Most people do not see God at work in their personal life and, therefore, do not see how to join Him. The Divine Appointments podcast reminds us to be encouraged in our faith because God is at work all around us if our eyes are open to seeing His hand. My hope and prayer is that, by hearing these stories, you too will engage where God is already working and discover God’s mission for your life.

Today, we share a new "Faith Test": My breast cancer diagnosis. We love the definition of Faith: "Commitment Before Knowledge."
This is another opportunity to walk with a limp. Jacob wrestled with God and, forever after, walked with a limp. It is an opportunity to present ourselves as living sacrifices, for if even one person is drawn closer to Jesus Christ. We have studied the Shema recently: Deut. 6:4-5. "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might." Deuteronomy 6:4-5 ESV
Dr. Meredith Travelstead from The Woman's Clinic was the Mission Speaker. She spoke on the mission of the American Society to advocate and support patients. She encouraged us to be "the tribe" in support of our breast cancer heroes. "We THE TRIBE have hope and that is why we fight. Let's continue this fight TOGETHER with our breast cancer heroes!"
From Ole Miss to Zambia, Africa, from Campus Crusade for Christ to rural Central Africa, Mary Margaret and James have been walking in faith where God leads them. “Wherever you are, be all there.” They have raised tree children in Africa. They have hearts for the Zambian people. They follow Jesus with whole hearts, mind, soul, and strength. Take the next step in faith. Now living in the capital city of Lusaka where they serve as mission directors and home school kids, they are also leading college campus ministries all over the big city. God continues to have them being used “All there wherever they are.”

He is a Survivor of a “real life concentration camp” in his home country of Cambodia. His father was killed in front of him. He was separated from his mother and family at 6 years old. He was placed in a work camp and fed once a day. He escaped at 10 years old on foot, and eventually, he found his mother at a special meeting place. Years later his family was able to move to Memphis, TN. Reading a Cambodian Bible he was taught John 3:16.
For God, so loved the whole world. He thought Jesus Christ was the God for the white folks. He realized Jesus died for him and his people, and the whole world. “Why do they (Christians) love my people. Why do they love like they do? I want to be like that.” “For God so loved the WHOLE world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 ESV
Partner where God is already working. “Quit looking for one and be one.” This means quit looking for someone else to stand in the gap. We discuss 2 ways you can change a child’s life. For whom will you take personal responsibility? We are challenged as Christians, to stand up and be willing to help a child.
Help us snatch these kids out of the fire.

A move to a different apartment complex. A knock on his door. An invite to church. God took an 8 year old boy and elevated him physically, emotionally and spiritually. Now look at Maurice. He is a warrior for Christ, seeking to bring other kids and adults into the family as well. He is now mentoring the next generation.

Look behind this bubbly, funny, beautiful person and see a lady who has had extreme personal trauma and who walks with a limp. See someone who was doing personal fitness and whom God stopped in her tracks and changed her focus. She says, “I took a hard pivot to lead with my faith.”
She humbly acknowledges that she was looking for “validation in my accomplishments.”Listen to how she allowed God to tear down the walls she put up, be vulnerable, and share her story. She allowed God to take away her shame. Now, her focus and enthusiasm is on fire!

At the Abide Women’s conference I share some of my family story of “walking with a limp” and how God grew my faith through struggles. He said “no” to taking away my difficulties and taught me to say “yes” to His better plan.

Mississippi Senator Jenifer Branning is a faithful wife, loving mother, committed attorney, and state senator who is now running for a position on the Mississippi Supreme Court. She explains her Mississippi roots, how she got involved in state government, and why she believes her next step is as a MS Supreme Court justice. ”Looking at this incredible lady who has been a foreign missionary, a hospital chaplain, a dance teacher, a mother and a wife, you could never imagine her time of despair and tragedy. There was a day she walked in with a 1yo, 2yo, and 3yo to give her husband back her wedding ring and walk away for good. But the Holy Spirit said, “Don’t do that!” Jesus pursued her and her husband, brought their family out of darkness, and they have now served Him through an incredible, bold, faith adventure.

Cindy is a minister yet in one the scariest times of her life, diagnosed with a brain tumor, she learned to completely trust God with her life. She claims God’s goodness in her life. He makes the bitter lemons in our life become sweet blessings from Him.

God brought this man for a third time back to Hillcrest Christian School to take the helm and guide the school into its future expansion. Betty discusses her 66 years of marriage and how she and her husband Eddie have grown stronger together. During difficult times God always showed His purpose. On a pull-out writing board from Eddie’s desk at Fox Everett, he recorded many sayings and verses which became their strength and life lessons. Betty published this as a book. The Kinchens teach us to rejoice always.
Tonya Marsman felt lost and hopeless. She was looking for love and acceptance but found this only in Jesus Christ. Her work friends kept asking her to come to church. She finally accepted. Her life was changed by their obedience.
God pursued a shy little boy out of a difficult childhood and disappointment, being a bouncer in a bar, and being on the brink of divorce through complete surrender of his life to Jesus Christ. Look what’s happening at this church!
Why do we have New Year’s resolutions? Are they biblical? We all make them. What about remembering the year? What does God command us to do? The cure to anxiety is thankfulness. God asks us to remember and be thankful. This gives us the faith (commitment before knowledge) to follow Him.

Jessi and her husband were called to reach an unreached tribal group in Papua, New Guinea. They spent 9 years in the remote part of the country where they lived with a tribe, learning their language, writing their language and sharing the Bible with them. They experienced spiritual warfare on the front lines and learned to more deeply understand the supernatural worldview of the Bible and the power of our Lord Jesus. She fell in love with her Bible at a young age and still teaches it today.

Peter tells us that we should “arm ourselves with the same attitude as Christ” in that we should spend the all of our time “concerned about the will of God.” We explore the Hebrew word “sama” which means to listen, understand and obey.
Amazing life story of Dr. Tobe who is strong Christian, family physician, researcher, professor, book writer, minister. He grew up in Nigeria and became a born again Christian at age 16. He spends his life as Christ’s example wherever he goes. He prays that when someone meets him they will say they met someone who “looks like Jesus.”
Stan continues to praise the Lord for how He uses “But God Ministries” to not only meet physical needs but also to bring the knowledge of Jesus Christ to the Mississippi Delta. This is darkness to light, despair to hope, lives forever changed.
Stan tells us the amazing way God has walked him through career changes from lawyer to pastor to starting a non-profit ministry. He keeps taking the next step in faith learning to trust completely in God. Listen to the darkness he describes in the country of Haiti and how Jesus is bringing His light there. Stan’s excitement for seeing God work in this ministry is contagious.
Jamie shares her amazing journey of being pursued by Jesus Christ and then prepared for the work He has for her to do. She has an incredible story of walking by faith and waiting for the call and plan God has for her, step by step.
There is a painting in the waiting room of Dr. Michael Livingston that depicts Jesus watching over a surgeon in the operating room. The plaque on it says “Chief of the Medical Staff.” Dr. Livingston bought this painting and displays it as he also lives by its words. He reflects on his life and how God “carried him through” so many events of his life. He imparts wisdom of treating each patient as if they were his own family.
Trey Carroll knew from a young age he wanted to be in the ministry. He wanted to see the world and make his impact on the world. After a major stroke, Trey has recovered physically but he says he has been forever changed on the inside.
“Each one of these cases is one little living soul, so the stakes are high.” Andrea’s goal is for us see these children as “Mississippi’s children” and these families as “Mississippi’s families.” These are the most vulnerable families of our state. She is working to take care of and provide a brighter future for almost 3,600 kids. Her “first responders” are the social workers who field over 30,000 phone calls to their hotline every year. Have you ever thought of foster care or adoption? Consistency and stability for these children will change their life trajectory long-term.
Dr. Mike McMullan is a cardiologist. He shares his life story, including a miraculous recovery from a biking accident. For years he has been mentoring students at work, but also opening his home to them as well. He and his wife Missy share the love of Christ weekly with students, demonstrating how to live out their faith.
This is a continuation of the conversation with a couple dealing with his long-time same sex attraction and God pursuing him even as he was a pastor. They discuss healing in their marriage and how a ministry was begun. “God loved us when we were enemies and sinners and ungodly and helpless.” The key to extending both grace and truth is relationship with others. The Selbys encourage us to do this in our spiritual walk. From bondage to freedom. From darkness to light. Lives changed.
As early as Hal could remember and through their first twelve years of marriage, Hal secretly struggled with same sex attraction until God got his attention. You must hear the story of God’s pursuing love and His amazing grace. Unbeknownst to either Hal or Lisa, God was already preparing them for the journey they would soon face.
In honor of the Fourth of July holiday, meet Eddy Waller, a military hero who served our country being activated 3 times and with 2 deployments. He discusses military life and what it taught him. He is so proud of our country. But his days during tours of duty were not his hardest day. Loss of his sister was the most difficult. “I couldn’t have made it without my faith.”
Dr. Boteler shares the journey of his life discovering his career was purposed for him to use as a ministry. He learned to listen to the Holy Spirit and continues to seek out opportunities to share the gospel today.
Listen to Rebecca Turner, a registered dietitian, who explains her own history of disordered eating and how so many suffer in silence. She talks about warning signs, perceptions, and causes of disordered eating and even eating disorders. She gets to the true remedy which is looking at our wellness as worship of our Creator. She encourages us to recognize the abundant life that He truly has for us.

Jeff and Star Lott have a church called City Lights ministry which grew out of the roller skating business in their family for years. Jeff was radically saved by God at age 37. Since then, he and Star have been using their business to reach their community for Christ. They have seen miracles and changed lives.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16 ESV “

Listen to this remarkable story of the Brannings whose faith became very real during the diagnosis, treatment and later loss of their son Scott. They describe complete dependence on the Lord Jesus. They are thankful they were given “bonus years” and that they know where Scott is now.

This week I am especially burdened by the school shooting in Tennessee, and by other major attacks on our youth even in my own community. This is a call to action, recognizing the battleground of attacks on our youth, and in our families. We must arm ourselves with the heavy artillery of prayer.
“Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.” 1 Peter 2:11 ESV
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints,” Ephesians 6:10-12, 18 ESV
This is Grace Gebhart, an “overcomer,” who speaks about a sudden tragedy when she was 15 years old. She talks about how it has changed her. She now uses this “accident” and its effect on her life to minister to others.
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us,” Hebrews 12:1
Within 2 years of losing her father to alcoholism, Courtney received another devastating blow with the diagnosis of her daughter with Retinoblastoma, eye cancer. She remembers the fear and questioning of God, but then He showed her so many miracles along the way.
“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” Romans 8:26 ESV
This is a story of a tragedy of suicide that rocked this family but also how God has now used it for His plans to help others through Marcus.
“And you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.” Mark 13:13
Courtney talks about loss of her father from alcoholism and how she has felt God strengthening her faith since that difficult time. She is now being obedient to share her story in order to help others. We talk about how depression leads to addictions. She discusses grief, saying goodbyes, and healing from loss of a family member. We often think there are Super Christians who have it all together. Katie Eubanks is editor of Mississippi Christian Living magazine. She has had her struggles and doubts in her faith. She had a crisis of faith and then finally put those questions down and placed her faith in Jesus Christ. She was encouraged to continue to ask questions which has deepened her faith. Now her ministry allows others the ability to share their stories.

Meet two people who were forever changed by the love shown to them by the Baptist Children’s Village. Bobby’s father had left and his mother told the judge she wanted nothing to do with him. God placed Chrystelle and her 9 siblings into this home when she was 16. God has not forgotten the widows and the orphans. He is the father to the fatherless, and he provides family for the lonely.

Why has there been such a spike in suicide in the past 5-10 years? 9 percent of all students in grades 9-12 have attempted suicide in the past twelve months (The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention). Adolescents are bombarded daily by a world telling them WHO they should be and how to project the right IMAGE. Preston Crowe, a counselor and minister, helps us examine the crisis of suicide as well as depression and anxiety. How should we as Christians respond?

Drugs are an incredible force of evil against our children. I sat down with Angie Mullins who shares her story as a mother who lost a son to overdose. In the midst of crying out to God, Angie says, "great is thy faithfulness. His mercies are new every day and God is generous with them. Every day there is a new wellspring of goodness that God intends for me.”

For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.” Romans 8:26-29 ESV
I have a conversation with my husband Joel Travelstead discussing the start of my Divine Appointments podcast. We discuss the use of God’s “moed” or “appointed times” through the scripture which are evidence of His interaction with us. He uses divine appointments in our lives. It is up to us to recognize them. We are challenged to partner with God where is He is working in the world.

I sat down to speak with Dr. Jim Futral, and what an inspiration this man is. Dr. Futral has been a pastor for more than 30 years and was head of the MS Southern Baptist Convention for 22 years. There are those who preach and those who lead and there are those who do both. When you are in his presence, you leave a better person.
