Our stories. Journeys to thriving.

This will be a first in a series of solo episodes about our midlife journey. I am starting with a talk about defining midlife.

I ask that you set aside these 20 some odd minutes to listen without interruption and with an open mind and open heart. Maybe make yourself a soothing cup of tea and have your journal beside you as I prompt you with questions and thoughts that will hopefully provoke your curiosity, your thoughts and inner dialogue.

If you could have one inner wisdom statement right now, what would it be?

What do you feel is your biggest midlife challenge?

Are you ready for a new opportunity? Reframe midlife 'crisis' to midlife 'opportunity'.

Reframe your own crisis into an opportunity statement. ie my crisis is the loss of my identity. My reframe is this is an opportunity to create my new identity.

Use your imagination; how do you see your new life? Choose one area of 'new'; what feeling comes up for you?

Identify a persona that you take on in order to meet the expectations of someone else. How does that make you feel?

I'm thrilled to have as my guest a woman of inspiration. I befriended Deb through our common passions and am honored that she accepted my invitation to have a conversation on Talk With Sue.

Deb Johnstone is a professional speaker, writer, transformational coach, stylist, midlife transition mentor and yoga teacher. She is the founder of Women Reinventing MidLife and Transformational Pathways Australia.

She is the creator of her signature program HER Rediscovery and the Women Reinventing Mid Life Club. She’s host of the YouTube channel, WRM TV and host of the WRM Summit Series where she supports women in the middle phase and beyond to rediscover themselves, build confidence and find new exciting direction.

Deb has been through two midlife transitions herself. The first in 2012 as her kids were flying the nest and she started her own business. And the second when her dear father passed away and she hit rock bottom.

Guided by her intuition through her grief, Deb created and took herself through a process that helped her move from feeling lost and hopeless to reclaiming her confidence, sparking her motivation and getting in touch with her real sense of identity. This ignited her passion to help other women experience this phase of life as the empowering transformational period it is.

Deb says, "I have had a number of pain points. The first was when my mum passed away. I was 29 and pregnant with my second child. The second major one was my divorce and becoming a single mum at 34. The third major one was when my kids were getting ready to fly the nest and I changed my career to life coaching at 49. The most recent major pain point was when my father passed away and I hit rock bottom, learned to listen to my intuition and acted on it."

Author & Certified Life & Health Coach, empowering women to age audaciously in body, mind & spirit.

Lisa Levine has written a wonderful book about aging audaciously titled Mid Life, No Crisis.

We sat and talked our way through the book, chapter by chapter. There is too much goodness in this book and we didn't want to skip over anything,

Any women who is experiencing transition in midlife will benefit from this book. I know I did.

"The book provides easy, actionable advice to help you let go of what's holding you back to become the best version of yourself. The book is packed with humor, inspirational quotes and practical tools and encorages you to use this transformative time to practice self care, cultivate positive habits and overcome fear so you can start living the awesome life you deserve. The book is meant to help you create a plan to age audaciously on whatever terms you choose."

Lisa Levine

She is a Certified Life and Health coach living in Seattle, Washington.

Her career started in music business in NY and LA during the 80's and 90's working within the music video industry.

Her first life transtion was when she got out of that business.

From there she started working toward a Masters in psychology before becoming pregnant and going on to raise her children.

Around the age of 49 she wanted more meaning in her life and because of her own health challenges and that ofher daughters, her interest in health and wellness peaked. She went on to get a coaching certicate from the Martha Beck Institute and continued at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition.

By the time she finished her coaching certification, she had greater clarity of purpose in her life and had a direction she knew she wanted to go in. Prior to that she likened her experience like being in a boat in foggy waters without oars and not seeing the shore.

We covered all the chapters and this is a snippet of just a few:

There is so much we discussed that it's impossible to 'summarize' all that we spoke of.

The greatest take away for me, in the most powerful sense, is when Misha shared her experience of looking at herself in the mirror, realized she didn't like what she saw or felt. That was only the beginning of her new journey. A journey that started with questions. Internal questions she asked herself. She began hearing her internal answers through breaking away from her life of expectations to a place of silence and new spiritual practices.

It took great courage, in her own words, to wite her book, Gateway to the Soul. How often are we too afraid to corageously step forward and listen to our still inner voice that is trying to direct us to become our best selves. Misha shares about her courage to change her life. A life she knew needed change.

My conversation with Misha was so special for me. What she spoke of resonated with my own journey.

Saskia is a radiant, loving woman with a warm heart and super positive energy. She can take you through her enthusiasm and push you in a good direction. By struggling with her own pain, and finally seeing how old mechanisms work and transforming them into who you really are, without constantly focusing on what others expect of you. (Excerpt from quote by Alex Wisch, Saskia's coach)

www.wischfit.com

In Saskia's own words, "I became very adept at things I could do in such a situation (poor body image); stop eating, throw up after eating, follow a diet again, exercise like crazy before and after school. You name it and I did it. I was very good at strict regimens and kept them up just fine. At least for three days and then I ate everything that was lose, and stuck and started again from the beginning with that one look in the mirror. I was told without any shame that my dancing qualities were good but I "looked like a pig". That comment made me stop eating completely and put me in a life full of eating disorders."

"I now have a life completely free of any kind of disturbed eating behavior. To this day, I am amazed at how easily and with how much pleasure I find myself in this new situation that I could not dream of ever being possible again. I look with pleasure in every mirror I see, go out to eat as often as possible and I now do!"

Her pain revealed her superpower. Her coaching methods help other dancers, performers and women, from all walks of life who may be experiencing this pain, reach their superpower. (20+) Saskia de Badts Healthcoaching | Facebook; @saskiadebadtshealth; Home - Saskia de Badts Health Coaching

Kreed's story doesn't end with the lasting effects of childhood trauma. She tells her story in detail; not only the trauma's she experienced throughout her life but the lessons the trauma's taught her. We all have stories to tell. Maybe it's trauma, maybe not. Maybe your story is quite different but the result of being disconnected is the same as Kreed's. Kreed has valuable insights we can all learn from. How do we work through the conflicts in our lives; how do we recover to discover a place of joy, love, acceptance and hope. It is possible. Our lives and stories that render us stuck don't need to continue that way. There is a way through. You can experience a new, whole life in spite of your past stories that keep you from moving forward. If you are experiencing estrangement because of your family trauma, you can reach out to Kreed; I've put some links below. If you're stuck in your life, you can also reach out to me. I am a health and wellness coach who is willing to have a conversation with you in a safe ang gentle space. The most important change you can make to begin a new journey is to be willing. Just be willing to make changes. It all begins with willingness. It did for me.

My father died when I was 16.  He was only 53 and struggled with a debilitating illness, Myasthenia Gravis, for most of my growing years and during the prime of his life.  I was only 5 when he had to stop practicing as a surgeon at a local hospital and most of my memories are of a father that was physically weak and struggled daily to live his life in a dramatically different way than what his dreams were.  It affected the whole family, my mother and five siblings.  This is a memory of mine as his daughter.

Another meditation to bring forth good feelings. I often, or usually do, wake up feeling tired. I don't know if it's my age, maybe restless sleep, maybe side effects of Sjogren's syndrome, however I intention sit up, swing my legs to the side of the bed, please both feet firmly on the floor and stand up. Move. Not fast, but intentionally. Go to the kitchen, get my glass of water with apple cider vinegar (with the mother of course!), take my supplements and get to my mat for some gentle Pilates to wake up my body. Lots of deep breathing accompanies the practice which helps activate my mind and body. The coffee is brewing. I look forward to that first cup of coffee after my Pilates. I sit with my coffee and journal, listen to meditation, maybe some affirmations and a podcast that inspires me. My go to's are Gabby Bernstein, Brene Brown, Melody Pourmouradi, just to name a few. There's so much inspiration out there to help create good and uplifted feelings. We need those feelings to bring us through the day. We don't know what the day will bring. Whatever my day brings, I will keep coming back to the morning and the good feelings I was able to cultivate through this morning's meditation. Meditation can be challenging. I've been practicing it for almost 3 years now and I'm 68. I wish I had these practices sooner, especially throughout the times of raising a family, trying to stay balanced in my marriage. It would have helped. Instead, what helped was my will and my determination to make it all 'work'. Now, in this day, in this time, I am able to serve and honor myself with all the practices and decisions that serve me; that build me up; the bring me hope and gratitude for my past, my present and wonder about what the future will bring and knowing that I am a co-creator in my future helps.

Kreed Revere has a very important story to tell about her own estrangement from her daughters, and their eventual reconciliation. That experience, and her own therapy and deep inner work, has allowed her the opportunity to work with parents and adult children that are experiencing estrangement from one another. It is an insightful and moving conversation; one that caused me to think about my own relationships and their many parts that can make navigating through them so challenging.

What is the tipping point in a relationship where you travel from conflict to estrangement? Why do some relationships in conflict never experience estrangement while others do? Who suffers the most, the parent or the adult child? We talk about Dysfunctional vs Toxic relationships and how they each create a disconnect between people often resulting in estrangement. During our conversation, we attempt to root out some of the reasons for estrangement. How does ego effect estrangement and its outcome? How does vulnerability and forgiveness effect a very different outcome. We talk about gaslighting, a new concept for me. It enlightened me to see how I, as a parent, was guilty of that without being aware of what I was doing.

I invite you to listen with an open heart, and a sense of curiosity, an invitation that Kreed asks of her listeners.

If you are experiencing estrangement, you can contact Kreed in her Face Book Group - Estranged Mothers Support Group

Quotes:

"In healthy relationships, honesty is an expression of loyalty. You speak your mind to help the relationship grow. When you have love, trust and respect, candor shows care". Adam Grant

Sue Cockell is a world solo traveler and so much more.  What a wonderful conversation talking about her husband, her grief, her travels, her 'life list' and her 'coming home'.

A couple of quotes from Sue's blog sums up our conversation beautifully -

"After 2 years in and out of lock down, I have found my ultimate freedom.  That being on my own is enough for me. That I need to live in the present rather than dwelling in the past and don't put too much pressure on future plans. After all, you never know when they will be taken from you."
