The bulk of the show centered around city officials, welcoming onto the program City Manager Ron Fehr, Mayor Linda Morse and Commissioner Mark Hatesohl. Manhattan's city government meets this evening at 6 p.m. for a legislative session, during which the commission will reorganize along traditional lines with Hatesohl -- the current mayor pro tem -- expected to be elevated to the mayorship for 2023. The second segment, the trio discussed a positive year revenue-wise for the city as well as previewed the evening's meeting. Aside from the reorganization, commissioners will conduct a public hearing to vacate a utility easement in the Interlachen Addition in West Manhattan. The first half of the program welcomed ICDD Director Dr. Colene Lind as well as Beach Museum Curator Aileen June Wang. The two discussed the 'Do You See What I See' exhibit on display at the museum, intended to challenge viewers to reconsider their perspective on a representation through considering how others may view it in a safe setting. Wang and Lind also highlighted a facilitated panel discussion led by Museum Specialist Nate McCLendon about the exhibit coming up on Nov. 3, as well as the ICDD and Beach Museum's blossoming relationship of collaboration.
The second half of the program, we were joined via phone by Pawnee Executive Director Robbin Cole from Topeka. She was awaiting her scheduled testimony before the Kansas Legislature's special committee on mental health beds, and shared a preview of her testimony about challenges facing the mental health workforce as well as discussed the state of mental health in Kansas in light of low national rankings.

The program opened with a conversation about the new school year and enrollment expectations for the Fall as well as strategies to increase KSU's student body count. Linton further discussed his regional community visit initiative and the university's plans to modernize the College of Agriculture and develop in the Edge Collaborative District -- formerly called the North Campus Corridor.

City Manager Ron Fehr and City Commissioner Usha Reddi joined the program for the hour. Thompson reflected on a recent special meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and gave a preview of the afternoon's meeting. He also went over the department's plans for recreation offerings this Fall.
Amid some technical difficulties, we were joined by WIC Supervisor Kaylyn Speth and Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Earlisha Killen in light of National Breastfeeding Month to highlight their office's observance and the services they provide.

The show opened with a conversation with Election Supervisor Ashley Rice about the upcoming August 2 primary election and the advance voting numbers as of Tuesday. She also discussed the preparation that goes into the process.
Segments 2 and 3 welcomed Commissioner Greg Riat onto the program. He provided a recap of Monday's commission meeting, which included conversations about the possibility of a sales tax ballot question to support infrastructure projects in Pottawatomie County. He further discussed bids for the new signal at the intersection of Columbian Road and Hwy 24.
The program ended with a preview of the Pottawatomie County Fair. We welcomed 4-Hers Hayes Rickstrew, Hope Jacobs as well as Tyrre and Delaney Figge to the program to discuss how they got involved in the program and what they're looking forward to as the fair approaches on August 3.

On Monday's edition of In Focus, KMAN welcomed guests from the Sunset Zoo, organizers of the Everybody Counts event, as well as the Manhattan VFW and Kansas JCI Senate.
The first half of the program, we were joined by the Zoo's Marketing and Event Coordinator Jayna Ukrazhenko. She discussed how the organization copes with high heat as well as rainy days -- and what they can provide both animals and human guests in terms of reprieve. Ukrazhenko also previewed numerous upcoming events including the Chamber's HYPE Flamingle event on July 28, Water Safari and Water Matters Day on August 6, and announced ticket sales opening on August 1 for Brew at the Zoo.
Deb Nuss joined us in segment 3 to talk Everybody Counts, now in its 10th observance since its creation in 2014. It's scheduled August 6th from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the 900 block of Yuma Street in the Douglass Recreation Complex. Community service organizations will be set up throughout the day, with free health screenings for humans and pets available from 9 to 11 and a free community brunch from Hy-Vee scheduled at 10 a.m. -- among more opportunities.
The show closed with a conversation with VFW Post 1786 Commander Dan Watkins as well as Kansas JCI Senate Committee Chair Marcia Toy. They previewed the upcoming inaugural Rally In The Valley Autofest, organized by the Kansas JCI Senate and Broken Studs Motorsports and planned August 6 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. behind the Midwest Dream Car Collection. A standing-room only crowd came out Monday for a public forum on the future of Parks and Recreation programming, held at Manhattan Fire HQ.
Manhattan in June had announced the possibility of programs being modified or suspended depending on the city’s revenue picture into Fall and Winter, leading to organization and conversation around the topic by numerous residents.
Comments stressed the importance of Parks and Rec offerings for lower income residents, and pushed for the department to better engage with the community to foster volunteer opportunities as well as sponsorships to support programs.

The Staley School of Leadership Studies bid farewell Friday to visitors from the 2022 Mandela Washington Fellowship class.
The flagship program of the Young African Leaders Initiative, Kansas State University's Staley School has hosted cohorts for the 6-week leadership institute since 2016. This year saw 24 fellows from across the African continent come to Manhattan to study civic engagement through volunteering, meeting with state and local elected leaders, as well as visiting with officials from non-profits and businesses throughout the region.
The Fellows were seen off with a graduation ceremony as the cohort prepares to depart for home -- with a couple heading to Texas and California to spend a month gaining professional development experience in their areas of work or study.

City Manager Ron Fehr and Commissioner John Matta joined the show for the hour. In the first segment, the two discussed the beginning of budget season and construction updates.
Segment 2 got into items on the consent agenda for the night, including issuance of STAR bonds in association with the Art and Light Museum Project, the approval of a $300,000 contract with Kimley-Horn and Associates to conduct an ADA self-evaluation and transition plan, and authorization of the sale of Public Works facilities at 620 and 621 Juliette to Howie's Recycling for over $1.5 million.

Thursday's edition of In Focus featured Dr. Timothy Shaffer, K-State associate professor of communication and director of the Institute for Civic Discourse and Democracy, as well as Pawnee Mental Health Services Marketing and Development Director Diane Hinrichs-Toburen.
In the first half, Dr. Shaffer discussed recent work by the Institute to facilitate conversation and brainstorm possible uses for the soon-to-be vacated Manhattan High School East Campus, currently used as the school's 9th grade center separate from the campus-proper. He also gave a life update, noting he accepted a position with the University of Delaware and will start work there in the Fall.
The second half of the program focused on Pawnee Mental Health, Hinrichs-Toburen discussed mental health awareness month, the S.T.A.R.S. Camp, as well as their fundraising efforts and donations from the recent Grow Green Match Day.

We were joined by Cpt. Josh Kyle and Communication Center Manager Tyler Siefkes. The duo talked about recent budget presentations by the department to the Law Board, requesting pay adjustments to better recruit and retain employees. Siefkes also talked about changes in dispatch services as technology has changed and support offered to employees that have experienced stressful or traumatic calls.

Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jason Smith was Thursday's guest for In Focus.
Smith spoke about the recent announcement regarding Scorpion Biological Services, Inc.'s planned facility in Pottawatomie County, the work by the Chamber and local officials to secure the project, and what it means for the local economy and avenues being explored to address housing needs.

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly and other officials say Scorpion Biological Services, a subsidiary of Heat Biologics, Inc. announced plans for a $650 million, 500,000 square foot biomanufacturing facility. It will eventually be located at the northeast corner of Highway 24 and Excel Road in Pottawatomie County and the company will seek an island annexation into the City of Manhattan.

Monday's In Focus featured KMAN's monthly visit with the Riley County Historical Museum as well as a preview of the upcoming Little Apple Pride Parade and Festival.
For the first three segments in the program, Nick was joined by Museum Director Allana Parker to talk about Manhattan City Park history. Conversation flowed from the park's founding in the earliest days of settlement to the Pioneer Log Cabin and Tattarax Monument. Parker also shared information on the history of Johnny Kaw and his statue located in the park's southeast corner.
The last segment featured Little Apple Pride Co-Chair Jonathan Mertz to preview the parade and festival planned for Saturday, April 23. The parade begins at 11:30 a.m. starting at the swimming pool parking lot and ends at Wefald Pavilion. Entertainment, food and vendors will be on-site through 4 p.m.

City Manager Ron Fehr introduced the city's new public information officer and communications manager Andrew Lawson. Lawson recently relocated to Manhattan from Arkansas City, where he worked as PIO for Ark City.
Fehr and Commissioner Wynn Butler then discussed the busy agenda planned for city officials Tuesday. The evening will feature three public hearings, two related to a proposed private Art and Light Museum, as well as one related to the new Meadowlark Hills independent living facility.
The commission will also consider authorizing the city to apply for FEMA grants to remove flood-prone properties as well an ordinance establishing a process for filling governing body vacancies. They'll also look at eliminating multiple ordinances on meetings for which the corresponding State statutes no longer exist.

In Segment 1, Recreation Supervisor Ryan McKee previewed the agenda and also discussed the department's April events, most imminent being the Easter Drive Thru Event coming up on Saturday April 16. In Segment 2, Discovery Center Marketing Coordinator Deanna Likes and Education Supervisor Kat Colburn talked about the center's 10-year anniversary celebration on April 14 and upcoming recognition for this year's Friend of the Flint Hills, Bruce Snead, on April 9. Today is the last day to get tickets to attend the FotFH ceremony.
FHATA Executive Administrator Daphne McNelly was in-studio for Segment 3 to discuss a 10-year anniversary of their own as well, with fixed routes in the Manhattan area now entering their 10th year. All April, ATA bus fare is free on Friday in recognition. McNelly discussed the routes as well as tools and websites available to help riders get where they're going.
