I’m Jen Carrington, an online business guide and I’ve spent the past eight years building and running my own simple and spacious business and supporting hundreds of my clients in theirs too. In this show I’ll be diving into the ways we can bring more simplicity, ease, joy, and intention to our work - through both the nitty gritty practical shifts and all of the mindset shifts that comes with running your own business too.
This podcast isn’t here to tell you how to build and run your business, instead I want to support you to build and run your business in whatever way truly works best for you.
This is my last day of work before I sign off for my summer sabbatical and I feel something close to that giddy excitement that I used to feel as a child before the school holidays of knowing that there’s an abundance of open space ahead of me to spend however I wish to each day.
And my body is so ready for this break.
To just be Jen the human for the summer, not also Jen the business owner.
In today’s episode I share a little more about my plans for my summer sabbatical, how I made it possible to take this time off, and hopefully some encouragement for you if your body is ready to slow down and rest this summer too.
I’ll be back in September ☀️

One of my big goals for this year was to redefine what launching my group program gets to look and feel like in my business.
After four years of doing three enrolments a year and putting a whole lot of energy into the warm up and launch window I knew that my body couldn’t sustain that anymore.
And not just that, I also just felt really done with that type of approach to launching.
I wanted it to feel way simpler, much more low-lift, and gentler on my nervous system too.
So I decided to really slow down and soften my sales cycles this year.
To do six mini low-lift enrolments instead of putting pressure on just three times a year to reach my sales goals.
To sell to smaller segments of my email list and prioritise the waitlist most of all.
And to opt-out of the narrative that we need to churn out more content, build more hype, and create more urgency to make enough sales to sustain our business.
In today’s episode I share how my mini enrolments have been going so far this year, all of the numbers and sales, what I think has been supporting these sales cycles to gently thrive, and encouragement for you if you’re craving a slower, gentler, more low-lift approach to selling in your business too.

Rarely a week goes by where I’m not talking about pricing with my clients and YS&SB members.
It’s both a really practical and emotional topic in our business.
Practically our pricing is just what we charge for the work we do and how we design our offerings in a way that makes it sustainable and profitable for us to deliver them.
But emotionally it can trigger a whole lot of feelings and fears.
Fears around, who will pay me this? And am I allowed to charge this? And what about the people who can’t afford this? And am I even good enough to be paid this? And will I be able to make enough sales at this price point?
And I’ve navigated this messy middle in my own business recently too as I made the decision to increase the sliding scale tiers for my group program after the next enrolment in July.
In today’s episode I dive deeper into all the thoughts and feelings behind this pricing decision and some encouragement for you if you’re currently feeling stuck on what to charge or how to give yourself permission to increase your prices so that you don’t abandon your own needs in your pricing.

If you ever feel like there are markers of success and growth that you have to hit to feel good enough in your business, today’s episode is for you.
Because it’s okay to have a slower season in your business to honour the needs of your life.
It’s okay to adjust your workload to make space for other priorities.
And it’s okay to gently dial things back up again too whenever that may honour your desires and goals.
Our business can bend alongside us and be something that grounds and supports our life instead of consuming it and dictating our days.
So if you feel torn between what you truly desire in this season and the goals that you think that you should be pursuing instead, I hope today’s episode can ground you back into what is most aligned for you.

One meaningful piece of content a week.
That’s the foundation of my gentle marketing plan for this year.
To carve out the energy, space, and time each week to sit down and create something that just feels like a meaningful dispatch from one human being to another.
So much noise online right now is telling us that we need to be churning out content for business growth.
That we need to please algorithms, hook attentions, and that if we can’t keep up with that pace then we should outsource to AI and let that create our content for us instead.
But in all of that noise I think we can lose sight of what actually builds, grows, and sustains a business: resonance, connection and trust.
In today’s episode I share some encouragement for why you don’t have to churn out more content to support your business to gently thrive and how I’ve been supporting my business to make steady sales, reach new hell yes people and continue to build resonance, connection, and trust with my existing readers and listeners too without pushing myself past my capacity.

It has now been four years since I first opened the doors to my group program Your Simple & Spacious Business in April 2022.
Four years since I built a whole new foundational piece of my business model and redefined what my work gets to look like and brought a whole lot more spaciousness and flexibility into my business too.
And for today’s episode I want to share with you the biggest lessons I’ve learned from running and selling this program, what’s supported it to gently thrive over the past four years, and why you never have to feel stuck in any one version of your business that isn’t truly working best for you.
I also share how much money YS&SB has made since 2022 and how building and running this program really changed everything for me in my business.

Whenever I come across business advice that I’m deciding whether or not if it’s relevant and supportive for me and my work I ask myself two questions:
Do I have their day? And do I want their day?
Because the real question isn’t: will this strategy or approach work?
But instead, will it actually work for me?
Over and over again I come back to the reminder that our day is the whole damn point.
Because that’s the beating heart of a simple and spacious business: doing work we enjoy, spending our days and weeks at a pace that feels good to us, and where we are making enough money to sustain our life too.
In today’s podcast episode I share more about why our day is the whole damn point and how we can root into that as our guide whenever we feel lost, overwhelmed, or overstimulated by all of the noise of what we should and could be doing next in our business.

My business hasn’t always been this simple & spacious.
I used to be overbooked, undercharging, and deeply burned out in my work each week.
It’s taken a whole lot of intention, patience, and experimentation to design my business to work best for me and I’m so damn grateful to have built a working life for myself that feels aligned with my capacity and the daily life that I want to be living.
There are five key decisions that have supported me to build, run, and sustain this simple and spacious business of mine and in today’s podcast episode I dive deeper into each of them and offer up some lessons learned if they can support you in your own simple and spacious business journey too.m

Something I’ve been thinking a lot about recently is how much de-centering my business has been one of the most supportive decisions I’ve ever made in my working life.
Don’t get me wrong, I am so damn grateful for my business and so devoted to doing my best work for the wonderful humans I get to walk with each week.
But I’m also not obsessed with my work, or endless growth, or defining my self-worth by how much I get done each week.
We get to build businesses that orbit our life, not the other way around.
And we get to do this whilst also running businesses that sustain our life financially and give us space to do work that we find meaningful and fulfilling too.
One of the ways I do this in my business? By taking regular time off throughout the year.
This year I’m taking 15 weeks off from my business and in this week’s podcast episode I’m sharing more about how I make this possible and some encouragement for how you can build more time off into you schedule too.

I received an emailed recently from someone asking if I outsourced any tasks to a virtual assistant in my business as they just couldn’t believe that I was able to sustain my business in just 8-10 hours a week.
And their question makes sense.
My workweek isn’t the norm.
But as I shared with them, apart from my husband editing my podcast episodes each week there is nothing else that I outsource in my business.
8-10 hours a week is truly what my workweek looks like whilst continuing to make a steady and thriving income in my business.
I’m also not outsourcing any of my work tasks to AI (everything I write, create and share with you is and always will be human made).
In this week’s podcast episode I dive deeper into the specifics of what my workweek looks like, the decisions I’ve made to make this possible, and some encouragement if you’re currently craving more spaciousness and don’t believe that it’s possible for you.
Does it take time, patience, curiosity, and one brave decision at a time to make this possible?
Of course.
But we don’t have to stay stuck in a version of our business that asks us to abandon our humanness to sustain our work.

For my first podcast episode of the year back in January I shared all about planning for 2026 when we don’t know what our capacity will be.
I entered this new year with so much clarity around my creative desires, for the mini book of essays that I want to write and self-publish, for the first draft of my novel that I want to chip away at this year, and the app my husband and I are working on together too.
And I also knew that I would have to be okay with the messy, imperfect, and beautiful road that I walk down as a human who lives in a chronically ill body.
Because the gap between my creative desires and my capacity can feel so huge some days.
In this week’s podcast episode I recorded a catch up from Q1 in my business and creative work; I share how business is feeling really good so far this year and what’s working well and how I’m adjusting my mindset and approach to expanding what my body of work can be this year too as I continue to slowly work on my creative projects.
More than anything, I hope this episode helps you feel less alone if you’re also navigating a gap between your desires and your capacity too and that you know that it’s possible to bridge the gap between where you are now and where you truly wish to be next in your business and creative life without sacrificing your joy, peace, and wellbeing in the process.
Sometimes we just have to be okay going at a slower, gentler, more flexible pace.

Four years ago when I first built and launched my group program Your Simple & Spacious Business I made a very gut driven decision to price it as a lifetime offer.
Instead of needing to continue to renew and pay to keep access to all of the resources, coaching, and community inside members pay just once and then continue to get access at no extra cost.
Do I have any regrets? No.
Even though I know I’d make more money if existing members had to continue to keep paying, and therefore need to do less marketing to welcome brand new members in each year, I’m so glad that I priced the program this way.
But does that mean that I recommend this pricing structure to everyone else? Not really.
And would I do it again for a different offer? I don’t think so.
In today’s podcast episode I dive deeper into all of this and share all of my feelings, thoughts, and lessons learned from pricing an offer this way and why it’s the best worst business decision I’ve ever made.

Living with two chronic illnesses means that I have many routines, structures, and boundaries that I rely on in my business so that I can continue to sustain my work and income whilst also honouring the daily realities of living in a disabled body.
I talk a lot about the ways I’ve designed my business model and offers to work best for me and to be a space where I’m able to do meaningful work with my clients and customers and today I’m getting a little more granular and sharing with you five routines that support my simple and spacious business each week. I share:
🗓️ How I plan my workload a quarter at a time
📝 How I use weekly time blocking
🌿 Why I never work on Wednesday’s and Friday’s
🌼 My marketing Monday’s
🌸 And how I offer asynchronous 1:1 coaching each workday without feeling overwhelmed
My hope is that today’s podcast episode can spark some ideas for ways you can build routines that support you to gently thrive in your business each week too.

I’ve found that we talk a lot about growth as small business owners but not enough about actually sustaining these businesses of ours for the long run.
Because longevity has always been my goal, not the endless pursuit of more, more, more.
Sustaining the energy, devotion, courage and creativity that my business asks of me has been essential for me in my work ever since I started my business 12 years ago now.
It’s how I’ve been able to stay committed to doing my very best work for my clients and customers and continue to sustain steady sales in my business thanks to strong word of mouth, testimonials, and sustaining a gentle marketing plan too.
So today I’m sharing the ways I’ve supported my business to sustain a client workload for over a decade now, from the ways I’ve designed my offers, to how I protect the space I need to hold space, and why downloading my brain was one of the best decisions I’ve made and more.
Whatever your business model, my hope is that this episode holds some space for you to explore what sustaining the energy, devotion, courage, and creativity your business asks of you looks like for you too 🌼

Over and over again my clients have been telling me: I want launching to feel simpler, more easeful, more low-lift.
Either big, intense launch plans have exhausted their body and nervous system in the past or they’ve avoided selling altogether because what they think they have to do feels super out of alignment for them.
And I get it, because I’m right there with them too.
As I shared in my last episode I’m leaning into much softer sales cycles this year and so far it’s feeling really good.
If old school launching advice and being told that you have to go big, build hype, and create more, more, more sales content and take up more space than feels sustainable for you is holding you back from creating sales cycles that support you to reach your financial goals, I recorded this week’s podcast episode for you.
In it I share six gentle alternatives to go-big-or-go-home launch strategy that I hope can crack open some fresh ideas for how you can sell this year in a way that resonates and connects with your hell yes people and actually feels fun and sustainable for you to bring to life too.

One of my goals heading into this year was to redefine for myself what launching and sales cycles get to look like in my business, especially for my group program Your Simple & Spacious Business which I sell multiple times a year.
Sales were a little slower at times last year but doing bigger launches also just wasn’t feeling good for my nervous system and capacity anymore either.
And so much of the advice I saw last year in response to many people’s launches not working as well as they used to was to do more: build more hype, create more urgency, build more volume and virality, more, more, more.
And I’m just not interested in extracting from myself to sustain my business or to feel like it’s my job to perform or persuade in my work.
So when I was mapping out my sales cycles for 2026 I decided that I what I want to experiment with this year are mini enrolments rather than big launches, to take the pressure off each launch, and to embrace lower-lift sales cycles rather than feeling like I have to go big and push myself to do more, more, more.
In today’s podcast episode I share more behind the scenes of how I’m embracing softer sales cycles in my business this year and all of the behind the scenes of this launch, why I only sent sales emails to a 5th of my email list, and what I think supported this first mini enrolment of the year to gently thrive and reach my goals.

As a society we celebrate fast growth, pushing through, and overcoming whatever obstacles are in our way.
Yet over and over again I see my clients truly crack open gentle momentum and growth in their business journey - and actually have the capacity to sustain that growth - when they are brave enough to honour their needs in the process.
When they go at their own pace, when they opt-out of the growth-at-all-costs mindset, and when they tend to their nervous system every step of the way.
I’m a chronically ill parent and there’s no way I would have been able to sustain my business for over a decade now without deeply honouring my humanness in my work.
I have a mantra: our needs are the answer, not the obstacle.
They’re how we can feel resourced and rested enough to actually sustain the courage, experimentation, and devotion to doing our very best work that running our own business asks of us each week.
So in today’s podcast episode I share more about what it’s looked like to see my own needs as the answer and not the obstacle in my business and some encouragement for how you can do the same too.
You’re not alone if you need a whole lot of space to tend to the needs of your life, body, and mind in your business. I’m right there with you, needy and refusing to be ashamed of it.

A wonderful human left a comment on one of my Substack essays recently that inspired today’s episode. They shared:
“I’ve spent the last few years reclaiming my identity from coaches and gurus I purchased courses upon courses from. I was so desperate to find the answer to unlocking success… along the way, I completely lost myself. I’ve been slowly but surely finding myself and rebuilding confidence”
I think that there is so much gentle power in reclaiming our entrepreneurial inner compass in our business.
In redefining the hierarchy in our mind of who knows best what our business needs to thrive.
And I think outsourcing the leadership of our business and believing that someone else knows better than we do is such a dangerous way to not only disconnect ourselves from our own inner wisdom but also lead us down an entrepreneurial path that probably isn’t built to truly work best for us.
In today’s episode I walk you through five simple steps to reclaim your entrepreneurial inner compass if your head feels really noisy right now from everyone else’s noise and if you’re doubting your own entrepreneurial instincts and craving deeper intuition in your work.

I have been the breadwinner for my family for over a decade now, which has at times felt so empowering and at times also felt like a whole lot of responsibility on my shoulders too.
After five years of mostly being a stay at home dad and retraining to be a software developer, my husband started a full time job last October so heading into 2026 I now have the option to earn a little less this year in my business if I want to.
I’m still the higher earner and probably will be for quite a few more years to come but I am no longer responsible for almost all of our financial needs and long term goals and my nervous system was honestly so ready for this.
So in today’s episode I’m sharing some very in-the-moment thoughts, feelings, and reflections on how it feels to be able to earn less money this year if I want to and all of the big messy feelings that’s brought up for me too.
And most of all I hope this episode can encourage you to know that how much you earn in your business isn’t the most interesting thing about you in your work and that your financial goals don’t have to exist in response to anyone else’s.

A conversation that I have over and over again with the wonderful humans I work with is encouraging them to know and trust that marketing gets to feel way more simple in their business.
I have been marketing my business online for 12 years now.
12 years, hundreds of clients and customers, thousands of email subscribers and social media followers, and over a decade of sustaining my business financially without doing anything that I don’t want to do to reach my sales goals.
There is so much noise out here telling us what our marketing plan has to look like.
Expert after expert telling us what we should be doing to reach our sales goals and sustain our business.
It’s a lot and for those of us who crave slower, gentler, more spacious businesses it goes completely against our needs to feel like marketing is a place where we have to perform and persuade and extract from ourselves energetic resources that we don’t actually have available to give in our business.
So in today’s episode I’m sharing with you a calmer and more human approach to marketing in 2026 and some questions that I find so clarifying when it comes to rooting into intention with our marketing plans. I also share some behind the scenes of what I’m prioritising and experimenting with in my marketing this year too.

I feel more clarified at the start of this year than I have in a long while.
Or perhaps, more than clarified, I feel like I am in deeper dialogue with my desires and creative curiosities than I have been in recent years.
There’s a mini book of essays that I want to write and self publish, an app that I’m building with my husband, a novel idea that I want to get lost in - all whilst gently sustaining my business and doing my very best work for my clients and customers too.
And also… I’m still a human who lives in a chronically ill body, I’m a parent, and I’m also just a deeply introverted human who doesn’t thrive at a go go go pace.
I have no idea what my capacity will be this year - 2025 was a very low capacity year for me with lots of health challenges, and as I enter this brand new year with creative desires, a business I want to continue to nourish and sustain, and a simple daily life that I like to fill with walks, reading, and naps whenever I need them too, I am balancing both gentle devotion to my creative desires and an acceptance that I want and need to honour my own humanness and capacity and pace every step of the way.
In today’s episode I share more about my desires and creative projects for the year ahead and a simple process for moving towards your own desires and intentions for your business and creative work this year whilst honouring your humanness, your needs, and your capacity inevitably shifting too.

Do you ever feel utterly exhausted by all of the strategic business advice you navigate on the internet? By all of the ways you could be growing your business? And by how inaccessible so much of it feels for the capacity you actually have for you work?
Today I’m sharing with you how I opt-out of business strategy that isn’t accessible for my capacity or in alignment with how I actually want to be experiencing my business and two gentle questions you can ask yourself to figure out what you actually want to work towards in your business and what pace you want to move towards those goals and desires at too.
If you want business to feel calmer and more clarified for you in this season and more attuned to your capacity and humanness, today’s episode is for you.

Sometimes life throws us unexpected curveballs and laughs at all of our best laid plans and forces us to adapt and adjust in ways we couldn’t have prepared for.
That’s exactly where I’m finding myself right now - adjusting to the fact that my vision for this season looks nothing like I thought it would due to navigating some new health challenges.
In today’s episode I share the messy middle behind the scenes of the past couple of months of my life and business, the three questions I asked myself to ground into acceptance and clarity in this season, and some encouragement for knowing you’re not alone if you’re navigating a season of your life and business that looks different to what you first hoped and planned for too.

In today’s episode I share why I still believe in the magic of long-form content in my business and why writing newsletters and recording podcast episodes is still where I prioritise the majority of my marketing energy in my work. I share why I’d rather reach less people at a slower and gentler pace rather than trying to hack an algorithm and people’s attention spans, and why I trust this approach to marketing as it’s served me very well for a decade now.

I recently published a piece on my Substack called: dear small business owner: it’s okay to have fluctuating income.
It’s a topic I wish we talked about more as small business owners - the natural highs and lows and ebbs and flows of entrepreneurship and normalise that income growth isn’t always linear (and that maintaining our income instead of always chasing more, more, more is a beautiful choice too!)
So in today’s episode I’m expanding on that piece a little and sharing with you the lessons I’ve learned about navigating fluctuating income in our business and my overall mindset when it comes to money and business too.

I share how I approached the launch, how I honoured my capacity through my marketing plan, the breakdown of when sales came in throughout the launch, and how I held my nervous system through what I’m calling ‘the five day desert’ too.
I also share my thoughts and ideas for launching YS&SB moving forward this year and, more than anything, my hope is that this episode can encourage you to know that you are allowed to launch and sell your offerings at a gentle and sustainable pace without burning yourself out in the process.

If email marketing is a priority for you this year and you want to feel re-energised with your content plan I hope this episode can encourage you to do exactly that.

Have you ever heard of the ‘1000 true fans’ framework?
It argues that instead of needing a customer base of millions, entrepreneurs and creators just need 1000 true fans to run a profitable and thriving business.
In my own journey I’ve always reframed this as hell yes people (the word fans gives me the ick) and in this episode I’m sharing why I’m prioritising reaching 100 hell yes people in my business this year (and why I’m focusing on 100 instead of 1000) and how I’m planning on doing so too.
If you ever feel utterly overwhelmed by marketing strategies and ideas and you just want to approach supporting your business to thrive in a really gentle, human, and sustainable way, this episode is for you.

Launching is such a big part of my business and a key piece of how I reach my income goals throughout the year.
But launching can also feel like A LOT. A lot of work, a lot of taking up space, and a lot of nervous system activation too.
After a decade of launching in my business and all of the highs and lows along the way, this year I want to embrace a gentle, human, and sustainable approach to launching and in today’s episode I’m breaking down exactly what I want that to look like this year.
If you often feel overwhelmed by all of the launch strategy and advice out there too this episode is here to give you permission to do it in a way that works best for you.

Everything I do in my work is all about supporting fellow business owners to build a simple and spacious business for themselves but there is a key caveat I think it’s important for me to make: a simple and spacious business isn’t a perfect business.
Building more ease, joy, and flexibility into our business model doesn’t mean that we won’t have some weeks or months where we feel a little overstretched, or that we won’t navigate challenging clients and customers or that we won’t have experiments that don’t turn out as we hoped that they would.
