This is a very vulnerable one as I unpack my latest risk in life: Publishing a Book. It's not easy putting yourself out there in any form (podcasting, social media, art, writing, starting a business, etc.) so when you are met with a less than enthusiastic welcome it can send you into a tailspin (especially as an ADHDer with RSD). This is a tale of just that. It's not meant to shame anyone who didn't give me spectacular feedback or who sent in feedback at all, it's simply a telling of my mental health journey through the process of taking a BIG risk.

I hope you enjoy this episode and that it gives you a little insight into an aspect of putting yourself out there that people don't always genuinely talk about until they are super successful. But also, I hope that you leave wanting to support those around you a little more as we all journey through this life.

Today's episode is a candid conversation about what it's like to attend an event with ADHD. However, these days, knowing what I know now, I've learned how to navigate these events a little better. Hey ADHDer!

Today's episode is all about the ADHD identity crisis... not sure what that means?

Well an identity crisis is a period of uncertainty and confusion in which a person's sense of identity becomes insecure, typically due to a change in their expected aims or role in society. And I believe ADHDers go through an identity crisis later in the life due to three reasons:

1) We have always been given negative feedback about who we are and feel lost later in life because we are tired of being the opposite of who we actually are;

2) We like to try on a whole bunch of identities through hobbies and then feel bad (or others make us feel bad) when the hobby dopamine wears off and we no longer like it; and

3) We have always been people pleasers and never learned what we actually like because we spent all our time doing what everyone else likes instead.

Eventually we hate all of these things and sort of go through an identity crisis when we have to figure out how to function in a society that hasn't really let us function in it.

I have started making some changes in my daily routine to help some of the effects of ADHD.  It has helped my anxiety quite a bit.

Hey ADHDer!

On this episode we are chatting with a listener just like you! Alex Briault discusses her recent ADHD diagnosis, the process of getting her diagnosis in Canada and how cycling has helped her learn more about her own brain and cultivate a new sense of accomplishment in life!

Alex's Bio:

*I am a 32 year old Office Manager at a healthcare clinic near Vancouver, BC, Canada. I've been in this field for 8 years and I can't imagine working in another field. I have a BA in geography and am a certified personal trainer and running coach. I've been married for nearly 9 years and have two cats, Moo and Flynn. I was diagnosed with ADHD earlier this year and it completely flipped how I see and understand myself.

After running for years, I switched to cycling last year and have been enjoying being a beginner at something new and working on new skills and completely abandoning my comfort zone. I think one of the best things about cycling is that there are so many parts to it so there's always something interesting happening from new bike skills (I joined a cycling club this year too!) to bike maintenance to riding new areas and exploring!

I also knit, bake, build LEGO sets, actually like building IKEA furniture, and love me a good spreadsheet.

Hey ADHDer!

On this episode we are chatting with a listener just like you! Amanda Keener walks us through her later in life diagnosis, what it's like to be the wife of an ADHDer, and her favorite dopamine filling activities.

Amanda's Bio:
I'm a 37 year old twin mama to 8 year old girls. I currently work as a virtual assistant/project manager and have multiple side hustles to go along with it. I have been with my husband for 15 years and really just enjoy being together with my family and friends.

I see myself as a visionary and optimist yet I've just really felt something was not right with me. I can never manage to be the person I want to be and fall short in a lot of areas. My memory has always struggled, I am the queen of procrastination, late to (almost) everything, messy and disorganized, and generally refer to myself as a hot mess. Everything has always felt like chaos and I just have never understood how people have even a fraction of their life together. All of this was multiplied by having children. I've been trying to "fix" me my entire life through consuming all things personal development & self-help.

It wasn't until this year (2022) when I fell in to the rabbit hole of ADHD and had never identified with ANYTHING as strongly as I did with it. I decided to seek a diagnosis and it was clear to my psychiatrist that I was indeed ADHD. Now I'm just on a journey of self-awareness and learning how to be the best me while trying to cope with the fact that I will always have limitations.

Hey ADHDer or Friend of an ADHDer!

Welcome to today's episode which is on sort of a sensitive topic for some people and that's addiction. Some key takeaways from today's episode:

ADHD and Addiction can go hand in hand- especially if you are undiagnosed for ADHD. The impulsivity, novelty-seeking, poor judgment and risk-taking traits overlap between ADHD and addiction. Also, since ADHD leads to lower self-esteem... well addiction can swoop in and fill the void there if your ADHD is not treated.

So what do you do to help prevent addiction in your life:

1) Treat your ADHD- therapy, exercise, medications... these are all things that help and yes your read and heard that right... MEDICATION can help an ADHDer from having addiction issues in life. (Listen for more information)

2) Parents- talk to your kids about their ADHD and help them own it... and then talk to them about substance abuse or other addiction sources (internet, food, shopping, gambling, etc.)

3) Remember to HALT every day: Avoid Hunger, Anger, Loneliness, and Tiredness

If you are struggling with addiction reach out to one of these resources for help:

On this episode we are talking about how you even begin to build a daily routine with ADHD. Building off of episode 54 where we discussed why you need  a routine, this episode helps you figure out what to make part of your routine by asking yourself four simple questions:

1) Is there something you want to change or do differently in your current life?

This episode is all about journaling! From the benefits, to getting started, to not having a one-size-fits-all mentality, this is a wonderful episode for anyone who wants to start journaling but just doesn't know where to start.

Today's guest is Meghan Marie Hurley-Powell and she just wrote a book all about journaling! Here's a little info on Meghan:

Meghan is a writer, podcaster, and professor with a PhD in English. She’s deeply passionate about words, books, critical thinking, personal growth, and self-empowerment for women. Born and raised in Minnesota lake country, she currently resides in Iowa with her husband, Roger, and boxer-mix puppy, Banner. When she’s not teaching or writing, she’s likely talking way too loud on the phone, journaling, reading a romance novel, going for a walk, or re-watching Gilmore Girls for the zillionth time. Her greatest ambition is to empower women to realize their fullest power and potential.

If you've ever struggled to build a routine (in general, a "morning" routine, a personal development routine, etc.) then this episode is for you.

On this episode we chat about:

1) Why it's had for ADHDers to start a routine and stick with it
2) Why routines are important for ADHDers
3) Why the trendy or typical "successful people" routines don't always work
4) How you can build a sustainable routine for your ADHD brain

Want to build a sustainable routine? Here are today's tips:

1) Create more than one routine- create numerous versions of your routine that fit your energy levels or time constraints
2) Use timers and visual aids to help you build the routine
3) BABY STEPS- don't try to build a big routine all at once. Build it one step at a time (and check out the book Atomic Habits by James Clear for more insight)
4) Get rid of the idea that the routine can only bein the morning and let it fall where you need it to depending on your schedule.
5) Choose what your want/need to work on and don't worry about anything else people say you should do
6) Be okay with it being just "good enough" and not "perfect"

Today's episode is all about marking your ADHD, Anxiety, Depression or other mental health issues from the world. What is masking? Well, it's simply pretending you don't have an issue or disorder. It's a character you can put on each day to fit in and not seem different. It's an exhausting tool that just leads to more anxiety, eating disorders, and substance abuse issues. Masking is something we have to slowly unravel in order to understand ourselves a but better and show up in the world as our authentic selves.

IT IS EPISODE 50!!!! What what??

On today's episode I am breaking down who can give you a diagnosis, what to expect during a diagnosis evaluation, what you need to bring with you to the evaluation, and what the doctor is looking at. Of course keep in mind that every evaluation is different per the country, state, doctor and potential ADHDer, so this is all a basic overview of what you should know and should be taken as educational information and not personal advice.

Today's episode is all about Imposter Syndrome which I like to think as a little guy in a trench coat, a black hat, and oddly shaped black sunglasses  who roams around my head in the shadows most days until he decides to pop up and surprise me with a nice present filled with doubt.

What is actual Imposter Syndrome? It's doubting your abilities and feeling like a fraud, when you really aren't one.

There are 5 types: The Perfectionist; The Superhero; The Expert; The Natural Genius; and The Soloist.

This episode covers each types, gives potential causes and gives tips on how to combat your inner Imposter.

On today's episode we are talking about personal development advice you get from podcasts, books, or videos and how that advice while good intentioned can sometimes be ableist and damaging to people who aren't neurotypical or who have some mental condition.

Show Notes:

Q: What is ableism?

A: Ableism is discrimination and social prejudice against people with disabilities and/or people who are perceived to be disabled.

How one-size fits all personal development messages can affect people with ADHD or other mental conditions:

1)    Make people feel like there’s something inherently wrong with them because they can’t “Just do it”

2)    Pushes people to do things in one way instead of allowing for numerous ways

3)    Doesn’t allow people to be in tune with their intuitions or needs

4)    Doesn’t take into account that people are diverse

Today's episode covers why people with ADHD (and probably any other mental health diagnosis) struggle with ADHD and my three tips to help you start to shift that mindset and grow your self-esteem.

My tips:

1) Start with the foundation: who are you? what do you like? what makes you happy?
2) Identify the mean girl/guy voice that pops up every now and then. Whose voice is it?
3) Set Boundaries.
4) Choose to live for yourself every day. Choose you!

Welcome back for another episode! On this episode I am giving you tips, while working really hard to stay on topic for once, on how you can harness your anxiety and get to the root of those feelings!

Here are the 4 major tips:

1) Determine if you are feeling anxious, nervous, excited, or something else.
2) If its anxious, determine if you are in imminent danger (if you are get the heck out of that situation!)
3) If there is no danger, ask your anxiety what it's trying to tell you.
4) Once you know what the anxiety is trying to tell you, determine if you can control that issue and/or determine what steps you can take to resolve the issue... which might include letting it go if you can't control it.

As always, these podcast episodes are stories from my own experiences and not to be used as proper medical or legal advice. If you need help reach out to a mental health professional!

Today's episode is a little different because I brought my boyfriend Josh on to discuss things like moving in together, therapy individually as a couple, which of the seven dwarves he thought I was, as well as what it's like to both have neurodivergent tendencies and how I cannot for the life of me get Alexa to listen to me.

Do you ever feel like you just can't move forward in life?  Like something is holding you back? Maybe it's your excuses!! In this episode of The Neurodivergent Brain Dump Podcast we are chatting away about how to stop letting excuses get in the way of living your best life.

Top Three Tips:

1) Flip the script. Turn your "I don't have _____" and your "I can't _______" into "It's not important to me" and "I've chosen not to" and see how that feels.

2) Make a plan and plenty of them. Plan for low-medium-high energy days so you are always prepared to reach your goals.

3) Get the tools you need: timers, notepads, and calendars go a long way to deactivating your excuses.
