When Facebook opened to the public in 2006, companies scrambled to make profiles, which later became pages. Brands knew that this platform was a then cutting-edge way to reach their customers — a way to fish where the fish were. Over time, though, Facebook has become less of an idyllic fishing sanctuary. Facebook can still deliver results for certain companies, especially paid campaigns for ecommerce. But if you’re talking B2B, forget it. Most marketers today know this kind of site targeting just isn’t worth the effort, as the business prospects you really want to reach are not looking for your business on Facebook. The real action is on LinkedIn, which has somewhat quietly become a huge marketing platform with unparalleled targeting functionality.
Mark Shriner needed help. It was spring 2020, and his coffee shop in Lincoln, Nebraska, was at risk as the Covid-19 pandemic forced small businesses like his to close their doors.
So he sought assistance from the federal government’s Paycheck Protection Program, which was intended to keep small businesses afloat as the virus spread and customers stayed home.
All three of his applications were rejected. “I tried everything,” said Shriner, who owns The Coffee House in downtown Lincoln. “Every time, the government basically told me, ‘Tough luck, honey.’” PPP loans were designed to keep workers on payroll and cushion the economic blow from the pandemic. Businesses that didn’t get the aid, like Shriner’s, had to get creative to stay afloat through a crisis that has upended business models for entire industries.
Sending back an online order has never been easier. It’s often free for the customer, with some retailers even allowing customers to keep the item while offering a full refund. Amazon returns can be dropped off at Kohl’s, UPS or Whole Foods without boxing it up or even printing a label.
Jim Cramer on Friday issued a plea to young investors who may be new to the stock market and want to build long-term wealth. “I’m asking all these younger investors who keep toying with options to please listen up: I’m begging you, just own something, own it for the long-term,” the “Mad Money” host said.
Facebook has long bet that artificial intelligence can help it with the difficult task of moderating posts from its billions of users. Now its parent company is taking a step that could move it closer to that elusive goal: building its first supercomputer. Meta on Monday announced its new AI Research SuperCluster (RSC), a supercomputer meant to be used for AI research projects. The supercomputer, which has been in the works for two years, may eventually help Meta develop far more powerful AI software — potentially useful for tricky tasks such as spotting hate speech in posts.
