Today we talk with Lucas Wilson who is the author of the book Shame Sex Attraction: Survivor’s Stories of Conversion Therapy. This is a book of curated stories from folks who (exactly as the title states) have survived conversion therapy. We start the conversation by hearing what exactly is conversion therapy and learning about “conversion ideology” which is the underlying belief system behind conversion therapies. Then we get into the history of conversion therapy and how efforts to erase queer folks, is by definition, genocidal. Lucas explains how shame is core to these practices and tells his own story of conversion therapy and we hear about certain stories that stood out from the collection.

Lucas is a SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Toronto Mississauga and was formerly the Justice, Equity, and Transformation Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Calgary. He is the editor of Shame-Sex Attraction: Survivors’ Stories of Conversion Therapy, and he is the author of At Home with the Holocaust: Postmemory, Domestic Space, and Second-Generation Holocaust Literature, which received the Jordan Schnitzer First Book Publication Award. His public-facing writing has appeared in The Advocate, Queerty, LGBTQ Nation, and Religion Dispatches, among other venues. He is currently working on two interrelated monograph projects that examine evangelical homophobia and transphobia in the U.S.

Today we talk about one of my favorite topics, ADHD. If you know me, you know that I have suspected since seminary that I have ADHD but I have never gotten a formal diagnosis. Because of this I have learned A LOT about ADHD and talk about it often. Well for this episode I got the chance to talk with someone else who LOVES to talk all things ADHD–Erin Mieskowski. Erin is a queer, neurodivergent pastor, preacher, writer and consultant who got diagnosed with ADHD at age 36. We get to hear Erin’s experience with getting diagnosed with ADHD, their journey with trying to find the best ADHD medication, as well as learn ADHD terms like “hyperfocus” and “hyperfixation”. As you might expect with an episode featuring two people with ADHD this conversation is chatty and fun. We may also rant for a full two minutes about good fidgets.

Our guest today is Issa Amro, a Palestinian Muslim who was nominated for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent resistance, activism, and human rights defense work amongst Israeli occupation and settlers in Hebron, West Bank.

In our conversation we explore the question, is fame bad? We hear how Caleb, Joshua, and Bekah, maintain their core values while promoting their work, how fans reacted when they came out in public support of Palestine, and the balance of maintaining boundaries while living with a public platform and presence.
Since we filmed this episode back in October, Girl Named Tom went on a Christmas Tour, and they are finally able to release their own original music, and they are on tour again! Their EP “Wilder Then” will be out July 11.

“I would like to see Christians and Jews having a conversation about how we can stop hurting one another…”
Today’s topic is on Anti-Semitic (Anti-Jewish) sentiment or theology in Christianity. We discuss how defining antisemitism is difficult, how understanding Jesus’s Jewish context is imperative to understanding Jesus, we touch on Jesus’ relationships with women and how the “feminist Jesus” came about, and finally we hear AJ’s vision for how Jews and Christians can relate to one another.
I have been sitting on this episode since July of 2023 (nearly two years). Part of why I haven’t released it sooner was because the timing didn’t feel right with the ongoing genocide in Gaza. I didn’t want to give the impression that by doing an episode on antisemitism that I was pro-the state of Israel’s actions of apartheid and genocide against Palestinians. Then I came to the realization that not releasing this episode holds up a false dichotomy that you can’t at one time, be against Palestinian suffering and Jewish suffering. Ironically there is a lot of Zionist rhetoric in fundamentalist Christianity that operates alongside anti semitic theology. And, as Christians (not just fundamentalist Christians) it is important to take a look at how the way we talk about Jesus is implicitly or explicitly anti-Jewish. AJ talks about simply naming Jesus and his actions as radical can be problematic.
If you are looking for a Palestinian voice on the podcast, in season four you will get to hear a profound conversation I had with Issa Amro, a 2025 Nobel peace prize nominee who is a Palestinian Muslim working for nonviolent action and protest against the Israeli military and settlers.

Welcome baddies to Called to be Bad. In this episode I talk with professor, anti-racist, anti-oppression and peace educator Regina Shands Stoltzfus who co-authored the book Been in the Struggle: Pursuing an Antiracist Spirituality with Tobin Miller Shearer. Our primary topic is critical race theory, but we cover other elements of anti-racism and anti white-supremacy work within the world of education and church-life.
Bio
Regina Shands Stoltzfus was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and lived there the first half of her life. She currently lives in Goshen, Indiana, and teaches at Goshen College in the religion, justice and society department. Regina is co-founder of the Roots of Justice Anti-Oppression program (formerly Damascus Road Anti-Racism Program) and has worked widely in peace education. She holds a master of arts degree in biblical studies from Ashland Theological Seminary and a PhD in theology and ethics from Chicago Theological Seminary. She is the author of two previous books and her many articles have appeared in publications such as Sojourners and The Mennonite. She has also written for the Anabaptist Historians blog.

Hey there, my fabulous friends! I'm James Admans (they/them). I am a minister, entrepreneur, and drag queen (Marge Erin Johnson, she/her). I am ordained pending call in the United Church of Christ. I graduated from Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York (unceded homelands of the Lenape Nation) with a Master of Divinity degree in interdisciplinary Biblical studies, social ethics, and queer theology. During my last year in seminary, I was honored to receive the prestigious Malcolm Boyd Veritas Award for my advocacy and social justice work on behalf of the queer and trans community.
I am also the editor of the recently published Beyond Worship: Meditations on Queer Worship, Liturgy, & Theology, a queer worship anthology featuring thirty-three contributions by LGBTQIA2S+ theologians. The book was awarded a 2023 Independent Publishers Bronze Medal in the category of religion.

In this episode of Called to be Bad I talk with Reverend Michiko Bown-Kai who is a minister in the United Church of Canada. We first talk about why language around suicide matters. Then Michiko shares some of their experience with suicide ideation (or thoughts of suicide) as a child and how that impacted their relationship with God an shaped their call to ministry. Later we talk about resources for those struggling with suicidality and those trying to support them.

Rev Michiko Bown-Kai is minister in The United Church of Canada who is passionate about social justice and creative expression. Michiko studied Social Justice and Peace Studies and Political Science at the University of Western Ontario before attending Emmanuel College for their Master of Divinity program. Over the past decade Michiko has engaged in ministry in many forms: as a Sunday School coordinator, program coordination at The United Church’s General Council Office, a youth group leader, an intern minister at East End United Regional Ministry, and most recently as the minister at Glen Morris United Church. Michiko is always excited to learn more about cultures, languages, and nature. You can often find Michiko biking, highland dancing, or befriending as many dogs as possible.

Sarah is the author of the book, Rooted Faith: Practices of Living Well on a Fragile Planet. In this episode we discuss Sarah’s book, in particular the idea of Animism and how it relates to the Christian faith. We talk about how all of creation is alive, including rocks! And how connecting and respecting everything wild around us–is both biblical and beneficial to our daily lives. There is lots of talk of squirrels, birds, and of course chickens. In this episode of Called to be Bad I talk with Scott Okamoto who is a writer, musician, and podcaster. Scott writes about his experiences as a Japanese American who leaves religion while teaching English at a conservative evangelical university in his book, Asian American Apostate.

Sheri Hostetler cofounded the Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery Coalition in 2014 and continues to serve on the steering committee. She is the cohost of the Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery podcast with Sarah Augustine. She was also one of the founders of what is now called Inclusive Mennonite Pastors, a coalition of pastoral leaders seeking LGBTQ+ justice in the church. She has been the lead pastor of First Mennonite Church of San Francisco since 2000. Her writing has appeared in Anabaptist World, Mennonite Quarterly Review, Leader magazine, and more, and her poems appear in A Cappella: Mennonite Voices in Poetry. She is a graduate of Bluffton College and the Episcopal Divinity School. She is trained as a spiritual director and a permaculturist, and lives with her husband Jerome Baggett and their son Patrick on an island in the San Francisco Bay. She comes from a long line of Amish and Mennonite settler farmers.
Sarah Augustine, who is a Pueblo (Tewa) descendant, is cofounder and executive director of the Dismantling the Doctrine of Discovery Coalition. She is also the cofounder of Suriname Indigenous Health Fund (SIHF), where she has worked in relationship with vulnerable Indigenous Peoples since 2005. She has represented the interests of Indigenous community partners to their own governments, the Inter-American development bank, the United Nations, the Organization of American States Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, and the World Health Organization, among others. Guest Bio:
Paul Keim is professor of Bible, religion and classical languages at Goshen College. He received his Master of Divinity in theological studies from the Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart. After completing several years of service and study with the Mennonite Central Committee in Poland and England, he went on to Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he received a doctoral degree in near Eastern languages and civilizations. He taught for over 20 years at Goshen College and as a sessional adjunct at AMBS. Prof. Keim recently retired from Goshen College. Having taught on an adjunct basis at the Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary for many years, he was Visiting Professor of Biblical Studies and Chair of the Bible Department during the 2021-22 year. He is now Coordinator of student services at AMBS. He is currently writing a commentary on the Book of Job for the Believers Church Bible Commentary series.

Shantell Hinton Hill is an engineer, pastor, and poet that centers her justice work around Black Feminism(s) and Womanism. She tells stories of finding her voice and the way black women in her life have uplifted, empowered, and resurrected her. Now it is her goal to live out this empowering work and way of life. Shantell connects this work with the women of the Bible who were unnamed, voiceless, yet acted in faith and power. She describes how Black feminism(s) and Womanism point out the way intersectional oppressions may be operating throughout scripture. We hear one of her breathtaking poems from her book, “Black girl magic and other elixirs,” which problematizes how Christians think of suffering, death, and crucifixion. We finish by hearing about the voices who have shaped Shantell’s Black feminism(s), her faith, and her writing, as well as encouragement for those who don’t know what to do with their faith in the face of all the suffering in our world.

Shantell Hinton Hill is the ultimate Renaissance woman. An engineer turned pastor, Shantell situates her work at the intersections of social justice, public theology, and Black feminism/womanism. A native of Conway, Arkansas, Shantell is married to Rev. Jeremy Hill. They recently welcomed their first child, Sophie June, to their growing family. Shantell obtained a Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt Divinity School. She also earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Colorado State University. She is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the National Society of Black Engineers. She is also an ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Her vocational experiences include work as a Process Control Engineer, a Bible teacher, and as Assistant University Chaplain at Vanderbilt University.

Shannon is a transgender man who believes in the transformative power of stories. We touch on body dysmorphia and the complicated relationship everyone has with their bodies then Shannon provides examples of biblical characters who are defying gender norms. In this episode of Called to be Bad, I talk with "professional nerd" Naiomi Gonzales about Jesus' death, or "atonement theories". We start off by learning why Naiomi is passionate about this topic and then Naiomi describes the various theories proposed throughout history of why Jesus died the death he did. Did Jesus HAVE to die? What did is death accomplish, if anything? We end up discussing why some of the theories are helpful, why some aren't, and why we may need to hold several theories together to have the most complete picture.

In this episode of Called to be Bad I talk with Stephanie Krehbiel and Hilary Jerome Scarsella (see their updated bio's below) about their work at "Into Account" a survivor-based advocacy nonprofit that works to bring justice to those who have been harmed--specifically by faith leaders or communities.
This will be a two-part series. In this first part we discuss the work of Into Account and what exactly "survivor based advocacy work" means. In part two we go into what it is like to experience severe backlash for doing this work.
Bio:
Hilary Jerome Scarsella is Assistant Professor of Ethics and Director of Gender, Sexual, and Racial Justice Studies at Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in Rochester, New York. Her teaching and research make use of intersectionally feminist, queer, trauma, and critical race theories to promote justice and flourishing in gendered, sexual, and racial terms. Hilary is also Director of Theological Integrity for Into Account, a national nonprofit that accompanies survivors working for justice and accountability in Christian contexts. Both her academic and her advocacy work focus on developing effective practices for stopping sexual violence and cultivating communities of sexual justice, care, and vitality. She has published widely both in academic and popular forums.
Stephanie Krehbiel is the Executive Director and co-founder of Into Account. She works directly with survivors confronting churches and other religious institutions, accompanying them through reporting processes, investigations, media coverage, and public storytelling. As an advocate, she has worked with over a hundred individual survivors from a range of denominational backgrounds, from Catholic to Amish to nondenominational evangelicals. Her work has been covered in the New York Times, National Catholic Reporter, the Star-Tribune, and numerous smaller publications. Dr. Krehbiel holds a PhD in American Studies from University of Kansas with a concentration in Women, Gender, and Sexuality studies, and her work as an advocate began during ethnographic research on institutional violence against LGBTQ+ people in the Mennonite Church USA.
As a collaborator with her Into Account colleagues, Dr. Krehbiel co-wrote a report based on the testimony of forty-four survivors of sexual abuse, assault, and harassment perpetrated by Catholic liturgical composer David Haas, exposing coverups and complicity in the liturgical music industry as well as the Archidiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis and contributing to Haas’s lifetime ban from the industry events he once used to target victims. Her posts for the Into Account organizational blog have covered topics such as Title IX regulation changes, the hidden dangers of organizational “lifestyle” policies, sexual abuse in collegiate sports, and the social consequences of institutional betrayal. She is a frequent guest speaker in university and seminary classrooms.

"The framing of sexual desire as a moral failing is one of the biggest disservices that the church has ever done to people."
In this episode of the Called to be Bad Podcast I talk with Karly Poyner-Smith (she/her) and Mylie Brennan (she/her). Karly is a Ph.D. student and graduate instructer at the University of Memphis. Her research focuses on the intersections of gender, religion, and agency--examining evangelicalism, purity rhetoric, and contemporary purity culture. Mylie is a PhD researcher at Queen's University Belfast--amongst other topics, her research includes the lived experience of women in Northern Ireland and the rhetoric of Christian dating books for young women.
Karly says she approaches the topic of purity culture more from a research standpoint, while Mylie says she can provide story and experience based commentary.
In this episode we explore the vast, weird world of purity culture--what it is, what messaging we learned about it growing up in the church, and the many different ways it has impacted our faith and sexuality.

In part one of this episode of Called to be Bad I talk to tiktok sensation and fellow podcaster Joey Trieb about how he has deconstructed from the evangelical view of Hell he was taught for most of his life. Now, as an “exvangelical” he is re-learning a more biblical view of Hell that aligns with his view of God as reconciling and loving.

Ted's Famous Green Smoothie Recipe:
Banana: 1
Orange: 1
Water: Up to a line in the Vitamix. (I don't know the amount, just up to a line. It's not an official line of measurement, it is a line)
Grapes: a bunch. Not sure of the official measurement, just a bunch.
Frozen Strawberries: Handful. Again, see Grapes for an explanation of the amount.
NOTE: A handful is slightly different than a bunch.
Raw Almonds: A little less than a handful. If I was pressured to say the exact amount, I would go with 14.
Spinach: Lots of Spinach, tons, bunches, handfuls.
Process: Add water and grapes, plus first round of spinach--stuff the vitamix full, blend briefly to chop of spinach. Fill the vitamix again with spinach, repeat the blending. Add the rest of the fruit.
This makes about 2 quarts. I drink one and freeze the other.
