NOTHING IS COOLER THAN THE BLUE COOL OF LOU DONALDSON AND HIS CONGA ERA SOUNDS, AND THE GOSPEL BLUES SOUL OF LOCKJAW IN HIS EARLY YEARS!
Both these players fill a wonderful niche in the history of jazz... Both are somewhat over looked by todays vinyl community. This is a MISTAKE. Both players touch the very soul of this music and embody the sounds of Black America and it's reflections on life in America in the 50s!!!
MILES CONSTANT NEED TO APPEAR CUTTING EDGE, leads him to some dark places.... Donald Byrds far more enjoyable efforts from that same space in time! This is NO DOUBT controversial ... and there are many who don't even want to hear this opinion. But Not all of Miles work is flawless!? It's a hard listen for me nowadays and if one is honest ... it can be painful as well! Urania records was a small label that I share some background on as well!

(audio from episode #415) I share with you some of the recent additions to my jazz collection, and try to state these artists place within the JAZZ kingdom!! An intro to Tom Waits, who is a favorite artist of mine, with some jazz fringes to him!!
The great but some what controversial Jackie McLean... a look at his early body of work, on Prestige/ Blue Note and a few other small labels, and his some what mercurial discography, that weaves between Be Bop Hard Bop and the avant garde, often borrowing some from all sounds with out ever being immersed totally in one.
I touch on some philosophy and musings that I have touched on before, on my channel, but felt a new summary of these beliefs was om order!!
