This episode of the Reaching For The Middle podcast is an experiment of generative AI technology. Using the platform ChatGPT the instruction was "Write a 5 minute Reaching For The Middle podcast episode about learning from the mistakes of our youth, and lessons we learned as adults". The unedited result was then converted from text to speech using the platform Revoicer. The video version used Dall-E, an AI art generator that has a similar interface to ChatGPT. The regular host and producer of the RFTM podcast, James Donison, then wrote an intro and extro, passed it through Revoicer, and the cut it all together with royalty free music in Final Cut Pro. James took the AI art and created a moving mouth for the video.

I caught up with them on the midway point of their journey, in Port Arthur Tasmania. With many of her family still in the Ukraine, and at the time of this writing, some trapped in a cellar in the Mariupol war-zone, Oksana Tkachenko is juggling her successful career, and family life in Australia, with the constant worry of the horrors that are happening in her birth country.
In part one of a two part conversation with Oksana, we discuss her childhood in the Soviet Union and the volatile conditions in the Ukraine after it gained independence in the 90's, and how she's a testament to the resilience of the Ukrainian people.
She shares how she ended up moving to South Australia in 1999 after being separated from her husband for almost two years; and how speaking 4 languages, and being educated, was still not enough to secure her a job in male dominated industries.
Through her company, Brisbane based, Lean Finance (link in description) Oksana discusses an initiative to create a socially responsible foundation, Solar Flower, to attract charitable donations and investment which would provide aid to those in, and those who escaped, war torn Ukraine.

In part one of my two part chat with Writer/Comedian/Podcaster Paul Bae, we talk about his Korean roots in a ‘not so Korean’ suburb of Ontario, Canada. And how his families determination to make Korean friends led Paul to a stint as a Youth Pastor, getting married, and then divorced after turning to Atheism.

As it’s the first podcast of 2022, and since I didn’t do it in season 1, I thought it appropriate to tell all you fantastic listeners about the host, James Donison. That’s me!
It’s a brief introduction to where I came from, how I went from Canadian Television to driving a tram on the Gold Coast, Australia, then back to my passion of video production and photography. I’ll also discuss some of my failures and successes in between.
As I expect from most of my guests, I didn’t do a lot pf preparation for this podcast. Although I quickly wrote a script for most of the episode, I didn’t go back and edit or censor myself. Some of it is raw, some just had to be said, and some shouldn’t have been said at all.

Megan Cameron works as a Line Producer for Unscripted Television in Vancouver, Canada.
In this episode, Megan explains what she feels is the big difference between unscripted and Reality TV, and why her job preferences tend to side with the former. She talks about her slow rise into TV Production, and how barely anyone spoke to her at her first major TV job. Now in a career she loves, Megan discusses sexual harassment on set, and how the unscripted genre she works in may have less support than others.
We chat about musical theatre and the importance of knowing how to sing, abduction, and how, when I was 5-years-old, I thought singer Neil Diamond was a mass murderer (it’s funnier than it writes).
