KVC West Virginia is a state-licensed child placement agency dedicated to strengthening families and preventing child abuse and neglect. After seeing a need for more educational options for youth experiencing foster care, KVC partnered with First Star Academy and Fairmont State to offer Middle College.
Middle College at Fairmont State University is a specialized, on-campus academic program created for West Virginia youth in foster care. It provides a pathway for high school students to simultaneously earn a high school diploma and an associate degree (or college credit toward a bachelor’s degree).

We're thrilled to welcome Erika Wimmer back to today's episode. Erika, a former educator in the public school system for 14 years, taught every grade level in elementary education and served as an instructional coach and interventionist.
Growing dissatisfied with the public school system, Erika learned about the Hope Scholarship and microschools. She saw this as the perfect opportunity to start her own school. Securing a $10,000 grant, she set up her school in a local recreation center. However, on the same day, the Hope Scholarship was revoked, causing seven prospective students, all with Hope Scholarships, to withdraw their plans to attend Erika's school.
Now that the Hope Scholarship is back in effect, we're excited to have Erika back to provide an update on her microschool. Join us in this week's episode as we explore microschools and discuss the impact of the Hope Scholarship on these schools and the families relying on it.

From there, she moved into a board of education role in Florida, where Governor DeSantis had rolled out the Civics Literacy Excellence Initiative, helping implement the new Civics & Government standards and providing professional development and support.

We’re excited to have Jodie Witmer, owner and founder of Wild & Wonderful Enrichment with us on the show today. Jodie started her career in education in the summers of her college years, working with kids in small groups. She graduated with a Bachelors in Elementary Education from Shepherd University.
When her son turned three, they started forest school, and she shares that it was their first introduction to homeschool. She went on to eventually enroll him in public kindergarten, but during his first grade year, she felt that they needed a transition.
After attending a workshop, Jodie’s eyes were opened to so many educational possibilities & ideas. She began homeschooling her son, and wanted to open up a place for other homeschool families to bring their children for enrichment activities. The idea of Wild and Wonderful Enrichment was born.
Wild and Wonderful Enrichment offers small groups, hands-on learning, and exploration of nature for homeschool students. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents who want their kids to get additional enrichment classes in addition to what they are already receiving in their homeschool education.

Kristen embarked on her professional journey as a dedicated medical professional, committed to on-call shifts that often stretched into weekends and late nights. However, the demanding schedule led her to grapple with the reality of being away from her family. Driven by a desire for a more balanced life, she pivoted towards education, obtaining her teaching certificate and passionately teaching for four years.
As a mother of four children, managing a full-time teaching job became overwhelming. The pivotal moment arrived when two of her adopted children faced challenges within their private school environment. Seeking alternatives, Kristen turned to a friend experienced in homeschooling for guidance.
This encounter sparked a life-altering decision to homeschool her children, prompting Kristen to downsize her home to afford the opportunity to stay home and prioritize her family's needs.
Transitioning from traditional teaching to homeschooling opened doors for Kristen. She ventured into co-op teaching environments and eventually began conducting portfolio reviews.
Today, as an education consultant deeply involved in homeschooling and the foster care system, Kristen Adkins embodies resilience, compassion, and a profound dedication to the holistic well-being of children and families.

In today’s episode, we are chatting with Melissa Mohr, Head of School at City On A Hill Christian Academy. Melissa has been in the private school setting for 19 years and in education for even longer.
City On A Hill opened in the fall of 2022 after Melissa and a group of educators saw a need for another schooling option and teamed up to fill that need. In its inaugural year, the school had over 50 students in attendance from grades K5 through 12.
With classes capped at 15 students, the school is set to begin its second year in the fall with close to 100 students. With a four-day in-class week, Biblical integration is at the forefront of their curriculum. Fridays are utilized as homeschool days with enrichment activities to support what they’ve learned in class.

Kathie Hess Crouse serves as a member of the House of Delegates. She is a mom of 5, past president of West Virginia Home Educators, the first female athletic commissioner for the West Virginia Athletic Commission, and she currently runs the largest Facebook group for homeschoolers called The Unsocialized Homeschoolers of West Virginia.
Kathie’s three oldest children graduated from public school. An unfortunate experience with one of her younger children’s kindergarten teacher caused her to pull him out of public school. She weighed her options between private school and homeschooling and ultimately decided to homeschool her two younger children.
Kathie has been in the school choice arena since 2010 and has dedicated much of her time and resources to empower parents to homeschool if they feel led to. She believes that every parent has the ability to teach their children to love to learn.

In today’s episode, we are sitting down with Heidi Treu, executive director and founder of West Virginia Academy. West Virginia Academy is West Virginia’s first charter school.
After moving to West Virginia, Heidi & her husband started their children in public school. One year into their public education, it was apparent to the parents that their children were not thriving in this environment. The Treu’s made the decision to pull their children from public school and homeschool them.
After a year of homeschool, they decided to give public school another chance, and once again were not satisfied with the progress. Heidi couldn’t understand why no one had started a charter school in the area. She had created a curriculum for her kids based on West Virginia legislation, and decided to take the plunge.
This is when West Virginia Academy was born. The academy has a structured program where they run on a 9 weeks on, 2 weeks off schedule year round.

Today on the show, we have special guest West Virginia State Treasurer Riley Moore. Treasurer Moore started out as a welder maintaining mining equipment. He worked his way through college, and went on to work on Capitol Hill on the House Foreign Affairs Committee as a National Security Advisor. Eventually, he left government and worked in the private sector defense industry. After some time, Treasurer Moore felt the pull to public service, moved back to West Virginia, and was elected State Treasurer in 2021.
In today’s episode, we are discussing different savings plans and programs with Treasurer Moore. Our state has some great programs to take advantage of, and we are excited to share what we’ve learned about them with you.

Today on We Have Hope, we are chatting with our editor and friend, Victoria Evans. Victoria lives in Salem, West Virginia with her husband Travis and their two children.
In our conversation today, Victoria shares about challenges her daughter had before, during, and after the school shutdowns, and how school choice made a way for them to find freedom, flexibility, and stability in a time when they needed it most.
In the 21-22 school year, the Evans family switched both of their children to a homeschooling partnership at Centerbranch Academy. The partnership combines the flexibility of homeschool while providing consistent core instruction three days a week, making it a wonderful alternative for both stay at home parents and parents that work outside of the home.

Seven years ago, Kristine Ayers Cline saw a need. She was in a field in which she worked with people with disabilities and she started to notice a pattern: Many of those she worked with would come into her office asking for help to file for social security benefits. She had the ability to help them file, but she chose first to try to inspire them instead. Her belief is that ‘everyone can do something’.
Kristine has a passion for helping children find & achieve their dreams.. and out of this passion, Laurel Academy was born. She believed that she could help students avoid the typical cycle by partnering with them at a young age. Laurel Academy is a private Christian school located in Terra Alta, West Virginia, specializing in special education.

Welcome back to the We Have Hope Podcast! Today on the show, we are chatting with Angie Channell, founder of Mountaineer Homeschool Hub.
In 2011, Angie’s son came to her and asked her to be homeschooled. He was in second grade at the time and was being bullied in school. After some research and support of friends and her husband, Angie took the leap into homeschooling her son.
Their homeschooling journey continued through 6th grade, and in 7th grade, her son decided to try school again. By his 8th grade year, he decided he wanted to go back to homeschooling.
When her son graduated high school and went on to college, Angie decided it was time to fill her time with another adventure. In 2019, she started offering an Intro to Photography course. Over time, her class sizes grew, and she decided to officially start Mountaineer Homeschool Hub and offer more classes in February of 2020.
Mountaineer Homeschool Hub is a homeschool enrichment center that offers classes, events, and activities that enrich the homeschooling experience. Tune in to learn more about this unique learning opportunity!

WVU High School ACCESS Early College Program allows 10th-12th grade students to take college courses while still attending High School. The only requirement is a 3.0 grade point average. Students can apply on the program’s website which we will link below. The program is open to anyone in the country and classes can be taken online or on campus.
This program provides a great opportunity for students to obtain college credits before even graduating from high school. Take a listen to find out more!

Welcome back, friends! Today on the show, we are joined by Katie Switzer, founder of Monongalia Forest School. Katie lives in Morgantown with her husband and four kids. In the summer of 2021, she began looking for a forest school for her kids to participate in. When she didn’t find an option that was the right fit for her family, she decided to start her own!
Katie reached out to a friend who had been running a forest school in another state for advice, and the friend offered to share her curriculum with her. That’s when Monongalia Forest School was born. In her first fall session, Katie had 13 families sign up, and she now averages around 60 families with 100 children!
At Monongalia Forest school, you can expect to go to a new location each week, take a hike, explore, climb, and play games. Sessions are offered on Thursdays or Saturdays. We really enjoyed learning about this unique program for families, and we hope you will too!

When Ashley Matheny was growing up, she always thought she would be a Public School Teacher. She imagined herself teaching for 30 years and then retiring. While she did end up teaching public school, it didn’t go exactly as planned. She taught for several years, but around year 4, she began to feel ‘burnt out’. After a medical leave of absence, Ashley ended up resigning.
During her time of healing, Ashley’s mind was opened up to new ways of living out her calling. She started out as an online tutor around 2015, and eventually broke out into tutoring on her own for a family from Orlando. She created a program for that family at the beginning of the pandemic, and then one Sunday evening she created the website for Whole Child Learning Academy. From there, more families began to sign up, and she is in year three of the program.
We are excited to share this awesome schooling option with you and hope to open your mind up to new possibilities in education!

Welcome back, friends! We are excited to share today’s episode with you! We had the chance to sit down with Roy Ramey, President of the West Virginia Home Educators Association to talk about all things homeschool.
Roy is a retired military officer. He spent 33 years in active duty in the Reserves and Guard. At a young age, Roy developed a passion for homeschool, despite the fact that he was in the public education system. He made the decision that he wanted to homeschool his future children before he even had his daughter. Roy’s teaching experience first began in high school where he tutored peers and even did some student teaching at an elementary school. From there, he joined the military and held multiple teaching positions throughout his career. One of his most rewarding positions was being an ROTC professor at Marshall University.
Roy also moved to be the Commandant of a military academy in Texas. He was responsible for creating the academy and teaching leader and instructor training courses for the Army Reserve. The academy had roughly 1,000 students come through the program every year.
His service in active duty had him out of town a lot, which meant his wife had to take care of the homeschool teaching, but Roy eventually was able to come home and teach his daughter full time. He now teaches as a Homeschool Co-Op one day a week in which his daughter attends and he is the President of WVHEA.

Welcome back to the We Have Hope podcast! We are so excited to share today’s episode with you. We sat down with Cyndi Rookstool, director of Centerbranch Academy to chat about the schooling option they are offering.
Cyndi is originally from Orlando, Florida where she taught for 6 years. Her family moved to West Virginia around ten years ago, and she noticed there weren’t as many school options for her children. They found a school they loved, and Cyndi taught there for a couple years while her three older children attended there. Eventually, they switched to homeschooling for six years, and then her oldest two went to public high school. After that, they decided to avoid public school for their younger two children.
In 2020, Cyndi and her husband began to brainstorm how they could come alongside parents and help them learn to teach their kids to read. After a conversation with their pastor, he really caught the vision of what their idea could look like on a bigger scale. Cyndi began to have conversations with friends in other states whose children attended various schooling options, and eventually came across a school model in Texas that intrigued her. She and her husband flew out to Texas and observed the school. Not knowing if anyone in her area would be interested in this model or not, they decided to give it a try.
They came back to West Virginia and with the help of their home church, they started Centerbranch Academy. Centerbranch Academy is a Homeschool Partnership that offers tutoring for grades Kindergarten through Eighth Grade Tuesday through Thursday, 9AM to 2PM. They cover all of the core subjects, plus art, PE, & Recess. In just their second year, Centerbranch Academy has over 70 students enrolled and some grades have a wait list!
We believe this is just the beginning of unique schooling options to come to our state, and we are excited to share more about it with you!

Sometimes you just have to be willing to be the first at something. About 6 years ago, Lynnette Haizlett saw a need. The community where she lived didn’t have many schooling options. They had public school and then one Christian school about a half hour away. After discussing it with her husband, he suggested that they start a Christian school. Though it would be a huge undertaking, this felt like the right move as Lynnette’s dad was a Director of Christian school for years.
Lynnette’s church had a large facility that they graciously let the school begin its first year in. She said that the further into planning that they got, God continued to provide for their needs and settle their doubts. They now have their own building. She received her Bachelor's Degree with a Secondary Teaching Certificate in Mathematics from Wheeling Jesuit University and a Master's Degree in Secondary Teaching and Technology from California University of PA. She has over 30 years of teaching experience and is not afraid to go against the grain in education to see her students become the best they can be.

Did you know that Dyslexia affects one in five people?
One of those people is Jaimee Szymanski’s sister. Over the years, Jaimee watched her mother help her sister learn, and she developed a passion for helping others with dyslexia. She went on to become a speech language pathologist that specializes in dyslexia diagnosis and tutoring.

Eyes and Brains STEM Center in Elkins, WV is focused on providing an independence driven, student led learning experience. Founder and Director Eric Eisenbrey had taught in the public school system for ten years, and ended each school year feeling like he was coming up short. He felt that students’ needs were not being met, and he was determined to create something to meet those needs.
In his research, Eric came across the concept of microschools, and it clicked. After much research, he started Eyes & Brains STEM Center. The center offers nontraditional instruction, as well as offering a Lego Robotics program.

Today, we are chatting with Marc LeBlond, Director of Policy for Ed Choice. Ed Choice is the intellectual legacy of Milton Friedman. Their mission is to advance educational freedom and choice for all children as a pathway to successful lives and a stronger society.
Marc grew up in Connecticut and comes from a school choice family with three other siblings. Growing up, his grandmother paid for him to attend private school. He now has four children of his own and lives with his wife and kids in Pennsylvania. Marc’s family has explored educational options from public schools, to public charter schools, homeschooling, and his children are now in private Christian School.

Have you heard the news?! The Hope Scholarship is back in business!
To recap - The Hope Scholarship Program is an education savings account (ESA) program that will allow parents and families to utilize the state portion of their education funding to tailor an individualized learning experience that works best for them. (Taken from hopescholarshipwv.com)
The Hope Scholarship was originally supposed to launch for the 2022-2023 school year, but an injunction was filed & granted on July 6, 2022 forcing the program to come to a halt. This left many families who were counting on the scholarship in a very tough situation. Many of these families who were planning on enrolling their children in alternative schooling options had to change plans due to no longer having the funds they expected to have.
On October 4, 2022 , the West Virginia Supreme Court heard the case again, and on October 6, 2022 the injunction was officially dissolved. The Hope Scholarship Board held an emergency meeting on October 10th to discuss this ruling. The Treasurer's office will email all parents who had already applied for their students. Funds are set to be released in full by January 15, 2023. If families choose to keep their children enrolled in public school for the 2022-2023 school year, but would like to, they will be able to apply for the next school year on March 1, 2023.

What is a Charter School?
There are a lot of common misconceptions about charter schools. In today’s episode, Kim & Leah have a chat with James Paul - Executive director of WV Charter School Board, a board that was created one year ago to authorize new charter schools in West Virginia.
A Charter School is a tuition free, independent public school that receives more autonomy and flexibility from the state in exchange for more direct accountability. A lot of bureaucratic jurisdictions that apply to public schools do not apply to charter schools. There are less regulations and red tape which gives more flexibility to the school. There is a high level of accountability placed on the school and the parents. Charter schools only receive funding for each child that is enrolled, and they lose funding if the child leaves.
There are currently four charter schools open in WV, however charter schools have been around for 30 years across the country. Every governing board is required to have two parents on it. Charter schools only get 90% of the funding per student that the traditional public schools get.

Erika Wimmer has been an educator in the public school system for 14 years. She has taught every grade level in elementary education and has been an instructional coach and interventionist. Erika has two children - a 20-year-old and a 6-year-old. Both of her children have been in the public school setting, but her 6-year-old has not had a great experience.
Erika was growing unhappy with the public school system and began to hear about the Hope Scholarship and micro-schools. She decided that it would be the perfect time to start her own school. She acquired a $10,000 grant and got a place in a local recreation center to start her school. That same day, the Hope Scholarship was revoked. Seven students plus her son were set to start with her school, all with Hope Scholarships.
The revocation of the Hope scholarship caused all seven of the prospective students to withdraw plans to attend Erika’s school. In order to make the income needed, she would now have to take 20 students at half of the tuition she originally planned to charge. Unfortunately, this would take away from the personalized education experience that she had dreamed of offering in her school.

What is the Hope Scholarship? How can the funding be used? Will the Hope Scholarship be able to move forward? In today’s episode, we talk with Andrew Bambrick, Education Outreach Coordinator at the Cardinal Institute about all the details of the Hope Scholarship Program.
There are some misconceptions about the program, and Andrew is eager to clear up the confusion and help people better understand how it works. The Hope Scholarship is a portion of state-allocated educational dollars that would be allotted to eligible students for use on state-approved educational programs. The funds would be transferred into the students account to be used with the pre-approved providers.

In today’s episode, we dive in and learn about Kim Dully, Grassroots Coordinator with Love Your School. Kim is married and is a mother of 3 kids ages 9, 8, & 6. Kim’s children attend a Private Christian School at which she and her husband were part of the planning committee.
The mother of 3 is also the oldest of 3 kids. Things were tough for her family growing up, which eventually led to her grandmother bringing Kim, her mother and her siblings from San Antonio, TX back to Pennsylvania to be close to family. Her father followed. Over the years, Kim’s parents worked many jobs, but their home was not a safe place. Her father struggled with alcoholism, and her mother suffered from mental illness. When Kim was 15 and a freshman in high school, her mother passed away.
Determined to take charge of her future, Kim started taking college prep classes. When she was a senior in high school, she went to the school counselor for help getting into college. To her surprise, the counselor told her she just assumed she wouldn’t be going to college. Despite this, Kim persevered and went to Penn State where she got her undergrad in Rehabilitation Services. College became her escape.
While at Penn State, she took a lot of Education classes as she originally wanted to be a school teacher. Due to a GPA requirement, this didn’t end up working out. Eager to rise above her circumstances, she then moved to Pittsburgh and went to Duquesne for Counselor Education. With an interest in child social and emotional learning, she eventually found her way to K-12 counseling.

Join us today as we sit down with Leah Peck, Grassroots Coordinator with Love Your School. Leah always knew she wanted to be a mother. It was her biggest goal for as long as she could remember. At 28, she hadn’t had any children yet and decided to look into foster care. In 2019, she adopted her son at 18 months old. Six months later, she met her husband who already had three children. Since getting married, they’ve fostered another child and their home has had an open door to many children.
Leah had an interesting upbringing. Being raised in an ‘evangelical cult’, women were expected to do nothing but ‘mother’ children. Leah believes that naturally, she picked up some of her maternal instincts from this experience. She was the child of an opiate addict who unfortunately lost their life to their addiction. She lived a very ‘reactive lifestyle’ until she reached parenthood and realized that she could live ‘proactively’.

Welcome to the We Have Hope Podcast where we will discuss school choice options in West Virginia, the Hope Scholarship, and more! Today, we are talking with Founder & Executive Director of Love Your School, Jenny Clark, to learn more about how the program was started, and where it is going!
Jenny Clark was homeschooling her two young boys, and felt that something was ‘off’. A friend suggested that she have them evaluated. In the evaluation, she was told that the boys did not have any learning disabilities, but the struggles she was facing were due to them not having a ‘proper education’. This didn’t sit right with Jenny, so she obtained two independent evaluations that uncovered the boys were experiencing dyslexia and dysgraphia.
Jenny’s experience inspired her to become an advocate for other parents and families to help make them aware of their rights and resources. She wanted to help them know what questions to ask. This calling brought her to start Love Your School in her home state of Arizona.
Fast forward to two years ago, Jenny was asked by the Cardinal Institute to do interviews about the Arizona Empowerment Scholarship Account program. She was then invited by them to West Virginia to interview and report on the Hope Scholarship potentially getting passed through the legislature, but it unfortunately did not pass. One year later, the Hope Scholarship was passed, so Jenny started trying to get vendors from Arizona to start servicing West Virginia families. This began her desire to expand Love Your School to West Virginia. Jenny ultimately would like to launch the program in every state.
