Turning the envelope over, I’m greeted by a large wax seal. My fingers brush against it, and I hesitate. The longer I hold this envelope in my hands, the heavier it begins to feel. Something in me hardens; it knows that if I so much as break the seam, there will be consequences.

I was reading on the subway when all of the sudden we stopped in the middle of the tunnel. Wrapped up in my copy of this morning’s local newspaper, I almost didn’t notice, but the murmurs of the other passengers soon dragged me out of my reading and into the present.
