Everyday we are inundated with thousands of messages promoting a way of doing business that is entrenched in toxicity. Are you as tired as I am of seeing the endless propping up of hustle culture and burnout as the only path to success? The marketing paradigms that are void of diversity, antiracism, and inclusion? The reliance on using harmful psychological triggers just to make a sale?! They want us to believe this is the only way it can be done; but I am here to tell you: that is 100% b@llsh*t! We don't need to buy into this deeply harmful and exhausting mythos of doing business. I have made it my goal in life to not only change the way I do business but to help others do the same: through community, sharing, and learning through powerful conversations.
Welcome to the Business as Activism Podcast.
We are going to unpack and uncover how doing business in our current paradigm is causing tremendous harm and perpetuating an unjust system. We are also going to discuss new and better ways to do business --ways that actually can result in bringing about healing and contribute to changing the world.
I'm your host, Elijah Selby, Feminist Business Coach and I passionately believe that by dismantling the systems of oppression that are built into current business practices we can 100% help to make the world a more just place. So many of us are unconscious of the harmful beliefs and practices we are perpetuating. Including me. Through these conversations a whole other world and way of doing things is going to open up for you.
My desire is that these conversations inspire you to do business differently so that together we can build a better workplace and a better world.
What if your business strategy included… tarot cards?
In this episode, JD Rose is back to show us how to bring a little magic into our marketing and leadership. From building a “tarot board of directors” to pulling spreads for business clarity, JD shares how the cards can unlock creativity, boost visibility, and keep you aligned with your vision.
This conversation was so much fun and I learned so much--I'm really excited for you to dive in!

What if tarot wasn’t about predicting the future, but about deeply understanding the present?
In this episode, I have a fun and informative conversation with financial well-being coach, JD Rose. She helps us explore tarot as a powerful tool for self-reflection and personal growth. We unpack the meaning of 2025’s card of the year—The Hermit—and what it invites us to explore collectively and individually.
From the historical roots of tarot to the theme of the “nines,” JD shares how the cards offer grounded guidance for navigating mental, emotional, and physical challenges. This conversation is an invitation to slow down, turn inward, and trust your inner wisdom.
BONUS! Thursday I'm dropping a short episode where JD teaches us some ways to use the tarot in our business! Keep your eyes out for that!

Today I have a crucial conversation with Dr. Dee Frayne to discuss the importance of values-based integrity, influence, and impact in leadership. Dee champions feminist leaders, helping them to embody their values, avoid burnout, and lead with compassion and integrity. She contrasts "power with" versus "power over" leadership--a model of power that is something still so rare in our culture, yet is so imperative in creating the just world we desire. Showing up in today's business landscape with integrity is more important than ever--Dee walks us through her three pillars of Integrity, Influence, and Impact to help guide us. We all want to know what to do with our work during these times and it is important to remember that sustainable change requires rest, joy, and mutual aid. Dee is here to guide leaders in creating a feminist future!
In this electrifying episode I welcome back the dynamic Dr. Dee Frayne—professional change-maker and disruptive leadership strategist. Together, we dive deep into the pressing need for feminist leaders to reclaim their power and influence in today's rapidly changing world.
As the backdrop of social inequality and systemic oppression grows louder, Dr. Dee shares her transformative framework, built on three essential pillars: values-based integrity, influence, and impact. She passionately articulates how aligning personal values with business practices can empower solopreneurs and change-makers to not only thrive but also catalyze meaningful change in their communities.
This conversation is a powerful reminder that now, more than ever, our work matters. Dee emphasizes the importance of embodying kindness, compassion, and joy as we navigate the often turbulent waters of activism. You are going to walk away feeling inspired and equipped with the tools to foster a collaborative and loving environment, both within yourself and your business practices.

I have pushed the unpause button (unpushed the pause button?) and hit play again! Happy New Year.
In this episode I let you know what's been going on for me in the past two years--long, dark, night of the soul stuff--and how I can feel I'm entering a season of rebirth. And it feels so freaking good.
I also reflect on Trump's first term and what this next term might mean for us. Related to all this, I share about a download I received (I'm letting my Woo Flag fly!) about bringing women together the weekend after the inauguration.
I have created the Resistance Retreat and I tell you a little bit about it but if you wish to know more, click the link below.
Sending you all so much love. I hope you are safe--mentally, physically, and emotionally. I'd love to hear from you (DM me on Insta)! I'm looking forward to bringing so much more in 2025 xo

Weeks ago, I invited Kari Morin and Lisa Callahan from The Things We Know podcast to join me for a conversation about misogyny, inspired by an episode they did on the topic. Our conversation was scheduled for Thursday, November 7th, two days after the election. We knew misogyny would still be around – but we hoped we’d be celebrating a breakthrough, perhaps even the election of our nation’s first female president, and a woman of color at that! Alas, as you know, that was not the case.
We came to the call with grief, sadness, anger, and fear. We don’t have all the answers right now. But we know this: COMING TOGETHER matters. Join us for this candid conversation as we grapple with the why and the how of it all and try to find hope and connection amidst the uncertainty.

Entrepreneurship gives freedom and opportunity to so many people. As women, moms, neurodivergents, people who can't do a traditional 9 - 5 job, creatives, and anyone who doesn't fit the cookie cutter mold, entrepreneurship offers us so much potential.
AND--entrepreneurship affects our mental health in specific ways that "regular" jobs don't.
And yet--we all fall prey to the glamorized stories of success, laying on the beach sipping cocktails while the money rolls in...and so we hide the stress, anxiety and depression and shame ourselves for having those feelings because we have to be Leaders and Experts and present a face of joy and confidence and Success.
We can really do a number on ourselves.
But Shulamit is passionate about mitigating the entrepreneurial mental health crisis. She knows that she can preserve your peace of mind as you ride the emotional rollercoaster of running a business. There's such an incredible relief in simply admitting this shit is HARD!
Talking about our mental health is a powerful way for us to do business differently--discussing mental heal is absolutely a form of activism! I'm so excited for you to listen to this episode!

I'm pretty sure you're going to agree that Megan is AWESOME. And yes, she seriously walks us through HOW to use story in marketing and why that is effective--more so than any other guest I've had on the podcast. Thank you, Megan!
But we also talk about soooooo many other juicy things. We dig into the thing we see often--people talking about income in order to sell their programs. We look at Motherhood and Being a Business Owner and patriarchal messaging we get around that. And we continue the conversation I love to have with everyone--how we actually mimic (and therefore reinforce) the patriarchy and other systems of injustice! Ugh. We don't know we are doing it because we know what we know and we don't know what we don't know--BUT YOU ARE HERE LEARNING WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW AND THAT IS SO FREAKING AWESOME AND I LOVE YOU! On paper, Beth Knight was incredibly successful. She was an ex-pat living in London, working a tech job, and making excellent money. Her job and income gave her prestige. It really was the kind of life that our culture tells us is exactly the life we should all strive for and that will make us HAPPY! Success! Money! Instead...in her own words, "I was dying inside. I just hated myself."
When COVID hit, she was forced to sit still for the first time in her life--and the self-reflection that came with that changed everything. She enrolled in coaching programs and got into therapy. A graduate from art school, Beth picked up her brushes and paint and started to paint the truth of who she is.
It started with a painting of her crying--not just any crying, but the deep deep crying of a breakdown. She shared it on instagram--a place that she had always used to show people how busy she was and all the cool things she was doing. This was her, raw, and vulnerable. And people loved it. And that opened a door for her to walk through as she continued her personal journey. I can't wait for you to listen to this episode and hear the rest of her incredible story!!

This is an important conversation for all of us to hear because it encompasses making change at the governmental level.
Before I get to the summary I want to celebrate and acknowledge that this is the FIRST MAN I've interviewed for the podcast! Yay! Sie is amazing and wonderful and I love him and I hope you do, too!
Sie works in the nonprofit world in the Bay Area, and he is currently working transitional youth to get them housed (you may know that affordable housing in the Bay Area is a huge problem.)
In this important conversation, we discuss the challenges faced by marginalized communities, particularly transitional age youth and young adults, in accessing healthcare and other essential resources. Sie shows us the need for more inclusive and culturally sensitive approaches to healthcare, and the importance of involving marginalized communities in decision-making processes to avoid perpetuating systems of oppression. Sie highlights the systemic obstacles faced by these young adults, including housing and self-sufficiency challenges, burnout, and the need for a holistic approach that considers the broader social and economic factors impacting their lives.

When you think of care workers what comes to mind? For me, I imagined nurses, nurses aids, home healthcare workers, hospice workers...so when Allison told me the care workers she started working with was MOTHERS I had to truly reflect on my own biases! And yet, in some ways, mothers are the ultimate care workers. In this conversation Allison unfolds her journey as a care worker (social worker and therapist) working with other care workers and the patterns that became clear to her through this work--and how that lead her to incorporate CARE and a LEADERSHIP practice. Allison shines such a clear light on this topic--a topic that is woven through with patriarchal, capitalist, and white supremacy culture beliefs and norms.
We discuss:
•Care work as a valuable leadership practice.
•Care work, patriarchy, and resistance.
•Trauma-informed care and coaching for therapists and other care professionals.
•Weaponizing care skills in oppressive systems.
•Matriarchal vs patriarchal business values and their impact on leadership, growth, and sustainability.

This is an incredible conversation with Global Fund for Women's Everyday Feminist Fellow. From working to prevent child sexual exploitation in Thailand with the Freedom Story to coordinating global, capacity-building workshops with the Nike Foundation, Shannon’s career has been driven by the power of brand to create social change. Shannon has a wide scope of experience and knowledge and she shares so much of it with us. We dive into how she started doing that work--how she kept saying YES to invitations that took her down so many roads. We also dive into the nonprofit world in general and how, despite truly good intentions, that world unintentionally mimics harmful patriarchal norms--norms that had Shannon end up in the ER at one point.
Shannon is so open and so generous--you're going to be as entranced with her story and her experiences as I am. I can't wait for you to listen!

"I love talking about rich artists!" That's what Jillian Todd wrote on the her google form to be on the podcast and I instantly knew I had to talk to this woman!!! The cultural narratives we hear greatly affect us--and most often they are holding us down and holding us back. In this episode we talk about:
•Breaking the stigma of artists being "starving" and finding financial stability through creative careers.
•Generosity, self-love, and harm reduction in activism.
•The binary of "starving artist" vs. "luxury VIP" and finding a balance. •Investing in art, finding local artists, and making money through various means.
•Defining success for creative entrepreneurs, with a focus on financial stability and making a living while honoring values.
And so much more!! I am so excited for you to hear this conversation. Please subscribe, review, and share--I need a village to get the word out there! Thank you.

As mere normal, non-theatrical humans, we don't generally get up on stage and create art that inspires people to see the world differently...oh wait...I forgot about social media! Scratch that! We are all performing our art! Melissa Kelley is a total badass. She is an activist in word, deed, and art. This conversation went deep, people! All of us gain something listening to Melissa's wisdom as we bring our work to the world.
We dive into
•Gender identity, trauma, societal expectations and healing through performance art
•Confronting societal expectations and living authentically •Impact, power, and fear in entrepreneurship and activism
•Facing fears, sharing personal stories, and being responsible with narratives
•Communication, vulnerability, and art with a focus on integrity and safety

This is the first episode in an ongoing series on boundaries. Boundaries are foundational to our joy, freedom, mental and physical health, healthy relationships, and a successful business that is also joyful!
Boundaries are one of the most important things I work with my clients on. And because women have been told that "If you take care of yourself, other people suffer," boundaries are something we are not taught. And they are something that we tend to avoid at all costs.
Owning who we are and what we want is daunting in a world that tells us to know who other people are and what they want.
When we don't set boundaries resentment has fertile ground to grow. That's why learning how to set boundaries is so crucial.
You are not alone in struggling with when and how to set boundaries! It's a process--but one of the most worthy journeys you'll take. So join me today as I chat with Karen Falzone--a client, friend, super successful busines woman, and all around incredible human. You will LOVE her insights, I promise.

If you want to stop hiding out and start powerfully showing up for your business then it is so important to unover what's holding you back and then create a new way to PLAY!
There's a lot of reasons we hide out but one of the biggest one's I've found is because we are given some really fucked up messaging in our patriarchal society around marketing.
In this episode I share how I started my business and the internal road blocks I ran into when trying to market and launch! It took me a bit to figure out what was stopping me but THANK GOODNESS I eventually got there!
I dive into the lightbulb that went off and changed everything--including how it lead to me starting this podcast!
I walk you through three Patriarchal Marketing Messages that are most likelty holding you back:
•The Myth of Perfectionism
•The belief that in order to make the sale, we need to MANIPULATE
•The idea that in order ot market your business successfully you need false urgency, manipulative pricing, gouging people with payment plans, false scarcity, and exaggerated claims of success.
I give you journal prompts for each of these so that you can start unpacking and dismantling your internalized patriarchy today! Yay!
At the end of the podcast, if you're interested, I let you know about a gathering I'm holding this Thursday, April 11th. If it resonates, please join (I will be sending out a recording!)

Aaaaaahhhh....getting our photos taken. Do I hear a collective groan? I do know a couple people who don't get stressed at the idea of a photo shoot (or simply having a friend snap a photo on their phone!) but most people I know get anxiety at the thought. Photographer, Éadaoin Curtin, recognized that her clients were stressed out and decided to do something about it. Éadaoin's goal is to empower her clients throughout the process. I think getting our photos taken has a special place in the Patriarchy--it can truly bring up ALL OUR STUFF. The impact of the Male Gaze in our culture cannot be understated. Éadaoin helps women challenge beauty standards and lean into self-acceptance--a radical act if ever there was one.

When Amy Guerrero reached sent me the google form for "potential podcast guests" she wrote, "I am passionate AF about this work, and look forward to connecting and supporting your audience." Amy shares her with so much openness and generosity.

Come say hello!
In this inspiring episode I sit down with Laura Hartley and we discuss Remaking the World. You know...just dismantling all the BS and creating a more just and free world. All of us change makers are living in two places--we have one foot in the current world, run my patriarchy, capitalism, white supremacy, racism and other systems of inequity, and we have one foot in the world we are creating--one that we are bringing to life through our thoughts, actions, conversations, activism, and work. One world is collapsing and the other is coming to life. I can't wait for you to listen in to this super rich, enlightening, and inspiring conversation. You're going to walk away with hope and also feeling EMPOWERED to make a difference!! Yay!

Come say hi!!
Capitalism is geared against most of us, though here we are working within this system. How do we find a way to be in this system that is not exploitative? How do we find a way to be in the system that does actually help us to find some power-- when power is in this system expressed through money and that can be so problematic!" That's basically how Natalie opens up this seriously badass conversation about money, gender, power, and privilege.
In this episode we talk about:
Money and gender
Money and power
What it means to be extractive and how not to be!
How can we feel good about making money?
Why do so many women get stuck at earning "just enough"
Ways to be generous!
How to think about scaled pricing--should you or shouldn't you do this?

Hello loves. Welcome to the first podcast of 2024. And therein lies the seed of this episode--why is this the first episode? And what are my feelings about that? (Spoiler alert--wasn't very happy about it.) But the beautiful gift this situation brought me was that I sat in powerful reflection of who I am and what I stand for. I leaned into Business as Activism. In this episode I'll share the journey with you, and I believe you'll be inspired--at least that is my hope. Changing the world is happening in real time. Recording this episode felt like a true embodiment of some of the changes I'd like to see for this world. Thank you for being here. I'm so grateful.
In this last episode of 2023 I have one of the most important conversations I've had--a conversation about the Israel Gaza War. As I reveal in the episode, this is not the conversation I imagined having with the incredible Andréa Ranae. But when she showed up in the Zoom room that day I could feel that everything was going to the wayside--what was present for her was the war and I knew if I was going to have this conversation with anyone, Andréa was the person I'd choose to have it with. In our conversation we talk about:
Andréa Ranae is devoted to inspiring her community to embrace our world’s greatest challenges from the inside out. Please listen with love and share with anyone you think may crave to hear a conversation like this one.

Breaking Free From the Matrix of the PR World and Embracing Authenticity
At one point in her career, author and coach Helen Jane Campbell was pulled into a room (along with the other women in the firm) and told what kind of underwear they should wear underneath their work clothes. That somebody ever thought that it was okay to dictate women what kind of underwear they should wear is jaw-dropping but it also is exemplary of the Patriarchy in the workplace...and life, really. It may be jaw-dropping, but you know what? We women participate in this dictatorship or how we should look and what we should wear every day. We don't necessarily even understand that we are doing that until someone lifts the veil for us. Well, we are lifting the veil! Helen shares her remarkable journey with us from working in PR, buying the right handbags, having the right haircut, and doing all she could to fit it, to BREAKING FREE of that and discovering her true authentic self. She has two decades of PR experience that she brings to the table and applies that knowledge in a disruptive way to help change the narrative! It's so compelling and really exciting! I can't wait for you to listen!

Sarah Zero left corporate America to start her own business doing branding work for entrepreneurs whose work create positive impact on the world--she went solo and discovered how LONELY that was. So many of us can relate. Even if we are not solopreneurs--finding and building community as an adult can feel daunting. Feeling alone can feel like the norm. After attending networking meetings that never felt rewarding or satisfying she decided to create the kind of networking she desired--networking that actually was COMMUNITY. Sarah shares with us what she learned and how she's set things up in powerfully unique ways and what the results have been. It's everything we crave and more.

The way we lead makes a difference. Leadership can be Activism, just as Business can be Activism! Brooke Hofsess takes us on her own journey to leadership.
In this episode, she shares five leadership paradoxes that invite you into your fullest expression (while also disrupting the status quo):
Insecurity and trust;
Competition and community;
Self-reliance and sharing the load;
Fear of chaos and flow;
Gatekeeping and generatively.
You're going to leave feeling empowered and inspired.

"Speak human, win the internet" is Lara Eastburn's tagline--so I'm sure you can tell right away that she's totally awesome. She started learning about internet ads for her hoola hoop business when advertising online was still in the "bunny slope" era! And she found out rather quickly that she 1) loved it and 2) was totally good at it! I don't know about you, but advertising on FB or IG or any other platform has always felt pretty overwhelming. Lara is so good at her job AND she does things really differently (which is what we are interested in here at Business as Activism, right?!) You're going to learn so much and FEEL INSPIRED!! Remember--the way we do business matters. Please share this podcast with someone you love!

“A culture fixated on female thinness is not an obsession about female beauty, but an obsession about female obedience. Dieting is the most potent political sedative in women’s history; a quietly mad population is a tractable one.”― Naomi Wolf. No wonder women are in a constant argument with our bodies. No wonder we are disconnected from our bodies--and we see them as "other." And yet, the relationship with our bodies is the most important relationship we have. Nina Manolson brings so much love, compassion, wisdom, and soul to the conversation we are having with and around our bodies. What becomes possible when we feel Body Peace? What become possible when we set ourselves free from the chains of patriarchal beauty norms? If you're like me, it is actually hard to imagine. But for certain this conversation is crucial to our wellbeing. I cannot wait to hear what you think of this profound episode.

Success is right around the corner if you buy the right course, right? There's just one piece of information you're missing...and when you read the marketing copy for that course you're CERTAIN that this will be THE THING that makes is all happen.
How many courses have you bought? $2k here, $3k there...it sure adds up, doesn't it? I know I've spent multiple thousands of dollars on courses that I have not used, not finished, or did not deliver. Deanna Seymour was an art teacher looking to start a side hustle to bring some extra money into her family of four. Like so many of us, she googled her way into the online business world, discovering so many celebrity entrepreneurs...and before long she had the feeling of, "Yeah, I can do that--I can be a bazillionaire and run my business from the beach." How many of us have had a similar thought? Deanna opens up to take us on this journey of investing big sums and not getting the desired results; of being convinced by the marketing and then discovering the program really didn't deliver. As a result she created a course called, STOP BUYING COURSES to help people understand marketing and how it is designed to make you feel so you can make empowered decisions. Deanna is AMAZING. OMG, you're going to love her. Truly.

I've had many conversations with people recently where it became clear that I take a lot of my knowledge for granted--and that I assume everyone else knows what I know. NOPE! Not true. So I created this episode to share some foundational beliefs I have when it comes to creating change in this world. I am calling you all in to cozy up so I can walk you through things--how the Paradigms of the Patriarchy operate in our lives, how we change them, and some core paradigms that we can look at in our own businesses and lives to start shifting--small shifts that will make big changes. Because we all have a lot going on, don't we? So what I want you to know is that you don't need to massively overhaul our judicial system in order to create change (however if that is something you can do, yes please!) I remind us all that small hinges swing big doors and then I share some of those small hinges you can start swinging!!

"We must shift America from a needs, to a desires culture. People must be trained to desire, to want new things even before the old had been entirely consumed. We must shape a new mentality in America. Man's desires must overshadow his needs." - Paul Mazor, Lehman Brothers (post WWI era). Chelsea Quint talks to us today about how that vision became a reality, and how we are manipulated by the modern day marketing machine. I know we've talked a lot about marketing on this podcast (and we are sure to do it again), however this conversation uncovers WHY and HOW we got here. Prior to Mazor's declaration, things were advertised for their FUNCTION. The, Edward Bernays, Sigmund Freud's nephew, took up the mantle and created numerous ways of advertising that created DESIRE. If we are going to be free from the manipulative shackles of consumerism, we have to first understand how we are being manipulated! Please share this episode with someone and help spread the word!

We pull back the curtain on the financial industry on this one! The financial world uses language and jargon that purposely acts as a gatekeeper of knowledge so that only a select few are able to navigate these waters. Maura Madden, Certified Financial Planner witnessed this for years before she decided to start her own firm, with the aim of supporting people to truly understand and take hold of their finances in ways that make sense for their lives (among other things--Maura is very talented!) There's reasons women often feel that finances are either something they are not good at, or something that other people should deal with...and yet, we disempower ourselves when we buy into that. Pull up a chair and take notes!

"...It was a massive realization to me actually quite recently, that my idea of success was not my own...and that...story was running through my head, was holding me back from truly enjoying, and defining for myself, what success and joy in my career was, could be what the possibilities are." MIC DROP!! This episode is really special and different. As humans, we learn through storytelling--I told Dana I really wanted to start sharing people's stories because I think when we hear about other people's journeys it can be elucidating and it can actually feel supportive of our own journeys. Dana truly shares her soul with us. I was captivated by her story of traditional success to embracing her own definitions of success--one that allows for evolution and growth. Why has there been over 525 anti LGBTQ+ laws introduced in this country in 2023? This is absolutely by design. It has become what is called a "wedge issue" by the Republican party and it has been successful in bringing back the "traditional family" narrative stronger than ever. This is, of course, by design. The fact is, democracy is under attack and authoritarianism is on the rise. I frame what's happening looking through the systemic lens. I also talk about what we can do!

With so many proposed and passed laws on trans and LGBTQ+ people, and the fact that it is Pride Month, I wanted to bring this interview with Femily, Silicon Valley's Gender and Equity Advisor, front and center once more. Our conversation goes both deep and wide. The workplace is not working for women and people with marginalized identities, and we look under the lid of what's going on there. Femily also shares her wisdom on why people shy away from conversation on race, gender, and identity. Femily lets us know that actually, most people with dominant identities WANT to work in places that are more flexible--so what does allyship look like in the corporate work space?

Are you struggling to ""put yourself out there"" and build your business? Yeah. I get it. I've sooooooo been there. All my clients have been there. It's normal. It's normal because how we've been taught to market makes us feel skeevy. I've literally had clients tell me, ""I'd rather not have a business than to have to market it."" In today's episode I break down 5 lessons to help you get clear on why things feel bad, and how to start feeling good about marketing! We'll talk about:

This story has a very happy ending but it begins with, "I wrote Manstruation because I was so furious at men, I was so full of rage, I was so full of righteous, feminine anger, after years of building The Agenda Period, consistently interfacing with decision makers who had never had periods..."
Alyx Coble-Frakes continually ran into ignorance, sexism, paternalism and much more as she pitched her business to venture capitalists. After a particularly horrible conversation in which she was told, "...I think that your case may be easier if you had some men who could be in the arena with you as allies, but we just don't know what to do. So maybe you could make a blog, maybe you could lead a discussion. Maybe you could have some kind of forum to support the good, well intentioned men who would be great allies for your cause," Alyx turned her frustration into fuel and wrote, "Manstruation: A Field Guide to Not Sucking When Someone Around You Has Their Period (and How You Can Be Supportive in Every Other Phase as Well) The result? Through the process, "I really stopped being so angry with men and that was beautiful." I can't wait for you to hear this incredible story!

Y'all!!! Money is a THING. Money is fraught with need, desire, lack, judgment, confusion...and so much more. Dr. Morgana and I hopped on a call to talk about the Yin and Yang of money and (per usual) ended up talking about sooooo much more. We get into her personal money journey, what the yin and yang of money is and how it can help us with our relationship to money, and why people telling you how to manifest money usually doesn't work (point clarified using a little story of a sexcapade and Princess Anne.) Y'all! Have you ever wondered how people become Influencers??? Well this conversation is going to give you insight to that world. Jennifer Jackson was about to sign the lease on a yoga studio right as COVID hit--and presto, it was time to pivot! Jennifer started working for an agency doing copy writing, and as they say, the rest was history. She started working for bigger agencies and ended up working with Influencers. BUT--SHE STOPPED. Why? Because, like so many of us she did not feel good about the tactics that were used in order to "influence." So she left to create her own company helping people create influence without all the BS patriarchal marketing tactics. Yes, IT IS POSSIBLE and she's going to share some inside scoop on how to get started.

"The feminist future is a society of culture, and a practice of radical love, acceptance and belonging. It's a society, a culture and practice that's optimized for joy, and thriving, for flourishment of all people in the planet. It honors the individual uniqueness, and an inherent worthiness of each and every member of the society, while strengthening the collective." Dr. Dee Frayne. That's a quote from this episode and really, I feel like that's a mic drop! Dee has incredible insight and knowledge not only about our feminist future, but about a post-capitalism culture as well. There is a very concrete reason why contracts and legal paperwork can feel confusing and overwhelming. The legal profession is built on patriarchal ideas. As my guest, Jacqueline Horani says, "I want people to understand how our existing system is built by white men trying to hoard, gather, extract, exploit wealth, property, and maintain that position and that privilege at the expense of everyone else. And that is the history of our legal system." The way she approaches creating a contract feels truly revolutionary to me and I think you'll agree. I was struck by how obvious her perspective and solutions are yet how I had never considered them! And that's what is amazing about each of us doing our work in the world--we help others imagine something different, better, more just. Enjoy!

If you'd enjoy a birds eye view of how systems of oppression and harm show up in traditional business, than this is the episode for you. Jessica Lackey, Strategy Advisor and Fractional CEO, was trained in the bluest blood of traditional business: McKinsey, Harvard Business School, and 7 years at Nike. She was a poster child for Successful Woman in Business. However, that did not safeguard her from a massive breakdown ("...I basically had a mental breakdown in my white boss's office...that went as well as you can imagine...") Ultimately that breakdown lead to the clarity that she needed to rebuild her life. Thankfully her trajectory lead her to the feminist business world. "And that's when I started to understand I didn't have language before I left because where would I have learned about capitalism and patriarchy, and the perils of unchecked growth? Where would I have learned that?" Jessica's story, insights, and brilliance will captivate you. I can't wait for you to listen!

Buckle your seatbelt! If you like controversial hot takes about social media, sex work, mental health and feminism, this episode is for you! I’m joined by Angela Morris, Social Media Strategist, to talk about the origins of social media platforms founded and run by cis, white, het men… AND how they are built upon the unpaid labor of women who those same platforms ultimately censor and shadow-ban. We discuss sex workers’ influence on the popularity of social media itself, and the parallels between them and feminist entrepreneurs marketing their businesses on social media (turns out we’re not so different in the eyes of Mark Zuckerberg). Angela’s passion for helping women and queer folks to reclaim their time, energy and mental health from the pitfalls of social media has led her to create a program called Quiet Quitting Instagram. Doing the work of dismantling the Patriarchy and all the other systems of oppression that are inherent in our society takes work--and that work never ends, really. There's just a lot to learn and understand and undo. Emily Roh, Antiracist Coach and Facilitator, does a beautiful job of walking us through the intrapersonal journey and the interpersonal journey. Of course we cannot possibly cover allllllll the things in one conversation, however there's a lot of us to learn and reflect on in this episode!

February 1st begins Black History Month and Ro Nwosu and I jump right in to what that means for Black business owners. We talk about performative vs. genuine lifting up of Black voices and business. Ro shares her experience and insight on being a Black women in business, expectations, the importance of respecting people's time and energy, and what good partnerships look like (hint--they don't just partner up for one month a year). We dive into cultural messaging and how it is spread...and how the simple question of, "How can I help?" can make a huge difference. How you speak to people matters. And really---soooooooo much more. Ro is so generous and we could have talked for days.

Discussions around disability tend to be muted and even silenced, which is why this episode is SO CRUCIAL to listen to. Melinda Martin is an inclusive brand strategist leading entrepreneurs to set the standard of disability inclusion in their industries. Melinda is really incredible and you're going to love her as much as I do. As she says in the conversation, "..we [need to] get really loud about...disability inclusion, which is representation as well as accessibility within your business experience." As a disabled person herself, Melinda has knowledge and compassion to guide us through this important conversation. I know that the knowledge in this episode is pivotal to all of us expanding our understanding of inclusion and disabilities in general. I'm so glad you're listening!

Whew! We talk about alllllll the things in this conversation! But the topic that is woven through the entirety is White Supremacy. Growing up, White Supremacy meant skinheads, extreme hate groups, Nazis...but the term means something different now. What exactly is White Supremacy and how is it showing up? How are we participating in it? How do we unravel it? Erin-Kate Escobar (they/them) is a DEI and anti-racist strategist and points out that when we engage in practices that center dominant norms we are often reinforcing the patriarchy and all the systems of oppression and harm that we are living in and under. This episode is going to expand your understanding on so many important topics. Thank you for being here, for learning, for sharing, and for making the world a better place!

How does Patriarchy and dominant culture affect our understanding of time? Think: Hustle Culture, the need to stay busy, the push for productivity...these are all things we take for granted and at least a part of us feels that they are TRUE--especially when it comes to the need to be productive. Ixchel walks us through what decolonization is and how it applies to our concept of time. She unpacks the connection of time, space, and land and how that has us see time differently. We are walked through how European colonialism and culture has affected our view of time and how it is wreaking havoc for us! The idea of Power Over is what is woven into the fabric of our lives. It is what is modeled for us, and for most of us, it is a given that power equates with some level of harm and subjugation. It feels like that is the definition of power--irrefutable. However, there are other ways to practice power, namely Power With. How have patriarchal norms influenced and affected how we lead? Leadership Specialist, Sile Walsh, points out that often when people think of Patriarchy they automatically split genders when the reality is that it is harmful to everyone. In the workplace it can look like harm by a top down power hierarchy, the need from external validation that bypasses inherent or intuitive decision making, and an emphasis on profit and exponential growth rather than a sense of purpose and fulfillment. As a result, our definition of a successful leader is absolutely limited by the system. We really go deep into roadblocks for good leadership, the difference between diversity and inclusion through an anti-oppressive lens, how we bring our unknown biases to our efforts to build inclusion, and so so so much more. The term "Girl Boss" was intended as a term of empowerment, and certainly at its inception, many women felt emboldened by it. However as the movement grew, and became more mainstream, the feminist ethos of it seem to have faded away, leaving the focus on individual wealth and success. My guest, Jess Khouri, examines the phenomenon of the Girl Boss and discusses how we can create a feminist business that truly makes a real impact and creates social change.

Holy cannoli, people! Joanna Lindenbaum is one of my mentors and I am so excited to bring this conversation about POWER to you all. Joanna is the creator of the Applied Depth Practitioner Institute & the Sacred Depths Transformational Practitioner Certification. We dive into power and look at how our culture is not set up and hasn't created messaging to show a healthy model of power. The current model we have is power OVER. This kind of power is oppressive and subjugates those who don't hold power. But there are other ways to hold power--power with. This is one of the most important conversations of our time, I believe. When we think about doing business in a way that creates change, we cannot disregard how we use our power.

After retiring as a dancer, Somatic Compassion Coach Amy Kubanek realized that performance wasn’t kept just for the stage - it was in every area of her life. Society demands that we perform to impossible standards - moving the goalposts as we achieve, so that no matter how great we are, and how much we do, we are always reaching, always anxious, always worried someone will see behind the curtains. In her work now, she moves to radicalize each individual she comes across, with the simple idea of giving yourself permission to exist.

If you’re in online business, you probably recognize all of these as tools of the trade. But does it have to be this way? Dr. Morgana is a powerful woman with an incredible story, and so much insight to share, that we couldn’t fit it all into one podcast. In this conversation, Elijah and Dr. Morgana dive into the normalization of toxic positivity, how that is weaponized inside marketing and online business, and how those same toxic ideas echo through our society, reverberating through our relationships and self-identity. Once a stripper, and now a mother, and an author-to-be with a doctorate in Intersectional Feminism, Dr. Morgana will blow your mind as she pulls back the curtain on how our reality and identity are co-created with relationships, social constructs, and most importantly, our love for ourselves.

Take a moment to hop off the hamster wheel, and listen to a brilliant JEDI activist blow your mind as she reveals the insidious ways that colonialism has seeped into every part of our lives (including how we keep track of and value time). Slow down with Elijah and Ixchell, as they navigate the possibilities of the culture and world we could have.

I want you to question things. This is how we begin.
With a pinch of humor, a spot of game theory, and a metric ton of feminism, CV Harquail asks the question “What is a business?” and then takes it ten steps further by asking us “What could a business be?”. As an author, management scholar, consultant, writer and toolmaker, CV is no stranger to speaking her mind and fucking with the system. If you’re ready to take your feminist business, and start REALLY shifting the foundations of society - this episode is for you.

Instead of a free car, you get a podcast episode with Feminist entrepreneur and CEO of The Feminine Rising, Elijah Shannon Selby diving into the concept of “baking justice into business” with Kelly Diels, the Feminist Marketing Consultant who helps feminist entrepreneurs sell without selling out. In this conversation, they discuss how injustice is already present not only in our businesses, but in the assumptions we make and the beliefs we hold about what we can do to make change. Elijah and Kelly grapple with the ideals and struggles of feminism, and offer insight into what power we already have to stand up and make some real change (without needing the funds to give everyone in our audience a car).

Welcome to the Business as Activism Podcast where we are going to uncover all the effed up ways we’ve been doing business.
We’re going to look at how doing business in the current paradigm is causing harm and perpetuating a system that is unjust. And we are going to get excited about new and better ways to do business that actually bring about healing and contribute to changing the world.
I’m your host, Elijah Selby, Feminist Business Coach and I passionately believe that how we do business makes a difference and is one of the most powerful ways we can start to dismantle current paradigms of harm and work towards a more just world. I’m here to learn as much as you are and am so excited to dig into these conversations with world-changers.
I hope you take away new understandings and inspiration for doing your business differently--and that you understand that Business is Activism!
