In an increasingly complicated world, caregivers have to equip their children with the tools to advocate for themselves, their needs, and their safety. Assertiveness is not innate to children. It is a muscle that has to be exercised. A child’s ability to use their voice will translate to success in the classroom, in social circles, in extracurricular activities, and will foster confidence and competence.
In today’s episode, we discuss why developing your child’s voice is so important, and how this will benefit every aspect of your child’s life. I will provide you with the actions you as a caregiver can take to strike the right balance between a well-mannered child and an assertive, self-advocating child.

This week we are in part 2 of the 2023 Black History Month Series!
On this week's episode of the podcast, I talk about the importance of representation.
There is a plethora of research that suggests that it is extremely important for children to be exposed to positive images of people who looked like them! Representation is when children and adolescents see people who look and/or have similar experiences to them in books, media, politics, movies, and the many other things they consume on a daily basis.
Join me in this episode so we can have a conversation about how you can make sure there is representation in your child's life.

Yet, parents and caregivers are the most equipped to create spaces for healthy dialogue—today, children have access to news, commentary, and social media but lack the context that history provides.

In this episode, I am sharing a framework that parents and caregivers can use to begin discussing race, racism, and social justice with children and adolescents, in a developmentally appropriate way!

One major way we set children up for success during the school year is to think critically about the many ways that we can support their Mental health, and that's what this series is about.
This week’s episode is the second part of my interview with Dr. Therese Morrison. Dr. Therese Clarke Morrison is the Director of School Psychology for KIPP NYC’s Elementary Schools. Dr. Morrison also owns an Event Planning and Design firm that specializes in planning weddings, social events, and corporate functions. Most importantly, she is a wife, and mom of two boys— ages 11 months and 2 years old.
Like the last, this episode is PACKED with information. In this episode, we talk about “labels.” Very often, parents tell me they do not want to pursue services in a school setting because they do not want their child to be labeled. Dr. Morrison and I spend some time dissecting what labels are for about how they can be useful in getting your child appropriate services in a school setting. We talk about the stigma around labels and where it comes from. We also dive into what it means for a child to receive services in the “least restrictive” environment, the importance of not using the word “lazy” to describe a child’s behavior, and so much more! Lastly, we talk about the best ways parents and caregivers can advocate for their children.

In this episode we talk about learning gaps, how to promote early learning, building a healthy collaborative relationship with your child’s teacher, and taking into consideration “the whole child." We also talk about ways to support your child who is doing well or excelling academically. This episode is a must!

Note of the week- Growth Mindset For Kids
Don’t be afraid to broach the topic of therapy/mental health treatment with your child.
Parents are often surprised by how willing their children are to speak with someone about what is going on in their lives. Many parents make the assumption that mental health may mean that their child will be stigmatized or that they may automatically require medication or even a hospital stay. What we know is that therapy can be a great place for your children and adolescents to learn new coping strategies, learn problem solving skills, and can even be helpful in improving your relationship with your child.
Today we are going to jump into a few ways that you will know your child needs therapy and what that looks like for them.
Welcome to another episode of Notes From A Child Psychologist.
Episode Highlights:
•[00:01:30] Note of the week, Signs Your Child May Need A Therapist.
•[00:03:33] How to know your child needs therapy and what therapy is.
•[00:05:34] What therapy looks like for children in adolescence and what actually happens in therapy for children in adolescence.
•[00:09:29] Many sessions may take place virtually
•[00:11:00] A lot of therapy for adolescents looks like playing or drawing, or even sketching because these are forms of communication for children.
•[00:13:44] Position yourself in such a way that your adolescent knows that therapy is a safe space for them and do not expect for the therapist to reveal everything that was discussed during the session.
•[00:16:50] Common signs to know that your child needs therapy.
•[00:18:40] Ask yourself, is this causing significant impairment in my life and is this changing my family dynamic.
•[00:21:14] America is currently in a mental health crisis and waiting list are full, so it is best to monitor the symptoms that you are concerned with along with interventions.
**•[00:24:54] Therapy is a process and some treatments may take longer than others.

Social media plays a significant role in peer-to-peer interaction for today's children- if you're 35 years old or older, you grew up differently. You built friendships through face-to-face interactions at prescribed times (school, recreational activities, and playing outside until the street lights came on;)
We often talk about the harmful impacts of social media. Yet, we rarely have conversations that balance social media's positive and negative components until today!
In today's episode, I discuss the pros and cons of social media while sharing strategies that families can use to set boundaries, ensure safety, and, most importantly, tend to the mental health needs of their children.

Technology, namely portable devices, has impacted every industry imaginable while giving us unprecedented access to information. Through these advancements, our children have learned online during a pandemic, connected to relatives in different parts of the world, and gained knowledge at a speed that we could have only imagined 20 years ago.
Despite the positive impact that portable computers, tablets, and smartphones have provided, we cannot ignore the negative impact. As children become more connected to devices, parents and caregivers often ask me how these devices and the media that children consume on them impact their mental health.
In this episode, we discuss screen time through the lens of mental health for children. We'll cover screen time recommendations based on The American Psychological Association's research for different age groups and strategies to help parents and caregivers monitor and control access to what their children are consuming.

When children feel their needs aren't met physically or emotionally, they get angry, frustrated, and annoyed. But, unlike us, our children don't have the emotional language to express themselves —leading to temper tantrums/big emotions. Often when parents and caregivers find themselves frustrated when managing their child’s big emotions.
In this two-part episode, we explore age-appropriate tantrums (yes, some tantrums are a part of normal development), The ABCs of emotions, and responses that parents and caregivers can use to guide children through Big Emotions. The complexities of foreign policy and long-standing feuds between nations are too intricate for adults to understand let alone children. Therefore, I understand why many adults shy away from having conversations about war and conflict.
This podcast exists to assist parents and educators in navigating these critical conversations so that we can protect the mental health of our children. In this episode, we discuss how to talk about the War In Ukraine with our school-age and adolescents children
My goal with this episode is to give adults the tools to help children manage the emotions that come with exposure to images of war and extreme violence. We want to help children develop empathy and ease emotional distress.

Welcome to the final episode of our Black History 2022 wellness series.
When I heard the news concerning the suicide of Cheslie Kryst, attorney, television correspondent, and former Miss USA, I was left speechless like many of you. Suicide rates amongst people of color look are skyrocketing. And for every story that makes national headlines, ten more don't.
I understand that many of my listeners are parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles dealing with children, adolescents, and young adults living with mental health concerns.
In this final episode, I want to discuss the stigma surrounding mental health in the black community. Together, we will examine the cultural attitudes that keep the stigma in place and have an honest conversation about creating real change starting in our own families and the children around us.

Welcome back to part 3 of this 4-part Black History Month Series!
Five years ago, 3-year old Sophia from South Carolina went viral when she visited a Target with her mother and chose a doll made in the image of her favorite cartoon character -Doc McStuffins.
The cashier questioned why Sophia, a 3-year old white child, would choose a black doll. Sophia's response was heard worldwide as she explained how she and Doc McStuffins were the same - including they were both doctors and both pretty.
The moral of the story is that representation and exposure matter for all children. While Sophia's story makes my heart sing as a doctor, I want us to do more to ensure that children of all genders and races see themselves represented in media and academics. In today's episode, I am focusing on why representation matters for black children and the ways that adults and the community at large can advocate for representation.

Having conversations around race and mental health is hard for parents and caregivers. Yet, parents and caregivers are the most equipped to create spaces for healthy dialogue—today, children have access to news, commentary, and social media but lack the context that history provides. In addition to understanding the world we live in, exposing children to Black History is also an opportunity to celebrate and promote a positive self-image.
This month I am celebrating Black History Month with my first series. For February, we will discuss Black History and Mental Health. We're kicking this series off with today's episode titled: Why Knowing Their History Can Improve Your Child's Mental Health. In this episode, I discuss three ways that understanding mental health can improve your child's mental health.

What makes someone a good parent or caregiver? Is it rules and boundaries? Is it an environment with little structure and lots of self-exploration? Everyone from teachers to doctors have opinions on raising how to best raise children. While they may want the best for children, I want parents/caregivers to know that they are the ones who make the rules that guide their parenting!
There is no official rule book regarding parenting, despite the vast amount of writing and research out there. I've had the good fortune of working with parents and caregivers who strive each day to support their children's physical, emotional, and mental well-being. I want those parents to know they are the best advocates for their children. In this episode, I share the importance of establishing your parenting values to help guide your decision-making as a parent.
By the end of this episode, you will know: how media and your upbringing influence your parenting values, what parenting values are, and why they are crucial to your parenting. You will leave with the first few things you will need to start identifying your parenting values.
