A podcast about friendship. Friendshipable--having the power, skill, means, or opportunity to have the emotions or conduct of friends or to create the state of being friends. Hosted by Terri + Manya (co-founders of Project BFF) and containing conversations about friends, friendships, and friendship-adjacent topics, with occasional interviews or solo episodes in the mix.
Is it possible to have a friend that you've never met in real life? In our modern times the answer is: definitely.
We can keep in touch virtually. Video calls, texting, keeping tabs on social media. Meeting in real life absolutely has its advantages. But it isn't the only way we can build friendships. You can build connection virtually, though it is different than in person. It requires trust and setting boundaries.

How comfortable are you with yourself?
That makes a difference in how you show up, for yourself and your friends. When you know and care for yourself you don't need to take what others say or do personally. And you can understand where your friend is coming from--and that it isn't about you. We project a lot onto other people (in some ways, your relationship with a friend is only in your own head), but when we know and understand who our friends are, there is nothing to take personally.

Have you ever considered the power of mentoring in catapulting leaders to all-star status? Beyond just being a guiding hand, it can be a powerful tool in fostering authentic leadership and team development.
In this episode, we talk about the essence of female mentorship and why it is crucial in today's professional landscape. With our guest, Sharlee Lyons, we explore how mentoring goes beyond traditional roles, shifting from being the "sage on the stage" to a "guide on the side." It's not solely about age or experience; rather, mentoring is also about having someone who will advocate for you even when you're not in the room. And we know that asking someone to be your mentor can be uncomfortable, yet the value that stems from these relationships is immeasurable.
Sharlee Lyons is a dynamic leader with a background in athletics and leadership development. Her book, "Average to All-Star," reflects her passion for helping individuals reach their full potential. As a former Division 1 athlete, she understands the dedication and resilience required to excel. From Project BFF HQ, Terri + Manya riff on the concept of a friendship recession--the "slow then sudden creep of people self-reporting that they have no close friends."

We talk about the factors that have led to the decline, as discussed by Kimberley Wilson, including increase in people moving to search for work or the challenges of a dicey urban rental market and the increased cost of living.
There are factors outside of our control, of course. But there are things we can control when it comes to friendships, like re-galvanizing old friendships, investing time to build new ones, and remembering that making friends takes time.

From Project BFF HQ, Terri + Manya riff on how our friendships change. As kids, we are thrown together at school, and in other ways that mean our friends are an intimate part of our daily lives for most of us. As we get older, and especially as we move on after school, the nature of our friendships can change.
Factors that influence our friendships in adulthood include life stages and tasks (like finding a career or having kids). We also tend to be so busy that many of us focus on maintaining friends versus specifically making new friends. And as adults, we are much more likely to have friends in different age groups, which can be an interesting way to learn new things and for some of us, get out of our comfort zone

What is a best friend? Can you have more than one?

We'll be back with new episodes on January 6. Please enjoy this favorite episode from Season 2 in 2022.
It is human to be aggressive, no matter the gender, but that doesn't mean it's any fun to be on the receiving end of that aggression. This can come from friends, friends of friends, and colleagues. The aim of the person doing the bullying is to make someone look bad. That can take the form of cyberbullying, gossiping, intimidation, or ostracizing. We also talk about some workplace bullying that we've been on the receiving end of.
"The same attributes that allow girls to be socially intelligent also allow them to be aggressive. They are drawing from the same skill set." - Rachel Simmons
Sometimes these bullying experiences happen in front of others, who may themselves be afraid to step up out of fear of becoming the next victim.
Some ways to deal, though it does not always feel simple. The key is to recognize what you cannot control in the encounter.

From Project BFF HQ, Terri and Manya talk about how sometimes we may be a bad friend. (Not a bad art friend, just a regular bad friend?)
Are you a pretty good friend if you are thinking "Is what I'm doing making me a bad friend"? What to do with the fear that you've done something wrong as a friend? How the pandemic has revealed how important friendships are and enabled us to have more grace towards our friends (and towards ourselves in our friendships). Each of us is so many things to so many different people and the big picture is that we are all trying.

They are different types of relationships and serve different purposes in a lot of our lives. The key to a meaningful and supportive relationship, family or friends, is the quality of the relationship.
Family is related to you no matter the circumstances, and friendships can wane--someone might not always be a friend. And both types of people in our lives can be kind, loving, and supportive.

How do we define a friend? Some people consider kin as friends, while others do not. Some use the label only for long-lasting, close relationships, while others use it more liberally to define almost anyone they've met. And it can change over time with the same people.

From Project BFF HQ, Terri and Manya riff on managing financial disparities in friendships.
Whether you are the one with more money in your bank account, or the one with less, there can be some challenges in navigating friendships.
Americans don't like to talk about finances with their friends. But when not out in the open, disparities in income (or disposable income) can crop up and inconvenient times among friends--like getting the bill at a restaurant or planning a vacation together.

From Project BFF HQ, Terri + Manya riff about the power of female friendships and how it appears that women are genetically wired for friendships in a different way than men.
According to a UCLA study, women were genetically wired to befriend and tend to people in times of stress, while men were more likely to exhibit a fight or flight response. And across their entire life cycle, females are more likely to mobilize social support in times of stress--they seek it out more, receive more support, and are more satisfied with the support they receive.

From Project BFF HQ, Terri + Manya riff about the science behind friend relationships.
Why are we friends with the people we are friends with? What causes that "click" when you know it's right?
Scientists have done a study (of course) that shows that friends have "remarkably similar" patterns of activity in their brains. Based on that connection, scientists we actually able to predict the strength of two people's bond based on their brain scans.
We also discuss the "rules of friendship," thanks to Oxford psychologists, Michael Argyle, and Monika Henderson wrote a paper on the topic in the 1980s.

From Project BFF HQ, Terri + Manya riff about how to talk with friends who have different political views.
Is it even possible to have friends with different political views? Yes--in a Pew study a few years ago, 40% of people didn't have a close friend who voted for a different presidential candidate. That means 60% did.
It can be a challenge to discuss differing political views with someone when being a supporter of a particular politician or party is a strong part of one’s sense of identity. That can make it easier to view the other side in a negative way.
There is value in having friends with different political views--the echo chamber, thanks to how we consume media, can make it so that we don't get to hear different viewpoints and friends can help us expand our thinking in that way.

This week we learned, and then talked about, men and women being friends with each other. We also learned that cross-sex friendship is referred to as heterosociality.
It turns out, that while many of us do have friends of the opposite sex, many people prefer to have same-sex friends and some have a significant subgroup of cross-sex friends. And both men and women who tend to value tradition and conformity have lower heterosociality.
(Note: In this episode we just discussed friendships between men and women. We will explore friendships across other types of gender identities in an upcoming episode.)

How do you stay connected with friends who live far away? Is there extra work to stay connected? Just because there may be a limited amount of time you can spend in real life with you friend, doesn't mean you can't still do things together. Research shows that friendships can flourish even without in person interactions.
Also, we end with the slightly alarming thought, which we will pick up in a future episode and examine in more detail: "We replace half our close friends every seven years. The ones who tend to make it are the ones we figure out how to maintain past changes.” (Shasta Nelson, friendship expert and author of Frientimacy)

It is easy to feel intimidated when trying to join a group of existing friends. They already know each other--will they be welcoming of a newcomer? How can you get to know the people involved?
Like all friendships, building friendships with a group will take time and effort. Also, every group has its own personality and you will need to figure it out to see if you fit in. From Project BFF HQ, Terri + Manya riff about how the pandemic has impacted our social lives and our friendships.
Especially early on in the pandemic, with many of us isolated in our homes and dealing with the stress of the pandemic, most of us faced limited time and energy to devote to friendships. It was a time that many of us, willingly or not, focused on quality of friendships over quantity. We ended up pruning some friendships and getting closer to other friends.
The pandemic changed the rules for hanging out. And for some of us, it also revealed that friendships do require work to maintain and really showed us the value of these relationships.

From Project BFF HQ, Terri + Manya riff about making friends by volunteering.
For those who have time to volunteer, it can be a great way to meet people. You are doing something you both enjoy and helping out the community. It isn't automatic that you will connect with someone while you volunteer, but you have a very good chance--since having things in common and spending time together are key building blocks for a friendship.
Volunteering is also a great way to strengthen existing friendships when you volunteer together and practice your social skills--even if you don't become close friends with anyone you share similar interest and have a shared topic to discuss.
In a recent survey, 1 in 5 people said that volunteering is a way to combat loneliness.

From Project BFF HQ, Terri + Manya riff about friendships in our current times.
There is a fear that friendships have changed, thanks to social media and our always-on culture. Is that really true? With Facebook choosing the word "friend" to mean our connections on the site, does that diminish the value of the word? Does online interaction with a friend have any impact on our relationship in real life?

From Project BFF HQ and Bergen, Norway, Terri + Manya riff with Jesper Algaard, founder and CEO of the Venn app, about machine learning and friendships.
Venn means friend in Norwegian.
How do we figure out who we will be friends with? What kind of people do we hang out with and why? And what do computers have to do with it? And how can technology make it easier to make a connection?
Jesper and the team at Venn have been doing some research about how we relate to each other and how people trust each other. Yet these qualitative studies only give a small piece of the story. How can machine learning help us understand what really draws friends to each other?
What kind of friend are you looking for--like, a gym partner, a travel partner, or a gaming buddy, for example? What are you interested in doing with a friend? What kind of social settings do you prefer? Once you enter in that info, you can find new friends. Venn has connected 10,000 friendships so far. And they have evolved to connect people in many different ways, including their new group activity setting (because for some folks, it can be easier to get to know people in a group instead of one to one.)

From Project BFF HQ, Terri and Manya talk about how friends can be the antidote to loneliness.
Humans are social animals, and that collaboration has enabled us to survive as a species. Loneliness "is an aversive state that has evolved as a signal to change behavior, very much like hunger, thirst, or physical pain, to motivate us to renew the connections we need to survive and prosper."
We all feel lonely at times. Profound loneliness is an issue that hides in plain site--we don't necessarily see it as a threat. Yet it can be as big as risk factor to premature death as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.
Feeling disconnected from people puts us on alert to change that situation and look for meaningful engagement. Reaching out to others and building friendships can be the cure for loneliness.

From Project BFF HQ, Terri and Manya riff about making friends as an adult. It doesn't just feel difficult, it absolutely can be challenging.
By the time we are adults our lives are more complex--families, children, work and career exceptions all take time and can make it harder to have time to devote to friendships. In addition, life just has a way of filtering people in and out of our lives as well, such as changes in politic beliefs, successes or failures (yours or your friends'), moving, strokes of luck, both good and bad, and even death.
It's estimated that it takes more than 200 hours of time together for someone to become a good friend. When you consider that the average American spends just 41 minutes a day socializing.
The pandemic has changed how some of us think about friends and friendships. With hours of isolation early in the podcast, we had some hard decisions to make about how to spend the time we did spend socializing, which friends and family to prioritize as we struggled with what was going on in the world around us.

We thrive when we are connected. And social connections are the key to happiness and health. "Loneliness can have long-term effects on health and is as lethal as smoking 15 cigarettes a day."
How to build a more connected life:
Obstacles to building friendships can raise the risk of loneliness. People skilled at friendship may have a natural defense against prolonged or severe loneliness. Those who are not yet as skilled can develop the habits and behaviors that support friendships.

From Project BFF HQ, Terri and Manya riff about ways to make new friends.
We discuss some ideas about how to build a friendship. Find ways to let people know you want to hang out with someone such as telling them you are enjoying hanging out with them. This may feel uncomfortable as we don't usually have that kind of conversation with our friends, talking about the relationship in the way often happens in romantic relationships.
Also, a key to making new friends is to show up. Be open to friendship, and also make time to do the socializing that builds and maintains friendships.
Did you know?
"Longing for closeness and connection is pervasive. Which suggests that most of us are stumbling through the world pining for companionship that could be easily provided by the lonesome stumblers all around us."

From Project BFF HQ, Terri and Manya riff on how friendship is both simple and complicated.
We talk about what we learned about social structures on What is Friendship? on How Stuff Works. What kind of structure do you prefer?
Throw in some conversation on the four core types of friendships:
And how our concept of friendship has been altered by social media: "The process of actually 'making true friends' hasn't changed! What has changed is the blanket labeling of acquaintances, acquaintances of acquaintances, and close friends all with the same title, 'friend."
And before we close, we remind ourselves to reply to friends who have recently called or texted us. We all forget, we all get busy. But friendships do require attention.

From Project BFF HQ, Terri and Manya riff about how our friendships change us--you change your friends and they change you.
Relationships should change us, and ideally for the better. One of the values of a friendship is the things we can learn from them. We don't always know we are being influenced.
In fact, many of our actions depend just as much on our friends as ourselves. We share our identities with the people we hang out with, and are influenced by them. We all find ourselves in situations where we don't know what to do, and often we look to the people around us to guide us. If the people you are with are a positive influence, you are likely to behave that way. Identification with a group can lead to negative behaviors, as well.
A study showed that the people we surround ourselves with have the power to make us fatter, drink more alcohol, care less about the environment, and be more risky about sun protection (see article below).

From the Boston Public Library, Manya and Terri riff on the quote from Maya Angelou: “A friend may be waiting behind a stranger's face.” ― Letter to My Daughter
We can easily get caught up being wary of strangers and as we get set in our friend groups it can be easy to not think about people we don't know. We can think about strangers as people we get to know. Even our closest friends were once strangers.
Also we talk about the green screen we are using, for those of you watching the video version of the podcast. Maybe we'll start a game for the video podcast: Where in the world are we?

Looking at the people we are friends with and thinking about what values we hold important that we want in them. Did you ever think about the qualities you are looking for a in friend, and the values that are important to share? Part of the friendship equation is: do my values fit with this person? There is no way you can discover everything about your friends. That discovery is one of the wonders and beauties of friendship. What questions do you ask to learn about your friends? Have you ever played Two Truths and a Lie with friends? Games like this can be fun ways to find out new facts about your friends. From Project BFF HQ, Terri and Manya riff on making friendship a priority.
You know, along with all our other priorities we all juggle. How do we make our friends feel they are a priority in our lives? How important is making it a priority to you? Do you have the bandwidth.
Friends are the family we've chosen for ourselves and bring a lot of value to our lives. We often do little things to connect, remembering important things about others' lives. Have you ever used a calendar to keep track of friends' activities, birthdays, vacations, etc.? What about those times we cannot prioritize our friends--because we have to focus on ourselves, our work, our families, etc. Sometimes we have to trust that a friendship is strong even when a friend cannot be a priority.

From Project BFF HQ, Terri and Manya riff about social media and friendships.
Building communities on social media platforms to keep in touch with all kinds of friends. The power of staying in touch and using it across the spectrum--sharing our highlight reels and sharing the difficult parts of our lives. How social media is different for all of us, including thoughts about online bullying. And the frightening dichotomy of this amazing tool to connect us and to enable people to tear others down. Did other forms of communication in previous eras feel the same to people then--like the advent of newspapers or tv?
Also thinking about guests for future episodes--how do different people of different ages think about and use social media?

Are you a pretty good friend if you are thinking "Is what I'm doing making me a bad friend"? What to do with the fear that you've done something wrong as a friend? How the pandemic has revealed how important friendships are and enabled us to have more grace towards our friends (and towards ourselves in our friendships).
