Dr Erik Denison, with Monash University's Behaviour Works Australia, has conducted multiple studies examining homophobia and why gay athletes do not come out in sport. He investigates the underlying causes of prejudicial behaviour in sport and is developing and testing programs to make sporting culture more inclusive. NSW residents will soon be able to get vaccinations and some treatments prescribed at their local chemist, in a move a doctors’ group has slammed as “madness”. It mirrors a similar trial underway in Queensland, and practices in other countries such as the UK and Canada. A $2.8 billion saving for farmers and thousands of Newcastle jobs are expected to result from the state parliament removing barriers to the development of a huge container terminal in the Port of Newcastle. Honey Wines Australia is a mead manufacturer based in Broke with some big expansion plans for the future. But these plans have been thrown awry with the owner, and beekeeper, Martin Jackson losing 90% of his beehives due to the Varroa mite hive cull. Although highly supporting the necessity for bee euthanisation in Varroa mite red zones, Martin has some strong criticisms on the effectiveness of the rollout. More single-use plastic items will be banned in NSW from November 1 and anyone caught supplying them could be fined up to $55,000. The next phase in the NSW Government's phase-out of single-use plastics will kick in on November 1 with items such as plastic straws, plates, cotton buds and polystyrene cups no longer allowed be sold or handed out by businesses. The move has been welcomed by Plastic Free Port Stephens, which has been working to educate residents and businesses about the government's single-use plastic bans since before the first phase of measures was introduced in June. Tanilba House needs your help! On Sunday during their open garden event, it was discovered that the direction finder which was attached to a stone stand near the front of Tanilba House, had been stolen. The direction finder is state heritage listed like the rest of the house (built in 1831) which is set on three acres of beautiful garden. The challenge began this week and it’s not too late to join fellow animal lovers dedicated to preventing cruelty. How can you become involved? And gradually that past is revealed. 30 years after the reading of his first play, not one dream but two are being realised for Scott. A bill to outlaw coercive control will be introduced to the NSW Parliament this week, after Attorney General Mark Speakman gave formal notice in Parliament today. If passed, NSW will become the first Australian state or territory to have a dedicated stand-alone offence of coercive control. Coercive control is a form of domestic abuse that involves patterns of behaviour that have the cumulative effect of denying victim-survivors their autonomy and independence.

Sione’s Foundation exists to improve the current living standards and provide a better future for the whole Tongan community, with a key focus on children who are disadvantaged, marginalised or isolated. The registered charity is run from Newcastle by former NRL star Sione Finefeuiaki. Sione was born in Viaola Hospital Tofoa, Tonga in 1979. After an eight-year-long career in Rugby League with the Sydney Roosters, Melbourne Storm, Manly Sea Eagles, and finally the Newcastle Knights, Sione retired in 2010. From here, he created Sione's Academy; but that wasn't enough for him.

Following ten months of consultation, the Future of Football Review - Final Report and Recommendations was released to Northern NSW Football Federation Members and Clubs on August 22. Despite still awaiting feedback from Members, Clubs and Zone organisations, the Board of Directors of Northern NSW Football has endorsed the final report and its recommendations.

A new survey from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) paints a very disturbing picture of our society and the extent of coercive control being experienced.

Newcastle Knights have an unhappy history when it comes to dealing with concussions.

Of the five lows which pummelled Australia on June 8 and 9, 2007 the “Pasha Bulker” storm was the most significant. The storm caused major flooding, strong winds, and high seas killing nine people and damaging thousands of homes. NSW is facing a massive shortage of police recruits because potential trainees are forced to spend thousands of dollars just to apply for the job and even more once they begin training. Before applying to become a NSW police officer, potential recruits are required to obtain a University Certificate in workplace essentials from Charles Sturt University costing $1728 if paid in advance or $2160 if incurred as a student loan payable through HECS. It's tough working in emergency services at the moment; especially when services are NOT able to be delivered to the public. The NSW Government has expanded its list of fire stations that can be subjected to the practice of TOLing, which means stations can be closed for a certain period of time. Newcastle Theatre Company‘s latest production is a romantic comedy called Barefoot in the Park It opens on 26 March and runs to 9 April, with matinees on 27 March.
