For some of us, we never had that moment where we were ushered from boyhood to manhood, and not getting that affirmation sometimes leads to us looking for it in unhealthy ways.
My guest Steven Arms and his family have crafted a rite of passage that they have done in their family and I believe this is a message that will help us dads with sons prepare them and equip them to be men of stature.
Hope you enjoy this episode.

I had the honor of sitting with Nick Adams to discuss his book that is out now, and his story.
His story is truly impactful and its amazing to see how God has Fathered him and worked in his life.
This book is a testament to men who may have had a tough or traumatic upbringing that there is hope, and God does Father the fatherless.

I was feeling discouraged and at the end of the day I just wanted tto get a Lego set and build. Why? Often times, I wish my faith my life was like a lego set. Do X,Y and Z and this will be the outcome, how I wish things worked like that, but God has better and bigger things in mind then simple to-do list.

There is so much confusion in America on the idea of masculinity and if the America is confused you better believe that our children can get caught up in that confusion.
As Dads and leaders of our family we have to be the ones to model masculinity and bestow masculinity to our sons.
This episode I'm sharing some thoughts of how I had to receive masculinity from other men and how I am trying to model that in our home

I watched ESPN 30 on 30 and it was about the boxer Tommy Morrison, most know as Tommy Gunn from Rocky 5.
He had a tragic life, but one that could of been a lot different had his dad led him differently. It made me think of the impact we have as fathers to our children and how vital our example and leadership is needed in guiding our families.

Hollywood does know how to tell a story. Some stories are great and some aren't but one thing that they almost always seem to hinge on is the importance of fatherhood (whether they believe it or not).
In this episode I highlight some great stories, that share some powerful messages on fatherhood.
I do believe that it is in story that we can see the greater story of God and His rescue and redemption for us in Jesus.

How is character built? In the Heart Based Parenting approach one thing they like to say is character is built in the detour. So often we don't want to take the long route we want to take the quick and short route which is behavior modification. This isn't only in our kids, but its also in us as men, our character is built in the detour.

What happens when we don’t address our hearts and the beliefs we have. As men we can easily believe that if we provide for our families we deserve respect. Is that true? Are you struggling in your circumstance? As fathers and husbands there will be many times that we find our selves struggling and questioning God. And that is where this Psalm speaks truth because after everything David goes through and after he lays it all out to God he cannot help but end with Yet...you are Holy.

My wife turned to me the other day after our leading our parenting course at Church and said "Wow, what a difference it makes when a Dad get's it." Our decision to take ownership IN the home makes a difference, yet more often then naught we let our wives take the front in that department.

I am reading the book Practicing the Presence of God, it is about conversations between Brother Lawrence and other colleagues. Brother Lawrence had first started using this practice while he was on kitchen duty peeling potatoes. He practiced the presence of God in the mundane in the things that probably felt like it had not significance, but he made peeling potatoes a holy and joyful time. How can we do that in our lives?

This episode is about how we can have expectations on our kids that can hurt them. I'm not saying expectations are bad, we need to have expectations at a certain level, but some expectations can lead to hurt in a child's life. And we have to be mindful of which expectations we are putting on them.

"Since we are sons of God, we must become sons of God" -George Mcdonald.
This quote has impacted me to really understand the journey of becoming a son of God. It is essential that we know that and believe this because how can we partner with God in doing the heartwork of our family if we are not in the fully awareness of being a son of God. Everything I do flows from the knowledge, grace and identity of being a son of God.
