Rumi was a poet from Persia. He lived in the 13th century and was a scientist, scholar, philosopher and poet. His ideas and his poems surpass time, finding fans even in our complicated times. Moreover, his ideals and morality have advanced a whole new philosophy inside Islam - Sufism, or Tassawuf, the core ideas of which are the unity of humankind, true love for each other and spiritual altruism. His poems reflect on various issues from philosophy to psychology and theology, his references to Bible, ancient Greek mythology and Islamic thinkers show that he was one of the most educated people who has ever existed. His poem “A true person is my desire” reflects on the soul-searching of a philosopher, who tries to find a true, good, virtuous person, much like Diogen.

This is a poem written by Georgian poet Tician Tabidze who was later murdered by the order of Josef Stalin (Jugashvili). Tabidze writes to a woman he loved and describes how he feels about the prison called Ananuri. The prison has become a place of suffering for many people who were labeled as unworthy by the Soviet Union. The translation is done by the host of this podcast, Ilia Chankotadze.
