Meet Mara Wright...Another Queen that Shines!

I had the pleasure of having such a rich and generous conversation with this wonderful human who is so fully aligned in her truth that's is palpable.

Mara is a Doula, Yoga Teacher, Holistic Nutritionist and Mama!

We dive into everything from her spending 4 years in Tanzania, between the ages of 20-24, to her path of becoming a Yoga Teacher, Mother, and Doula.

What I learned:
What it's like to be a Doula, and how being at a birth - time doesn't exist. It feels more like a meditation, and being able to witness people go through this journey is absolute bliss.
A Doula is someone who supports the birthing person and partner before, during, and after the birth.
*As a Doula, you're available:
-To be at the birth and therefore on-call from 38 - 42 weeks.
-To create those connections of support, whether it be emotional or physical.
-To support the birthing person through the first days after the birth, and options for more postpartum support are available, if desired.

We talked about Sasha Padron, who was my Doula for the birth of my daughter, and how she is an absolute legend, teacher, mother, and friend. She actually taught both of us our Prenatal Yoga Teacher Training, and Mara did her Doula mentorship with her. Sasha is such a pillar for motherhood, womanhood, and offers 6 month Doula mentorships, and one on one calls.

We got some gorgeous insights into Mara's affirmations and truths:
"I am capable, and I can do hard things. I am great, and I am strong."

I appreciated so much when Mara opened up about:
When she found out about her pregnancy that she had to become comfortable with the possibility of being a single mom, and the strength that came with that decision.
Having to make some seriously difficult decisions about what is best for her and her daughter.
How much she loves up on her daughter, and tells her all the time how special she is.
The value of sisterhood - and intimacy of sharing our truths.
*Why it is sometimes so hard to admit that there are rocky times in relationships, and why we need to keep deep connections with those around us.

SO MUCH GOODNESS!

Where you can find Mara...In Toronto, Ontario!

She currently takes one birth client per month.
She has some offerings coming up that include Prenatal and Postnatal Yoga classes at her home, with a nourishing meal as part of the offering. Recognizing the need to build community with new families.

Welcome to episode #6!

A very short and sweet episode about my current thoughts about a gratitude practice versus an appreciation practice, and why I've converted to the latter and not looking back!

Top takeaway:
It doesn't matter what you practice, but in my recent discoveries, it's more about getting into the feeling of appreciation, and allowing yourself to relish in that bodily sensation for some time, rather than just making a list and writing it down. Which was a BIG lightbulb moment for me.
I also talk about there being a piece to my gratitude practice that I didn't realize, and it has so much to do with "I'm grateful for this relationship....(because I may not have it again, or other people don't have it)", compared to appreciation, which feels so much cleaner, "I am so appreciative for this amazing relationship!" Full stop.

I'd love to know what you think! Try it out and let me know. Are you able to get into the feeling of deep love, or compassion, or whatever the feeling is that you appreciate? It took me some time, but I found sitting with each thing for 20-30 seconds really helped. And it brought me to tears most of the time too! Happy tears of course ;).

Thanks so much for listening! Please feel free to follow, review, subscribe, and tell a friend!

And next week I've got a great conversation with a wonderful human Mara Wright coming up! Stay tuned. Because...Queens will Shine!

This episode is a follow up from last weeks episode where I was very emotional about leaving my daughter and taking a solo trip for my 40th Birthday.
Now that I've returned from Sayulita, Mexico, I reflect on all the learnings from my week away; from the gratitude I feel for having a village to help raise our child, to the deep desire to raise confident children, who feel safe and secure, so they don't even miss you when you're gone, and so much more!

The 5 main takeaways:
1) Raising confident children is the key to our independence.
2) Filling ourselves up allows us to give from our overflow and be more present with our loved ones.
3) How important it is to get clear on the things that bring us JOY & begin a practice of doing them daily!
4) Setting up boundaries with ourselves, our family, and our work to make them happen.
5) Writing ourselves that permission slip to do whatever it is that WE NEED TO DO. Whether it is going to the spa, a solo trip/walk in nature, or an overnight at a cabin.

I also mention:
The morning guided meditation I love from Dr.Joe Dispenza https://drjoedispenza.com/
The podcast 'Why Not Mediate' with Masako Kozawa that I was lucky enough to be a guest and talk about my experience with a decade of meditation. https://open.spotify.com/episode/5Y5r6sxJcRraVnSJtw3XVG?si=c2a0ab5a69a94478

Thanks so much for tuning into this episode! I got so much amazing feedback from my last one, so keep the comments coming! I LOVE hearing from you. You can find me on IG @katelynn.corman. Feel free to message me, text, call, email - whatever!

This episode is full of feelings and tears of the reality of taking a solo trip to Sayulita, Mexico for my 40th Birthday! Get your Kleenex out. lol
It's a solo episode that I recorded from my Villa in Sayulita where I dive into:
Why I feel it's so necessary to get alone time to fill up.
Why allowing ourselves to deep dive into the creative space is so important.
How hard it really is to go on a solo trip and leave my 3 year old behind #momguiltisreal.
How sometimes it doesn't seem possible for the world (mostly my family) to survive without me. Just not true!
How it takes so much help from the Village to raise our children #grandparentsrule!
How I swam in the ocean, and caught myself uncontrollably laughing, playing in the waves, and how it was such a beautiful moment to witness.
How play is so necessary and can become stifled when we're in the habit and routine of 'adulting'.
How I needed this trip to step into my own light even though it feels uncomfortable.
Life is not all about it looking pretty, because there will always be the challenges, but we have to decide to pay attention to the beautiful things.
How I want to come back to my family and work filled up to be able to give from that overflow.

Thanks for listening! And if you liked this episode I'd love for you to rate and review, and also reach out, I love hearing from you! You can also follow me on Instagram @katelynn.corman.

*Kelley Pomis is a veteran educator and host of the Teacher Renewed Podcast. As an expert in teacher development and leadership she has shared her thinking on the TedX stage as well as having received award recognition in both her community and education.

*Kelley most transformational moment was in 2017, when she no longer enjoyed her current position, lost funding for a grant that was making it all possible, and was becoming more and more guilt-ridden for moving her family for what she thought were her hopes and dreams.

*This is when she started a downward spiral by self-medicating with drinking and edibles.

*Luckily after a much needed break, deep conversations with her partner, and finally enjoying her holidays, she realized after that it had to be done for her health and family. So she put in notice just after the holiday break, which was the scariest and most liberating thing that she has ever done!

*That same exact day she gave her notice, she received a job offer for remote working in Nevada to coach teachers. Like a light at the end of a tunnel, a perfect opportunity for her arrived.

Soon after she gave up drinking completely - realizing that she needed to find more balance in her life. She was introduced to a book called: 'This Naked Mind' by: Annie Grace.
Now 2 years and 9 months later, there's no looking back. Kelley is now leading the journey to be a more courageous woman.

*Kelley talks about the ability to give so much more of herself to herself and everyone around her, and how her kids are her biggest champions. That even though they were 5 and 7 years old at the time she gave up drinking, they noticed a big change in her and are so encouraging and proud of her as their mom, as they recognize the choice that she made and now her partner has made.

Kelley says that "Being sober has changed the way we live our lives.
"Got to the place that;
My job doesn't define me,
My drinking doesn't define me,
I define me! and who I want to be and how I want to show up in this world."
"Now I'm just so much more present. Surrounded by so much more love and joy, because I can give that to them to."

Takeaways
Anyone who is 'sober curious' check out the book 'This Naked Mind' by: Annie Grace.
If the body is trying to tell you something to lean in and listen.
Being a parent and stepping into that place where you want your children to see that you can do courageous things.
How we learn through failure.
Allowing ourselves to 'shine' through breaking completely.
Looking at ourselves in one year, if we don't do anything, and again at 5 years, and still don't do anything...how sad that is. Life is so precious.

Podcast just launched!

Key takeaways from this episode with Michelle.

Most pivotal moment that changed the course of your life?

-When I had to make a HUGE decision about which Law School to attend to further education in Social Justice. The choice was to either stay comfortable and easy in Canada or make the exciting decision to go to the United States. I chose to move to New York City!

From there:
-Went to Law School to pursue Domestic Violence work, but it wasn't lighting me up. It was much more about 'him against her', without any representation for same sex couples, or helping men in abusive relationships with women.

-Instead followed my heart to support the integrity of families, specifically black and brown communities. Especially because of the strong family dynamic and support from my parents and family, recognizing that 'support' piece is missing in homes that are broken.

Where does your deep confidence come from?

1. Definitely part 'fake it till you make it'.

2. Also, very strong women figures in my life. Especially my mother and grandmothers.

3. Survival - the world is not set up for successful women, especially not black and brown women.

4. A deep belief internally - having grown up in the church and also practiced through meditation and mindfulness.

5. By being surrounded by people that believe that I can do it! And making those friendships and relationships a priority.

How do you continue to move forward?
Planning the path and believing I can get to the end of the it.
-At the beginning of each quarter - ask myself, where do I want to get to?
Includes: work goals, family goals, friendships goals, travel goals.
-I also use a vision board.

What is a daily practice for you?
-5 minute journal - Including 3 things I'm grateful for.
-Full Focus Planner - Daily BIG three things I want to accomplish.

Who is someone that inspires you?
-Myleik (Curl Box) for women with curly hair. She focuses on positive parenting - learning how to be a better person and better parent because of it.

What are a few favorite songs that pump you up?!
Beyoncé - Grown Woman
Mary J. Blige - Just Fine

Hi, I'm Katelynn Corman and this is the Queens will Shine Podcast

In this first episode, I intro a few things:

*That this podcast is not about me, not about you, but about surrounding ourselves with people and stories of connection, inspiration, and being in the flow state.

*Practices that have helped me along the way: Yoga, Meditation, Dance.

*How it just gets to be easy when we're truly following our own path.

*A little bit about me:
-Born in Spirit River, Alberta.
-Moved to Fort Erie, Ontario when I was 3 years old.
-Grew up as an athlete, but dance had the deepest impact on me.
-Never thought I was good enough to do anything with dance, so instead, fell into societal pressure and went to University to pursue Accounting thinking that I could get that 'good paying job', and use the money to pursue hobbies.
-After graduating with my B.A, I was terrified to actually get a job in my field, so instead I asked a friend if I could go with her to Mexico and dance at a resort.
-That one question...led me down a completely different path. We moved to Puerto Vallarta for 6 months, and worked as entertainers and performed in the nightly dance shows on a Resort and got paid! I learned to Salsa dance, speak an amazing amount of Spanish, and met wonderful people from all over the world.
-This path continued to open more doors for me. We (my best friend and I) got a 9 month contract on Carnival Cruise Lines - The Inspiration, getting paid to dance and entertain, and I continued to do 3 more contracts over the next 4 years.

*Queens will Shine is all about recognizing these moments. Being open and ready to receive opportunities that are not on the 'normal path'. But the path that is being led by the heart.

*This was the path that lit me up! and got me jumping out of my bed every morning!

*Being in that flow state and allowing ourselves to see the doors opening.

*Noticing times in our lives when we can feel ourselves shining brighter.

*And also recognizing that we need daily practices that can help to turn up our vibration.

*Playlist coming soon - from all of the guests who have songs that pump them up!

Thanks for tuning in.

Recognizing that we all have a legacy to leave behind, and I want to use this space to shine the light on people that are taking risks, committing wholeheartedly, and connecting to a deeper version of themselves in the process.

I will also share some solo episodes of my own personal experiences, challenges, struggles, and what I've learned along the way...because I want you to know that I'm here too...juggling all the hats on how to be present as an Entrepreneur, Yoga teacher, Momma, Wife, and Forever Student.

From a Queen Bee, who is surrounded by the support of their community, to the Queen on a chessboard, who is the most powerful piece...because even if you've felt like a Pawn in the past, (like you've been keeping yourself small and maybe ok with being mediocre), I'm here to remind you that with enough desire, focus, and inspired action, you can let your light shine brighter too.

Because listen...this is the only life we've been gifted! So are you ok with playing it safe?, or are you willing to surround yourself with the energy of abundance and manifest something bigger?!...Believing that we all have gifts that need to be shared with the world.
