“Legends Never Die, But Hero’s Get Remembered.” A quote that hits home to so many individuals in this world.
There are very few people in this sport that continuously impact the lives around them, and fortunately, Hudson was able to speak with an icon in American Rowing, Mr. Bryan Volpenhein. The 10-time National team member, Bryan rowed the US Men's 8+ to two medals at the Olympics. Alongside his boatmates, Volp broke records like no other. He stroked the US Men's 8+ to a Gold Medal in 2004, while breaking a world-record time, and Team USA Rowing's first Gold Medal in nearly 40 years. His boat in 2008, got Bronze at the Summer Olympic Games, with an ambition to get back on the medal stand once again.
To close out the month, Hudson brings Volp on the show to talk about his experience as an Olympic Oarsman and the realities of what it takes to be an elite athlete. Not only is Bryan a genetically-gifted individual, but he spends his free time cooking up five-course meals to suit his athletic endeavors and feed his family quality eats!
Hudson and Volp make their way over to answering the Q&A, reflecting back on the training program for the Olympics, and to remember the importance of always being a solid teammate. Bryan explained his reasoning for feeling so removed from the sport since he left UPenn, the Olympics in 2000, as well as common misconceptions when pertaining to that cycle, and ultimately, what got him back into coaching, as it was recently announced that he was appointed Head Coach of the Men's and Women's Rowing team at Oklahoma City University, an NAIA school, home to the OKC High Performance Club. Be sure to tune into this episode, and hear about how one of the Greatest Walk-On's in American Rowing, never forgets the brotherhood that he had while rowing for the United States at the highest stage in sports.

Having coached the Australian Men's Eight in 2004, where his crew got Bronze in Athens, he shares the details of training plans and schedules to better explain the magnitude of elite-level rowing and preparing for the Olympic Games.

Tim helped coach the athletes that will be racing for the USA Olympic Team this summer in Paris. Since 1993, Tim has spent each year coaching Cambridge University for their annual Boat Race against Oxford.
Prior to learning the sport of rowing, McLaren was a professional rugby star and national surf champion, but it was rowing where he saw success as an athlete at the Olympics, getting a Silver Medal in the 1984 Australian Men's Quad. He came 7th in the world in the Single Scull in 1983 after less than two years in the sport. Be sure to check out this episode, especially if you are interested in coaching!

On this week's podcast we bring you the Co-Founder of AllMarkOne, Rory Cruickshank, former coxswain at Oxford Brookes University. We touch on the overall backstory behind the brand and taking the lessons learned from rowing into the inner workings of running a business. Rory's impact on UK Rowing has been monumental through creating more exposure (no pun intended) in his team's photography and media content as a whole.
Cruickshank made his way through the Oxford Brookes Men's circuit (2018-2021) and coxed his crews at some of the largest regattas in the world, coming on top during his last year with the team. Hudson and Rory speak about his winning time at the British Universities and Colleges Sport Championships, "BUCS" with a time of 5:31.
Devoting all his time and energy into AllMarkOne instead of going 50/50 with rowing and work ultimately skyrocketed his career to an entirely different dimension. Rory's determination to reign in his home country isn't hard to identify. Be sure to tune into this "Bucket of Bliss"!

All eight, sit ready… ROW! A call you may hear from one in the 9th seat. Hudson decided to bring on one of the best and most successful coxswains in the history of American Rowing, Mary Whipple!
On this week’s episode on For Stars Podcast, we dive deep into the connection one has with their crew, taking the lessons you learn from crew into your family life and the workforce, but most important, truly loving what the sport has to offer to it’s participants, and fighting for what you want both in sports and ordinary life.
Mary competed in three Olympic Games, winning Gold in 2008 & 2012 in the Women’s Eight, and Silver in 2004 at the Athens games. Winning five world championships (‘02, ‘06, ‘07, ‘10, and ‘11) she cemented herself as a LEGEND. A Sacramento Native, Mary coxed with her twin sister, Sarah, at Capital Crew up until college where she joined the University of Washington Women’s Rowing Team, winning a National Title in 1999, 2000, and 2001, as well as a victory from the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta in the year 2000.
Mary has stepped into the role as a Sports Broadcaster, announcing over several NCAA Women’s Rowing Championships, and being the founder of the “9th Seat” an organization set on giving young coxswains a chance to learn how to improve one’s skills in the saddle through knowledge and confidence.
This episode is extremely insightful, so sit back and tune into what Mary & Hudson dive into!

A little over 26 weeks away from the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, Hudson sat down with Mike Grady, a 2020 Tokyo Olympian competing on the US National Team.
Grady graduated from Cornell University in 2019, where he rowed under Todd Kennett ‘91, on the Men’s Heavyweight team. The connection that he shares with his teammates is evident when surrounded by each other… brotherhood, as some coin it. Nonetheless, the bonds he has created with the guys that he’s been able to row with along the years, whether that be at Central Catholic, Cornell, the U19, U23, and even Senior National Team, is one to none.
Everyone has their own favorite qualities of crew, but for Mike, it is the opportunity to race. We discuss the overall dynamics of California Rowing Club, coached by Mike Teti, Skip Kielt & Tim McLaren, impact of Justin Best (a pair partner and boatmate of his prior to college), and more! Head Coach of the Lady Vols, Kim Cupini, joins us here at For Stars Podcast. In her first year of coaching the Tennessee Volunteers, Cupini and her supportive coaching staff, took the Fall 2023 season to "amp up the volume" and focus on bringing all of the athletes together as one.
Cupini is well-suited to lead the Lady Vols, being arguably one of the most decorated coaches in collegiate rowing. Spending over twelve years coaching the Toreros at the University of San Diego, ten as the Head Coach, she developed the women so much that prior to her culmination at the helm of the program, the women at USD finished with the highest ranking in the history of the program. Similar to USD, Kim coached up the Knights at UCF, and just recently Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas from 2017-2023.
Cupini's impact to each program she has lead is truly astronomical --- so much so that fifteen athletes from SMU, along with an additional five from other institutions, entered the NCAA Transfer Portal during the summer of 2023, in following Kim to Tennessee. Similar to the athletes, her coaching staff chose to travel to the Rocky Top as well, even including the Boatman, Randy Duffy.
Hudson and Kim speak on a variety of topics regarding her transition to Tennessee as well as clarification to several widespread rumors and thoughts from rowing enthusiasts. Cupini's primary focus is student-athlete development, seeing the progression of the person as a whole, which is completely evident in the way she speaks about her team on this episode. Be sure to tune into Head Coach of Tennessee Women's Rowing, Kim Cupini!

A fighter - that would be name for Dr. James Clark, a Washington native who spends his time breaking the barrier and defeating the odds day in and day out. Clark, a graduate and professor at the University of Washington, who was a member of the Men's Rowing Team on Carnegie Lake, took on the challenge of competing with the most historical and well-known crew team located in the Pacific Northwest. A large Power-5 conference school in the PAC-12, the UW is known for excellence both on and off the water. James was and still remains to be a positive influence on the world around him adding to the initiative of overcoming obstacles in order to live an ordinary life filled with enjoyment and the willingness to succeed in tough situations. Clark was the runner-up for the 1991 USRowing National Coach of the Year, adding to how much of an impact he makes on individuals, especially the youth.
At just 17 years of age, Clark was hit in a head on collision that led to his leg needing to be amputated. All through that, and shortly years later he found himself trying out for the men's crew team. Nothing was going to stop Clark from chasing his goals, and one of them was to be a member of the Husky Rowing team. As time went on and cuts needed to be made, Clark was faced with having to adapt his rowing stroke as he wore a prosthesis.
We talk about how to take on adversity and the mindset of living a fulfilled life even with the absence of a leg. Clark hones in on his thoughts on international rowers on US Collegiate teams, as well as his new book that he has been working on diligently, which he aims it to be called, "In The Hunt". Tune into this inspirational episode comprised of wisdom and love for the sport of rowing!

Getting to a certain point in your life, you realize the gifts that are offered to you along the way, and for Porter Collins, rowing was one of them. The three-time World Champion, two-time Olympian (1996 & 2000), 1994 Henley Royal Regatta Champ, Eastern Sprints & IRA National Champion, Collins cemented himself as a significant, generational talent in United States Rowing. A 1998 Brown University Graduate, Porter was apart of undisputedly, the best freshman class in the history of men's collegiate rowing.
A rower in the Mike Teti National Team Era, Porter learned first hand what real work ethic and passion looks like. These fundamentals, along with others, propelled not only Porter, but his teammates to reach success and make it to the highest stage in rowing. Hudson and Porter sit down and discuss what really happened during the buildup to the 2000 Olympic Games, the documentary, importance of Pete Cipollone, power of Steve Gladstone and how excellent he is as a rowing coach and recruiter, inspiration from Xeno Muller, and the purpose of failure. We even dive into Porter's occupation in stocks and working for hedge funds, being one of the subjects in "The Big Short" a movie correctly predicting the market crash in 2008. Collins firmly stands by "the greatest challenges offer the greatest rewards, and how we meet that reveals the truth in all of us". It is evident how this quote follows Porter throughout his daily life and experiences competing for Brown, and the US National Team. People did not believe in Porter and he was cut from certain teams, but that did not stop him from reaching his goals and making history. Be sure to tune in!

For Stars Podcast brings you an insight into Syracuse Men's Rowing, featuring longtime Head Coach, Mr. Dave Reischman. Hudson and Dave dive deep into what it takes to "have the juice" in order to be a Division 1 Rowing team, discussing team culture, structure, and most importantly, having fun. A monumental figure within collegiate rowing, Reischman's high regard amongst his peers is worthy to note, so Hudson made sure to highlight the man at the helm of the Orange, entering his 22nd year as Head Coach.
Dave started rowing at Gonzaga University during his junior year of college. A farm boy from Washington, Reischman joined a new sport with no boathouse or coach but learned the fundamentals. We talk about all things coxing, tips and tricks for HOCR and his course record along with viral row2k recording, the three most imperative skills a coxswain must have to be successful, memories coxing at the Philadelphia Catholic League Championships, Stotesbury Cup, and being invited back to Prep’s boathouse this past spring meeting the next generation of US athletes. This episode does get quite emotional, bringing up some sensitive topics that Pete endured during his Olympic years (both personal & athletic), but overall, it made him into the man he is today. Be sure to tune into this epic episode, a true “Bucket of Bliss” featuring Mr. Pete Cipollone.

Welcome everyone to another episode featuring the "Man of the Hour" and arguably the most comedic Head Coach in the history of rowing, Mr. Chris Clark, Director of Rowing at the University of Wisconsin. The former Head Coach of the Badgers Men's Rowing Team, Clark cemented himself as a legend in the rowing world. His overall demeanor, way of communicating and being to the point, is unlike any other. This man has absolutely no fear.
A man of dignity, Coach Clark emphasizes the importance of team culture, the brute force of power needed to propel a rowing shell, and laying down the basics to affirm success on the water, as he once learned as a walk-on for the Pirates at Orange Coast College. OCC, most commonly known as Coast, a two-year junior college in sunny Costa Mesa, California, the men of OCC train down in Newport Beach, where Clark first took his rows as a young man, advancing himself to row for a year at Stanford Men's Rowing, then transferring across the way to the University of California, Berkeley where he completed his collegiate rowing career. Eventually rowing for the United States National Team, Clark knew that somehow along the lines he was meant to coach rowing, leading him to coach at the US Naval Academy, and then entering the doors of Porter Boathouse, calling it home since then.
This podcast is one for the books, not only was it filmed in Coach Clark's legendary "mobile office" away from the wife and kids, and the boathouse entirely... it was on the side of the road, as he believed has better internet connection. We discuss the state of the recent World Championships in Belgrade, influence of Steve Gladstone, coaching Beau Hoopman, coxswains on the team, the walk-on culture at Wisco, becoming the new Director of Wisconsin Rowing from being the former Head Coach of the Men's Rowing team for many years, answering the posted "Q&A's", how to establish a team that is fully invested with one sole purpose, along with more topics. Stay tuned, sit back, and listen to intelligence. Go Badgers, and On Wisconsin!

Price spent his college years studying and rowing for UCLA, going back to coach the Bruins this time on the Women's Rowing front after his time in the role of a Graduate Assistant at Notre Dame while in Law School. Welcome to another episode of the For Stars Podcast, where we have the privilege of speaking to a Future Hall of Fame Rowing Coach, the highly-esteemed, Mr. Dave O'Neill of Texas Women's Rowing. It was about time that we had the Seven-Time Big 12 Coach of the Year, 2022 USRowing Man of the Year, 2022 Rowing News Coach of the Year, and '21 & '22 NCAA National Championship Head Coach along with Five-Time CRCA National Coach of the Year, with a plethora of other accomplishments and award recognitions... O'Neill cemented himself as an icon in this sport.
After speaking with newly Assistant Coach, Alexa McAuliffe '22, on the podcast earlier this year, Longhorn Legends - Kate Knifton '23 & coxswains Rachel Rane '23, Z Romero '23, the Texas Women's Rowing podcast with the middle four of the 2023 Varsity 8+, and Alexa Matos '26 prior to her start in the Fall of 2022, we have had the honor of hosting podcasts with much of the Texas Rowing roster, so we only felt that it was right to host Coach Dave O'Neill, who stands at the helm of the program.
This episode was one for the books, as we covered many different topics, speaking closely on the state of the squad this past spring season in 2023, elaborating more on his coaching strategy, coming to Texas after spending 16 years at Cal, benefits of being a Power-5 Conference rowing team and as a student-athlete, what being a Texas Teammate means to him and the coaching staff, Day in the Life of a Longhorn, responding to an incredible Q&A providing more depth on the program and how he (along with the coaching staff) operate on the daily.
Dave spent four years studying at Boston College, while rowing on the Men's Rowing Team. O'Neill resides in Austin, Texas with his family. This podcast is truly not one to miss out on, and we at the For Stars Podcast hope you sit back, click "play" and listen in on one of the greatest rowing coaches in history, Mr. Dave O'Neill. Welcome to another episode of the For Stars Podcast, where we have the absolute pleasure of speaking to the Head Coach of UCLA Women's Rowing, Mr. Previn Chandraratna. After speaking to the 9th seats of the squad during their season last year, we were able to get an idea for how the coxswains impact the program and aim for improvement, but most of all how much they love their teammates and university. The Bruins are up for an exciting season after the PAC-12 Conference released that they will be joining the Big 10 Conference for the upcoming 2023-2024 athletic year. Shocked at the news, fans from all over had apprehension for the change in conference realignment... so, Hudson sat down with the Bruin Head Coach to discuss what this really means for the university, let alone the rowing team's racing schedule and overall adjustment. Chandraratna gathers his thoughts on an array of topics centering the Bruins and how he (along with the coaching staff) operates the program and fosters strong athletes with hearts for service.
We discuss how "rather than significance, go for excellence, and make the most out of everyday, but most of all being grateful for all things". In addition to that, we talk about the typical Day in the Life of a student-athlete on the rowing team at UCLA, answer some Q&A's, move from junior rowing to becoming a collegiate athlete, perks of being an athlete in Westwood and rowing on the water in Marina del Rey. Chandraratna emphasizes how important team culture is to the squad and even gives examples of the true characters encompass the squad, to grow one another day by day. We also cover the recent passing of Amy Fuller-Kearney, who sadly lost her life to cancer, and coached the Bruins for over 20 years, cementing herself as a historic part of the university impacting student-athletes for over two decades.
Previn spent four years studying at Columbia University, while rowing on the Men's Heavyweight Team, where he found himself going back and coaching the Lions for several years, along with some other local rowing clubs in the New York area. Previn resides in Los Angeles, with his wife and son, who is an avid Star Wars fan! Be sure to tune into this epic podcast episode bringing an absolute heavy, "Bucket of Bliss" to the scene!

Welcome everyone to another episode of the For Stars Podcast, where today we hear from Southern California rower, 10-Time US National Team Member, and well-known sports filmmaker, Nick Trojan. We talk about his impact on Long Beach Junior Crew, the United States National Team, rowing at seven World Championships, and even spending a year rowing with Orange Coast College (the only junior college in America to have a competitive rowing team). Nick has always loved visual arts, even dating back to high school, so when he decided to take sports filmmaking to the next level, passion took over... and now paving the way for making rowing and the people involved more visible to the world. He currently has three documentaries available to the public featuring teams such as Harvard & Yale Heavies, as well as Cal Men's Rowing, with more in the books! Some of the documentaries he was working on, would have had an average joe quit and move on to something else, but Nick stuck with it and kept chasing his goal to put out superior work.
The lessons that Nick learned at Long Beach Junior Crew was monumental, and in his words, "saved his life"... being taught foundations such as structure, commitment, and setting standards for himself in order to be elite. Rowing lightweight in high school and on the US National Team, Nick dabbled rowing heavyweight when it was available to him. We talk about the absence of lightweight rowing, meaning behind his nickname, living with host families, rowing at OCC instead of a four-year university, the simplicity of rowing, along with other subjects and future projects, so tune into this "Bucket of Bliss"!

Welcome everyone to another episode of the For Stars Podcast, where today we bring you the infamous and well-known rowing coach, Mr. Casey Galvanek (Head Coach of Sarasota Crew & the USA Junior National Team)! It was only right that we had this episode drop a week after one of his upper-echelon and top apprentices, Clark Dean, was featured! We talk today about a plethora of topics revolving around United States Rowing, in particular, the youth scene, as well as his entire journey coaching at one of the most premier rowing clubs in the world, Sarasota Crew, home of over 200+ competitive junior athletes.
Galvanek grew up in Northern Virginia, going to Garfield High School, rowing both in middle school as well as high school - he has been coaching rowing for quite some time! He then started coaching at Woodbridge High School, as his first job as a rowing coach, where FSP alum & Associate Head Coach for the Men’s Heavyweight Crew team at Princeton University, Mr. Matthew Smith, attended. Five years after Sarasota Crew was founded in 2002, Galvanek originally became a coach for the sculling program, but shortly after branched out into all things rowing. He took leadership of the program in 2008/Spring of 2009, making an impact ever since, developing Olympic athletes, National Champions, and future leaders in this country.
Our longest episode yet, ahead of the Rane Family’s podcast, covered subjects surrounding the 2020 year, recent Rowing News article, all things centering the USA Junior National Team system and the protocols/knowledge of how the system functions, trust in a coxswain, critique and analysis, as well as the importance of coach recommendations, rankings and surpassing barriers, opinions on gap years, goals for the future of USA Rowing, having competitive athletes and pushing each of them to be the best, team meetings with athletes during season, impact of certain athletes, laying down the “Sarasota Tree Trunk” myths, and last but not least… gives us our first ever draft of all the athletes he has coached at Sarasota Crew, developing a roster of athletes he would choose to be in the ultimate Hall of Fame. Originally, the intent was to create an eight’s worth of rowers but he extended some more into the equation… possibly for spares?? I guess we shall never know… be sure to tune into Coach Casey Galvanek’s podcast, you definitely do not want to miss out on this one!

Many of you may or may not have heard of a man by the name of Clark Dean, the 6'5" USA Olympian and Harvard Men's Heavyweight from the town of Sarasota, Florida. Well, fortunate for you, and here at the For Stars Podcast, we got him spotlighted, talking about United States Rowing as a whole both at the junior, collegiate, and olympic level. Clark has made a lasting impact on the past, present, and future of the USA with his intellect and skill in the rowing shell.
During his 8th grade year (2014), Clark took his first challenge in rowing at Sarasota Crew, the nationally-ranked youth rowing program here in the States, leaving middle school with a 5th place in the nation competing in the Lightweight Youth 8+ at just 14 years of age. Freshman year of high school, Clark and his team got 7th in the Men's Youth 8+ (2015), 3rd in 2016 & 2017, leaving high school with a Gold Medal at the national stage in 2018. All while, competing with and for the United States Junior National Teams, during the summers of 2016-2018. Clark spent the summer of 2016 after his sophomore year making the USA U19 World's 4x, (having 3 Sarasota boys in that boat) and getting Bronze that year. The following year (2017), Clark got Gold in the USA U19 World's 1x amongst all countries, also competing in the 4+ with a 6th place finish. In 2018, Clark continued the streak of Gold Medals in that event going undefeated in the USA U19 World's 1x.
Going into his freshmen year of men's collegiate rowing, Clark signed with Harvard, getting 2nd at Eastern Sprints and 3rd at IRA's. That summer of 2019, Clark skipped the U23 level and went right to the Senior National Team, stroking the straight four. He qualified the boat for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics which was taken place in 2021, also stroking the straight four.
Clark's journey is not done in the sport of rowing, and although this is his last year of racing for the Crimson, he is eager to help the next generation of rowers get to the next level, so be sure to reach out to Clark on Instagram @clark_dean to get some coaching/instruction.
We talk about injury prevention, where he sees US Rowing in the next several years, the lack of funding in America for the Senior National Team level rowing (which is the only non-government funded rowing body in the World), reasoning to enroll at Harvard, and his experience with Mike Teti over at the California Rowing Club. Be sure to tune in!

You heard it right folks… welcome to another episode of the For Stars Podcast, where today we had the pleasure of hearing the story and pearls of wisdom from Austin, Texas’ very own, Kate Knifton, the (currently) two-time consecutive NCAA national champion in the Women’s 8+ (stroking both of those boats), 2022 USRowing Under-23 Female Athlete of the Year and World Champion in the Women’s 4-, Kate has a story and it’s worth discussing! Knifton’s impact on the squad at the University of Texas-Austin is truly one of a kind, and after having podcasts with a plethora of her current & past teammates, it was only fitting to get her highlighted! Kate’s way with the boat is almost like Yoda with the Force… the two mesh well together!
Like many rowers and coxswains, the introduction to crew or anything in life, is never one to put to the side and not discuss as it is an essential part of any career for that matter. Kate took her father, Matt Knifton’s advice (Founder of the Texas Rowing Center and Texas Crew alum), and started peaking into the art of rowing, shortly after her dance career in the Fall of 2015. Kate committed to row and study at the University of Texas during her junior year, and from that moment on, everything changed. After many trials and tribulations, Kate made her way to compete for the United States, where she was invited to Selection Camp in 2017 - one of the pinnacles in rowing for the nation. Originally, was moved to the High Performance Group but that called up last minute to the World’s group, where she then raced the U19 Women’s Pair. Fast forwarding to her senior year, her and her pair partner, Kate Burns, got 2nd at Youth Nationals, competing for her home club of the Texas Rowing Center and later that summer got 3rd at U19 Worlds, in the Coxed Four. After Texas Rowing won the 2022 NCAA National Championship, Kate and her teammates made their way to U23 Selection Camp, where her and three of her teammates competed in the Straight Four during trials, and advanced onto the World Rowing level, securing a World Championship in Italy. It was a great summer, but all while she was doing great things, she was rowing through an injury, more specifically a herniated disk and had to get spinal surgery that Fall, which took her out of the seat for quite some time, but rowing never escaped her mind or daily activities one bit.
We speak on what to do when one is faced with injuries, moving forward from it, and other topics as well. Kate made it clear that what you see online is not always what it appears to be. This past year after all of the success that Texas Rowing has had, upgraded into a new Locker Room and Rowing facility! Kate and Hudson talk about what it means to be a Texas Teammate and the true sportsmanship the team has, the Hook ‘Em culture, stroke seat and coxswain relationship and when/how to develop respect for each other, daily life as a UT student-athlete, their tradition of “UT Rowing - Black Friday”, the influence of the coaching staff and more specifically Head Coach Dave O’Neill, the importance of implementing cross-fit into training, going hard every workout so the future ones won’t be as difficult, advice for 2k prep and workouts in general, the influence her parents and teammates has had on her life, more specifically coxswain, Rachel Rane. Kate couldn’t imagine getting to this point in her career, and let me tell you - none of this was as easy as it sounds, one has to put their foot forward and work!
Be sure to tune into Kate’s journey and although this is her last year of racing for the Longhorns, she is pumped to inspire future athletes to never give up! Last but not least, Hook ‘Em Horns!

Welcome to another episode of the For Stars Podcast, where today we get to hear from the Youth over in the Midwest of the United States, coxswains on the Varsity Men’s team from New Trier, Chicago & St. Ignatius - Cleveland, Kannan Alford (Stanford Men’s Rowing 2027), Chas Knittel (UW Men’s Rowing 2027), and Ellen Ariathurai (USC Women’s Rowing 2027).
These athletes LOVE the sport of rowing and to be honest have so much passion that it might knock your socks off, but not just for rowing, but their appreciation and knowledge of the river of which they spend their days in almost everyday - so don’t be surprised if you may think you are reclining back with your pencil and paper back in US History class, learning about river ways and such.
Graduating from their programs this spring, Kannan, Chas, and Ellen, have lots to touch on and reflect throughout their time coxing, and get ready to take on their next adventure in the fall coxing for all Division 1 Men’s or Women’s Rowing teams, all in the SAME conference - hard to tell if they all LOVE the Midwest, when they are all shipping out West in August!!
Hudson and the Midwest Coxswain Squad talk about their racing schedule for the spring, competition around the nation, what it looks like rowing for a high school team versus a club team atmosphere, and in Ellen’s case, being a woman on a men’s team. In addition to this, the 9th seats chat about their reasonings for signing with their prospective teams and how they aim to make a positive impact there. Welcome to another episode of the For Stars Podcast, where today we get to hear from rower, coach, and overall team player, Trevor Phillips. Graduating from the Newport Aquatic Center Varsity Men’s team in 2017, Trevor left as a United States Rowing Youth National Champion in the Men’s Varsity 8+. After Youth Nationals, Trevor enrolled at UCLA where he joined their Men’s Rowing team. Meanwhile, his outlook on rowing changed instantly, and quite honestly, did not know what he was getting into, being a member of arguably one of the most successful youth rowing clubs in the nation, with one of the most elite and profound rowing center’s to train in, to a collegiate club team not funded by the university. Despite the challenges, Trevor was ready to take on the challenge of being a Bruin and add onto the history of the UCLA Men’s Rowing team for not just four, but five years of collegiate racing. While at UCLA, Phillips and his teammates won the 2019 Head of the Charles in the 4+, as well as many other races during his time there.
After UCLA, Trevor circled back to his roots at the Newport Aquatic Center, where he once trained in high school, and is now a Varsity Women’s Rowing coach. Hudson and Trevor discuss the high school rowing scene changes not just at NAC but in the world as a whole (more specifically the USA), collegiate club rowing - what goes into it all, the struggles and benefits, the backend, at which not too many people get to see, and why he chose UCLA over Northeastern (a highly-ranked and competitive D1 crew team). In addition to this, the boys chat about the overall benefit of rowing, history of UCLA Men’s Rowing, the difference between Good Rowing and Great Rowing, and the COVID Year (which granted Trevor and his classmates an extra year of eligibility). Unfortunately, Trevor had a partial stint in his career at UCLA where he actually quit the team, which is discussed in the podcast episode as well.
Trevor aims to give student-athletes guidance on the entire college recruitment process, ACT/SAT prep, and more, so be sure to reach out to him @rowingtrev on Instagram, and tune into Trevor’s podcast with FSP and how rowing ultimately changed his life for the greater good.

Sam rowed at Marin for four years, and is attending Princeton University to row for the Tigers on their Open-Weight Women’s Rowing team. Sam’s impact on this sport has been quite extravagant, and she continues to inspire her peers on a daily basis, whether that be on the water, erg, or even completing ultra-marathons (with no preparation) that took 15 hours, a total of 62 miles, running non-stop.
Hudson and Sam discuss her experience at the 2022 USRowing Youth National Championships where she unfortunately caught a severe crab in the A Final of the Women’s Youth 8+, how she handled it, her teammates, friends, and coaches support. We touch on her reasoning for taking a gap year, race at the 2022 Head of the Charles, where she competed in the Women’s Champ 1x racing under Marin, language barriers mid-race, and so much more! Hudson and Jack discuss their experience as coxswains, being a student-athlete at Brown, the coxswain recruitment process, how Jack wasn’t originally going to Brown, and more!
We also touch on the triad of a race where Brown, Yale & Washington go neck and neck in Sarasota, Florida this spring, and Jack’s preview on how it’s going “to come down to the last 30 seconds”. Welcome everyone to another episode of the For Stars Podcast! Featured here on FSP is arguably one of the best youth men's rowing coaches in the game, Mr. John Fife, Head Coach for St. Joe's Prep in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Coach Fife graduated from the Prep back in 1998, where he rowed for the crew team during his four years at the school. Fife received an offer to row at the University of Pennsylvania '02, on their Men's Heavyweight Rowing team. He was then offered to Intern at Brown University under current head coach, Paul Cooke where he was there for around the span of a month, but decided to take up another offer to coach the Freshman Lightweight Men at UPenn, coaching there for four years. He spent some time coaching at Georgetown for one year, went back to the Prep for around two years. He then went to Rutgers University - Law, graduating from Law School. After coaching at the Prep for a minor stint and law school, he went to coach at Dallas Jesuit College Prep from January 2011 - August 2017. Fife decided it was time to go back to his roots, where he is now currently coaching the Hawks over at the iconic, St. Joseph's Preparatory School since the 2017 academic school year. Fife coached a plethora of the FSP family, including Connor Neill, Paddy McNamara, and the entire group on the St. Joe's Prep podcast.
The thing about Coach Fife, is that his journey in the sport comes full circle, 360º to the tee, and it all revolves around Philadelphia! His rowing career started at the Prep, and he is now coaching at the program, that changed his life for the greater good, inspiring hundreds of student-athletes everyday. Coming off on winning the United States Youth National Championships in 2021, the scholastic rowing team made a lasting impact on the club rowing squads around the entire nation. The Prep Really Mean Business and there is no shadow of a doubt that they will continue to make history for eternity!
He has so much love for the sport and loves coaching his athletes to be the best version of themselves. Like Coach Wallin's podcast, a Prep alum as well, we talk about his athletes and inner "WHY".... the overall journey coaching, his thoughts on Men's Rowing becoming an NCAA sport down the road, why we need to spread the news of rowing to the youth much more, along with an abundant of topics surrounding his team and goals for this season. Coxing the Vols, Lauren's experience in the 9th seat, is quite impressive, originally coxing for the Sarasota Crew Varsity Men her freshmen year of high school, and then moving to Atlanta with her family, where she found her next home at AJRA. Lauren also brought her coxing abilities to Pennsylvania where she coxed the infamous, Penn AC Gold, furthering her talents.
The 6'7" Stanford Men's Rowing commit, spent time this past summer training at the Chula Vista Training Center for the USRowing Junior National Team Selection Camp, making the CanAmMex boat, in hopes of making the Worlds boats next summer before he heads to Palo Alto, California. Scalfi, originally from New Jersey, where he rowed at Mountain Lakes Rowing Club (now Row New Jersey) also moved to Atlanta in high school like Lauren. Stay tuned for this epic "Bucket of Bliss"!

Many of you might have received emails from a man by the name of "Xeno Müller" a Division , Swiss-American rower from Brown University. Like myself, you might be wondering how he even received your email, but to be honest that is a mystery in of itself. Coached by previous FSP guest, Mr. Steve Gladstone, he helps train youth athletes on what he calls the "SAT/ACT of rowing... the ERG"!! Getting recruited to university is a struggle for many athletes, in which one of the most deciding factors besides academic success, is the time/data spent on the ergometer. Xeno's program focuses 1on moving past the mental hurdle of the erg, and improving times slowly but surely. We hear his main reasoning of creating this unique idea, winning C.R.A.S.H.-B'S, the value of a coxswain, and his overall mission in this sport. Be sure to tune in!

You have most likely heard the last name “Rane” come up in some sort of rowing dialogue. After the podcast with the New Trier Boys, I felt it was only right to have twins Rachel Rane & Jonah Rane, NTRC ‘19 coxswains, along with their older sister, Eden Rane, NTRC ‘17 coxswain, to discuss how their family comprised of 80% coxswains, manage to be some of the most elite and well-respected boat drivers in the nation. The family chats about the true competitive culture that they were raised in, how they go about breaking records, making history, and so much more. The love that they all share for the sport is truly unmatched. Rachel is the Varsity 8+ coxswain for the University of Texas, having been a two-time consecutive NCAA National Champion for 2021 & 2022, while also striking Gold in the Women’s 8+ at the 2022 Under-23 World Rowing Championships in Italy this past summer. Jonah coxes for the Badgers at the University of Wisconsin on the Men’s Rowing team, where he competed at and won the 2022 Royal Canadian Henley, while continuing to impact the squad on a positive note. The eldest sibling, Eden Rane, coxed the Women’s Lightweight Rowing Team at the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 2021, being the president of SAAC, a large role representing student-athletes. Their mother, Michelle, also coxes Masters Rowing and is probably one of the most supportive parents (along with their father Mike) in the rowing game. Tune into one of those episodes, that will make you want to get out there and just be straight “dawgs”. The passion and ambition that this family has for the 9th seat position is truly out of this world!

Times were tough, storylines were cut short, resolutions were left unfinished, but it's simple, what could you achieve in the midst of all the chaos? Was there room for light at the end of the tunnel? Born in the UK, raised in Southern California while rowing for Marina Aquatic Center Junior Rowing, then getting recruited to join the Beavs & row D1 crew over at Oregon State University, and then moving back to the UK, in order to row for Oxford Brookes, is the journey of Mr. Alex Chick. An American Rower (mixed with a "spritz" of British ancestry) recalls his time training for his competitive youth crew team and the mental fortitude his team endured. Chick strongly believes that the "Marina Aquatic Center (MAC) Junior Men's Rowing Varsity 8+, and Class of 2020 was the epitome of 'The Lone Wolf' mindset". Do yourself a favor, and tune into how this So Cal Native found his "calling," in the wild 21st century.
Forster states that "I have always been a coxswain but I just recently found rowing". Locking in and mentally preparing for the adventure, the smaller sized individual takes charge and leads the crew to victory on and off the water. Coined as the Coxswain, half the size of the pack but more powerful than one can imagine, the leader of the squad or “ninth seat” embraces the chronicles of an athlete, without the need to perform physical exercise. Respect, trust, leadership, admiration, along with others, are earned, not expected. We talk about the power of the individual being mighty in its size, yet the magnitude that one holds while living out the position of a coxswain of their crew. Sit in on Ms. Whitney Powell aka “The Candid Cox” as she gives us our second “Bucket of Bliss” on the benefits and struggles that one may endure in this sport, the toll on the mental-side of athletics, and relationships within their team and coaches. Together, we converse about the United States National Team circuit, world rowing traditions, and how coxswains need to be "a student of the sport". This podcast relates to all rowers, coaches, and coxswains who might need an outlet to hear and relate to all of the thoughts we may feel, but don’t talk about on a daily basis. Follow Whitney on Instagram at @ironwillwhit & @thecandidcox for her updates and rowing expeditions. Not only that but tune into her own podcast channel "The Candid Cox Cast" on Youtube.
