What was childhood like for you? Were you allowed to be you? Authentically you? Were you shown love, kindness & care? Or did you feel worthless, abandoned, unsafe or worse? Our childhood experiences can set us on a path to a beautiful life or they can lead us on a lifelong journey to find the broken pieces & put ourselves back together. In these open & honest conversations I chat with everyday humans about the profound impact their parents had on their lives. To reduce generational trauma we must speak & share truth. If you love to connect with real & raw stories there is so much wisdom here.

Melissa Lyon West personifies strength and resilience like no other. From a young age, she was entangled in a cult, dominated by her father's controlling influence. Up until she turned thirty, every aspect of Melissa's life was dictated by strict rules. There was no room for personal choice in this cloistered environment where men held all the power, and women were relegated to a subservient role.
However, a series of events gradually chipped away at the foundation of her beliefs, leading Melissa to question the life she had been forced to lead. The turning point came when she boldly declared, "I'm not going to lie anymore." That single decision marked the beginning of her quest for truth, the catalyst for her healing journey.
With unwavering determination, Melissa embarked on a path to freedom, breaking free from the shackles of the cult's control. Every step she took brought her closer to reclaiming her autonomy, as she refused to be bound by oppressive rules any longer.
Now, our story finds Melissa at a pivotal moment in her life. Having endured a lifetime of conformity, she stands firm in her decision to sever ties with the cult once and for all. No longer willing to be part of something that stifles her spirit, Melissa takes a courageous stand and embraces her newfound freedom.

Do you remember being a teen? For many of us, it was a tough time. You're no longer a kid and you are not an adult either. Our culture has us believe that teens are trouble, but in reality a teen's brain is wired to start to individuate. We are not supposed to follow our parents and do as they say forever. Teens are meant to question, change and grow. Teen Coach Lainie Liberti, works with teens to help them have a better experience than she did. Lainie’s mom was narcissistic and her teen years were filled with anger, loneliness and self sabotaging behaviours. We are left with so many deeply limiting beliefs about ourselves from childhood and Lainie wants us to understand it is totally possible to reprogram those limiting beliefs and heal the generational wounds that have been passed down to us.

In Part 2 of Dr Constance Scharff's story we hear about her incredible road to recovery. Please listen to Part 1 first to understand the full story.
Dr Constance Scharff grew up in a home where the trauma from her abusive father saw her turn to alcohol at age 11. Somehow she understood that alcohol would negate her need to feel anything. By the time she was in college, Constance was drinking two litres of hard liquor a day. She believed at this point she didn’t have long to live and friends said she would not make it through her twenties. As a small child, Constance was abandoned and uncared for. She was lost in a family who did not protect her or keep her safe. She believed she drank because she was scared of her father, but when her father died, she realised she couldn’t stop. Dr Constance Scharff is the Founder of the Institute for Complementary and Indigenous Mental Health Research, an author and speaker and since becoming sober 25 years ago, she is passionate about the topics of addiction, recovery, mental health and sharing her story. What does child grooming look like? Jan Broberg was just twelve years old when she was abducted by a friend of the family. Her abductor's entire life revolved around planning and executing this kidnapping. He manipulated everybody... Jan, her family, her sisters, the church community. They all believed he was a good guy. But he was a sociopath and he went to extreme lengths to achieve what he set out to do, groom a child to sexually abuse her. One in four girls and one in six boys have been sexually assaulted by someone who is familiar to them. These are terrifying statistics and it is the reason Jan continues to share her story to bring awareness to how deeply manipulative and easily missed this abuse can be.

How does the enneagram help you discover your true self? I am chatting with Samantha Mackay, Enneagram Coach, who says your personality is actually a defence mechanism that is hiding your true self. You are not your personality. Your personality is a psychological structure designed to keep all the trauma and wounds hidden and protected from view. As a child this is an important survival strategy. As an adult we have the capacity to function differently, however we have forgotten that we are using these survival strategies because it has become our normal. The enneagram tells us which survival strategies we are using so that we can break through these survival strategies, find our true selves and live as our true selves.

He would sit alone at lunch, he would be picked last in gym class, and life became pretty dark. Andrew started fantasising about suicide and revenge and he sat in this victim mentality for years. Until one day he decided he really needed to figure this out. He wanted a good life. He wanted to be happy. He tried every modality, every type of healing. And after a decade of making some progress but not breaking through, Andrew created Cinesomatics. Cinesomatics uses video and movement to help you see the unconscious patterns that run your life and it teaches you how to face, feel and heal those patterns through your body. It’s fascinating!

Dark Night Of The Soul
NEW On the Blog this week 17 Signs You Are A People Pleaser
WHAT HAPPENS when your mother gets upset about something you supposedly said and all of a sudden you see your entire life in a new light? All the years of trauma and abuse you have blocked out come flooding back and your life changes. Suddenly you recall a thousand times your mother behaved the same way and you accepted it. You were numb to it. The times she didn’t listen, the abuse you told her about and she ignored. The manipulation, the gaslighting. Everything becomes so clear and you can’t stand to be near her, you can’t see her, you’re done. And all because, in that moment, when you were ready to apologise once again, you realised you were still being manipulated and something desperately needed to change.

What happens to us when we are disconnected from our parents? Karina grew up without a father, and with a mother who was emotionally disconnected. Karina was essentially parenting herself. Karina left home as soon as she finished high school and realised it was her own responsibility to create the life she dreamed for herself. But growing up without a connection to either parent, Karina found herself gravitating towards men that she couldn't connect with either. Karina is now living a beautiful life, selling luxury real estate, and has written a book called Choosing Magic where she tells her story of growing up and surviving life with no real parenting and how she has been able to turn her life around. Golden child syndrome. Manipulation. Lack of boundaries. Parentification. Cycles of abuse. Love bombing. The trauma of human trafficking.
On the Blog this week, A Big Warm Hug - The Benefits Of Sleeping With A Weighted Blanket For Trauma Survivors https://howmyparentsraisedme.com/blog-childhood-trauma/
There are more than 25 million victims of human trafficking worldwide on any given day and 20% of those are children.
But this episode is not about statistics. This is about a human life. What happens to a child growing up that leads them to become a victim of human trafficking? Lena grew up in Ukraine in a very unsafe, dysfunctional home. One of the most common reasons a child ends up being trafficked is a dysfunctional family. A child who is not protected and connected.

I Am Anxious All The Time! How Can I Minimise My Anxiety? is available now on the HEAL blog https://howmyparentsraisedme.com/blog-childhood-trauma/
Bodily autonomy simply means my body is for me; my body is my own. It’s not something most of us were ever educated about as kids. Tom grew up in an evangelical christian family who believed, as many within the church and also outside of the church do, that parenting includes spanking children. Spanking has been accepted as the only kind of discipline that will produce godliness and "well-trained" children. For Tom Spanking completely overwhelmed his nervous system and along with the fear and pain, there came arousal. It was the most horrible mixture of shame, pain, fear and confusion.

Growing up was confusing for Lisa. Her father was living with a mental illness and her Mom was in denial and struggling to cope. Her father would try to condition Lisa into believing ideas that were not necessarily what the rest of the world believed. And Lisa was subjected to community abuse and nicknames simply for being his daughter. This chaotic home life led to Lisa's 27 year marriage to an older man she believed loved her, but looking back Lisa now understands she mistook control, manipulation and fathering, for love. Lisa has been on a huge healing journey and she now works with her clients to help them break the trauma cycle, because it is only through awareness and understanding the cycles of trauma that we can change the lives of ourselves and our children.

What happens when your Mom was never given nurturing, love or care, because her mother passed at a young age? What happens when your Dad grew up in an authoritarian household where kids didn’t have a voice and must follow all the rules? The combined trauma from each of those family lines will be passed down to you because your mother and father were unaware of their trauma or the effect it would have on you. And their inability to acknowledge or express emotions becomes your emotional neglect. You will carry grief and abandonment. You may be a people pleaser and have low self worth. You may experience depression or a feeling of being stuck.

Shorina was only 14 when she left home to move in with her 18 year old boyfriend. This older boy was highly manipulative. He isolated Shorina and made her believe that nobody else cared and that if she left him, she would be completely alone. Shorina didn't believe that even her mom cared, even though her poor mom was beside herself with worry. Shorina found herself alone, self harming and suicidal and went through some very dark times. When Nathan Spiteri was 8 years old his life changed forever.
Nathan was a happy kid from a good family but an event at his local swimming pool on a hot summers afternoon changed Nathan’s life forever. Attacked by a pedophile, this one sickening event turned into manipulation, brainwashing and Stockholm syndrome that lasted for five years. Nathan’s eight year old self believed the lies and manipulation. He became very detached from family and friends, very quiet and solitary and more and more attached to his abuser.
For many years Nathan never told a soul and kept everything deeply hidden as his life spiralled out of control and into drugs, alcohol and other destructive behaviours.
Nathan has written a memoir called Toy Cars. You can purchase your copy here https://amzn.to/3Px91z5
The statistics for child sexual abuse are terrifying and Nathan has been working for years now to get himself to a place where he can use his story to educate and inform others, and bring about much needed change.

Dr Reshie Joseph seemingly had it all before his life fell to pieces. Reshie grew up in England. He had an upper middle class upbringing, attended the best schools and universities. He graduated medical school and was essentially living an incredible life. But within nine years of graduating, Reshie was living as a street junkie in a London bus shelter...how does that even happen?
That’s the exact question Reshie asked himself, once he got sober and drug free. Reshie couldn’t understand how he found himself in such a downward spiral, and he started looking for answers. It wasn’t until Reshie uncovered research around the connection between childhood trauma, addiction and other behaviours that he really began to understand his own story.

If you’ve ever struggled with someone in your life and it’s just been confusing and different to any other relationship and you can’t quite put your finger on what’s going on or why and you feel like you are living in a parallel universe, you may be dealing with a covert narcissist. This narcissist type is not big, loud and confident. They are very low key and yet highly manipulative all at the same time. You may receive microscopic doses of love and then as soon as you see the love, and as soon as you begin to lean into the love, it's taken away again and it’s just living in a state of confusion.

Melissa was born to parents who ran, what Melissa now understands, was a fundamentalist christian cult. The rules were so extreme that from three years of age Melissa believed her heart was black, she was a sinner, she was broken and evil and if she begged god to save her, he would wash her clean and take her to heaven. As a woman her purpose was to have as many babies as possible. Her position as a woman was at the bottom of the food chain. But one day Melissa saw a tiny crack of light from the outside world and she started asking questions. Tracy had a mother who was absent, physically and emotionally. Her mother didn't connect with her, even as a tiny baby. As a kid, Tracy's mother never questioned where she was or what she was doing. She just didn't care. And the trauma from those experiences made Tracy very sick. Over many years Tracy tried everything to get better. It wasn't until Tracy found somatic experiencing therapy that she was able to heal. Somatic experiencing is healing trauma through the body, as opposed to talk therapy which is healing via the brain. The psychological effects of controlling parents.
What happens when your entire world is controlled? Micah grew up in a very controlled, religious environment. Church was three times a week. Discipline was militant in style and there were so many rules and beliefs that Micah had begun obsessively washing her hands by the age of 5. Later she developed an eating disorder and flip flopped between dissociation and hypervigilance. This is an insight into the trauma of a father passed down to his daughter as she fought for control over every aspect of her being.

What is epigenetics?
A fascinating look into how much genetics and trauma affect our lives.
PANIC AWAY ACCESS HERE https://af3924jj23i46gadigvxkmhl98.hop.clickbank.net
Johanna Lynn works in the emerging field of epigenetics. When you have traumatic experiences, that trauma can leave a chemical mark on your genes, which can then be passed down to future generations. This mark doesn't cause a genetic mutation, but it does alter the way that gene is expressed. This alteration is not genetic. It is epigenetic. Not only do parents pass down their DNA, it’s what happened to your grandparents & parents and the affect of those experiences on their DNA that is passed down to us.

Generational trauma examples
Generational trauma is the traumatic events that have a ripple effect across generations. What happens to one person has an impact on their children and that impact continues to affect generation after generation until somebody sees it and heals it. Today I am sharing a quick chat with Nita which clearly shows how trauma is expressed and shared through families. Nita’s Mom went through incredible trauma as a child and her feelings of abandonment meant she was never able to connect with Nita’s needs and emotions. As a family they never acknowledged the terrible things that happened and they never spoke about anything. The belief was, that if we ignore it, it will go away and so Nita abandoned her own needs and the cycle is perpetuated.

What are the signs of a narcissistic mother?
As kids we have no idea that what we are experiencing is abuse. We can't label a mother a narcissist because she is simply our mother and we don't know anything different. I have heard from so many women who never understood the toxicity of a parent until decades later.
Alex's mother was narcissistic. Subject to abuse and manipulation her entire life, Alex felt that SHE was the problem. It wasn't until, as an adult, Alex found herself in a highly toxic relationship and whilst looking for answers, discovered that not only was this boyfriend a narcissist but recognised all the signs in her mother too.

How to support a friend emotionally.
We all know we should support a friend or family member who is struggling, but what should we actually do for them?
So much of the time we feel helpless in how we can offer assistance when it's clear somebody we care about isn’t coping. But how can we help?
The answer is often very simple. Actively listening. Actively inviting that person to share what they are going through and hearing them.
The value of having one person in your life that cares enough to listen can never be underestimated.
This quick chat with Aunia Khan is a look into the power of that one person. When you are a teen and you have lived your entire life in trauma and you have nobody there for you, Aunia talks about how life-saving the connection with her school counsellor was. How it gave her a sense of safety that she felt nowhere else in her life and how as a kid in trauma she still, to this day, feels grateful for the time and energy this man was able to invest in her at her lowest point.
Aunia Khan is an incredible artist and you can find her here at Create For Healing https://www.instagram.com/createforhealing/ and here https://www.instagram.com/auniakahn/
Signs of unhealthy friendships
I came across Erin Falconers book How To Break Up With Your Friends and I thought it would be so valuable to chat with Erin about adult friendships. The way we are raised by our parents, the trauma we are exposed to and the way our parents interacted within their own friendships, has a profound impact on how we create and maintain friendships throughout our lives. Friendships are critical to our overall health and wellbeing and yet we are never given any real guidance around friendships. And then if a friendship is past it's use-by date, how do we go about breaking up with a friend? There should be no shame in needing to let go of a friendship because it is no longer serving us and Erin has some great tips on navigating our adult friendships.
Please purchase your copy of How To Break Up With Your Friends here https://www.amazon.com/How-Break-Your-Friends-Establishing/dp/1683648137 you can read first chapters of the book here https://www.pickthebrain.com/blog/how-to-break-up-with-your-friends/ and you can find Erin on Instagram here https://www.instagram.com/erinfalconer/

What is codependency in a relationship?
This quick chat with Shannon is a great insight into what happens to kids who grow up in a chaotic home environment. Shannon’s grandfather was abusive to her mother and her grandmother. And Shannon was a constant witness to the abuse. She took on the role of taking care of everybody. And that’s where co-dependency begins. Kids in homes where there is abuse or addiction issues learn to neglect their own needs in order to meet the needs of those around them. They become the primary caregiver to the adults in their lives. They find emotional fulfilment through making others feel happy, regardless of their own needs. The focus is always on other people and they have difficulty expressing emotions or what they deeply need because they’ve not learnt to look out for themselves in that way.
If you are struggling with co-dependency seek professional help so that you can begin to recognise the signs of codependency, learn how to set healthy boundaries, overcome people pleasing and learn how to reconnect with who you are.

Can you ever recover from narcissistic abuse?
Melany grew up with a mom who gave her everything she needed. Except for love. Except for care. Except for kindness. Melany’s mother was narcissistic and whilst all of Melany's basic needs were met there was abuse, abandonment and gaslighting. There was a complete lack of love. And whenever Melany pushed back, her family members believed that she was to blame. Melany's life fell apart for a while as she searched endlessly for how to heal. It wasn't until she got to the heart of her emotional wounding that she was really able to turn her life around.
Melany is now an Emotional Healing Coach. She gets to the absolute core of your emotional wounding so that you can heal at the deepest level. Melany is an expert, having been on this journey herself, and she will lead you back to truth, love and healing. low self-esteem low self-confidence people pleasing
MARK grew up desperate for love. He wanted nothing more than for his mom to wrap her arms around him and tell him "I love you". But it didn't happen. And when he was just five years old Mark's Dad told him "Don't call me Dad". What happens when a child feels unloved? This is a story that will strike a chord with many listeners. It's a story of growing up without that feeling of love and connection with a parent that we desperately want and need.

Harrowing true story of the Broberg family. A Friend Of The Family
Jan Broberg was kidnapped by her neighbour, Robert Berchtold, under the watch of her parents.
Robert Berchtold was a sociopath, perhaps even a psychopath. He lived in a fantasy world and he manipulated EVERYBODY. His entire life revolved around planning and executing this kidnapping and then incredibly, after they were caught and brought home, he abducted Jan a second time.
One in four girls and one in six boys have been sexually assaulted by someone who is familiar to them. Only three percent are attacked by what you would call a stranger. For ninety-seven percent of victims, it’s someone that is acquainted with the child or with the family. These are terrifying statistics and it is the reason Jan continues to share her story to try and bring awareness to how deeply manipulative and easily missed this abuse can be.
Please support Jan in her quest to educate on this important topic by purchasing her book, The Jan Broberg Story https://www.amazon.com/Jan-Broberg-Story-Abducted-Brainwashed/dp/1957616113/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=jan+broberg&qid=1663002808&sr=8-1 Listen to her podcast, The Jan Broberg Show www.thejanbrobergshow.com and if it resonates, you can find her community for child abuse survivors, called Thrivivors here www.janbrobergfoundation.org
Also just released, is a new Peacock limited series called A Friend of the Family starring Anna Paquin, Colin Hanks and Jake Lacey which tells Jan's entire story over 9 episodes. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=384474613832473&ref=sharing

Repressed anger. Not allowed to be angry.
KIMBERLY grew up in a house where anger wasn't modelled.
Her parents never fought. If she was upset or angry her parents would ignore her. By the time she got to college she didn't recognise anger or how to express it and she behaved in ways that appeared strange to others.
Growing up in an environment where anger is frowned upon means you never learn how to express what you are feeling. And being unable to express yourself can lead to a lack of self worth and confidence.
In this quick chat episode, Kimberly explains how she is learning to value herself by giving herself permission to put up boundaries and express what she needs.

What is narcissistic manipulation?
Narcissists exert control over others by manipulating their emotions. They thrive on it.
Dr Melanie Salmon's mother was a narcissist and when Melanie was a child her mother told her a secret. A secret she was to tell nobody. And this secret allowed her mother to exert control over Melanie and her emotions for many years!

What are the signs of a toxic family?
Bailey is only twenty. And she is right there in the middle of all the confusion and all the hurt from childhood.
When Bailey was born her mom wasn't able to be there for her. And the grief of just that one piece of the puzzle is enough to change a person’s entire life.
But then there was more grief, and more heartbreak. There was abuse and total abandonment and absolutely no understanding from anyone in her life, of why Bailey was becoming more and more out of control.
Bailey is an incredible young woman. She is smart and kind. And throughout everything that has happened it's clear that all she needed, was love, care and kindness. And nobody was able to give her that.

Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Trauma is confusing. We can spend years of our life having no idea we are suffering from childhood trauma.
It can be so severe that we might actually be experiencing a whole range of mental and physical health effects from it, but because it has always been our normal to feel this way, it can lead us down a path of just using a million different coping mechanisms to get through.
In this quick chat episode, I am hearing from Sara who is a CPTSD Survivor, about how to spot complex trauma symptoms, what dissociation feels like and what are flashbacks.

Can you heal from childhood neglect?
For much of Mandy's childhood, she was completely alone. Abandoned by a mother who was working and trying to put food on the table, Mandy was left in some very unsafe situations. And it got worse. Mandy was a little girl lost. She had absolutely nobody on her side. And when Mandy decided it was time to finally speak up for herself the consequences were dire. Mandy has been through more trauma than most humans will ever understand. At her lowest point she was suicidal and yet her spirit was strong. Mandy spent years in talk therapy but felt she was not healing in the way she wanted to. When Mandy finally sought out Somatic Experiencing Therapy, which is healing through the body, she was able to spend a couple of years really processing the anger that resulted from her boundaries being constantly broken, of not being cared for, of not being seen or protected. Mandy says spending two years in Somatic Experiencing was equal to twenty years worth of talk therapy. TRIGGER WARNING THIS EPISODE CONTAINS THEMES OF SUICIDE AND SEXUAL ABUSE*

Spanking Children
Over the generations, hitting children has been the go-to method of keeping them 'under control'. Punishing and controlling instead of teaching and guiding. What are the effects of physical abuse on a small child? How does it affect them later in life? LeeAnn Summerfield tells her story of growing up in a physically and emotionally abusive household and how those effects last a lifetime.

How do you reach out to a friend who is struggling?
It takes just ONE person to make a difference. ONE person to connect, understand, offer kindness, care and love.
When Amanda was 16 she was already at rock bottom. She had grown up in a home where she was abandoned by her mother and physically abused by her step-father. She had been suicidal and self-harming. She was taking drugs and alcohol and had run away from home. In this quick chat I am hearing how a kid who was totally lost, abandoned and alone, turned her life around through the kindness of ONE person.

How to heal from trauma.
Trauma affects everything. In this very important episode I am speaking with Jamie McCoy, Psychotherapist and Trauma Coach. In her twenties, Jamie was literally bed-ridden with brain fog, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and eventually receiving a diagnosis of Lyme disease. Jamie healed herself by healing her nervous system. If you experienced childhood trauma your nervous system was affected by that trauma. From your earliest days as a baby, if you were crying a lot and your parents didn't come to tend to you, hold that space for you or let you know they were there for you? You will have shut down and gone into a mobilised frozen state to protect yourself from that pain. And once you have shut down, your immune function is affected. Your digestion is affected. Everything goes into energy conservation mode. Everything is slowing down. And then over time, different neuronal connections you are supposed to make in your brain don't develop in an organised fashion. So the left and right parts of your brain aren't necessarily communicating as they should. And when that happens, you will have gaps in your development, a lower capacity for stress and the way you tolerate life changes in general.
You can work with Jamie by contacting her via her Instagram https://www.instagram.com/myintegrativetherapist/ and you should definitely take a look at her course The Nervous System Reset here https://www.myintegrativetherapist.com/apply

Who is most likely to sexually abuse a child?
Diane grew up on a farm. There were ponies and music lessons and she loved the animals and being outside in nature. Diane's parents were incredibly busy with four kids and running the farm and Diane felt she only got their attention when she was really good or really bad. Unseen and unheard Diane didn't feel love or connection as a child. And at the age of 12 a family member began to sexually abuse her. He told her they were in a secret relationship, he made her feel special and grown up and as a child, Diane believed what she was told. And she didn't tell anybody. It wasn't until many years later that Diane was able to share her secret and start getting help. This has been a long and difficult healing journey. 93% of perpetrators of CSA are known to the child. This is a staggering statistic. It is not men in white vans. It is most likely somebody within the family.

What trauma does to a child.
It shouldn't hurt to be a child. But it so often does. Children everywhere, just scraping by. Just surviving emotionally, physically, mentally. In chaotic homes. With traumatised parents, mentally ill parents. Parents who were narcissistic, drug addicted, alcoholic, abusive, manipulative, who didn’t care whether their child lived or died. Who never put them first.

How to overcome fatherlessness
Shalina was just 15 months old when her father left. And that moment changed her life forever. Shalina was now fatherless. And that was heartbreaking and traumatic and overwhelming. It changed what she believed about herself. She felt deeply abandoned, worthless and disconnected from so many things. And the same questions continued to haunt Shalina throughout her life... Why did he leave me? Why didn't he choose to stay? Did I do something wrong? Shalina has come so far since those younger struggles, but the hurt is palpable and real and raw. Fatherlessness comes in many forms and all of them are grief for what has been lost and what could have been.

Erin was abandoned in every possible way. From as far back as she can remember. By a mother who was cold and manipulative. She was neglected, unloved, controlled. She was never seen or heard. She was treated like a piece of trash. By her own mother. Erin says "I wanted to believe that I belonged. That somebody could love me or that I was worthy of being loved. And my mother made it so confusing for me because what was worthy of love one day, it wasn't the next. So I was constantly questioning how do I get that love? And with the cult I was like, so you're telling me that if I just do these things that I'm going to be loved and accepted? that's easy". Kids don't get drawn into a cult for no reason. They don't leave home for no reason. They don't live on the streets for no reason. Kids are looking for the love they are desperate for. This is Erin's story.

Megan was adopted at birth into a family where she felt loved and cared for. But from a very young age Megan was acutely aware that her situation was different. She knew her life had involved a transaction and her younger self was stuck in trying to understand what that meant. What was she worth? Did she offer value to her parents? And, like so many of us, Megan spent a lifetime not seeing her own value and allowing others to dictate her worth.

Teresa grew up in a family she describes as narcissistic. Growing up was hard. This family was all about appearances and Teresa was struggling big time. Struggling with what was expected of her. And struggling with being undiagnosed neurodivergent in a neurotypical world. Her parents had started down the path of getting her a diagnosis for autism but pulled out. Teresa believes her family felt the diagnosis wouldn't fit with the image they were trying to portray to the world. Her parents believed Teresa just needed to get involved with 'normal' things and she would be fine. In all those years Teresa was never able to be her true self. It was suffocating and damaging. Whether you are judging or being judged, JUDGEMENT is a deeply ingrained part of our lives. At every level. We are judged by others from a very young age. We are taught to judge. It is generational and so we barely even notice we are doing it. Judgement is destructive and it keeps us small and stops us from being our true selves. Let's create a judgement free world!

Who are you actually? Do you have any idea? Or are you living from a program of other people's expectations, judgements and trauma? Growing up in trauma can create a real disconnect from who you were born to be. You become trapped in layers of stuff that doesn't belong to you and it becomes so normal that you never discover who you really are. What you really think. What you really came here for. And living in that space also means you never experience real joy.

One of the most important things you will ever do for yourself is to put really strong boundaries in place in your life. It isn't easy if you were trained to people please and disregard your own needs. As kids we can be taught that we must be pleasing to a parent. We must always do as we are told and that our feelings and deepest needs are unimportant. We abandon what we need to be accepted and loved. So we don't see boundaries as a choice. Let's talk about how you can start pleasing yourself and getting your needs met in this episode.

When I started this podcast I wanted to bring awareness to childhood trauma and generational trauma because it is one of the least talked about topics. Because it's hard. Because it's scary, confronting, complex. What happens in families behind closed doors is terrifying. And I believe most of the mental health and chronic physical health conditions that plague our world come from our childhood trauma. Today I want you to know how much power you hold. How much power you hold in changing everything for your family, your community and the planet.

Jewels remembers the good times. As an only child living with her mom and a dad she adored, she remembers early childhood as a fun and happy time. But when Jewels was just 7 years of age the events of one night changed everything and her life was never the same again. What happens to a little girl when nobody is paying attention, nobody is loving her, nobody is listening to her, is frightening. And the journey she has been on was a fight for survival that would have crushed others. The toxic mom doesn't have to be angry and abusive. She can be absent and neglectful. She can be unloving, disconnected and cold. She can abandon you and barely speak to you. She can give you the silent treatment for days. And she can send you on a very self destructive path. Tracy's mom didn’t bond with Tracy as a baby and continued to neglect her throughout her life. Tracy has spent a lifetime feeling the effects of this abandonment, going off the rails as a teen and becoming a young single mom. Tracy now helps others to go no contact with toxic parents and shares somatic experiencing which has had a hugely positive impact on Tracy's life and something she is now teaching others.

Control can be at the very heart of a traumatic childhood. Parents with unhealthy and unattainable standards, unreasonable rules and regulations. Parents using punishments and controlling behaviour. Micah grew up in a very controlled, religious environment. Church was three times a week. Discipline was militant in style and there were so many rules and beliefs that Micah had begun obsessively washing her hands by age 5. She also became very controlled with food, absorbing the messages she was being given about what sort of a person you were if you ate too much. Such a difficult start for a little girl. Micah Stover is now a psychedelic guide and trauma midwife, working with the power of psychedelics to help others in trauma to go back and rescue that younger self and bring her home.

Anxiety is the uncontrollable and often irrational anticipation of future threats and one of the most commonly diagnosed mental health conditions. It is your brain working on overdrive to keep you safe from all the things your mind sees as threatening. And childhood trauma can play a huge part in whether you develop anxiety as an adult. Mireya Lopez was born to a very young mother who was unable to give her the love she needed and was absent for much of her life. Raised by a grandmother who was also unable to show any real love or affection, Mireya’s story is full of abandonment on many levels. By the time she was a teen, Mireya was sadly left with the feeling that she shouldn’t be here at all. Anxiety ran through Mireya’s life as a coping mechanism and as an adult she is still managing her anxiety daily. Mireya has an important story to share with you and some great tips on how to have a good day every day for anxiety sufferers.

Sean grew up in an extremely violent and chaotic environment. His father was alcoholic and abusive, his mum depressed. He remembers feeling no love at all growing up. Sean's mom was still a kid herself when she started having kids. By the age of 23 she had five children. And Sean's mom had come from a traumatic childhood and so had his Dad. Two children of trauma coming together, continuing the cycles of alcoholism, violence and abuse towards their eight children. Generational trauma is real and Sean has spent a lifetime suffering from its affects. Diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder Sean has struggled big time, including many suicide attempts. But he is now actively taking control back of his mental health and sharing his journey on his podcast You Me and BPD. Our chat begins this week and continues next week in Part 2.

Aunia had no voice. Surviving in a home heavy in generational trauma she felt completely unseen and unheard. Trauma at home and trauma at school. There was very little light or shade. Deep in trauma Aunia attempted to take her own life. By her twenties Aunia was living with an undiagnosed chronic illness. Forced to give up study she turned to art to get her through. To work through the trauma. To make sense of it all. Unable to come into contact with her beloved paint and pencils due to her illness she turned to digital art and flourished. And there were so many co-incidences in who she met and where her art took her that you can see the deep purpose in this journey. Our trauma is so often the link to our purpose and when you see all the things that Aunia is doing in the world it is so obvious this is what she came here to do. To bring beauty to the world and teach others how to heal through art and creativity and colour. Aunia Kahn is a multi-faceted creative entrepreneur and a globally awarded, collected, and exhibited artist/photographer, graphic/web designer, the host of the Create & Inspire Podcast, a published author, as well as a teacher and an inspirational speaker. For years her art was based on survival. Now, entering another phase of her life, her work has transitioned into a narrative of personal evolution and highlights how grateful she is to still be alive. Aunia is teaching us how to heal through art. Please come and hear what she has to say.

This is the story of growing up with a vulnerable narcissistic mother. The vulnerable narcissist isn't as obvious in the way they operate as other types of narcissists. They are more subtle. But the underlying control and guilt can become magnified once they feel you are slipping out of their control. So as Michaila grew up and became more independent, the behavior got worse and worse. Michaila speaks of the deep guilt and responsibility she felt for her mother, which she always saw as completely normal. The effects of a narcissistic mother can be lifelong and Michaila has been working through the layers and healing and has so much wisdom to share with you on this topic.
Michaila is a Maternal Narcissistic Abuse Recovery Coach. Please reach out to Michaila on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/mother_herselfandme/and facebook https://www.facebook.com/michaila.tyson.7/

The framed picture of the happy family. Mom, Dad and the kids. Living their best lives. Baby on Dad's knee. A wonderful family. That's what we present to the world anyway right? Because what goes on behind closed doors can be so different. Can be another story. So many children taught to show the world a happy face. To keep secrets. To save face. So many children trapped with no-one to talk to. Erika is a beautiful soul who has been through more than any human should. She was abused and beaten. By her step father. In her home. Where nobody came to help her. Nobody said "stop" "enough". Nobody took her hand and told her she was beautiful and worthy and lovable. Everything was hard. Erika moved to a new country and she didn’t look like the other girls. She didn’t know she was black. She just knew she was a person. And her realisation that her skin colour would determine the way people saw her is heartbreaking. And as she grew into a woman, Erika remembers desperately not wanting to get attention with clothes and all the things young girls want. Because attention was unsafe. Attention meant abuse. Erika is now a healing coach who is helping women who have been through trauma to heal and she has so much to share with us.

Did you know that childhood trauma can start as early as in the womb? Imagine that a young woman of eighteen becomes a mother and because of the short traumatic life she has lived, she has no idea how to connect with her own emotions, let alone those of a tiny baby. Because she abandoned herself long ago, she is unable to be present for this child’s needs. Because her own body has been used and abused, she is unable to take out her breast to feed a crying, screaming child. And because she is highly traumatised she is unable to provide a space in her womb that is free of trauma. This is Dr Melanie Salmon’s story. Please come and listen to what she has to say. It's the story of growing up with a mother who has narcissistic personality disorder. Dr Melanie Salmon’s story meant that she has spent a lifetime recovering from the trauma of childhood. She spent many years in talk therapy and when she realised this was never going to fully get to the root of her issues, she developed her own healing modality where she is changing lives. If you are suffering from the effects of childhood trauma you need to hear this episode.

Sara felt lost. She felt like she had missed the memo on how to do life. She was confused and wasn’t even sure what the questions were, let alone where to find the answers. It turns out that Sara had CPTSD and it took her 9 years to find somebody that could actually tell her this. And at no time did she think that this journey was about her childhood, about what had happened to her as a small child. What she did have was a bunch of missing pieces. And that’s how Sara describes complex trauma. Survivors become so fragmented, so broken up into a million tiny pieces, each piece trying to figure things out in order to survive. It's a network we build of protection and safety to survive the trauma. And it leaves survivors in a very dark and difficult place. Sara has an amazing instagram page called https://www.instagram.com/breakingdowncptsd/ where she is sharing her own journey and offering hope and resources for anyone who needs it.

The mother wound can be like a gaping hole in the middle of your chest that started in childhood and has never been able to heal. It starts in the womb where you are influenced by your mothers dream of life. Your mother is your first archetype of love and whoever your mom is and however she sees the world will have a profound impact on you. Everything she says and does as you are growing is being absorbed by you. How she handled relationships, how she responded to things, your interactions with her, everything. All of it will impact you, your emotions, your feelings, confidence, self love, self worth. And if this relationship has been impacted in negative ways, this wound might stay raw and angry for a lifetime. Kerri’s relationship with her mom had some early setbacks which left deep feelings of distrust. These feelings affected Kerri’s life and relationships for decades. But the healing journey has been profound. Please join me in hearing Kerri’s story.

As a young girl Lauren felt pressure to look pleasing to those around her. To look perfect. To fit in. And as she got more into her love of acting, the pressure only got worse. Constant analysis of looks, weight. Perhaps you should lose a few pounds? Your voice isn’t great. Picking away at the very core of her soul. This is a story of a beautiful passionate young girl who had a dream. To be successful. As an actor. But the unrelenting drive to be perfect took its toll. The anxiety, the panic to always be what everyone else wants you to be is, in the end, untenable. Life comes crashing down around your ears and as you try to take that one last chance at the dream, you realise that life is guiding you in a different direction. Lauren's story is compelling listening. There are so many twists and turns to this story as Lauren gets lost along the way. But every single word is truth. And a good reminder that sometimes trauma can show up in our pursuit of perfection.

Do you feel stuck? Do you feel like you’ve done all the things. You’ve tried so hard to heal and you’ve made so much progress. But there’s still something in the way. And you can’t figure it out. You know what you want, but you just can’t get there. It’s sabotaging the life you want for yourself. But what is it? I’m chatting with Amanda Monnier Energy Healer and the answer? it could be all about energy. Amanda’s parents divorced when she was just six years old and like many kids of divorced parents, Amanda took on those emotions and was left with the belief that what had happened to her family was her fault. As an empath and intuitive Amanda was picking up on everything that was happening around her, absorbing the low vibrational energy and all of the chaos. And this was a belief she carried with her for many years. It sabotaged her adult relationships and finally Amanda experienced her dark night of the soul which saw her begin to turn things around. Amanda is now an energy healer and helps women to find the resistance we hold from our family history, our beliefs and our emotions and teaches us how to rewire all of that to create the life we have always dreamed of.

Shanon is a beautiful soul. I connected with her on Instagram where she has an amazing following of trauma survivors who are finding connection and community @survivingchiildhoodtrauma. And Shanon’s story is one of the hardest there is. Shanon never met her Mom. She died whilst giving birth to Shanon. And Shanon was raised by her father. Under his care she was abused by her Grandfather. At five years of age Shanon began asking people outside of her home to hear her. Because even at five she questioned what was happening. But nobody listened. Nobody. There is so much more to this story of childhood trauma and healing and the only person who can tell it, is Shanon. It’s vital you hear Shanon’s story.

Are you ever deeply confused as to why your life seems to be in a perpetual cycle of chaos? Do you feel there is something wrong with you but you have no idea what it is? Why you can’t seem to get it together? Why things turn out badly over and over? If so, you need to hear Tanner’s story. Tanner grew up in a household where one parent was abusive and the other parent was unavailable. For years Tanner was presenting to the world as the one who had it all together. She was voted the person most likely to succeed in her graduation class. She studied at Stanford and appeared to have a wonderful life. But behind the scenes, things were messy and confusing. And then she hit rock bottom. Tanner's husband sat her down one day and told her he didn’t think he could be married to her any more. And that moment was devastating. And life changing. Tanner felt there was something wrong with her but she had no idea what it was. And so she set out on a mission to find answers. I am chatting with Dr. Tanner Wallace, Professor of Health and Human Development and she is leading a survivor-led trauma recovery revolution. You are going to love everything Tanner has to say because it is truth. It is raw and real and it is shared straight from the heart.

When Amanda was growing up she felt she was never good enough. Coming from a family whose language revolved around negativity and limiting beliefs and with a history of depression, Amanda struggled at school and felt disconnected. Regardless she did all the things. Finished school, went to uni, got a degree, got married, had a child, ticking off all the boxes required for a 'successful life’. The life and the path we are led to believe will bring us happiness and fulfilment. But does it? Because whose dream are we living? Our parents? Societies’? Amanda was living the dream but was in such a negative headspace she describes her days as one endless Pity Party! And she knew things needed to change. In this episode we are chatting about who am I really? How do I find me? Because the narrative you are running in your head from childhood and what you believe about yourself will be creating your reality now. Amanda Ryall Hill is the author of I CHOOSE ME. She is also a podcaster and teacher. She is passionate about teaching us how to heal our inner wounded child and show up to be the joyful, creative humans we were born to be. Please join me to hear Amanda explain how to choose you and live the life you crave.

PART 2. Please listen to Part 1 before this episode.
Domestic abuse is at epidemic proportions across the globe. How does this happen to so many women? In the story I am sharing with you this week the path is clear. Nita grew up in an environment that was unsafe. She spent many years doing the very best she could to make this environment work for her as she learned to people please and abandon herself over and over. Control and expectation ruled and so when Nita escaped into her marriage she thought she would be saved from an abusive childhood. However, as Nita describes it, she ended up in a marriage that was just like 'home'. Abusive and controlling. A repeat of everything that had been so familiar to her. And this is the story of so many women. Because when your self esteem is so low and you are living your life to make everyone else happy you can absolutely learn to live with being treated in the most abusive of ways. And so it continues from childhood through into adulthood. Nita's life changed the moment her 9 year old daughter, with tears streaming down her face, said, "Momma, daddy loves you, he just shows it by being mean." A day that changed everything. Nita is now a coach using her power as a survivor and everything she has learned to help others in the mental health awareness space. We had so much to chat about that Nita's story will be broken up into two parts. Here is Part 2.

Our world is filled with unwellness. The rates of chronic illness are through the roof. The pharmaceutical industry is pumping out medications to fix diagnoses and bring us relief from thousands of chronic health symptoms every day. How did we become so unwell? Is there a better way? Sarah Harvey believes so. Sarah has spent her life fighting a myriad of chronic health issues. Always unwell. Always struggling. Until a trip to India showed Sarah another way to think about what was happening to her body. The mind body connection is real and when we have experienced childhood trauma, that trauma is held in our body and shows up in our health. As we solve one health issue, another appears and we can end up on a merry-go-round, never being well and never solving the problem. Trauma causes chronic health issues and we have the power to heal and thrive after living with symptoms for years. If you have been chronically sick, you must take a listen. Our mother wound is often our grandmother wound. It’s our ancestral trauma. Passed down from mother to child down the line until somebody decides to raise their hand and say ‘this stops with me’. It’s a strong and courageous move to be that person. The one that decides to break those generational patterns. Because you are stepping outside of the framework that has been taught to you. And you risk losing those closest to you by going down a path with no support. I’m chatting with Victoria on the podcast this week and Victoria is a cycle breaker. Victoria’s parents married very young, orchestrated by her grandmother. Not only did Victoria’s mother become unhappy in this marriage but she never got the time to experience life as an adult before she married and had kids. And the ensuing divorce was difficult for all. The effects of generational trauma is real and Victoria has done a lot of healing and she has had to remove some family members from her life altogether. It is not easy to take this route but there is so much strength in being that person. Please join me in hearing Victoria’s story.

Our mothers are our nurturers, gatherers, protectors. They bring us into the world and we rely on them for everything. And so when that relationship becomes toxic, it is one of the hardest things to bear. Marci's Mom and Dad had a difficult relationship from as far back as Marci can remember. There was always tension, anger, fighting. And when her father left, Marci thought her Mom's behaviour would improve. But unfortunately for Marci it just got worse. Bi-polar and narcissistic, Marci's relationship with her mother deteriorated. For many years Marci continued to tolerate toxic behaviour but it wasn't until her Mom turned this destructive behaviour towards Marci's children that Marci had no choice but to cut her out of her life. Marci has spent many years healing and being the mother to her kids that she never had herself. Please join me in hearing Marci's story.

Paulina was born in Poland. Her grandmother was just 19 when World War II broke out. It was a traumatic time and her grandmother was forced into hiding to avoid the concentration camps. At one point she was made to hide in a bread oven. The deep anxiety carried from those years was eventually passed down to Paulina’s mother and finally to Paulina who has struggled with anxiety for most of her life. At 14 years of age Paulina was anorexic and at her lowest point she was 35kg and about to be hospitalised. Anorexia eventually turned into bulimia and the toxic cycle of an eating disorder was extremely difficult to break. Generational trauma runs deep in this story and is palpable. Having a narcissistic mother can be a living hell. It can change everything. Manipulation, gaslighting and abuse are an everyday occurrence. Mostly as kids we have no idea what is going on. There can be so much confusion as we try to change our behavior to meet the narcissistic mother's expectations. We believe that if we can just do the right thing, please her, be the person she wants us to be? reach the dizzying heights of what she wants from us? that we will finally receive her love. Finally, she will love us, accept us, be there to understand us and hug and hold us when we cry. But it's just not possible. Because the narcissist doesn't understand empathy or emotion. She operates from a sense of entitlement where her view of the world is the only view and nothing else is considered. There is no love or understanding. There is only manipulation and blame and this behaviour is there for a lifetime. I am chatting with Terry on the podcast this week. Terry had no idea her mom was a narcissist as she tried to mould and change herself to be loved. But once Terry understood, she knew she would eventually have to cut ties with this destructive force in her life. Terry is an Executive Coach and author of Winning The Game of Work. Did you ever wish you had a family where everyone was calm and happy? There were no raised voices. There were no angry words. Your parents provided a good home with home cooked meals and a warm bed and you always knew you were loved? It feels like you would have everything you needed right? But what about real, deep connection? What about real communication? What about when parents don't connect with you on a deeper level? And what happens when you leave home and get out into the world and realise that you don’t know how to deal with emotions like anger from others because you never saw it. It was never modelled at home in a positive or negative way. You don’t know how to create boundaries because you’d never had to use them. And you don’t understand the emotion of anger within yourself because you can’t recognise it. Kimberly grew up in a home that gave her so many great things. But when there are emotions that you are never allowed to express, there comes a time when you begin to recognise that something is missing. Please join me in hearing Kimberly’s story.

Between the ages of 0 - 5 years we are absorbing everything. Like a sponge. We are 'trained' by the world around us to take on the same beliefs, understandings, ideas as our caregivers. The way we do life is learnt and assimilated. And if we grow up in an extremely religious environment, this way is our normal. It's the only world we know. Luis grew up in the Jehova's Witness faith. He didn't celebrate birthdays, holidays or halloween. He wasn't allowed to mix with kids who were not Witnesses. And as a very young child he would preach to kids at school about how celebrating halloween would send them all to armageddon, because this was what he knew to be true. The fear and control around a young life within a strict religion is unbearable. And when you realise that something completely forbidden, being gay, is who you are, what happens then? I am chatting with Luis this week and he gives us a very clear look into growing up in this type of environment and how damaging it can be. And how do you create a life for yourself which is nothing like the one your parents expected for you?

Emma was always described by her mom as a good kid. Never in trouble or acting out. She was so good! But what does good really mean? That you are obeying all the rules? suppressing all the emotions? playing the perfect role? Appearing to the world like the perfect child? And does burying who you really are, never having permission to express an emotion, create trauma? Can that trauma affect your whole life and you never even see it? Is it there driving everything but it's so buried you can’t even acknowledge it? Emma’s parents were good humans. Emma adored her Dad and was so well cared for by her mom who ensured her every daily need was met. But as a sensitive kid, Emma felt everything deeply. When life was happening all around her, Emma learnt that sharing how she felt wasn’t acceptable to her mom who was unable to deal with the triggers of those emotions. And so Emma learnt to be silent. To bury. And a dark incident when Emma was four years old left her feeling very unsafe but she never shared it with another soul. This is the story of how Emma has been on a journey of understanding. Her journey includes a battle with cancer and a diagnosis of ADHD, revelations about the cycle of behaviours in families and a deep desire to give her own two kids a different way to be in this world. Please join me in hearing Emma’s story.

Her journey includes a battle with cancer and an adult diagnosis of ADHD, revelations about the cycle of behaviours in families and a deep desire to give her own two kids a different way to be in the world. Please join me in hearing Emma’s story.

Ali was adopted at birth by a mum and dad who were desperate to provide a loving home to a baby. And that’s exactly what they did. Both very loving, very giving parents who gave Ali a really wonderful childhood. And right from the start Ali was aware she had been adopted. There were no secrets or big revelations. But what happens when you begin to see that you are not quite the same as everyone else in your family? You look a little different, you think a little differently and you have this deep, deep need to reconnect with the mother who birthed you into the world? For Ali it meant suppressing many emotions over many years. Not really understanding the emotions or being able to put them into words and never wanting to upset her adoptive parents Ali's physical and mental health suffered. Ali has been on a long healing journey to find self love and understanding and she has so much wisdom to share with us. Please join me in hearing Ali’s story.

Leslie knows all too well how alcoholism can run through families. Growing up with parents and an older brother who also drank, Leslie was alone and lonely much of the time. Leslie's mom worked hard in the house during the day but once 6pm rolled around she declared she was 'off duty', began drinking and Leslie would often spend the evenings alone. When Leslie was ten years old a horrible accident left her feeling shattered. A child of alcoholic parents can feel abandonment, rejection and neglect and these are all a part of Leslie's story. Leslie is so fabulous and vibrant and positive and her mission is to help women to live their best possible lives. She wants to help you understand that you have the power to change your life. Do you have a deep sense of who you are? Do you always show up as your authentic self? Voice your opinions regardless of whether they are popular? Walk into a room and have no cares about who is there and what other people think about you? Jonathan was a talented kid with a love of sport. From a very young age Jonathan learnt to put on a mask. To be and say what others wanted. To show up as an actor in his own life and walk into a room and play the part. He was a sensitive kid and all the emotions and pressures were hidden to ensure he appeared strong and on top of his game. But what happens when you can’t deal with everything you’re holding inside? When you really aren’t coping with the pressure of life and the elite sporting scene? When you just want to shout out "I'm not this kid!". In Jonathan’s case you turn to alcohol. After taking his first drink at just 12 year's of age, Jonathan’s life became a never ending battle of continuing to present to the world as strong and capable, whilst drinking more and more and spiralling down into alcoholism. After many years of trying to turn his life around Jonathan is now able to share what it felt like to be that struggling little kid. He now knows that the only way to turn up in this world is as himself, his real self. And that’s a journey towards self worth and self love. Please join me in hearing Jonathan’s story.

Mel grew up with a Mom and Dad who were very young and still enjoying the party life. Mel's earliest memories are of fun mixed with chaos. She had to grow up fast, trying to be a part of this adult world whilst also trying to find a way to control it. And then over time Mel's Dad became alcohol and drug addicted. He would sometimes be the fun and funny Dad and sometimes his behaviour would be completely unpredictable and he could spiral out of control and this was a pattern that continued for many years. Being a pivotal support person to her struggling Mom and taking on a huge amount of responsibility within the family at a very young age, Mel's home life was extremely hard. And then a tragic incident in Mel's teen years changed everything. Mel's story is a window into the life of a kid growing up with a parent who is also an addict.

Kim didn't feel the love growing up. Her mother felt Kim was too sour and serious and there was a disconnect between mother and daughter. But Kim's mother was dealing with a series of miscarriages and so much loss and grief. And Kim's mother's mother was in active grief for many years when Kim's mother was a child. And that's generational trauma right there. Where we find a pattern of coping and doing the best we can with the emotional baggage passed down to us by our parents. After her parents divorce Kim was often left to fend for herself, never receiving love or praise or even acknowledgement, spending many hours alone. The one saving grace in this childhood story is Kim's wonderful paternal Grandmother. With Gram she never felt judged or less than. She felt the love unconditionally. And when Gram died seven years ago her parting words to Kim were simply to "enjoy your life". And it has been these three words that have been completely life-changing for Kim. Please join me in hearing Kim's story.

Bianca describes her family as typically Italian. Lots of aunties and cousins with everyone up in everyone else's business, giving their opinions freely about how you were meant to live your life. Except when there were more serious issues involved. Like mental health, depression or the inability to cope. These things were usually swept under the carpet and actively not shared or discussed. Bianca's relationship with her mother was difficult. She felt from a young age that she was not good enough, that her brother was the favourite child. She felt distant from her mom who spoke of her in glowing terms publicly but was detached and demeaning in private. The mother daughter relationship can be so complex and Bianca's story is a true testament to that.

Amanda's parents were divorced when she was five years old and Amanda's mom raised her two kids alone. Painfully shy, Amanda had to attend a new school every year as the family moved often. She was regularly left at home alone with her little brother and increasingly felt responsible for her mother's changing moods. There was anger and abuse at home and this only accelerated when her new step-father came on the scene. By the time Amanda was ten years old the abuse was so bad, she was suicidal. By sixteen she was drug and alcohol addicted. This is the story of when a child's home life sends them spiralling out of control. And it's so important for all of us to understand that a kid like Amanda? she had absolutely no-one to help her out of a living hell.

Rita Pira grew up in a family from a Middle Eastern background with strict cultural rules and boundaries. Attending a regular local school in Chicago, Rita found it difficult to fit in when she was unable to socialise and enjoy the freedom other kids did. Making friends was hard and Rita soon found herself being brutally bullied on a daily basis. Rita's parents had very strict ideas around what was acceptable based on their Assyrian culture and this included what Rita should wear, how she should behave, that she should get married and have children as soon as possible and to ensure her husband was also Assyrian. This is Rita's story of what childhood was like in a suffocating environment and how she has managed to break free and live the life she has always dreamed of.
