Whenever you take that next step toward your life vision, you must get a little bit gutsy to achieve something you have never done before. No guts, no glory.

Getting gutsy does not mean taking uncalculated risks, rather it's about embracing uncertainty for what it is and knowing that you have the tenacity, know-how, and resources to work through the challenges ahead.

At various points in time, we all must embrace our inner gutsiness and make it through our "messy middles" to create our ideal lifestyle.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Geographical location challenges (especially when you're moving 5,000 miles away)
  • Why even the best-laid plans still have obstacles - and what to do about them
  • Using obstacles as opportunities to pause and reassess your direction
  • Course correcting in real-time while keeping a level head
  • Staying grounded amidst major life transitions
  • Creating and not being ashamed to rely on your support network

Taking risks when it comes to charting your life path is never easy, and there’s always a chance that it will not work out as you intended. What then?

Is there a way to create an amazing life while also minimizing the risks or downsides? When should you play it safe versus go all in to make it happen?

I know the fear. I know the trepidation. I know exactly how it feels to take a risk and have it completely backfire, but I also know the joy that comes with a really gutsy move that pays off more than I could have ever imagined. So how do we actually take the first step towards living the mango way?

If you’re anything like me, you love a fun MANGO acronym to easily distill concepts and help you to remember them.

M - Mindful

A - Action

N - Nourish

G - Gutsy

O - OpportunityLet’s break down the components of the mango effect together in this episode!

What happens when you realize that you're not in alignment with your purpose? When you come face to face with the fact that you are not living out your calling, do you just keep moving forward with the familiar or go inward to explore?

Some call this listening to your intuition, but it's much more than having a warm, fuzzy feeling in your brain. It's about not being afraid to actually do the soul searching, no matter where it leads.

Fear prevents us from asking hard questions, making tough choices, and leaving a legacy for those who come after us. Complacency is compelling.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Going back to school to become a psychiatrist
  • What it means to ask the hard questions
  • Imagining possibility while acting on reality
  • Getting support and feedback from those who know you best
  • Thinking outside the box when something is amiss
  • Paying attention to the breadcrumbs when you lack clarity
  • Making a decision even when it's scary

When it comes to coping and even thriving through difficulties in our lives, relationships and careers, it's REALLY important to know how to go charge yourself.

  • Signs that your battery is low
  • Charging yourself before you make important decisions

Ever felt like things were just plain ol' boring? Sometimes when life and work are going well, we forget that our intention has been to get to this very place.

Living for the adrenaline rush in life, work, and relationships is not sustainable long-term. Boring can be one of the best things for us, but we must embrace these moments rather than try to stir up trouble just to excite ourselves again.

When you can prioritize your day-to-day, you can actually build a stronger foundation for your lifestyle rather than shake things up.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Ways to streamline our business and career to create predictability
  • Importance of paying attention to our physical environments
  • What to do when you are a caretaker for someone with mental illness
  • Intentionally prioritizing stability over the next roller coaster ride
  • Knowing when you need to pause to assess your stability levels
  • Surfing the section right in front of you instead of looking down the line
  • Going through a digital detox with our kiddos

This is a fun, light-hearted episode where we talk about the ups and downs of choosing an island lifestyle, plus some of my favorite things about Oahu!

If you've ever wondered if the stereotype of the flaky surfer is actually true, I'm going to spill the beans in this episode.

Your perspective changes the moment you get the stoke, as all of a sudden you're expected to plan your days in rhythm with nature in a way you've never experienced before.

Living in rhythm with nature is one of the secrets to becoming a better surfer, and when you learn to flow with the ocean versus paddling against the current, you have a lot more fun and catch more waves.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Living in rhythm with the nature around you
  • Recognizing when you have momentum in your life and work
  • What to do when you catch yourself "fighting the current"
  • Planning your days and weeks around your unique flow
  • What it's like to surf on the North Shore of Oahu -- and how this applies to all of us whether you surf or not!
  • Reading the conditions to improve the likelihood you'll get into flow

...and more!

  • Surfline - Haleiwa Cam (Mindi's Favorite Wave on the North Shore of Oahu)

What does it mean to be true to your purpose? When you're living in full alignment with what you believe you're on this planet to do, nothing can stop you because your internal and external motivations are in sync.

At some point in time, we all get side-tracked by a circumstance of some sort, often disguised as either a positive opportunity or an "all hell broke loose" moment. That's when we have a choice to align ourselves with our purpose and make a clear decision on our next step forward.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Trying on different identities, paths, programs, and frameworks
  • What to do when you have an "aha" moment
  • Recognizing when you're out of alignment
  • Training yourself to listen to your intuition
  • Choosing a business model that works for you
  • Enlisting support from friends and family when you're at a crossroads

Why is it that modern culture is so obsessed with looking and acting younger? We're botoxing, tightening, lightening, and getting all sorts of sketchy anti-aging treatments to avoid what is inevitable: growing (and looking) older.

I believe that growing older can become a magical experience, where we are endowed with wisdom we could not get any other way. Why are we telling it to f*** off?

When we stop obsessing over how we look and how society tells us we are supposed to look, we are free to embody the human we are meant to become. Nobody is going to care what we looked like when we turn 99 and have lived a full life!

In this episode, we discuss:

  • How "the beauty myth" can affect us at all ages
  • Approaching anti-aging from a healthy perspective
  • Understanding our motivations for why we do what we do
  • Becoming wiser with age takes time and cannot be rushed
  • Culture in Hawai'i with elders, respect, and surfing in their 80s!
  • Living our days with intention, so every year builds on the one prior
  • Going deeper in our relationships with our friends and family

Have you ever been through a program that truly changed the trajectory of your life for the better? The most impactful program I have ever experienced was Seth Godin's altMBA program back in 2016, and the ripple effects are still evident more than six years later!

In this special rollback episode, you'll get to meet "the 2016 Mindi" as I share my story and some of the lessons learned from the altMBA experience. I also nerd out a little about the recommended resources and my favorite books that helped me to take that next step towards becoming a multi-six-figure business owner!

In this episode, I discuss:

  • Learning how to master my craft and "turn pro"
  • Discovering how to get out of my comfort zone
  • Delegating when I wanted to do anything but outsource
  • Figuring out how to accept feedback from peers and colleagues
  • Dipping into my savings to enroll in my professional growth -- getting a 150X return on my investment with ONE new altMBA relationship I built as a result
  • Getting clarity on what mattered most in my career
  • Going deeper into business and leadership subjects (assets, boundaries, narratives, creating change, leverage, constraints, organizational change) that are not often taught in school

...and more!

P.S. I am NOT an affiliate for Seth Godin's altMBA. This is 100% true to my personal experience, and I don't receive any monetary kickbacks for saying nice things.Interested in connecting to discuss this topic? Ever notice that you're not making the progress you expected towards your vision? Maybe you catch yourself procrastinating on a project? Too often, the lack of action is a result of a focus on the fluff!

When we try to "fluff up" things in lieu of doing the actual work, we get caught up in the minutiae and never actually make progress or take action on what needs to get done next.

And then we lose confidence in our ability to deliver because we are out of integrity due to overthinking, over-planning, and over-complicating, but it doesn't have to be that way.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • How to balance planning with action taking
  • Warning signs that you are caught up in "the fluff"
  • Learning to "ship it" before you're ready
  • Running lifestyle experiments vs perfect planning
  • Creating an awesome day by identifying "the fluff"
  • Learning how to D.A.D. (delete, automate or delegate)

...and more!

How do you approach decision-making throughout your day? Success can be boiled down to four words: do this, not that.

People who achieve what you want to achieve have mastered this four-word formula and put it into action consistently every single day.

Simple, yes! Easy, no.

When you master the "do this, not that" formula for yourself, the sky is the limit on what you can actually accomplish in your career, your business or your life.

You add a level of consciousness and awareness to every activity that you do, realizing that there's an opportunity cost to saying "yes" to whatever it is.

In this episode, we discuss how to create your unique DTNT formula:

  • How to identify your MTP (Massively Transformative Purpose)
  • Chunking down your MTP into those 5-10 year goals
  • Breaking down your 5-10 year goals into foundational goals for this year
  • Creating quarterly, monthly, weekly and dails plans to achieve those goals
  • Keeping yourself accountability with regular review processes
  • Adjusting your timelines and objectives based on your reviews
  • Dropping or adding goals when appropriate
  • Using the concept of "lifestyle experiments" when something is not working
  • Rinsing and repeating until you reach your next milestone

...and more!

Ever wondered what it's like to learn to surf in your 30s? That's my story. I've never been the athletic type, and every single time I've tried a new sport, it's taken years to become somewhat proficient.

The funny thing about surfing is that it's taught me more about life, purpose, meaning, and business than any other skill I've picked up along the way.

So for those of you who live to surf (or if you simply wonder what it would be like), we're going to have an all-surfing episode today!

We'll talk about 15 lessons I've learned from surfing that we can all apply to life and business.

  1. It's all about the journey.
  2. Your attitude and energy set the stage.
  3. Learn the ocean and conditions.
  4. Just paddle out!
  5. Commit to the wave.
  6. Wave size is relative.
  7. You will never look like an Instagram surfer - just accept it!
  8. Waves last for only a few seconds, even when time stands still.
  9. Respect the lineup: locals rule the break.
  10. Know your limits.
  11. Learn HOW to wipe out.
  12. Look where you want to go.
  13. Choose your waves strategically.
  14. Never stop learning.

Have you ever hopped on a call or hung out with a friend or colleague, only to be the recipient of a massive "dump" of criticism?

The person on the other end might not have intentionally tried to critique you (or maybe they couched it in constructive feedback), but it still has an emotional impact.

In today's episode, let's discuss how to address our outer critics, set better boundaries around conversations, and set clear intentions around the conversations we want to (and don't want to ) have with various people in our professional and personal lives.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Why we are never obligated to pay attention to critics
  • Tuning into our gut and intuition throughout conversations
  • When reframing is not healthy and actually hurtful
  • Setting better boundaries around calls and energy levels
  • Protecting our physical and emotional energy levels
  • What to do with unsolicited advice when it happens

What is the lesson here? That's a question I ask myself EVERY time I go through a challenging situation, once the smoke clears. When I'm too distraught, upset, or exhausted to recognize the lesson in something, it's a sign I pushed too far. At that moment, I give myself space, but I look for the lesson as soon as my brain comes back online.

All too often, we look up to leaders and those "successful people" who talk about pushing through situations and doing the hard thing, but if we just follow that recipe every time, we'll end up quitting, broken or unhealthy.

I believe there's a better way to achieve that balance, especially as a driven entrepreneur, professional or person on a mission to self-actualize.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • How you can recognize the lesson in everything
  • Ways to improve on your last "experiment"
  • Using your challenges or setbacks
  • Why success stereotypes often sugarcoat the negatives
  • Expressing all sides of ourselves
  • Evolving as humans, better business owners and professionals
  • When pushing through something is NOT the answer

Is anyone else a chronic goal setter or project starter? Setting goals is the easy part, but achieving them can be the tricky part.

Approaching short-term and long-term goals from the perspective of mindfulness and intention, rather than just jumping headfirst into the unknown, will serve us better in the long run. Let's get real about setting good goals and actually enjoying the process of reaching them!

In this episode, we discuss:

  • How to deal with burnout and overwhelm
  • Pros and cons of setting goals you feel like you "have to" do versus wanting to do them
  • Running smart experiments to test out different types of goals
  • Navigating business growth when you have a ton of opportunities
  • Taking the "perfection" out of goal setting and goal achievement

How many of us dream about a lifestyle that we WISH we could have in the here and now, but we have no idea how to get there? Many of us try the "going cold turkey" approach or doing something drastic, but it doesn't always produce lasting results.

Very few people wake up one day having never run a mile in their life with a revelation that they want to be a marathoner and then jump right into a seasoned marathon training program...and keep it going for a lifetime.

It's all about baby steps and mini-experiments that lead to long-term change.

To change your lifestyle, you start with running ONE experiment in the category you want to change. It's not about drastic change but about figuring out a variable that could improve the flow of your day. A perfect day starts with ONE experiment.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • What it means to run an experiment
  • How to design a simple experiment to test your hypothesis
  • A variety of experiments we can run in our lifestyle categories
  • When to change up an experiment
  • Why there's no such thing as falling off the bandwagon
  • Setting up your experiment "the mango way"

...and more!

Have you ever worked through a serious illness or recovered from an injury that left you questioning yourself and your capabilities? When you can no longer trust your body to deliver for you, what do you do then?

Before I caught COVID in August 2020 and then dealt with the aftermath of long COVID, I had no idea what it was like to struggle with a chronic illness that held me back from what I wanted to achieve in life, work, and relationships.

Learning to deal with health challenges (or support a loved one through them) requires us to question our assumptions, come up with creative solutions, and figure out new ways of "being" to thrive amidst unpredictability.

In today's episode, we discuss:

  • What it's actually like to discover & experience long COVID
  • Resources for aiding recovery from COVID
  • Avoiding burnout and overcommitting ourselves
  • Being in integrity to keep and honor your word when your health is unpredictable
  • Protocols for pacing - spoons per day, wellness days, and open communication

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? Answering this question with the intention to act on the answer and led me to relocate from the cornfields of Indiana to the North Shore of Oahu. But why?

In this episode, we discuss what it's like to move to Hawaii and how we found "our stopping place" after almost a decade of moving all over the mainland US.

Environment is the foundational ingredient to creating your lifestyle by design recipe. When you get the location right, everything else naturally falls into place. Too many people overlook location because they assume moving is outside the question for them, but is it really?

In today's episode, we discuss:

  • How to ask the right questions before moving
  • Choosing an environment that works for you and your family
  • Creating a moving game plan (and what to do if it doesn't work out!)
  • Pros and cons of living on Oahu
  • Getting through the first year on an island
  • Some fun tidbits about all the different areas on Oahu

What's the dreadlock journey? It's not just having radical hair, but more about going through an inner transformation just as powerful as the loc'ing process itself.

Why do we let society tell us what we should or should not do with our hair? This is our lifestyle and our choice to do with our hair as we want. Our hair can be an element of self-expression, and it's such a beautiful way to express ourselves as unique individuals.

Dreadlocks are not just for "pot-smoking hippies," contrary to popular belief. There's a story and a journey behind every head of loc'ed hair.

In today's episode, we discuss:

  • Deciding to get dreadlocks
  • What the loc'ing process is actually like
  • The different stages of dreadlocks
  • How spirituality is intertwined throughout my process
  • Surfing, dreadlocks and salt water
  • Misconceptions around cultural appropriation
  • Giving ourselves permission to express ourselves

How do we create a lifestyle where every activity is a flow trigger that leads to the next?

Creating our lifestyle by design does not happen by accident where we just wake up one day and figure out exactly how to create it. Instead, it starts with figuring out the general idea of the lifestyle we want, then testing and trying out various things to see if they are a fit (or not.)

If we want an amazing lifestyle, we must pay attention to how you live each day AND how those days map back to your overarching lifestyle goals. When something doesn't fit, you've got to figure out a better way to get it done that does align, ditch it altogether, or find another option.

In today's episode, we discuss:

  • Creating a day that's filled with flow triggers
  • Making tough decisions when we have conflicting priorities
  • Avoiding burnout and overcommitting ourselves
  • Planning a summer schedule to allow for more lifestyle time
  • Acting in integrity to keep and honor your word
  • The importance of downtime when you're a high achiever

Who else likes to hear about "a day in the life" of someone else? If you're anything like me, you've probably been prone to search up daily routines of successful people or best morning rituals and productivity routines for night owls.

In this episode, let's talk about how we can structure our "ideal day" as a microcosm for our lifestyle by design. When we hear how other people structure their days, we can easily pick ONE thing to experiment with inside our routines or get a new perspective on how to approach the day based on our unique rhythms.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Adjusting our routines based on time zones and commitments
  • Working with our biology (not fighting it) to determine what to do when
  • Morning rituals that set us up for an awesome day
  • Sleep and wake times that improve happiness and flow
  • Creating a perfect day by mix-and-matching activities we enjoy
  • Winding down the evening with creativity and relaxation

Why the heck do we have a living room? Can someone please explain to me why we feel the need to get overpriced furniture to put in a room we rarely use and mount some massive electronic contraption from the 2000s called a TV on the wall?

In today's episode, let's talk about how living rooms are intended to be a place where we actually spend time living -- not an HGTV before-and-after photo that looks great on camera but actually provides us with no lasting joy. We have the power to choose what goes into our living room and whether that's a fit for our values or not.

TL;DR - I converted my living room into an epic home gym complete with rubber flooring, squat racks, weight stacks, surfboard racks and an infrared sauna.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Why I hate home decorating and how I eliminated that guilt once-and-for-all
  • How our homes and living spaces should be a reflection of what we love
  • Going furniture free (finally) after 10+ years
  • Modeling our values for our family and friends in our homes
  • Choosing one word that describes the energy of your living space

Ever want to ditch the label on your relationship? No matter what your orientation or relationship style looks like right now, you do NOT need to cave to the pressure of labeling it.

In today's episode, let's talk about what it means to give ourselves the space to explore, to go deep when we want to learn more about ourselves, to create space in our relationships when we need it, and to ask for what we truly want without fear.

When we can get honest with ourselves and those we're in relationships with, we can often experience a wide range of human emotions that include excitement, fear, doubt, questioning, passion, purpose, and love -- without judgment.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Growing up in a religious cult where relationships only look one way
  • Navigating different orientations and gender expressions
  • Labeling orientations and seeking to find one that "fits"
  • The radical "6-months-of-no-sex" experiment
  • Mixed-orientation marriages - when they work, when they don't
  • What to do when you're trying to figure out what to do next in a relationship

Are you holding space for your grumpy? It's not always about "putting on your happy face," but it's about being true to your emotions and feeling comfortable expressing them.

In today's episode, let's discuss why we should welcome the spectrum of emotions—not just the ones we like or the ones that society says are okay.

When we learn how to process all our feelings effectively, we no longer need to suppress the negative emotions. We can actually get through things better, then reframe, and move on with the rest of our day.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Why expressing your grumpy feelings is not always a bad thing
  • Identifying when to feel your feelings
  • How to hold space for non-optimistic emotions
  • The beauty of authentic self-expression
  • Being there for your friends, family and communities
  • When to seek help if your grumpy gets out of control

Ever find yourself grappling with an "either this or that" question? Too many of us see things in black and white when there are actually some beautiful shades of grey to explore when it comes to our relationships, our careers and businesses, our family life, our money strategies and our hobbies.

In today's episode, let's talk about what it means to start asking ourselves better questions, rather than limiting ourselves to "either or" thinking, because the creativity in designing our lifestyle by design begins when we explore whether a "both and" question can open up the possibilities.

When we can get out of the binary thinking process, we unleash our creativity towards how we live our days, our weeks, our months, our years -- our lives -- with countless options.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • How to have it all without sacrificing your values
  • Stacking activities to "check more boxes" with things that make you happy
  • The dangers of either-or thinking when applied to decision making
  • Balancing all of the things you love with the relationships that matter

Ever tried to get up earlier in the day to join the 5am club because that's what all the "cool kids" were doing? Only to realize that your brain doesn't even want to go to sleep till 1am or 2am? What does that say about your character?

Society tells us that there's ONE way to be when it comes to the most ambitious achievers and some of the most productive humans on the planet -- it's to be a morning person.

If you're a morning person, good for you! You already fall into this camp, but according to Dr. Michael Breus (aka the sleep doctor) that's only about 15% of the population.

What about the rest of us? Like the other 85% who don't get up at 4am bright-eyed-and-bushy-tailed?

In this episode, we dig into the four different sleep chronotypes to figure out exactly WHEN we should be doing WHAT.

  • Bears (50-55% of the population) - sleep and wake cycle goes according to the sun.
  • Lions (15% of the population) - the early risers who go to bed earlier in the evenings.
  • Wolves (15-20% of the population) - enjoy the evening hours and feel most productive later in the day.
  • Dolphins (10% of the population) - light sleepers who tend to be easily disturbed and most likely to have insomnia.

If you want to diver deeper into sleep chronotypes, check out the following resources:

Ever spend weeks or months developing a habit, working a new strategy, trying a workout routine, sticking to your diet -- then have a moment when you wonder if it's working? Should you stay consistent or should you try a different approach?

In today's episode, let's talk about what it means to be consistent with the right things that will actually get us closer to our Life Vision and our Life Purpose, how to stop sabotaging our progress with unnecessary consistency, and when it pays to be consistent (or doesn't.)

When we can get clear on WHEN and WHAT to be consistent in on a daily, weekly, monthly basis, we empower ourselves to get that much closer to our goals. No more wasting time or energy on the less important stuff.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • What to do when consistently leads nowhere
  • The dangers of giving ourselves "busy work" for consistency's sake
  • Importance of creating your MTP (Massively Transformative Purpose) and Life Vision
  • Why consistency must be sustainable over time
  • A step-by-step process you can use to create consistency over time
  • Where to let go of consistency
