We’ve all been there: running on fumes, doubling up classes because "they’re just singing anyway," and feeling like our only breaks happen once a year during summer vacation. From immediate interventions to modeling the "Moral Compass," Jeanette shares practical strategies to move your students from a social hierarchy to a musical ensemble.

Episode Takeaway: You might not solve the "Mean Kid" cycle in the whole school, but you can ensure it stops at your door.

In this episode of The Happy Music Teacher, I’m sharing my top tips for making music magic with your littlest learners.

In this episode of The Happy Music Teacher, we explore 3 powerful ways to engage kids with classical music.
The discussion begins with the concept of using listening maps. These visual aids help students follow along with musical pieces, making complex compositions more accessible and enjoyable.
By providing a structured way to track the music, students can focus on the elements of sound and emotion, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of classical works.
The episode also delves into the importance of how to engage kids with classical music by using movement and props into classical music lessons. Movement can transform a passive listening experience into an interactive one. Students can express themselves physically while connecting with the music.
Using props, whether it be scarves, instruments, or simple hand motions, encourages engagement and helps students internalize the rhythm and dynamics of classical music. This approach is an excellent way to engage kids with classical music in a fun and memorable manner.
Finally, we discuss the effectiveness of play-along videos or rhythm play videos in the classroom. These resources not only provide a platform for students to practice their rhythm skills but also create an exciting atmosphere where they can actively participate in the music-making process.
Integrating these strategies allows educators to create an engaging and lively environment that fosters a love for classical music among their students. This ultimately helps to engage kids with classical music as an integral part of their musical education.
Tune in to discover how you can easily implement these ideas into your lessons and ignite a passion for classical music in your classroom!

In this episode of the Happy Music Teacher podcast, we explore the keys to unlocking time management superpowers specifically tailored for elementary music educators.
I begin by emphasizing the importance of creating a comprehensive yearly curriculum plan. Planning your year and then doing some vertical planning where you use some of the same music, storybooks, and activities will save tons of time planning.
I also discuss how to use technology to save time and keep you organized. Additionally, I discuss how to make use of templates for lesson plans, worksheets, and presentations.
Another great way to save time is by borrowing ideas from colleagues and using online resources to both enriche your curriculum and keep it new and diverse.
We’ll explore the practical strategies of classroom setup and organization, where resources are readily accessible and student helpers play a vital role in maintaining order. Empowering students to assist with tasks such as instrument distribution and classroom arrangement not only fosters a sense of ownership but also frees you up to focus on delivering engaging music lessons.
Finally, I talk about the value of professional development opportunities, and how to save all the amazing ideas you get while you’re there.
Implementing these strategies and embracing the support of technology and student involvement, can help you unlock hours more time and create a more efficient and enriching learning experience for your students.

The Question:
How to quiet a class that screams and doesn’t use their indoor voice?? I have very high ceilings in my room so you do have to project a bit more than usual but the kids use it as an excuse to scream and be rowdy and I’ve had enough. I stand there and wait usually and then address the problem, I also have a quiet sign I show them, but I don’t get why they don’t know not to scream?
The screaming only happens when they get excited about something, not when they’re answering a question or anything but it’s still annoying

In this episode, we dive into five key points to help elementary music teachers navigate the challenges they face. First, we acknowledge that being a music teacher involves more than just singing and dancing—it's about juggling lesson plans, performances, and classroom management. The biggest takeaway? Mindset matters. Having a positive, growth-oriented mindset can transform how we approach each day.
The first point emphasizes accepting that chaos is inevitable in the classroom, but it's not our fault. By having a plan in place and reframing our perspective, we can navigate through it. Second, we explore embracing chaos by allowing students time for talking and noisy play, while still maintaining structure. Making learning fun is the third point, incorporating creative instrument passing techniques, movement, and finding joy in small moments.
Experiencing students' joy, laughing often, and being grateful are crucial for maintaining positivity. Lastly, we encourage teachers to embrace fantasy and imagination in the classroom, stepping into the whimsical world that children inhabit. By implementing these strategies, we can cultivate a happier, more resilient mindset as music educators.

In this episode, we delve into the inevitable chaos that can often arise in our teaching journeys and uncover five effective ways to not only cope with it but also leverage it to our advantage. Firstly, we emphasize the importance of accepting that chaos is a natural part of the teaching experience.
By acknowledging this reality, we can mentally prepare ourselves to navigate through the unpredictable twists and turns that may come our way. Moreover, we learn not to let these chaotic moments ruin our entire day. Instead, we explore strategies to maintain a positive mindset and resilience in the face of challenges, understanding that our reactions play a significant role in shaping our overall teaching experience.
We also discuss the transformative power of actively participating in the chaos. Rather than resisting or feeling overwhelmed by the disorder, we discover how embracing the unexpected can lead to moments of spontaneity and creativity in our teaching practices. Moreover, we delve into the concept of utilizing chaos to our advantage. By reframing chaotic situations as opportunities for growth and learning, we can extract valuable lessons and insights that ultimately enhance our teaching effectiveness.

A key takeaway is the importance of kindness and understanding, even when faced with disrespectful behavior.

In this episode, we dive deep into the realm of music education, uncovering five essential strategies for infusing joy into the classroom without surrendering to chaos. The first part of the episode talks about how to structure your classroom when adding any activity that might introduce chaos.
We also talk about how transitions can help keep the structure savvy and when and where to use them.
Then we delve into 3 strategies to help add fun to the music classroom. First we discuss structured gameplay, where teachers guide students through games with specific rules, fostering a harmonious balance between fun and discipline. Points are assigned judiciously, with personal fouls and disqualifications in place for maintaining order during activities. Whether playing instruments, engaging in physical exercises, or transitioning between lessons, safety remains paramount, and teachers are encouraged to enforce consistent guidelines.
Then we explore creative avenues for learning, emphasizing the power of fun manipulatives and games. From super stretchies and monkey noodles to board games repurposed for music skill challenges, teachers are encouraged to transform ordinary items into engaging tools. Incorporating movement becomes a cornerstone for effective teaching, whether structured or improvised, during activities like dance, line dances, partner dances, and folk dances.
The episode concludes with insights into enhancing listening lessons, advocating for instrument movement, and incorporating dance, creating a dynamic and enjoyable music classroom where structured play and creativity coexist harmoniously.

Keep it Fluffy: We’ll talk about "fluffy" lessons—engaging activities unrelated to units or extensive learning—that allow students to have fun without the pressure of retaining new information.
Practice Your Silly: Let’s incorporate more silliness into the classroom to keep students engaged and excited. I’m going to share examples of quirky teaching methods and suggests finding inspiration from other silly music teachers.
The episode concludes with a preview of the next installment, teasing insights into easing students back into learning after the break with fun activities like name games and the "Back from Break" song. In a recent interview with Bill Henry, an elementary music teacher and YouTube artist, Bill shared his passion and journey in the field of music education. Bill has been teaching for 18 years in the public school system in Maryland, catering to students from pre-K through fifth grade. He initially taught at two schools but eventually transitioned to a single school, allowing him to focus on teaching general music to elementary students, a role he thoroughly enjoys.
One remarkable turning point in his career was right before the COVID-19 pandemic, where he had the opportunity to teach general music, band, and strings, conducting his first concert featuring all these components. Unfortunately, the pandemic disrupted this exciting journey, but Bill quickly adapted and continued his work in the elementary classroom, where he is now primarily responsible for pre-K through fifth-grade general music.
In addition to his teaching career, Bill is the creative force behind the YouTube channel "Mr. Henry's Music World" and the corresponding website. He started his channel around four years ago, initially focusing on offering private piano lessons for children to do at home. However, his channel evolved to provide valuable resources for elementary music teachers. One significant milestone for Bill was the success of his video titled the "Halloween Rap," which garnered 80,000 views in just two days, signaling the beginning of his journey in creating resources for teachers.
Bill discussed the expansion of his content to include a piano course and a new ukulele course for children. His channel features short animated music theory videos that have proven to be incredibly popular among elementary music teachers who incorporate them into their classrooms. The positive feedback he receives from teachers and students alike highlights the impact of his resources and his dedication to making music education engaging and enjoyable for all. Bill's journey is a testament to the power of passion, creativity, and adaptability in the field of education.
Bill Henry's interview sheds light on his extensive career as an elementary music teacher, where he has continuously adapted to meet the needs of his students. His YouTube channel, "Mr. Henry's Music World," has become a valuable resource for elementary music teachers, offering engaging and educational content. Bill's passion for teaching and his commitment to creating effective educational materials have made him a noteworthy figure in the music education community, positively impacting teachers and students alike.

Lindsay Titus, a behavior specialist and educator with over 18 years of experience, has a passion for helping educators redefine their authentic selves and find their inner spark both inside and outside the classroom. In an interview with fellow educator Jeanette Shorey, Lindsay shared her journey and valuable insights into the world of behavior management and authentic self-discovery.
Lindsay began her career as a special education teacher, but her focus quickly shifted from just teaching subjects to understanding and shaping students' behaviors. She realized that addressing behavior issues required an inside-out approach, delving into the root causes rather than merely implementing external changes. Her extensive career in behavior support ranged from teaching to working in residential facilities and non-profit learning centers, finally landing as a behavior specialist for a local school district.
During the interview, Lindsay highlights the importance of educators being authentic and defining themselves outside of their teaching roles. She stresses that educators can and should lead balanced lives that encompass both their professional and personal passions.
Lindsay shared some practical strategies for educators, such as starting each day with a few minutes of gratitude reflection. This simple practice gradually fosters a deeper sense of gratitude, which can be a powerful tool for personal growth and resilience. Additionally, she emphasized the significance of engaging in positive self-talk and learning to love oneself. One particularly impactful suggestion was the idea of having conversations with oneself in front of a mirror, reinforcing personal strengths and growth areas.
Moreover, Lindsay discusses the importance of modeling emotional intelligence and self-expression for students. By demonstrating how to handle emotions in a constructive manner, educators can create a more empathetic and understanding classroom environment. She explains that emotions should be acknowledged, felt, and expressed, as this allows students to learn that they, too, can manage their feelings.
In the context of classroom management, Lindsay advised teachers to consider whether a student's behavior directly hinders teaching and learning. If teaching can continue, non-verbal prompts and visual cues can be used to guide the student. If a student's behavior becomes disruptive, educators can take a moment to connect with the student, using "notice and wonder" language. This approach allows teachers to offer support, understanding, and alternative solutions, helping the student regain focus and control.
Ultimately, Lindsay's message encourages educators to prioritize empathy, authenticity, and self-reflection, creating a more inclusive and supportive learning environment for their students.

In this podcast episode, you'll be offered insights and personal experiences to help alleviate the feelings of overwhelm and guilt that you may face when contemplating taking time off or navigating the challenges of your profession. Jeanette's narrative begins with her own journey from a demanding job to becoming a mother, which prompted her to reevaluate the significance of her work-life balance.
Here are the three key takeaways for teachers considering whether or not to take time off:
Don't Let Guilt Dictate Your Actions: Jeanette advises teachers not to allow guilt to drive their decision-making processes. She emphasizes that guilt often leads to excessive focus on trivial tasks, which can be counterproductive and unnecessary. It's essential to recognize that seeking help or doing things differently is perfectly acceptable and doesn't warrant feelings of guilt.
Prioritize Your Health: The podcast discusses how guilt is rooted in fear and how it can have detrimental physical and mental effects. Teachers are reminded that it's crucial not to let guilt compel them to work when they are unwell. Taking care of one's health should always be a top priority, and staying home when sick is both responsible and necessary.
Avoid Letting Pride and Control Overwhelm You: Jeanette acknowledges that as teachers, it's common to take pride in one's work and want to maintain control over classroom dynamics. However, she advises against letting these emotions hinder the decision to take time off when needed or to adapt teaching methods. It's essential to recognize that others can step in and provide valuable support, ensuring that students continue to learn effectively.
This episode offers valuable guidance to elementary music teachers struggling with guilt and stress in their roles. It emphasizes the importance of self-care, maintaining a healthy work-life balance, and seeking help when necessary. By keeping these three key points in mind, teachers can navigate their profession with greater confidence and well-being.

Harmony in Adversity - Bouncing Back & Thriving After a Challenge**
In this episode of The Happy Music Teacher, we delve into the journey of elementary music teachers navigating challenges and finding their way back to a harmonious teaching experience. I offer three essential tips for regrouping and thriving after adversity.
Firstly, it's crucial to allow yourself a brief moment to have a "pity party." Acknowledge your emotions and grant yourself permission to feel down. Share your thoughts with a trusted colleague or through journaling, setting a time limit for this reflection. Remember, it's a step towards healing, not a destination.
Next, I discuss the importance of regrouping and fixing the situation. Assess what went wrong and brainstorm creative solutions. Collaborate with peers or mentors for fresh perspectives. Embrace adaptability as you make necessary changes to overcome the challenge.
Lastly, I explore the power of focusing on the positive. Shift your perspective towards what's going right in your teaching journey. Celebrate small victories and cultivate gratitude for the positive aspects of your work. Recognize your influence on the growth of your students.
As an elementary music teacher, facing challenges is inevitable. But with these three tips – acknowledging your feelings, regrouping and finding solutions, and focusing on the positive – you can navigate adversity and rediscover the harmony in your teaching journey. Stay tuned for more empowering episodes on [Podcast Name].
In this episode of "The Happy Music Teacher Podcast," we delve into a common issue faced by music educators: perfectionism. Music teachers, as well as their students, often grapple with the pressure to achieve perfection, which can lead to stress and hinder growth. Today we'll discuss 3 valuable strategies to overcome this challenge, creating a more positive and supportive learning environment for both you and your students.
Strategies discussed:
GET OVER IT: Acknowledge that perfectionism is deeply ingrained in us as musicians, but understand that expecting flawless outcomes from ourselves and our students is unrealistic. Accepting imperfection as a natural part of the learning process allows us to move forward, learn from mistakes, and grow as educators.
Don't let the perfectionism monster prevent you from asking for help: Recognize that being an elementary music teacher involves juggling numerous responsibilities. Don't hesitate to seek support from colleagues when organizing programs or dealing with challenges, fostering a collaborative and empowering community.
Embrace Imperfection as a learning opportunity: Shift your mindset to view mistakes and imperfections as valuable opportunities for growth and improvement. Reflect on your teaching journey, and share experiences with fellow music teachers to foster a supportive network that encourages personal development.
Bonus strategy: Practice self-compassion: Understand that as a music teacher, you are also a human with limitations and vulnerabilities. Cultivate self-compassion by treating yourself with kindness and understanding when things don't go as planned. Instead of self-criticism, focus on learning from mistakes and using them to enhance your teaching approach.
By adopting these strategies and embracing imperfection as a natural part of the teaching process, music teachers can create a more nurturing and encouraging classroom environment, ultimately fostering a love for music and lifelong learning in their students. Join us in this episode as we conquer the perfectionism monster and cultivate growth and joy in our classrooms.

In this episode, we'll dive into the transformative power of changing your mindset as an elementary music teacher and how it can lead to a happier teaching experience.
I'll be discussing three actionable tips that can help you cultivate a positive mindset and create a joyful classroom environment.
Tip 1: Letting It Go Like Elsa
Sometimes, unexpected challenges and setbacks can dampen our spirits as music teachers.
Embrace the mantra of "letting it go" like Elsa from Frozen.
Instead of dwelling on negative experiences, focus on finding solutions and opportunities for growth.
Shift your mindset and redirect your energy towards creating a positive and uplifting musical experience for your students.
Tip 2: Embracing Choice for Challenging Situations, Classes, or Students
Encountering difficult classes or students is part of the journey.
Give them another chance and don't assume that they will be the same every day.
Embrace the power of choice as a music teacher.
Try new teaching strategies, explore unique instruments, or get out your fun manipulatives. Then allow your students to create and direct the learning.
Foster an environment that encourages growth and transformation, both for your students and yourself.
Tip 3: Extending Empathy to Your Admin
Sometimes it may feel like your administrators are working against you.
Give them the benefit of the doubt and extend empathy.
Understand that administrators have multiple responsibilities and different perspectives.
Foster open communication channels and collaborate with your administrators to create a supportive and harmonious working environment.
BONUS Tip: Joy Snacking
Introduce the concept of "joy snacking."
Take short breaks throughout the day to engage in activities that bring you pure joy.
Sing your favorite songs, play an instrument just for fun, or dance like nobody's watching, take a walk outdoors, whatever brings you joy.
These joy snacks will recharge your spirit and infuse your teaching with enthusiasm.
Changing your mindset as an elementary music teacher is a journey that leads to greater happiness and fulfillment.
Embrace the power of letting go, choice, and empathy to create a positive and joyful classroom environment.
Don't forget to indulge in joy snacks throughout your day to keep your passion for music alive.
Remember, a positive mindset not only benefits you but also positively impacts the musical journey of your students.

5 May Storybooks to Engage & Entertain Your Students in the Music Classroom.
Today we're going to be discussing five fantastic storybooks that you can use to engage and entertain your students in the music classroom this May. These books cover a range of topics, from Cinco de Mayo to Mother's Day to springtime adventures, and are sure to capture your students' imaginations. So without further ado, let's dive in!
Book 1: "Cinco de Mayo - Senorita Mariposa, by Ben Gundersheimer
This rhyming storybook tells the tale of the monarch butterfly's journey from Canada to Mexico. It's written in both Spanish and English, making it a great way to introduce your students to bilingual storytelling. You can use this book to teach your students about Cinco de Mayo and Mexican culture while also exploring the musical traditions of the region.
Book 2: "The Runaway Bunny" by Margaret Wise Brown
This classic book is perfect for Mother's Day. It tells the story of a bunny who runs away, but no matter where he goes, his mother always finds him. You can use this book to explore the theme of love and family in music, and even have your students create their own songs about their moms.
Book 3: "Let's Go Froggy" by Jonathan London
In this book, Froggy and his dad go on a fun spring bike ride, but not before Froggy has to get ready. This book is a great way to teach your students about the changing seasons and how they can be reflected in music. You can even have your students create their own songs about springtime adventures.
Book 4: "Hands Off My Honey" by Jane Chapman
Bear doesn't want to share his honey, but there's a surprise at the end of this book that will delight your students. You can use this book to teach your students about sharing and cooperation, and even incorporate some musical activities that require teamwork.
Book 5: "Little Quack" by Lauren Thompson
This book is all about Mama duck and her ducklings as they leave the nest and jump into the pond to swim. Except for Little Quack, that is. You can use this book to teach your students about bravery and overcoming fear, and even create your own songs about courage and taking risks.
Welcome to the Move it Groove it podcast, where we explore creative ways to incorporate movement into your elementary music classroom. Today's episode is all about adding more movement to your lessons.
First off, we'll be discussing the importance of movement for kids. Movement is not only a fun way to engage students but also helps with brain development, gross motor skills, and can even improve academic performance.
Next up, we'll be talking about the use of scarves in your music lessons. Scarves can be used for a variety of activities, such as tossing and catching to the beat, waving to the rhythm, and even creating choreographed dances.
Another great way to add movement to your classroom is through walking and jogging activities. These can be done in place or around the classroom and can be used to reinforce concepts such as tempo and rhythm.
Dance is another fun and effective way to incorporate movement. Not only does it promote physical fitness, but it also helps students develop coordination, balance, and teamwork skills.
For those looking to add an extra challenge, a musical obstacle course can be a great option. This can be set up using various objects around the classroom and can include activities such as jumping, hopping, and crawling.
Lastly, we'll discuss how you can use storybooks to add movement to your lessons. By incorporating movements and actions into the story, students can actively engage with the material and retain information better.
We hope these 9 ways to add more movement to your elementary music classroom have inspired you to get your students up and moving. Thank you for tuning in to the Move it Groove it podcast. Stay tuned for more fun and engaging ways to incorporate movement into your lessons.

Concert season is approaching (or maybe it's already here for you). In this episode we'll help elementary music teachers navigate through the challenges of concert season. Today's episode will focus specifically on 3 strategies for managing your concert season. Here's a sneak peak
Don't be afraid to ask for help. Concert season can be overwhelming, but you don't have to do everything alone.
Consider reaching out to colleagues or parent-teacher organizations for support.
Bonus tip - encourage your choir to memorize their words. Consistent practice and repetition are key. Encourage students to practice at home, during class, and in small groups.
We hope these strategies help you navigate through your concert season with ease.

Join me as I interview Kevin & Leah Klein, authors of the brand new storybook, The Showdown Symphony. They've written an adorable new picture book that is Peter & the Wolf-esk, with a theme for each adorable animal and a full orchestration that accompanies this story.
They created their project to be as multimodal as possible, with a book video version, an animated book video version, an ebook version, and an audio file version with music and narration. They hope to create an immersive experience for children and parents, where they can read the book together and then listen to the audio file separately. Kevin & Leah are excited by the possibility of children having a similar magical experience with their project as they did with Peter and the Wolf.

Five Life Lessons from Dr. Seuss:
Episode quotes:
[4:48] Start a journal and write down 3 things you love about yourself every day. Give yourself permission to love yourself and focus on the positive things about you.
[13:19] I feel as long as you're kind about it, people are going to do what you want them to do. So it's always okay to express yourself. If you have big feelings about something, it's okay to express yourself.
[17:32] Behave every day as if your students will remember you that day because they will be joyful in your teaching model. Be patient, be sincere, be honest, and use each class to start over. Even if you just had that class, remember that your next class is coming in excited about music. Take a deep breath and just move on. That's what I like my students to do, and that's what I try to do myself.

Harmonizing Difference - Teaching Acceptance in the Music Classroom
Through music, we can teach about different cultures, different religions, different socioeconomic statuses, peoples’ minds, and bodies that work differently from our own, people who eat differently, people who live differently. The possibilities are endless.
Why should we bother teaching acceptance in the music room?

The origin story of the Happy Music Teacher!
In this episode I share what my classroom was like during my first few weeks of teaching and believe me, it wasn’t pretty. But I figured it out, and I want to help you figure it out too!
My three secrets to figuring out how I wanted to manage behavior in my classroom:
Episode quotes:
[4:10] I knew things needed to change and I knew they needed to change right away. And I am not a person who is going to allow myself to be frazzled or overwhelmed or upset for very long before I do something about it. That's just my personality. I am all about being happy. So above all things, I am going to make myself happy in any way that I can, of course, without damaging anyone else because that would make me very unhappy.
[10:27] What happened next is I continued through trial and error and I developed as a teacher, I developed my behavior management, I developed my systems, I developed my structure, and I began to realize that having a structure in my classroom was a really big deal and having a step-by-step process that I could follow was a really big deal.
