Navigating Mormonism One Episode At A Time

Jodi Hildebrandt is not just the story of one deeply harmful therapist. She is a warning sign about what can happen when mental health care stops being guided by professional ethics, evidence-based treatment, and client well-being—and instead becomes filtered through rigid Mormon beliefs about sin, obedience, sexuality, shame, and worthiness. In this episode, Bill Reel examines the broader problem of Mormon health professionals who practice through a religious lens rather than a clinical one. The issue is not that a therapist happens to be Mormon. The issue is when Mormon ideology overrides sound therapeutic care—when a counselor’s loyalty to Church culture, moral judgment, patriarchy, sexual repression, or “saving the family” becomes more important than the emotional safety and autonomy of the client sitting in front of them. Using Jodi Hildebrandt as a case study, this episode explores how spiritual abuse can be repackaged as therapy, how vulnerable clients can be manipulated under the language of healing, and why Mormon-informed therapy can sometimes function less like treatment and more like ecclesiastical control with a license on the wall. This episode also includes two interviews: one with a former client of Jodi Hildebrandt, and another involving a different therapist whose Mormon worldview appears to have caused serious harm in a very different way. If you’ve ever wondered where the line is between faith-informed counseling and outright therapeutic abuse, this conversation is for you.

If anyone needs extra support as they work through their faith deconstruction, Bill Reel is a certified Somatic Informed Trauma Coach and you can look into his work at https://awakenandthrive.org/

For most of Mormon history, Latter-day Saints believed the Hill Cumorah in Palmyra, New York was the very place where the final battles of the Book of Mormon took place and where Moroni buried the gold plates that Joseph Smith would later retrieve. But in recent decades, a growing number of LDS scholars and apologists have proposed something very different. Because no archaeological evidence exists in New York for the massive civilizations and battles described in the Book of Mormon, many now argue that the real Cumorah must have been somewhere in Mesoamerica. Under this model, the hill in New York is no longer the battle site at all. Instead, Moroni supposedly carried the plates thousands of miles north before burying them in Palmyra.

In this episode we examine:
• Why early LDS leaders consistently taught that Cumorah was in New York
• Why modern apologetics often moves the battle to Mesoamerica
• The archaeological claims used to justify this shift
• Why similarities like pyramids, cities, and warfare are not actual evidence for Book of Mormon peoples
• What evidence would need to exist if the Book of Mormon civilizations were historical
• The logistical and historical problems created by the “two Cumorahs” theory

Is relocating Cumorah a legitimate scholarly development… or simply another attempt to make the evidence fit the claim? Join us as we take a closer look.

Book: A Logical Deconstruction of Mormonism In this book, Bill Reel walks step-by-step through the major truth claims of Mormonism and examines whether they hold up under scrutiny. Using logic, history, and evidence, the book explores the foundations of LDS belief and invites readers to consider the most reasonable conclusions.

In this episode we examine one of the most foundational claims in Mormonism: the translation of the Book of Mormon. Most Latter-day Saints grew up hearing a very specific story. Joseph Smith sat at a table, the gold plates were present, and he translated the ancient record through divine power. But when we turn to the actual historical eyewitness accounts, a more complicated picture appears. Multiple witnesses—including Martin Harris, Emma Smith, and David Whitmer—described a translation process where Joseph placed a seer stone into a hat, buried his face in the hat to block out light, and dictated the text while the plates were often covered, in another room, or not present at all. If the translation did not require Joseph to read the plates… why were the plates necessary?

In this episode we slow the story down and look carefully at the historical sources. We examine the original accounts, the apologetic explanations offered to reconcile them, and the logical implications of those explanations. This is not about attacking belief. It is about asking a simple question: What explanation best fits the evidence?

In this episode, we examine one of the lesser-known but revealing moments in Mormon history: the Kinderhook Plates. In 1843, a set of small brass plates covered with strange engravings were discovered in Kinderhook, Illinois and brought to Joseph Smith. Contemporary accounts record that Joseph examined the plates and began offering an interpretation of the characters, identifying them as an ancient record connected to a descendant of Ham. But decades later, the truth emerged. The Kinderhook Plates were a 19th-century hoax, created by local men to test whether Joseph Smith could truly translate ancient records. Modern metallurgical testing confirmed what the creators later admitted: the plates were manufactured in the 1800s. So what does this episode show? If Joseph had the divine ability to translate ancient languages by revelation, a modern forgery should have been immediately exposed. Instead, Joseph appeared to treat the plates as authentic and even began interpreting them. In this episode

we walk carefully through:
The discovery of the Kinderhook Plates
What Joseph Smith reportedly said about them
The later confession of the men who created them
And what this incident tells us about Joseph’s claimed translation abilities

This is part of a larger series examining the core claims of Mormonism one issue at a time.

If you appreciate this kind of careful, logical examination, my book A Logical Deconstruction of Mormonism expands this approach across thirty major issues—looking at the original claim, the evidence, the apologetic explanations, and the logical implications.

Thanks for listening. And as always, keep thinking clearly.

Why Do People Leave the LDS Church? In this episode of Mormonism Live, Bill Reel and Radio Free Mormon examine a topic that has been discussed inside Mormonism for nearly two centuries: why do people leave the Church? From early sermons by Brigham Young to modern General Conference addresses, Latter-day Saint leaders have offered explanations for why members lose their faith. These explanations often frame departure as the result of deception, pride, sin, offense, or the influence of Satan. Tonight we take a careful look at those teachings. We explore what Church leaders have said historically, how those ideas continue to appear in modern instruction, and how these narratives shape the way believers understand those who leave. We’ll also look at the human side of the conversation: how these labels affect real people, real families, and the possibility of honest dialogue between those who stay and those who step away. This episode is not about attacking belief. It’s about understanding the stories we tell about each other — and asking whether those stories leave room for compassion, curiosity, and honest conversation.

In this episode, we examine one of the clearest translation claims in Mormon history: the Book of Abraham. Joseph Smith said he translated ancient writings of Abraham from Egyptian papyri. Those papyri were displayed, studied, and described as the source of the text. Today, we still have fragments of those papyri. And Egyptologists can read them. They do not say what Joseph said they say. So what happened? We carefully walk through the original claim, what the surviving papyri actually contain (including the Breathing Permit of Hôr), and the major apologetic responses: the Missing Scroll theory, the Catalyst theory, and other reinterpretations. Then we ask the logical question: do these explanations preserve the original claim — or redefine it? This isn’t about mockery. It’s about clarity. If Joseph could translate Egyptian by divine power, this episode matters. And if he could not, that matters even more. If you appreciate this structured, respectful approach to examining Mormon truth claims, my book A Logical Deconstruction of Mormonism expands this method across thirty core issues — one claim at a time. Thanks for listening. And as always, keep thinking clearly.

The Lost 116 Pages — What Really Happened? In this episode, we take a careful look at one of the earliest and most important moments in the coming forth of the Book of Mormon: the loss of the 116 manuscript pages. Believers have long heard the story. Martin Harris takes the manuscript. It disappears. Joseph is devastated. A revelation explains why the pages cannot be retranslated. But when we slow down and examine the logic of the situation, deeper questions begin to emerge. If Joseph had the plates… If he could translate by the gift and power of God… If the original manuscript still existed somewhere unaltered… Why couldn’t the text simply be reproduced? In this episode, we walk through the historical claim, the explanation given in Doctrine & Covenants 10, and the logical implications of that explanation. No mockery. No caricatures. Just the claim, the evidence, and the reasoning. If you are a believer who values truth, integrity, and consistency, this conversation is not an attack. It is an invitation to think carefully about one of the foundational events in early Church history.

And if you appreciate this structured, respectful approach to examining Mormon truth claims, my book “A Logical Deconstruction of Mormonism” delves into this issue as well as many others and can be found on Amazon by visiting https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GQN4178G Thanks for listening — and as always, keep thinking clearly.

When did Fanny Alger actually come to live in the Prophet Joseph Smith’s home and why? This episode takes a careful, historically grounded look at one of the most misunderstood turning points in early Mormon history. Rather than starting with scandal or theology, we begin with something far more mundane and far more revealing: household labor, family obligation, and timing. By reconstructing the sequence surrounding Levi Hancock’s marriage to Clarissa Reed, the sudden death of Mary Beal Johnson, The Mosiah Hancock account, and Emma Smith’s precarious condition, we examine the most plausible reasons Fanny Alger was brought into the Smith home in the first place. From there, we explore how later memories, compressed timelines, and evolving theology reshaped those early events into something very different from how they likely began. This episode does not assume intent where the evidence doesn’t require it—but it also does not look away from where the evidence eventually leads. We examine competing interpretations, the role of Levi Hancock, the question of a later “sealing,” and why the scandal likely emerges years after Fanny first enters the home. If you’ve ever been told this story started with polygamy, secrecy, or divine command, this conversation invites you to slow down and ask a more basic—and more important—question: What problem was being solved when Fanny Alger first arrived?

Nemo the Mormon was recently summoned to a Disciplinary Council by his local church leaders in Oxford, England. While his Membership Council letter was vague on the exact reasons why this council is being held, he has some pretty good guesses. He recently went on LADBible and flew down to America to speak at the McKinney, Texas City Council. Nemo has also been a staple in the LDS Discussions series and hosts his own channel where he focuses primarily on the statements and remarks of current LDS leaders to determine the truthfulness of those statements. Additionally, recently leaked training material indicates that President Oaks is pushing Mormon leaders to conduct more of these Disciplinary Councils. Our hearts go out to Nemo during this difficult time and we ask for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to do better. In this episode “Latter-day Lattes,” Bill Reel delves into a thought-provoking article recently published by The Salt Lake Tribune, titled “Why More and More Young Latter-day Saints are Drinking Coffee.” The article sheds light on the growing trend of coffee consumption among young members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) in spite of of LDS Commandment in D&C 89 to abstain from coffee and other substances as part of the word of wisdom. Our discussion begins by examining the historical context of D&C 89 known as the Word of Wisdom which prohibits coffee within the LDS community, exploring the evolution of attitudes towards this caffeinated beverage. The article highlights the experiences and perspectives of young Mormons who have chosen to incorporate coffee into their daily lives.

We hear personal anecdotes and reflections on how this decision intersects with their faith and sense of identity within the LDS community. We examine perspectives on the evolving relationship between religious doctrine and modern lifestyle choices, including the consumption of coffee. We also explore the potential impact of this shift on the broader LDS community, considering how it might influence intergenerational dynamics and discussions surrounding faith and cultural traditions. “Latter-day Lattes” seeks to provide a platform for understanding and appreciating the diverse experiences of young Latter-day Saints navigating this evolving aspect of their faith journey.

Rarely in Mormonism do people in disagreement sit down to enter conversations about the issues upon which they disagree with understanding and healthy dialogue being at the forefront. But LDS Faithful believer Jacob Hansen and Ex-Mormon atheist Bill Reel sit down to discuss a Mormon Testimony, how one could arrive at a LDS Testimony, and how one derives confidence in it. The goal of this conversation as well as any that may follow or come before is to create a space where both parties seek to best understand the other’s point of view and to have a safe space to add clarity and context to one’s perspective to ensure as little misunderstanding as possible. Most of us as believers had experiences we would define as spiritual. As we deconstructed our religious world we had to confront those experiences and look at them, sit with what they were and weren’t and attempt to re-define them in a way that allowed us to make sense of them within the lens of our Mormon faith not being true. Today Carah and Bill discuss their past spiritual experiences and discuss ways they have been able to confront and process those in light of deconstruction.

Rarely in Mormonism do people in disagreement sit down to enter conversations about the issues upon which they disagree with understanding and healthy dialogue being at the forefront. But LDS Faithful believer Jacob Hansen and Ex-Mormon atheist Bill Reel sit down to discuss Faith Crises, what they are and what they mean for those going through them. The goal of this conversation as well as any that may follow or come before is to create a space where both parties seek to best understand the other’s point of view and to have a safe space to add clarity and context to one’s perspective to ensure as little misunderstanding as possible. The hope is that these conversations give listeners a well rounded view of controversial issues so that they might be able to work out their own thoughts, beliefs, and perspectives in a safe environment and to show both sides that healthy disagreement can in fact happen.

RFM has received the the video and audio from his second information request and report back regarding what was turned over by law enforcement. Once again we learn new details that both add clarity and complexity to this case.

BONUS AUDIO: We inserted the cut up audio clips of all three witnesses that we had audio interviews of focusing only on the moment in the hotel room where the traumatic event likely occurred. Notice Bonnie’s admitting she heard the youngest kid but then struggles to answer finally stating she did not hear Derek or the parents in spite of all the yelling and screaming that both parents acknowledge along the way. After her clip are multiple clips of Hana and Nolan where Nolan stammers about what he awoke to finally imposing over multiple points in the interview that Hana was already awake and out of bed dealing with Derek when he awoke out of his sleep but juxtaposed against Hana who intimates at two different points in the interview that her and Nolan seem to have awoke together to the crying of the child and both in an escalated voice tell him to be quiet. Nolan also at one point claims he yelled at Derek to be quiet but how can such be when Hana in both her interview and her re-enactment indicates she screams at Derek in Bed that “he is not breathing”

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints claims to be led by Prophets, Seers, and Revelators. That these men are special witnesses of Christ. That they speak to God and discern his will for us. Latter-day Saints are taught that these men are like Moses, Noah, and Abraham. We take a look at these claims to see if in fact there is observable evidence that can help us evaluate if these men are Prophets in deed.

Most faithful Latter-day Saints pay tithing on their gross income with a few paying on net income. But do the historical documents and past teachings of Prophets, Seers, and Revelators support either of those two interpretations? We take a deep dive into the historical context exploring D&C 119, A First Presidency Letter in 1970, old manuals and handbooks, Heber C Kimball, Lorenzo Snow, Joseph F Smith, James E Talmage, and even the words of Bishop Edward Partridge who was the very First Bishop in the Church along with getting a modern clarifying statement from Church Historian Steven Harper about how “interest” has been interpreted in Church History. In the end a third interpretation rises to the surface that will allow every believing faithful member to save themselves Thousands of Dollars while still living the law of tithing faithfully.
