How can a trader and investor make a difference for small businesses?
Investor, investment advisor and VC fund manager Lydia Idem is well acquainted with career pivots. Although she started her career in computer science, she made the switch to forex trading when she was still young and now invests in companies primarily located in Africa that work to solve problems for locals in their region.
Lydia discusses how her mother was able to set her up for a financial success at a young age, and especially how her mother introduced her to the forex market. She explains why she believes that forex is so perfect for beginner traders and what makes it so accessible, as well as how that instrument fits her personal trading style and how she’s able to apply the lessons she’s learned trading forex to other assets.
Accessibility has been a driving force throughout Lydia’s career, and not just through trading forex. She explains why investing in other businesses isn’t solely up to venture capital firms - individual investors can be involved as well. Her goal for her own business, FM Capital Group, is to show people how accessible venture capital can be and how to include it as an asset class in their portfolio.
Lydia Idem is an investor, trader and investment advisor, and is managing director of FM Capital Group and COO of LoftyInc Capital Management. She has been investing in startups for the past 17 years, but has expanded her portfolio into Africa and hopes to make an impact for small businesses around the world. She values accessibility in the markets and, through FM Capital Group, works with angel investors in the African diaspora to fund businesses in both Africa and Latin America.

How can jumping out of a plane make you a better trader?
Kira Turner is a professional trader and co-moderator of T3 Live’s Inner Circle room, but she’s also a rodeo competitor, skydiver and scuba diver. She credits her participation in extreme sports with her ability to remain calm and manage risk in her trading, and she explains why risk management is so crucial in this episode of Madam Trader.
Although Kira was initially drawn to trading because she was able to find success early on, she still relied on a mentor to show her how to manage risk and find the right trades. She believes every beginner should have a similar mentor, someone who is experienced and can help them to parse through the overload of information that can be found online.
And some of those beginner traders belong to Kira’s own family. She’ll discuss how her kids are becoming interested in trading and the advice that she is giving to them as they get started in the markets. But she is setting them up for financial success outside of trading, too. She talks about how she teaches them to be responsible with their own money and how she educates them on financial literacy at different stages in their lives.
Kira Turner is a professional trader and has co-moderated the Inner Circle trading room after starting as a room member. She traded at Cornerstone Securities from 1994-2001, and re-entered the pro trading arena after managing a large real estate investment portfolio. Kira is an extreme sports enthusiast and enjoys skydiving, scuba diving, and competing in rodeo. She is based in Austin, Texas.

Professional author, trader, and CEO of thetradingbook.com Anne Marie Baiynd talks about the mindset that all traders need when they approach the market and how she learned those traits from her family. She also goes through the pivots she’s made in her career, moving from neuroscience research to owning her own business to being a successful trader.
Baiynd credits her attitude to her success in the market - as a beginner, she struggled with being able to admit when she was wrong, but now she knows when to take a hard look at what she’s doing wrong and what she needs to change. Coming from a family of immigrants and business owners taught her how to persevere and stay humble, and her late father taught her how to stay positive even in the face of trouble.
And she’s no stranger to keeping her cool in the face of major change. Baiynd started her career as a neuroscience researcher, which sparked her passion for science but didn’t come with a lucrative salary, so she switched to recruiting and running her own business. As an introvert, she burned out quickly in an industry that required her to be outgoing. But she landed on trading after hearing a speaker at an event talking about technical analysis and thought “I can do that!”
Anne Marie Baiynd is a professional author, trader, and CEO of thetradingbook.com. After working as a neuroscience researcher and entrepreneur, she has traded professionally for 19 years and now mentors other traders through trading seminars and her esteemed book, The Trading Book.
