Being in a Band is a podcast for savvy musicians and music industry professionals who want to learn more about the music business, marketing, branding, strategy, mindset and all things, well, being in a band. Hosted by digital marketer, music journalist and musician, Monica Strut, this show is designed to be a resource for you to up-skill, become empowered and take your music careers to the next level.
Jon 'StayPuft' Garcia started his Twitch Channel in December 2020 after feeling disenchanted with his job. By March 2022 he'd not only grown his audience establishing himself as a go-to for new heavy music, but had been offered a position hosting streams for Knotfest, eventually quitting the day job and turning his passion for heavy metal into a full time gig.
I had the pleasure of working with Jon as his coach during this period and it's been a real treat watching his career unfold. In this episode, we chat about this progression, how he got started and the benefits of a platform that's been on the rise for the last 3 years.
You'll also hear Jon reveal he actually never felt confident sharing his opinions about music before starting his Twitch channel. Yet the fear of what others would think was not as strong as his passion for music and the result was finding a likeminded community and establishing himself as an authority in the heavy metal genre.
This conversation was recorded earlier in the year but the announcement of Knotfest coming to Australia reminded me I really need to post this interview!

Silverback Touring have brought bands to Australia such as Atreyu, Skid Row, Bruce Dickenson, Corrosion of Conformity Hardcore Superstar, Buckcherry and Crashdiet just to name a few. I worked a day job where for many years where I left at 5pm and didn’t have to think about work after hours. This worked for me for a long time. This month I hit a massive milestone where I made more money in my business than I did in my day job. This is something I've been working towards for a long time. Have you ever reached out to the media to get featured and never hear back? As someone who has worked in media for 7 years, usually this is because a) You're not reaching out at the right time b) There is no real goal in mind as to why you're reaching out OR c) You've left off important information from your press release i.e. the email that you send with your pitch.

This episode was prompted by my Facebook memories reminding me I finally visited LA as an adult two years ago! When I was in high school myself and the girls I was in a band with put all our spare cash into a kitty to eventually move to LA after graduation. We weren't a very good band but we were so determined to succeed that we would have done anything - even live in our cars in the Sunset Strip!
The memory of that determination is something I've often called upon when I've felt alone or like the whole 'music thing' is not for me. I hope you enjoy this little insight into an important part of my journey and the power of community, especially if like me, you've often felt like an outsider.
