As we take a deep dive into Genesis 3, we see how Satan charms us to give him access to our lives. And although our disobedience results in consequences far out of our control. God has made a way for us to be redeemed through His Son, Jesus.

Eve: Charm'd by Forbidden Fruit

During this 6 part series of podcasts, we are going to discover that the world has absolutely nothing that can even begin to compare with what God has for us. By studying the examples of women in the Bible we will learn to recognize the deceptive “charms” that the devil dangles in front of us and then develop spiritual disciplines that will enable us to hold out for God’s best.

My prayer is that we will take action steps that will trigger a change in our cravings. And rather than be driven by the desires of the flesh, we will learn to be satisfied with the wisdom, power, love and plans of God.

Then, as we exchange the counterfeit for what is real…we will add insult to injury as we battle against Satan’s attacks and take the very things that he charm’d us with—and allow God to redeem those things so that they become opportunities for our lives to SHINE for others.

We wrap up our conversation with Mikel and Kaleigh in this episode. On this podcast my mom talks about a lot of things—mostly prayer but also spiritual warfare, parenting us, her adult kids —even though we might not need it as much as she thinks we do, she also shares what it’s like be a “church lady” in an increasingly post-Christian world. And don’t get me started on church ladies!

This is the place where mom admits that she contemplates things that are too wonderful to comprehend and where she shares interviews with people whose lives have greatly influenced hers. Just wait til you hear the interviews she did with my sister and me!

Mostly she wants to remind us that no matter what we’re going through, “God’s Got This!”

I’m Mikel McCoy and this is my mom’s podcast.

As a pastor's wife and mother of PK's I have often wondered at the unique blessings and challenges the life of ministry creates for us and our children. In this season when the church is being challenged, it's good to hear from those whose lives have been most affected by it. Leighann has invited her daughters Mikel and Kaleigh to share their reflections of what it was like growing up PKs.

I know we can't really even begin to get inside the mind and heart of another person, especially one that we disagree with--but, with enough research we can gain insight into what they might be thinking and feeling. In this episode Leighann shares what might be going on inside the people you love who are deconstructing their faith. This is part 2 of our 3 part series on deconstruction.

As a reminder, I postponed the publishing of this series until now (February rather than November). As it turns out, this series is a great segway into the exciting new podcast my daughter Kaleigh/Selah and I are doing together called "Love works. (HARD)" She and I are preparing to launch this new podcast together where we will share what we've learned throughout the tumultuous journey her deconstruction has taken us on. That's not all we're going to talk about, but it is going to be our starting point.

If you know people who are in the deconstruction process, and/or parents and other family members they are leaving in their wake please share these episodes with them and invite them to join us when we launch our new podcast, "Love works! (HARD)."

Well, my friends...here's what's happening. I'm up to my ear lobes in creating content for a class Tom and I are teaching on Wednesday nights at our church. I thought it would be fun to video our daily lessons and post them for our class via email. It was in the process of posting these emails that I discovered that I've lost "day 3" so in an attempt to complete my task quickly, I decided to share "day 3" on my podcast platform. In this episode, Leighann is sharing an article she found online that offers interesting insight into the popularity of deconstruction in our culture today. The essence of the article is found in this statement: "So before you file divorce papers from the Christianity of your youth, know that doing so is in no way countercultural. Like marital divorce, it’s thoroughly acceptable and common. I want to suggest that the far more radical—and truly countercultural—choice isn’t to abandon Christian faith because it is maddening, difficult, and out of step with the contemporary zeitgeist.

The radical choice is to keep the faith."

The article is written by Brett McKraken and is available on the Gospel Coalition website: Deconversion is Not as Countercultural as You Think.

Rhonda has been my friend for many years, and we've reconnected through her frequent visits to Tennessee. Finding Sobriety on a Mountaintop The Phoenix

The Phoenix is another ministry Rhonda mentioned was where the only cost to participants is 48 hours sober. Their mission to help people stay sober in community with each other. "If you’re in recovery from substance use disorder and have the desire to live sober, we will help you find strength and a new community of friends to support your journey."

I took notes because Rhonda was saying so many great things; here are some of them:

"Get up, dress up, show up!" Advice given by another grieving parent.

"Satan wants to keep you in bed."

"Be in agreement with Me." What Rhonda heard God say to her while standing in the yard outside her daughter's apartment the morning she discovered she had died.

"People need to go to heaven and we need to help them get there." That's all the really matters here.

"People are so full of nonsense! Stop worrying about all the other stuff."

In this episode, Leighann and her husband Tom share what they have learned in their first decade of parenting adult children. While parenting adults can be challenging, you have everything you need to succeed. Listen and learn 5 of the most valuable things Tom and Leighann have learned in their journey.

5 Things We’ve Learned in This World of Parenting Adults

  1. It’s okay to be okay that they didn’t turn out the way you thought they would.
  2. Affirm who they are
  3. Be wide open to what God is doing in their lives (Isaiah 55:8-9)
  4. Enjoy the surprises (if you can).

  5. Don’t blame yourself for their challenges and failures.

  6. What good does that do?

  7. When did you ever set out to mess them up?
  8. Part of them being their own person…and might be God’s way of revealing Himself to them.

  9. Hold on for the ride (and sit some of it out).

  10. Not your job to rescue, protect, or intercede anymore

  11. Offer advice but ask first
  12. Sometimes you might want to look the other way

  13. Resign from being their teacher.

  14. They’ve graduated.

  15. Nothing you can tell them now that you haven’t already told them before.
  16. They might resent your pounding them with the truth.

  17. Love them (and their significant others) with no strings attached

  18. Remember when they were babies? Expect nothing more than what they gave you then.

  19. Don’t wait until—- to love them
  20. Express your love in ways that let them know there are no strings attached

Scriptures referenced are:

  1. Is God big enough to answer this prayer? Isaiah 40:28, Job 26:14, Psalms 147:5, 8:3-4 and 93:4

  2. Does God love me enough to answer this prayer? Romans 8:28-39, Ephesians 2:4-5, Zephaniah 3:17, Psalm 86:15 and John 3:16

  3. Can I trust Him? 2 Samuel 7:28, Psalm 13:5, 56:3, Isaiah 12:2, and John 14:1

Lyrics to the hymn, My Hope is Built on Nothing Less

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus' name

On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand

When darkness veils his lovely face
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil

His oath, his covenant, his blood
Supports me in the 'whelming flood
When all around my soul gives way
He then is all my hope and stay

On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand

When He shall come with trumpet sound
Oh may I then in Him be found
Dressed in his righteousness alone
Faultless to stand before the throne

On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand

On Christ the solid rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness

My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness

In this podcast Leighann shares the origins of Halloween and its many traditions. As Christ followers living in a post-Christian world, it’s important for us to know how we best represent Jesus as we interact with our community in this holiday season.

Samhain is the Celtic celebration of the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the winter.

Bonfires originated from the “bone fires” that were part of the Samhain festival because the bones of animal sacrifices were burnt in the large fires.

The goddess of agriculture in the Roman world was named Pomona.

Christians merged the celebration of All Saints Day into Samhain and the result was Allhallow-even as the “Eve of All Saints Day”

Scripture referenced in this podcast include:

Ephesians 5:11 “Take not part in the unfruitful works of darkness but expose them.”

Ephesians 4:27 “Give no opportunity to the devil.”

I Thessalonians 5:22 “Abstain from every form of evil.”

Romans 12:2 “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Galatians 5:21 “The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the life. I warn you as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Deuteronomy 18:9-12 “When you enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, do not learn to imitate the detestable ways of the nations there. Let no one be found among you who sacrifices their son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft, or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord.”

Mark 16:15 “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.”

Matthew 28:18-20 “And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Hebrews 13:16 “Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.”

John 15:16 “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.”

Ideas of ways you might redeem Halloween:

  1. Circle up and pray for your neighbors before you go out. Ask God to give you opportunities to share Jesus with them.
  2. Give out the BEST candy and include a kid friendly gospel tract with it.
  3. Prepare treats for adults so that you have time to interact and have conversations with them.
  4. Follow up Halloween with a harvest gift of some kind and deliver that before Thanksgiving.

In this Episode, Leighann takes it way back to a study she wrote in 2007, Pray Right!. She talks about praying in Jesus Name, and Amen. Its about how to seal the envelope and put the stamp on the letter in the mailbox and on its way. However, there is so much more to these phrases and we want to understand how much more these two phrases mean. We want to apply these words to our prayers but to also apply their meaning to our prayers. Names mean something! In Jesus' Name. Amen. Let's dive in!

View Details

In this podcast Leighann covers when it is right or wrong to pray 'your will be done'. We have to remember these things

Most of us grow in our prayer lives to understand God in this progression of faith...

  1. God is able to do anything!

  2. God wants me to exercise faith.

  3. Faith is being certain that God hears me when I pray.

But this is where we get stuck. From this point forward we create our understanding of how prayer works like this,

  1. God loves me very much and wants what is best for me.

  2. I can pray, and ask God to give me what I want but only God knows if that's what's best for me, so the best I can do is hope He will respond in a way that is good, and that I can trust His answer even if it isn't what I really want.

In other words, "I will pray for that mountain to be moved and if it be God's will He will move it. If not, well, at least I feel better about dealing with it because now I can accept that it's a mountain God wants me to face."

  1. Thank God for prayer because I find great comfort in sharing my concerns with Him.

Pleases be sure to check out Leighann's blog post that covers this same subject here.

Leighann references the below scriptures:

Matthew 6:10

John 4:34

Luke 22:42

Matthew 26:42

This episode is all about overcoming doubt. Doubt can be a driving force and we need to believe that God is able and worthy of our faith in Him.

Leighann References these verses:

Psalm 37:23

Psalm 46:10

Mark 11:22-25

1 John 5:14-15

In this episode of the Prayer Clinic podcast Leighann shares a message on how we can pray the promise of God and believe them! She shows you how the character of God supports His promises, how to make the promises work for you and for those you're praying with, and mostly how to know when God's kept His promise to you.

Then the Lord said to me, “You have seen well, for I am watching[a] over my word

to perform it.” Jeremiah 1:12

How the Character of God Impacts the Promises of God:

Andrew Murray, “There is something more necessary than the effort to exercise faith in each separate promise that comes to our attention. That is the cultivation of a trustful attitude toward God—the habit of always thinking of Him, of His ways and of His works, with bright confident hopefulness. In such soil alone the individual promises take root and grow up.”

God is FAITHFUL.

God is HONEST.

God is RELIABLE.

God is CERTAIN TO DO WHAT HE SAYS HE WILL DO.

How the Promises of God Declare the Presence of God “The LORD directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.”

Psalm 37:23 NLT

When you pray the promises you are inviting the presence and power of God to enter into the details of your life and take control of the circumstances. You are trusting Him to do what He knows is best, and to reveal Himself to you and to those around you as He does.

God is eager to release and demonstrate His power on the earth.

How to take God’s promises and make them work for you (and others)

Here are 3 steps to making the promises work for you and those you are praying with.

  1. Embrace an all or nothing mindset.

“Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.” Psalm 73:25

  1. Be Surrendered and Satisfied.

Surrender definition: cease resistance and submit to authority.

To be satisfied in surrender is to shout AMEN! (SO BE IT!) to the glory of God on this side or our answered prayers!

“For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.” 2 Corinthians 1:20 NIV

  1. Cultivate an Attitude of Gratitude

When you cultivate an attitude of gratitude your eyes are opened to how God’s promises fit into your life. You begin to see what God is already doing and you fuel your faith regarding what He’s about to be doing!

How to Know When God’s Kept His Promise to You God kept His promise to you the minute He made it.

God doesn’t heckle you.

God doesn’t mess with you.

Instead, God challenges you to take the promises He’s given you no hold fast to them but holding tight to Him.

God Himself promises to keep His promises!

Psalm 145:13, “The LORD is faithful to all His promises and loving toward all He has made.”

Joshua 21:45, “Not one of the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.”

Lamentations 2:17a, “The Lord has done what he planned; he has fulfilled his word, which he decreed long ago…”

Philippians 1:6, “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

And, Jeremiah 1:12, “The Lord said to me, ‘You have seen correctly, for I am watching over my word to perform it.’”

Let’s not just pray for our patrons. Let’s pray with confidence knowing that He who promised is faithful.

God’s Got This!

Two Mary’s with Chris Adams and Simone Monroe

In episode 7 of our Truth about Women podcast, Chris Adams and Simone Monroe join Leighann to discuss two significant women in the earthly life of Jesus; his mother, Mary and his devoted follower, Mary Magdalene. What makes this episode rich is the century of combined women’s ministry experience that these women bring to the conversation.

Just a bit about these two Mary’s: Throughout our Truth about Women series we’ve talked about God’s design for women. We’ve recognized that what God has in mind and what the world thinks God has in mind are very different. If we allow the Bible to be our authority on the “truth about women” we discover that God promoted women, valued women and gave women a voice throughout their journey in biblical times. In fact, He used women in significant ways both at the beginning and at the end of Jesus’ earthly ministry. These two Mary’s…Mary, the mother of Jesus and Mary Magdalene who had the honor of sharing the news of Jesus’ resurrection are proof that God views women as image bearers of Himself, and full partners in the advancement of His Kingdom work.

Meet Chris Adams: Chris is an author, speaker, blogger, and women’s ministry consultant. She retired in 2017 after serving over 22 years as Women’s Ministry Specialist at LifeWay Christian Resources, Nashville, Tennessee. Chris helped pioneer women’s ministry as we know it today and compiled three women’s leadership books: Women Reaching Women: Beginning and Building a Growing Women’s Ministry, Transformed Lives: Taking Women’s Ministry to the Next Level, and Women Reaching Women in Crisis. Prior to her employment at LifeWay she was the special ministries coordinator at Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler, Texas overseeing women’s ministry and missions education. When Chris is not consulting, speaking to women, or training women’s ministry leaders, you can find her reading, with family or spending time at the beach. She married Pat in 1971 and they have twin daughters, two sons in law, 7 grandchildren, 7 bonus grands, 4 great grands, and a 7-pound blind Yorkie named Mo.

She holds a master’s in leadership and has served as Women’s Minister on church staffs, a pastors’ wife of 20 years, a leadership consultant in both the secular and church world, and a Women’s Trainer with LifeWay for more than 30 years. She is a Bible teacher, a retreat and conference speaker, and has recently released her first book, Own Your Everyday Influence with co-author Bobi Ann Allen. As the mother of 2 adult sons and their amazing spouses, her most cherished role is that of Mimi to 9 her grandchildren.

The story of the woman at the well can be found in John 4.

I found this online about the plight of women in society during Jesus’ day:

“What brought about this drastic change from the esteem women had in the times of the Hebrew Scriptures to their near exclusion from society by the era of the New Testament? Very likely, this degraded view of a woman’s role was imported from Greek thought. The similarities between the Hellenistic and Talmudic views of women are remarkable. Through the influence of their heathen neighbors, the rabbis slowly relegated women to their first-century seclusion. As evidenced in the paragraphs above, these gender norms were not based on the Tanakh or Jewish culture, but on Greek and Roman household codes that were widespread throughout their empires and occupied lands.”

The story of the woman caught in adultery can be found in John 8.

In this episode, Leighann takes a look at 2 troubling passages in the Old Testament that people might use to support their argument that accuses God of being a misogynist. Through what she learned in a workshop she listened to on the Gospel Coalition website, Leighann is able to declare with certainty that God is NOT a Misogynist. As you hear this episode on our summer series, “The Truth about Women” you will be amazed at the mercy and goodness of God and encouraged by the value He places on women.

This podcast content came from Mary Willson’s workshop titled “Is God a Misogynist?” You can listen to it here on the Gospel Coalition website.

Psalm 18:33-35

It is God who arms me with strength and makes my way perfect. 33 He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he enables me to stand on the heights. 34 He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. 35 You give me your shield of victory, and your right hand sustains me; you stoop down to make me great.

Quote regarding God’s response to “the tragedy of human transgression:”

“The pervasive sin, distortion, brokenness and abuse of power, including misogynistic oppression in our world are effects of human rebellion against God. The painful situations described in the Scriptures relating to poor treatment of women reflect the tragedy of human transgression. Therefore, any action God takes to curb and/or liberate a person from such sin and brokenness exalts His mercy.”

Quote regarding biblical law:

“Biblical law, in part, functions to restrain sin within a fallen world rather than to create an ethical system for a perfected, sinless humanity within a perfected sinless world.”

Two troubling passages of Scripture we took a look at:

  1. Deuteronomy 21:10-14

a. God’s law emphasized responsibilities of the powerful rather than rights

b. God’s law recognizes the personhood of the vulnerable

c. God’s law is concerned with covenant relationships

  1. Numbers 5:11-21

a. God’s law guards the community from defilement by upholding the marriage covenant.

b. God’s law protected women from human judgment (no witness).

c. God’s law allowed the woman to be innocent until (miraculously) proven guilty where the code of Hamarati practiced “trial by ordeal” where the accused would have had to have been miraculously saved from the ordeal in order to be proven innocent.

2 Timothy 4:2-5

Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage--with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

“Though feminism rightfully calls for the end of male domination and abuse, and for equal rights for women, it is vital to get to the root of the distortion — that our focus in life, as man or woman, must not be simply to satisfy our own ego or needs, but to serve G-d. True women’s liberation does not mean merely seeking equality within a masculine world, but liberating the divine feminine aspects of a woman’s personality and using them for the benefit of humankind.” https://www.meaningfullife.com/women-men-different-but-equal/

In this episode Leighann shares 5 strategies Satan uses to deceive people who enter into the deconstruction process. She then shares specific ways you can pray for the people you love who are deconstructing their faith.

Here is the link to Sam Landrith’s message, “The Truth about Deconstruction” at Thompson Station Church on May 22, 2022.

5 Strategies Satan uses are what I call a “ruse.” They have truth in them, but the truth is distorted in the telling. The distortion works because it appeals to pride in self. And even though the things he says are painted with truth, the core of the deception is evil. At the core of Christianity you have a loving heavenly Father who wants to save you. At the core of what the devil is dishing out you have a wicked fallen angel who wants to destroy you.

2 Kings 6:8-17

Now the king of Aram was at war with Israel. After conferring with his officers, he said, "I will set up my camp in such and such a place." The man of God sent word to the king of Israel: "Beware of passing that place, because the Arameans are going down there." So the king of Israel checked on the place indicated by the man of God. Time and again Elisha warned the king, so that he was on his guard in such places. This enraged the king of Aram. He summoned his officers and demanded of them, "Tell me! Which of us is on the side of the king of Israel?" "None of us, my lord the king," said one of his officers, "but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your bedroom." "Go, find out where he is," the king ordered, "so I can send men and capture him." The report came back: "He is in Dothan." Then he sent horses and chariots and a strong force there. They went by night and surrounded the city. When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. "Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?" the servant asked. "Don't be afraid," the prophet answered. "Those who are with us are more than those who are with them." And Elisha prayed, "Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see." Then the Lord opened the servant's eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.
