CULS 24th Denman Lecture by Tony Venables. Urbanisation in Africa: the challange of building cities that work.
While inequality between countries is falling, inequality within countries is rising – relative poverty is changing from a distant issue to one on our doorsteps. Drawing on his 2015 book, “The Globalization of Inequality”, François will present compelling evidence of these trends. Grounded in both economic theory and his extensive international experience at the World Bank, he will explore a series of measures: a top rate income tax of ~70%; higher wealth taxes; and social initiatives, to address these issues.
Denman Lecture was held on Nov 27th, 2014. Having spoken in 1997 at a previous Denman Lecture on "Environment and Economy in the New Millenium", Dame Fiona Reynolds 2014 lecture is entitled "The Case for Beauty". It will explore the intersect of conservation, town and rural planning policy, conservation policy and agricultural policy, and discuss why beauty has been taken into account (or not) over the past century, and provide some thoughts for the future.
