Hi there. I'm Zhihao Zang, an iOS engineer on the LINE B2B App Dev team. A big part of what we do involves developing and maintaining the LINE Official Account app. Today, I'd like to share our experience (including some of the hurdles we faced) in migrating the LINE Official Account app from using RxSwift to using Combine.
We use RxSwift, a Reactive Programming framework, for the LINE Official Account app. RxSwift has a solid reputation and a pretty long history: the earliest rel
Hello from Donghyeok Kim, Jina Kim, and Seoyeon Lee. We are in charge of open source management at LINE and are currently working in the Developer Relations team and the Open Source Program Office TF to bring LINE's development culture closer to the open source development culture.
In 2021, we introduced the LINE Open Source Sprint event in the article below. In this post, we'll share the process and results of LINE Open Source Sprint 2023.
While mobile device storage capacity is getting bigger and bigger nowadays, user data is also increasing in size as well. Users can have tons of extremely high quality photos or videos which can eat away their storage capacity very fast. Moreover, digital content can be easily shared among users in many social media apps or messaging apps such as our own LINE app or Instagram to name a few. This data duplication can even put more pressure on device storage as well. Our LINE app is not only the same but also allows user to share their photos in their original size in chat, which can occupy a significant amount of storage capacity. The important thing is that device storage capacity is limited and often can't be changed after purchase. Users have no choice except to clean up their data, buy more cloud storage, or switch to a new device with bigger capacity.
Many LINE users may send messages that contain important data they would want to keep locally on their device. This is a p
Hello, everyone. I'm Nao, a developer of LINE's Messaging Server.
In 2014 we introduced a new development and release process for LINE Server (Blog post in Japanese only). Since then, the development environment and code has changed. In this post, I'd like to introduce the points that have been improved.
LINE's Messaging Platform consists of many Server Applications. One of them, Messaging Server, is a platform responsible for messaging functions, and we're working on multiple projects in parallel with developers from other teams.
When working on multiple projects at the same time, it's easy to get conf
Hello, I'm Keisuke Yamashita (keke) from the Verda Reliability Engineering team. In this post, I'd like to describe Verda's journey towards Infrastructure as Code and our vision of resource (for example, virtual machines, load balancers, Redis clusters) provisioning and management on Verda. This entry will also cover the necessary tooling preparations for using Terraform as a platform-wide resource provisioning and management tool.
Verda is LINE's private cloud based on OpenStack, a project that began in 2016. It's a public cloud similar to Amazon Web Services (AWS) or
We at the Open Source Program Office TF are finding many ways of cultivating a culture where LINE engineers and open-source ecosystems come together in a close relationship. We at the Open Source Program Office TF are working diligently to close the distance between LINE’s development culture and open-source development culture. With how many of LINE’s developers are dependent on open-source software, many of them may have had one of the following thoughts at some point: “One of these days I should really […]

LINE supports not only one-on-one but multi-user conversations as well. There were two types of multi-user conversations in LINE, Rooms and Groups, for different uses. Rooms were designed for temporary conversations in general. When creating a Room, you didn’t need to give it a name. When inviting a friend into the Room, you didn’t need to wait for their approval, […]

TL;DR:The baseline for web development in 2022 is: low-spec Android devices in terms of performance, Safari from two years before in terms of Web Standards, and 4G in terms of networks. The web in general is not answering those needs properly, especially in terms of performance where factors such as an over-dependence on JavaScript are […]

My name is Naoyuki Tachibana. I participated in the LINE internship joining the Network Development Team of the Verda Department for six weeks from September 6th. I developed an extension of the SRv6 function for the IS-IS daemon of FRR, which is the open-source routing platform LINE used in the data center, as the theme of the internship. I will introduce the result in this article.

Hello, this is Kyungjoon from the Security R&D team. I work as a FIDO (Fast Identity Online) engineer. Continuing from our last post FIDO at LINE: A First Step to a World Without Passwords, I would like to introduce you to FIDO2, and also share my experiences from participating in the interoperability testing event hosted by the FIDO Alliance earlier this year in March. Lastly I will talk about our very own LINE FIDO2 server, which will be made available as an open-source project.

I work on the backend code that supports some of LINE’s location-based features, and we’ve recently had an exciting project to improve our support for keeping track of nearby points of interest (PoIs) — shops, museums, anything you might want to know that you were close to.
