proverbs repeatedly distinguishes between knowledge and wisdom. A person may know many things and still lack discretion, restraint, kindness, or understanding.

These are my personal observations from my 60th Feast of Tabernacles. This one was in Estonia, a country between Russia, the Baltic Sea, and the Nordic countries. 70 of us had a wonderful experience the first two weeks of October 2025.

The ten days between the Feast of Trumpets and the Day of Atonement are called the Days of Awe. Also known as the Days of Repentance. The fast day of Atonement is considered the most sacred day among many Jews.

Five years ago almost exactly I gave a sermon on the Day of Atonement in Cincinnati, Ohio about our visit to an event in Washington D.C. known as The Return which featured Jonathan Cahn who spoke along with many others about the need for our nation to return to God.

My third podcast with Kurt Hoyer about his archeological work in Israel. The first extra biblical links to the book of Isaiah have been found.

We talk about Scarabs Seals and Bullae. Seals are the objects, often rings used to mark a document with the ancient equivalent of a signature, scarabs, can be seals but are usually carved in the shape of a scarab beetle. Scarabs also have names of powerful Egyptian kings on them and were used for good luck charms. (Not really going to talk about scarabs much) Bullae are small dabs of clay that were used to seal documents and other things. They have the impression of the seal on them. Why care? Seals and bullae give us attestation of the names of biblical figures. Most recently an official from the court of Josiah, was found in Jerusalem. Other Biblical names found include. These laws seem in contrast to the soundness of many other provisions of the law.Under these purity laws people were declared unclean for certain activities that are mostly a normal part of life: a woman having her monthly period, a woman giving birth to a baby * people having sexual relations, having a skin disease, burying a dead relative etc. * Someone then touching a bed used by an unclean person was also declared unclean.*

Many commentators are of the opinion that such a regime would be impractical, burdensome and impossible to keep. At times, the purity laws also included strange rituals which are also difficult to understand. Jesus criticized the Pharisees for what (on the surface) seem to be similar type laws:Mark 7:4 When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. You stay calm when stressed

Example: During a tense situation, you take a deep breath and if stressed you suggest taking a brief pause to regroup your thoughts.

You don't take things personally

Example: When a coworker or spouse snaps at you, you think, "They're probably having a bad day," instead of feeling hurt or becoming angry.

You own your emotions

Example: After snapping at someone, you apologize quickly and own that you acted improperly when upset.

You recognize your emotional triggers

Example: You realize you're getting irritated when others interrupt you, and you calmly address it. You patiently ask them to allow you to finish your thoughts without interruption.

You know what’s within your control

Example: When your flight is canceled, you rebook calmly and make alternate plans instead of dwelling on the issue or taking your frustration out on others.

You learn from personal setbacks

Example: After your business presentation or idea is rejected, you don't stew, but instead analyze the feedback and improve for the next opportunity.

You sense others' emotions

Example: You notice a coworker is quieter than they usually are and ask, "Is everything okay?" You recognize when others are down or struggling.

Example: When a colleague shares a mistake they made, you respond, ”Do you understand what you did wrong? Was a lesson learned?” Upon their acknowledgment you reply, "Everyone messes up - how can I help you fix it?" You want to encourage mistakes to be openly discussed, not hidden.

You know when others need space

Example: A family member or co-worker seems upset, and instead of “pushing” them to talk, you say "I'm here when you're ready." You respect their need to privately process their emotions.

You help without tearing others down

Example: Instead of saying strongly, "This is wrong," you say, "This part could be improved by doing X or changing Y." You help them to perform better without demeaning them.

For hundreds of years after the death of Jesus, the people who professed to be His followers faced persecution from the Roman Empire. Then a miracle seemed to happen to this fragmented and diverse religious movement. Bruce Brill is a former analyst for the US National Security Agency called NSA.

During his tenure in the early 1970s he became aware of intelligence indicating imminent attacks on Israel by Egypt and Syria prior to the Yom Kippur war in 1973.

He asserts that this critical information was withheld from Israeli authorities and Egypt and Syria attacked Israel on Yom Kippur. More than 2660 Israeli soldiers were killed.

Loren Oesterly is a member of the United Church of God and lives in Azusa, California, right next to the devasting fires of the past week. He is the treasurer of the Church and works with pastor Tom Fish to distribute aid to victims of the fire. He gives a first-hand view that is sobering and and sobering at the same time. People have been helping one another as they search for answers to WHY.

Los Angeles / Bakersfield pastor Frank Fish talks about what he and his congregation have gone through in the January 2054 fires. One member family totally lost their home and all their belongings. Others evacuated. Pastor Frank and wife Valerie were in the Hurst fire area, but fortunately escaped damage.

The Bible is by far the most proliferated book throughout all history. No matter how man has tried to judge and destroy this literature, it has turned back on those critics and has judged them.

Ken and I reflect on our experience with the Bible and what understanding it has given us.

David Cobb gave a presentation at Brown County to the United Church of God over Pentecost weekend earlier in 2024. He spoke about how to build power, love, and a sound mind (mental health). This is so important now, when mental health has deteriorated due to all the pressures we must endure.

As we approach the fall Holy Day season, I have been thinking a lot about biblical prophecy. The upcoming High Days literally burst with prophetic meaning. Essentially one half of the plan of God – the death and resurrection of the prophesied Messiah, the time for us to come out of sin and come under the sacrifice of Christ, and the coming of the powerful Holy Spirit – these have been moved over into the “fulfilled” category of Bible prophecy. I was saddened to hear about the death of long-time minister Robin Jones from the United Kingdom. He died unexpectedly on May 21, 2024 at the age of 88. I took this photo of Mr. Jones at the funeral of John Ross Schroeder on March 20, 2014, in the United Kingdom. While there we got together for dinner to discuss many things that have happened in our lives in 50 years. Robin Jones was a pillar of the Church, serving as faculty at Ambassador College in Bricket Wood during my two years there. His was the Faculty Advisor to the Portfolio, the College newspaper I worked for. I was fortunate to be part of the student's trip to Israel in June 1969 which, he led.
As as senior I was on the Church visiting programme and visited brethren in the London area with regularity with him. It's been an honor to know him and his wife Shirley who preceded him._____________________ Links:

On July 19, 2024 our and many other people’s dear friend Les Booth left this earthly life. He was dearly beloved and a month later after his passing there remains an emptiness in our friendships and church fellowship with his absence.

Les was a devout Christian, a devoted husband and father, a thinker. He was also an enthusiast in various interests including the latest Technolgy, web development and most recently AI. I wanted to be in line to interview him about AI and did so in February of 2024 and did two podcasts with him for The Kubik Report.

Les Booth helped me with my first website 28 years ago. He designed the art work that is still the welcoming graphic on my site www.kubik.org.

He taught me HTML when there were no WSYWIG tools such as Front Page of Dreamweaver. He was always ahead of his time.

As a memorial to Les Booth I would like to replay my first podcast with him January 25 about AI.

Today I will answer a question that we have all asked ourselves:

What will happen to me when AND AFTER I die?

When the lights go out in this life and our bodies are lifeless, where will we be?

Is this life all there is?

Is there an afterlife?

There are so many ideas.

How can you KNOW the answer that is the TRUTH!!??

Why am I asking these questions?

We are confronted with them when death happens. We need to think through these questions and answers at a time other than at a funeral.

Death, the death of close people to us is constant. We are stunned, we think about it. We hope that there will be “something” in another dimension....when we will meet our loved ones and be reunited with them.

It is important to speak on it with authority, confidence and mostly HOPE ABOUT THE RESURECTION which means:

Steve Parker from Houston, Texas and I discuss the parable of the Prodigal Son, also called the Lost Son. Ken Murray and I discuss just a few of the 333 prophecies about Jesus Christ in the Old Testament.

70 of these O.T. prophecies were fulfilled in the last week of Christ's human life.

These prophecies are specific enough that the mathematical probability of Jesus fulfilling even a handful of them, let alone all of them, is staggeringly improbable—if not impossible.

Joseph Mughogho, who lives in Lilongwe, Malawi, has been our friend for about 11 years. He has served as an accountant for the United Church of God and is currently LifeNets Business Manager for northern Malawi. We have appreciated his professional and wise service to us all these years.

In April 2024, he and his wife were appointed as a couple to serve as Secretary General of the International Confederation of Christian Family Movements for Africa. He will hold this position for the next five years. The position is not full-time but will involve quite a considerable amount of travel to Zambia, Mozambique, Uganda, Cameroon, Nigeria among other places. He will continue doing his work for LifeNets.

As a couple, they consider it an honor to serve through Family movements. The induction was conducted on 27th April 2024 in Lilongwe. He asks for our continued prayers as they perform this task of strengthening families and marriages, vitally needed for Africa.

Today's episode features Tim Pebworth, United Church of God's Chairman of the Council of Elders and Director of French Speaking areas, who speaks on the subject of Conspiracies that so many, including devout Christians, can get caught up in.

A recent USA Today article quotes University of Chicago political science professors Eric Oliver and Thomas Wood as saying that in any given year, roughly half of Americans believe in at least one conspiracy theory. Given the pervasive nature of conspiracy theories, Tim Pebworth examines what the Bible says about conspiracy theories. He challenges us to think critically about what we hear and see, asking hard questions about the motivations and intentions of those who promote these alternative theories. The sermon looks at what the ancient prophet Isaiah says about conspiracy theories, the interesting linkage to the ancient and modern philosophy of Gnosticism and how to evaluate these theories in light of Biblical teachings.

My 17-year-old granddaughter, Elena Kubik, interviewed me for an 11th-grade assignment. I just loved the job that she did and would like to share this 14-minute interview with you.

Atul Gawande is a surgeon who explores the inevitable process of aging and ultimately death, and takes a critical look at how the medical profession does not yet have a firm grip on how to handle these processes well. He explores the birth of nursing homes, independent and assisted living facilities, and the various roles modern hospice programs can play to support those nearing the end of their lives. Gawande shares several stories of those who were adeptly aided through the process of growing frail as well as those were not so lucky. Finally, Gawande shares what he has learned about how each of us should approach our mortality as well as that of those we love.

We met a lot of passionate people with ministries ranging from anti-abortion to anti-pornography to preaching a strong warning and repentance messages to the American people. We met with Russian workers on the Gospel News Channel with a message to the Russian people in their language. I’d like to go back to an address I made to the General Conference of Elders of the United Church of God on May 2, 2020. This was to be our biggest conference yet, celebrating 25 years of the United Church of God’s existence. We planned for 80% of the ministry to come to Cincinnati, OH for the special event. As it turned out, this date was in the midst of the darkest days of COVID-19 pandemic. The in-person conference was canceled. I did speak to our ministry, but it was in an empty room with everyone listening online wherever they were in the world.

Our theme for Conference was Conviction, Commitment and Courage.

I chose to speak about Courage as it applied to our outlook on the world and how we need to face challenges in doing our Work, such as in the time of COVID which we were in and didn’t know how things would work out.

I was inspired to post this as a podcast because of a person who wrote to me how they found this message online and how it helped her face a current life’s trial.

So, here it is...going back to May 2, 2020 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

On Thursday July 13, 2023 Aaron and Michelle Dean and Bev and I were invited to the Church of God Seventh Day Conference held in Covington, Kentucky this year. About 1000 people were in attendance. We had dinner with Loren Stacy, President of the Church of God Seventh Day and his wife Karen as well as elder Mike Wallace.

This is my interview with Mike Wallace.

At the conference we had a wonderful evening reminiscing about our “recent” relationship going back 30 years when first visiting the COG7 Headquarters in Denver, CO and further back to the days when Herbert Armstrong fellowshipped with them. It was good to talk about their work in training ministers and leaders in their ARTIOS Christian College which has a well-developed training curriculum. We also talked about evangelism and working with Young Adults where they have been successful. COG7 has 200,000 members worldwide. Wonderful evening. At the evening worship service I met many people with whom we’ve had contact with over the years.

The Flood was more than an epic event. It communicated key messages in God's Plan of Salvation for a world without sin.

From Italy, a replay of a very popular podcast from October 2022 I spoke to a dear friend Paul Spenser who lives in Mjolby, Sweden. He is originally from the Isle of Man located in the Irish Sea between Ireland and England. We first met in 1995.

This podcast was recorded in Italy in October 2022 at United Church of God’s Fall Festival in Saubaudia about one hour north of Rome.

Through unfortunate circumstances in his life, Paul has become a single parent. He has three children who are growing now through their teen years. My wife Bev and I really enjoyed seeing them last year.

In this podcast he speaks about his life, his homeland the Isle of Man and about his life’s journey as an isolated Christian and tells us how he copes.

When Christ returns, will He find faith on the earth? The indication is that there will be little faith, if any.

But, in the midst of spiritual darkness, there are bright spots and I want to discuss one.

This is a story of believers in remote Zambia who came to believe and wished to be baptized. But, remoteness and other obstacles that I describe kept them waiting. They still met weekly, Through perseverance and patience along with setbacks, they prevailed. I was privileged to baptize them in April 2011 in Lusaka, Zambia.

Many ask me about Ukrainian Sabbath-keepers that I visited for the first time in Transcarpathia in 1992. This experience greatly widened my perspective on what God is doing with mankind. When Christ returns, He will marry His bride. Who is the Bride of Christ? Are you part of the body and bride that Christ will marry?

This episode recounts my first impressions of many visits. It's also a time warp going back more than 30 years to the Worldwide Church of God. This was recorded when I was Assistant Director of Church Administration for the Worldwide Church of God in Pasadena, California.

The USSR fell apart and formed 15 independent nations. One of those nations was Ukraine. When this happened, a remarkable development occurred in the world of faith which was a big surprise to us.

We discovered that there were thousands of people who worshipped God in a manner similar to ours. We found people who kept the Saturday Sabbath day, along with many other tenets of our faith that they drew out from the Bible itself.

It was a surprising revelation and revolution that we first found out about from a few of their immigrants to America in 1991. I first met with their leader and a group of 13 other who settled in Port St. Lucie, Florida. He told me an incredible story of faith and standing against the giants of oppression and atheism.

The leader, Michael Palchey, also told me that I should go to Ukraine myself and meet some of these people. There were more than 3000 of them in Ukraine, 4000 in Romania and 3000 in Moldova.

So indeed I did go to Ukraine in the fall of 1992 and want to share this adventure with you.

This journey opened my eyes to a greater reality of God’s working with people in this world.

Christ will return to this earth and will marry His bride (Ephesians 5) But, WHO will that bride be? Is it just us? Is it more than us? Who will be there and who will not?

What follows is my report to a congregation in Pasadena, CA about this adventure, how it came to be and its implications.

It reminds me of what some Christians have had to go through in biblical times to prove their faith.

All across the world, and increasingly in western nations, Christianity is facing heavy persecution. Voice of the Martyrs is an organization dedicated to assisting the persecuted in furthering the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the Kingdom of God in hostile nations.

In this interview Micah Gunn talks with Todd Nettleton about some of these persecuted people he's come in contact with, the concept of persecution in general, and what our takeaway should be as Christians who aren't currently facing heavy persecution.

While Christians persecuted in faraway nations might seem distant and disunified from us in western civilization, it doesn't have to be that way. We all might have different beliefs on doctrine, but they can still provide excellent examples of standing up for your faith when it's difficult. This is a lesson that all who claim to follow Christ will need to learn as the world at large turns more and more hostile towards any sort of Christianity.

My brother Oleh and I talk about our Ukrainian roots, our parents coming to American. He also volunteered for a year at the "Revival" Centre in Chernihiv 35 miles east of Chernobyl, In addition, he also spent a year with the Peace Corps in southwestern Ukraine. Finally, he has studied at a Lviv University right up to the time of the Russian invasion. He is continuing his studies online from where he is now living in Spokane, Washington. He has learned to speak Ukrainian and Russian. He has been interviewed on Ukrainian television as well as the press.

Colin talks about the living with the Ukrainian people and his life with them in their time of trial.

The journey started on their farm south of Tartu, through Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czechoslovakia and finally refuge in the American Zone of Germany. Hear a story of faith and Providence and what she learned and wants to tell you.

God called her and her husband once they providentially got to Iowa. What a story!

David Bensinger gives us insight into the mysterious and exotic nation of Myanmar. We talk about its history, its people, and our decades of work with the Church and their physical needs.

For years Myanmar hid itself from the world scene and has been in continual conlict and civil war since the British gave it its full independence in January.

For a few years there was pullback from this hermit-like approach and visitors from the West were welcome. Aaron and Michelle Dean visited in 2017. Natalia Teague (known to most as Natasha) formerly from Belarus in the USSR and I carry on a lively conversation. She is from Gomel, 70 miles from Chernobyl. She was there on April 26, 1986, when reactor number 4 blew up. She then continued to live for 15 more years in the area. She is currently the coordinator of Russian language publications at the United Church of God. The nation is still reeling from the senseless massacre of 19 children and two adults at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas on May 24, 2022. How does society react to such destructive actions? What should we all do in a society that allows such unimaginable atrocities that could happen anywhere? I talk to Union Township Police Chief Lieutenant Anthony Rees about the questions as we search for answers.
