Welcome back to another episode of Dura Lex Sed Lex. As you may have seen, either in action or online, a lot is happening at RuG at the moment, as well as other universities throughout the Netherlands. As previously discussed with Dr Susanne Täuber, academic freedom seems to be questioned. A concern that has sparked outrage online and offline and resulted in numerous protests in Groningen. In other cities, such as Amsterdam, protests were caused by several factors, including the University of Amsterdam's partnership with Shell, the global corporate giant responsible for large-scale destruction of the environment.

Thus, on this week's podcast, we will discuss the right to protest and interview activists from multiple student organisations. In the first part of this episode, Eva and Georgia will talk about the European and Dutch laws that protect the right to protest.

Furthermore, in the second part of the episode we will hear from Alissa, one of the Dura Lex Sed Lex founders. She sat down with activists from the Amsterdam Autonomous Coalition (AAC) and Activisten Partij/Activist Party who are operating at the UvA in Amsterdam and were involved in the recent protests of January 13th and May 13th. They talk about their organisations, their goals and motivations, and discuss in detail what was going on at the protests. We would like to thank them for their participation in this interview, especially in the aftermath of such a violent altercation where several of their members were injured or arrested. We believe sharing these stories is paramount to promoting their cause and we stand in solidarity with them.

Welcome back to the latest episode of Dura Lex Sed Lex Podcast- this week’s episode is with Dr. Susanne Täuber, who has been a figurehead of the #AmINext movement in Groningen recently. Dr. Täuber was employed at the University of Groningen up until recently, where she was very publicly fired by RUG. The issue of her case has sparked many protests throughout the city, and showcases of national and international support from other academics. Dr. Täuber’s field of expertise lies in social psychology, and in her research she looks at the factors that obstruct the translation of policy into actual organisational change. In the past this specifically looked at gender quotas and diversity programmes.

In this episode Dr. Täuber joined us to talk about her case, academic freedom, patriarchal structures in academia and the treatment of protesters/whistleblowers. This episode was very interesting to record and very topical at the moment for RUG students and non-RUG students alike.

Hi everyone! Welcome to a new year with us at Dura Lex, Sed Lex!

This week's episode will be about a case that has been described as "the largest criminalization of solidarity" in Europe: We will discuss the case of the 24 Human Rights Activists who, for their voluntary work in Lesbos, faced charges of espionage, human trafficking, money laundering and fraud by Greek authorities. We will mainly focus on Seán Binder, one of the 24 aid workers that are being accused. Moreover, Eva and Georgia will talk about European migration policies and discuss them in regard to existing laws.
We are super proud of this week's episode as we are joined by a fantastic guest: Irish MEP Grace O'Sullivan. She is one of the MEPs who championed the case on an EU level and kindly took the time to answer our questions.

Welcome back to Dura Lex Sed Lex!

This week we will be talking about a very special topic that is often overlooked: the Indigenous Peoples around the world - their long struggle for legal recognition and ongoing strive to have that recognition adequately enforced.

Eva and Elena will give you some historical and legal insights regarding the lives of Indigenous Peoples all around the world. Moreover, they will discuss the current struggles of indigenous people and thus, they will be joined by an absolute expert on the topic, Medes Malaihollo, a Ph.D. researcher at the University of Groningen who is researching the legal aspects of lives of indigenous Peoples. Together, they will discuss some of the core and some of the emerging issues that Indigenous Peoples around the world have to deal with. In the first part of our episode, our hosts Eva and Georgia will examine the political history of Italy and how populism shaped the 20th century. We will pay attention to its implications on minorities, specifically LGBTQ+ people.
Moreover, we will take a closer look at the current political climate, thus, in the second part of the episode, Elena and Eva will be joined by some special guests. To get a better insight, we invited our Italian friends Edoardo, Enrico and Mic to talk about how the topic of populism is discussed in Italy and how their lives have been affected by this year's elections.

New Episode, New Season, New Team!

Dura Lex Sed Lex underwent some changes in the summer period. And now we are happy to announce the new team who will be continuing with this amazing project.
In this episode you get to briefly meet and hear from the new members - Elena, Eva, Georgia and Darina - who will be with you as creators of this season.

In our first episode of Season 2 Dura Lex Sed Lex dived into the interesting world of self-driving vehicles.
Autonomous driving and particularly its legal implication is not only part of the second year of the International law LLB program but is also a very current and interesting topic. Luckily, we were able to get a hold of Bashar Fteiha who is a Ph.D. researcher at the University of Groningen. He, as our guest speaker, was there to help us understand this legally complex topic by providing his expert opinion on different aspects. In the episode we discussed general definitions and functions of autonomous cars, current legal questions and solutions to their infiltration into daily use, and even possible cyber-effects and risks both in law and in fact.

Hello guys, Alissa and Anna are back after an intense exam + deadline filled period - these past 2 weeks have been stressful for them and probably also for you guys too! But since it’s Sunday you guys are in for a treat once again - a new episode will be live later today called „The Global Covid-19 Response and its Implications on Human Rights“ ! During this time Anna had Covid and was sadly unable to be a part of this interview - but Alissa did really well and asked Prof. Dr. Brigit Toebes all the interesting global health & mental health related law questions. Dr. Toebes is a professor at the University of Groningen and her expertise lies within the realm of health law in a global context. The two talked about health law in the context of the pandemic, the effect the pandemic had on human rights of individuals, the right to mental health and many more! Episode 10 - the podcast has come a long way!
On this weeks episode Alissa and Anna welcome the Our Rule of Law Team. Consisting of 4 second year LLB students, Anna, Tekla, Zuzanna and Elene are currently in the midst of organising their second event for exploring and countering the democratic backsliding taking place in Europe, including Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria and the Netherlands - It is happening in the University of Groningen Academy Building on the 24th of June (find more information on their Instagram page @ourruleoflaw). Last year’s festival brought together Polish and Dutch judges, academics, journalist and lawyers, and got national and international media attention. So, you can get excited for what this team brings to Groningen this summer! This weeks episode features a special guest - Tekla Emborg, a Tech Track LLB student at the University of Groningen. You heard that right, she is second year student, and the first time a student in general is coming up in a separate episode! Tekla made a draft for a potential honours course here at the University of Groningen, which discusses why students are so distracted nowadays how professors and others can use/bypass this to educate students more accurately. While the honours programme has not yet been approved, Alissa and Anna, who met Tekla through Dr. Mando Rachovitsa, found it very interesting as to how Tekla came up with this project and where her drive comes from. Together they also talk about how dangerous social media actually is and what students can do to be more present in their lives - be it socially, in a university setting or just on their day-to-day.

This weeks episode is going to be about something that many of you might not have heard about.. it’s almost as if these crimes were indeed swept under the rug. We are gonna be discussing the Magdalene Laundries of Ireland, which started sometime in the 1800s and continued until the late 90s early 2000s. During these times women, who were considered „broken“ or „promiscuous", were taken in by the Catholic Church to redeem themselves and choose a „better path“. I think we all know what this means. But how did this exactly happen? What work did these women have to do? And why exactly does no one know about these crimes besides people in Ireland? In the second episode of this week the duo is back together and interview renown professor Dr. Mando Rachovitsa and explore the realm of digital law with her. Among other topics the three discuss Digital Law within Society, Digital Human Rights v ‘Natural’ Human Rights, social media as propaganda and safeguarding privacy online. Moreover, it will be discussed how YOU can personally keep yourself safe online and what precautions you could take. Lastly, Dr. Rachovitsa and her colleges at the tech-law track (part of the LLB-course Anna, Alissa and their peers are taking) have possibilities for research positions and internships. Listen up! Mini episode incoming - this week you are in for a treat as we are releasing 2 episodes. The first one is an introduction to international law where we talk all about its origin, sources, the Court and we are spilling the tea on why international law does not always work the way it should. Stay tuned for our mini episode which will be released Wednesday at 6pm and for our interview with a special guest announced at the end of our mini episode!

During episode two Anna goes solo and interviews Prof. Dr. John Morijn, a Professor of Law & Politics in International Relations, and Human Rights at the University of Groningen to talk with him about the ongoing Rule of Law violations in Poland and Hungary. Among other topics, they discuss the interrelation of democracy, fundamental human rights, and the impartiality & independence of the judiciary, if EU financial sanctions can be seen as effective and how populism and abortive rights play into the overall picture in Poland. In addition, they will highlight how the situation within Hungary is similar yet different and finally how WE as citizens can actively show our support to the Polish and Hungarian citizens.
