The coffee flavor wheel is a visual representation of the various taste profiles that coffee can exhibit. It helps to organize and understand the complex nuances of coffee flavors. While there are many variations of the coffee flavor wheel, they generally include a central core of neutral flavors and then radiate outwards to more specific taste profiles. This page is a clean example of the full wheel. This version is interactive providing a greater level of detail The Core of the Coffee Flavor WheelAt the center of the coffee flavor wheel lies a neutral core, often represented by terms like “balanced,” “clean,” and “sweet.” These coffees are considered well-rounded, without any overpowering or unpleasant flavors. They are a good starting point for those new to coffee tasting, as they offer a baseline for comparison. Radiating Outwards: The Flavor ProfilesAs you move outwards from the center, the flavor profiles become more specific and pronounced. Here are some common categories found on the coffee flavor wheel: Parts of the wheel Several factors can influence the flavor profile of a coffee, including: Coffee Bean Variety: Different coffee bean varieties have unique flavor characteristics. For example, Arabica beans are generally considered to have a […]

Tucked away on Mill St in Bristol PA is Calm Waters coffee roaster. A lovely little cafe that serves their own roasted coffee. The roaster is off site but near by. I stopped in with my family to sample some of their faire. The shop was nice and clean, the staff was friendly and the coffee tasty. Not much more you can ask for. As is my usual go to I had a cold brew and an espresso. I also sampled a pastry, a coffee cake. My wife and daughter had a vanilla cold brew as well. My wife is not a hardcore coffee drinker, she likes sweet things and her beverage was great. She said she usually has to add sweetener to coffee when we visit these little ships but the blend they used for the cold brew was mild and not bitter in any way. Very palatable and enjoyable. There are only 3 flavored syrup options available but I drink my coffee black. And they had vanilla so my wife and daughter were happy My cold brew was very mellow with subtle earthy tones, hints of chocolate and stone fruit. Not bitter at all, smooth mouth feel and […]

Every year we as coffee drinkers help produce 22 billion pounds of used coffee grounds. Most of that waste ends up in landfills releasing methane and other greenhouse gasses. I personally add the used ground to my garden and indoor plants but that only takes care of so much. The rest goes in the trash. Not the best option. Scientists are working on killing two birds with one stone, cement. You see cement uses sand which has to be mined and it’s a finite resource. The type of sand they use is environmentally damaging as it’s not the same type of sand you find on the beach. And we are constantly looking for new sand deposits. All of this affects the environment. What if we could take one problem and eliminate 2? You can’t add raw grounds to the concrete because organic compound break down and weakend the structure. But, by heating used coffee grounds using a process called pyrolysing they can turn the ground coffee into tiny bits of charcoal. This charcoal can be added to concrete mix and produces a finished product that is 30 percent stronger than regular concrete. Now any time you come up with a […]

Flavors from around the world can seem odd. Flavors of various products here may seem odd to other countries but we can all get behind an interesting flavor debuting somewhere. Enter coffee flavored Doritos. I’ve had coffee encrusted steak and hamburgers but a chip? Sadly it’s only available in Australia. But maybe a bag could find it’s way to my doorstep. That would be awesome. I love a savory take on coffee maybe slightly salty. But this seems just crazy enough to work. I only hope it’s not latte flavored so many coffee flavored things have cream and sugar in them too approximate a flavored beverage. I like coffee flavored coffee. Give me single origin chips, artisanal flavor combinations

Running through the options available in the grocery store lately. I only buy whole bean coffee so I’m always looking for good value. This week we have Peet’s Coffee, big bang medium roast. It was on sale for 6.99, which is a deal but unfortunately it was even smaller than the new normal off 12 ounces down to 10.9. not a fan of this trend. The place I usually buy my good coffee from, Ocean City Coffee Company still sells coffee by the pound. I’m a fan of that I can deal with higher prices for the same amount of coffee, but when you bump the process and shrink the product it’s anyone and crappy. So how does this smaller offering stand up? Well I’m happy I got it on sale 10 or 12 bucks for 10.9 ounces of coffee is too much but $6.99 was worth it. The coffee was flavored and medium bodied. Good mouthfeel with a clean back end. The roast characteristics really come through. It was a little nutty with earthy notes. Not a bad cup of coffee. I made it as an espresso and French press. I did the French press both hot and cold […]

Coffee is a wonderful drink but not all methods of making coffee are equal. One of my least favorite methods of brewing coffee is sadly the most convenient to make. The Keurig. So polar but so many problems. I brew coffee with a Keurig machine in work because it’s easy and available. I used to have a full coffee station in work, grinder, drop coffee but I’m downsizing my footprint and the new office has a Keurig machine in the common area. What are the problems with the Keurig? For one the waste. Each k cup is thrown in the trash and while there are biodegradable options most of the k cups are little plastic cups so not biodegradable. So instead of throwing a paper filter and organic coffee grounds in the trash I’m getting rid of plastic. Not fun. So I limit myself to one cup of coffee in work. I can but a refillable k cup. And I might do that. The second problem with the Keurig is that the coffee is stale. No clue how long before they were purchased, or ground and packaged, probably months. No matter when you bought it. Nothing compares to freshly ground […]

Driving around with my wife, I love when we spot a cafe and have a moment to stop. We drove by the White Horse Coffee and Creamery in Jenkintown Pa recently. It was earlier in the morning so we didn’t sample any of the ice cream but it’s nice to know the option is there. The cafe was warm and cozy. Lots of people and a short fast moving line. Friendly staff and lots of smiles. Overall a welcoming atmosphere. I bought three drinks a cold brew with sugar free vanilla syrup for my wife, a nitro cold brew for me and a double espresso for the road. Whenever I try out a new cafe I always get an espresso. You can tell a lot about the place by the quality of the espresso. The espresso had a good thick crema on top was silky smooth and awesome. The espresso had notes of toffee and almond. Overall a good espresso and one of the better ones I’ve had recently. The nitro cold brew was smooth and full bodied. As is always the case with nitro coffee the head on top of the coffee was silky. The coffee itself was great. […]

I was recently gifted a bag of the funnily name Rising Cock coffee. The flavor that I had was the Caffeine Climax. The coffee is advertised as highly caffeinated. But how does it taste? Inspecting the bag I don’t know how it’s higher caffeine, is it robusta? Is it just a varietal that has a higher caffeine content… Who knows. Similar to other high caffeine brands on the market, it promises a lot but how does it stand up to taste tests. However unlike many other high caffeine brands this brand is not roasted to within an inch of its life. Usually all high caffeine brands are dark roasted oily bean messes. This one was pleasantly medium or city roast. In addition to being roasted appropriately the coffee smells wonderful. It has pleasant warm earthy tones. I brewed it three different ways. Cold brew, French press and espresso. When I received it for Christmas it was recently roasted and fresh. As an espresso it was slightly bitter with decent mouth feel. Nice crema and good body to the cup. I can’t attest to the caffeine level beyond suspect personal experiences. It has a decent kick as an espresso. It got […]

I’m always on the lookout for new coffee roasters to try. I was at the Christkindlemarkt in Bethlehem Pa recently and one of the vendors was Hrysek Farms. The coffee being ground smelled fantastic so I just had to try it. I bought the Papa New Guinea coffee, it is a medium roast and with a warm brown color with very little oil on the beans. The coffee smells amazing like dark chocolate with bits of dried fruit. The flavors are nuanced, while the bag says dried fruit and spiced chocolate I didn’t get any spiced notes when I was drinking it. I brewed it in a French press, I’ll try it as an espresso later on. I got more of a dark chocolate bits when brewed both hot and cold. As a hot coffee the brew really shines. The flavors are bold and wonderful. So if you are looking for a new roaster to try I would suggest giving Hrysek Farms a try.

I love traveling with my family and being the coffee lover I am they know what to expect when we see a coffee shop. We are stopping and sampling. I recently visited the Christkindlemarkt in Bethlehem pa at the Steel Stacks. Wonderful location and a great event. But there was a coffee truck on the premises. Travelin Tom’s Coffee truck was sitting right inside the venue. I had an Americano, my wife had a peppermint mocha and my daughter had a French vanilla coffee. Now this is a good trick so it could be anywhere and it’s a franchise so there are more than the ones I visited. But I feel comfortable in recommending this truck. The American was smooth and flavorful, I drank mine black with no sweeteners and it tasted phenomenal. My wife’s peppermint mocha was on point and by her own admission better than Starbucks. Now my wife loves Starbucks so this is high praise indeed. It was not too sweet. My daughter asked if the French vanilla coffee would be sweet or not and the lovely people running the truck Matt and Andrea Russell told her it would be on the lighter end of sweetness so […]

Every year Starbucks debuts their resistable red cups for the holiday season and gives them away free with a holiday beverage purchase. I don’t drink a lot of overly sweetened coffee concoctions but I like free stuff. This year my wife got a pumpkin spice latte and I got an oatmeal chestnut praline latte. Gotta try something new every once in a while. Secured our free reusable cups and had some tasty beverages to boot. From what I heard the pumpkin spice latte was well done but from my own experience the chestnut praline latte was very good and sweet but over 400 calories for one large drink. I’m not a fan of drinking my calories usually so this is definitely a sometimes food. But for the holiday season a nice treat. How do you enjoy coffee beverages for the holiday season? Is there a special something you look forward to? I love the fall so I’m all about Apple cider at this time off the year. But give me black coffee any day.

There are a ton of espresso machines on the market at all different price points. I have reviewed some of them. But I have yet to write a review of a good portable espresso machine. In my opinion for it to work it has to be consistent, easy to use, and safe. Making espresso means a lot of pressure being put in a small place to properly extract the espresso. I have read somewhere that you need 10 bars of pressure to properly create the crema on the top of espresso. That’s a lot of pressure in something handheld. I think I finally found a winner in the portable espresso market. The Product I was sent the Staresso Portable Espresso machine to review. When I opened the box I was impressed with the build quality. It seems sturdy and compact. Both pluses in the portable game. I would feel comfortable throwing this in my bag to take to work. The pump locks in place at the top of the unit with a simple twist and the whole thing screws together and is easy to disassemble to clean. You can use this unit with hot or cold water. I’ve tried both. […]
