The tension between standardized testing and holistic education is explored in this conversation. The speaker discusses the negative impact of test scores being everything in schools, causing stress and anxiety for both students and teachers. On the other hand, the speaker also highlights the challenges of implementing a poorly defined holistic approach, leading to inconsistency and confusion. The importance of finding a balance between assessment and holistic education is emphasized, with clear goals and training for teachers. The need for different assessment methods, such as project-based learning, is also discussed. The overall message is that education should not be a one-size-fits-all approach and that students should be given multiple ways to demonstrate their understanding.

Principal Thomas has been in the education field for 39 years, starting out as a secretary and then going back to school to get her teaching credentials. She began as a first-grade teacher, a tough grade to teach in Texas because children there don't have to go to pre-k or kindergarten, meaning they often come in with no knowledge of basic concepts. However, Principal Thomas found joy in watching her students grow and learn throughout the year.
Principal Thomas emphasizes the importance of structure, love, and support for her students, especially since her school is a Title 1 school. She believes that her students need someone to show them that they can do hard things and that they are cared for, which is often lacking.
Principal Thomas has stayed in education for so long because of her love for her students and the knowledge that she is making a positive impact on their lives.

Hey there everyone,
Please welcome the one, the only, Ms. Kaya Arnoux back to the pod!! Kaya is a former colleague of mine who has transitioned from teaching middle school kiddos to highschool kiddos. Like others in her situation she explains how this transition isn’t better or worse, just different.
In this convo we get into the nitty gritty of the age-old debate: Is the current education system properly equipping our high school students to live the adult lives they want to live??! Or are we funneling them into the big ole “everyone must go to college” machine to make our numbers look good?
Why don’t we properly prepare those students who know EXACTLY what they want to do, and that they DO NOT want to go to college/university? Do they get proper guidance into certificate programs or training to be taken while in high school?
We also get into how minorities need to be able to decide for themselves whether or not they are safe (mentally and physically) in PWI spaces, or if they need to remove themselves. One option isn’t better than the other, and we need to give people autonomy to make their own life choices.

Hey There Everyone,
In this week's episode of the podcast I get to chop it up with Dr. Rebecca Good, National Vice Provost of Teacher Preparation at Relay GSE. Get ready for some profound insights into the world of education.
My perspective, as one of the 1.3% black male educators, on the significance of authentic teaching, cultural understanding, and empowering students helps me be the best educator I can be.
By prioritizing authenticity, transparency, and nurturing student potential, teachers can create an environment where students thrive academically, emotionally, and socially.
As educators, let's strive to be authentic, transparent, and supportive mentors for our kiddos. By fostering genuine connections, we can empower our kiddos to unlock their full potential and become lifelong learners and leaders.

Hey There Everyone,
This week I get to chop it up with Tearanei Carrington, an educator who was initially in criminology and forensic psychology but shifted to coaching and eventually teaching. Tearanei talks about how she felt the need to teach after seeing the poor quality of education her students were receiving, and the lack of teachers who understood and empathized with their struggles. She discusses how she wants to be the kind of teacher she never had and help her students navigate life's challenges. She also highlights the importance of having more educators from diverse backgrounds to better understand and support students from all walks of life.Mrs. Carrington also shares about her experiences teaching in special education and how it differs from general education. Mrs. Carrington shares that while she did not enjoy teaching general education, she found a passion for teaching special education because it allowed her to work with students who were often marginalized and misunderstood. She notes that many black students with behavioral issues are referred to special education, and she wanted to be there to advocate for them and help them succeed.

He hopes to bring this engaging perspective to the rest of the world and show that math is not just about solving problems but about exploring new and interesting questions.

Hey There Everyone,
In this episode I chat with Mr. Kevin Kirkland, a black male educator with a winding journey into the profession. Mr. Kirkland started as a Spanish major in undergrad but had to leave college due to hard times. During his time away, his mother, a paraprofessional of 35 years, suggested he become a substitute teacher. Mr. Kirkland took her advice and eventually landed a paraprofessional job. When he was able to return to school, he switched his major to liberal studies and eventually found his way into the classroom.
What is most striking about Mr. Kirkland's story is his willingness to try different positions within the field, even if they weren't a perfect fit. He tried teaching general music in middle school, fourth grade, and seventh-grade science, before leaving education for a year and a half to work in the non-profit sector. Mr. Kirkland returned to teaching second grade, where he found his true calling. His story highlights the importance of finding one's niche in education and recognizing the grades or ages of children with which an educator best interacts.

Hey There Everyone,
In this episode I chop it up with Destin Mizelle to discuss his journey as a black man earning his PhD in psychology.
One key takeaway from this conversation is the importance of mentorship. Destin noted that he didn't have many mentors in the psychology space, but was fortunate to find Dr. Isha Metzger, a black woman who took him under her wing and helped prepare him for a PhD program. Dr. Metzger even pushed Destin to pursue a PhD rather than just a master's degree, citing the financial benefits of finding funding for a PhD program.
Another interesting aspect of Destin's story is the flexibility that earning a PhD in psychology provides. He noted that the degree opens doors to a variety of career paths, including academia, research, therapy, consulting, and even politics. This flexibility is particularly appealing to Destin, who says that he gets bored easily and likes to have the option to switch careers if he wants to.
Overall, Destin's story is a powerful reminder of the importance of finding one's passion and seeking out mentors to help achieve one's goals.
This was a dope conversation that I know you will enjoy.

Hey There Everyone,
In the latest episode of the podcast I chop it up with Vernae Meadows, a business owner and hair stylist who also works as an instructor in the hair industry. Vernae shares her journey of how she got into the hair industry and how it eventually became her career.
Vernae's love for hair can be traced back to her childhood, where she spent a lot of time in her great aunt's salon. She started out by sweeping floors and assisting her aunt with her clients. At the age of nine, Vernae got her first break when her aunt was unable to work due to an injury, and Vernae took over by putting relaxers in her clients' hair. This early experience fueled Vernae's passion for hair and eventually led to her pursuing it as a career.
Despite her love for hair, Vernae struggled with academics in school until she met her chemistry teacher, Miss Yates. Miss Yates took an interest in Vernae and asked her pointed questions about her future aspirations. She then made a concerted effort to show Vernae how chemistry applied to the hair industry, which resulted in Vernae achieving straight A's in her classes.
This conversation between Vernae and myself highlights the importance of having a mentor and the impact they can have on a person's life. In Vernae's case, her aunt and Miss Yates played crucial roles in her career and academic success. Their guidance and support helped Vernae realize her potential and pursue her passion.

3 pieces of advice for a first year teacher / Episode 74 / Conversation with Kevin Holloway Harris
PART 02
Hey there everyone,
In this episode of the pod, I am so excited to have Kevin Holloway Harris back again.
Kevin is a former colleague of mine who’s been working the last 3.5 years as a full-time sub and has now transitioned as a full time teacher. He comes from a family of teachers and grew up in a realm of education himself, like working at summer camps. One of the main reasons that I’m so excited about this interview is that Kevin has the unique experience of working as a sub mostly through pandemic and “post-pandemic” (if we can even call it that) times.
I really appreciate how Kevin is actively looking to better himself and the art of teaching.
I offer some advice and strategies that have worked for me and may work for him and perhaps you.

This interview is so dope and you don’t want to miss it!

Check out Kaya on IG where she shares her thoughts and art with the world:

Hey There Everyone
This is part three of my conversation with Akeem Oguande.
Find the time and make the time to take care of your self. Also have you been able to learn from someone who you don't care for too much? Let me ask you the question a little bit differently. Could you have learned more if it was someone who took an interest in you and made the content they were teaching come alive and made it applicable to what you were going through at the moment in time?
As educators we have the opportunity to keep a flame alive or snuff it.
We can and should look to connect with the kiddos in front of us. It's not easy but it is not impossible.
In this episode we talk about some things that have worked for us.
Thanks for listening

Hey There Everyone,
In this episode I get to chop it up with an amazing educator, Akeem Oguande. Akeem and I worked at a middle school where we both taught math. He was with the 8th grade kiddos and myself with the 6th graders. Akeem is the second Black male educator I have had the honor of working with and in the conversation we touch on WHY and HOW to take care of one's SELF.
We talk alot about SELF care however in this episode we explicit touch on what works for us in the hopes that it may benefit you as well if you're listening.
We touch on that you shouldn't wait until a mandated holiday such as Thxgiving break or Winter break to administer that care, doit now. Today. This afternoon. This weekend.
A great educator and even better individual. So glad we were able to work together.

Hey There Everyone,
I wanted to drop a PSA your way as we come to a close of this month of October; or as I now come to refer to it: SHOCKTOBER.
I first heard the word "Shocktober" when I was a new teacher. I remember that in September, I loved teaching, my students, and my school. I couldn't believe that I was coming to school every day and have the most amazing interactions and experiences working with middle school kiddos. That was September, and then the calendar changed to October.
It appeared to me that overnight, my kiddos became apathetic and talkative. My paperwork demands doubled. Student learning declined, and I had more meetings to attend that I could have ever thought possible.
It was October, and I thought to myself: "What in the what what is going on!?! And, What. The. Heck?" I remember talking to my mentor at the time, and I told her that I was overwhelmed, and I just didn't understand how everything that was once golden, all of the sudden turned so bad. She smiled and told me that I had the Shocktober blues!
October is the month when the "honeymoon" phase of school is over. Usually, the first six weeks is over, and students and teachers begin the real work of learning. Concepts become more difficult, days become longer, literally less daylight and the excitement of starting a new year has waned. So, we are in Shocktober at my current school, and it is very typical of every October that I have experienced since the beginning of my career. Our days are busier, and the curriculum is getting harder. Students are consumed with extra curricular activities and hanging out with friends.
So, as i send this PSA your way, it is important to me that my kiddos parents and fellow teachers understand and remember that although there may be a few tears this month (and you may want to pull your hair out,) October doesn't last forever.
It truly is only 31 days long!
Once Shocktober is over, the best part of the school year happens--> Thanksgiving break, Winter break, and then the New Year.
Hang in there. The Shocktober blues are almost through.
As always thanks for listening to another episode.
Peace out
~Mr. Pierre

Hey There Everyone,
In this week's episode I get to chat with Meekerley Sanon.
Meekerley is an experienced charter school leader, passionate educator and charismatic leader. She is first-generation Haitian-American with roots, growing up in Lawrence, MA. Meekerley is currently an Ed.D in School Leadership candidate at Boston College in addition to holding a Master of Science in Nonprofit Management from Northeastern University and a Bachelor of Science in Brain & Cognitive Sciences from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
In this episode she talks about the choices she has made that's led to her current role and how one goes about finding their tribe, their people and how to go about widen that circle.
It was a great conversation to have and I know you will appreciate the gems dropped.

Hey there everyone,
I hope that as October rolls in you are doing well. It's usually at this time of the academic year that kiddos start to experience ShockTober (or maybe it's you who is experiencing it) its that feeling of the summer malaise being definitely all the way gone now and kiddos are showing all of their wonderful facets of themselves and you, well you are already thinking about the next break and how it can not come soon enough.
I hope you're taking care of yourself.
This podcast has been therapeutic because it's allowed me to chat with folks and see that within this teacher community we're not only in what we are experiencing and it's great to be able to glean some tips and encouragement from others.
In this episode I chat with Kuiana Blackwell who has transitioned out of the class and into a leadership role at a new school.
She talks about what it's like stepping into a new role, what it's like to have to not be stressed and how good she's feeling.
It's a refreshing conversation that I hope lifts you up as we roll into October.

Hey there everyone, I was able to have a great conversation with a great History teacher, Kayla Buch who is now teaching High school kiddos after spending some time teaching middle school. One thing she stated that resonated deeply with me was that "it's not about you". As teachers we will have a lot directed towards us and much of the time it's not about you.
But what do you think? Let me know your thoughts

Hey there everyone,
What's it like teaching on each coast? From Cali to NYC and then back to Cali again.
What's it like starting your teaching career and then having a pandemic strike?
For Jai Williams these were question she didn't just hypothesized about but lived through.
And as a dance teacher at a charter school there's one thing she will never do again.
I'm grateful for being able to have had this conversation with Jai and I know you'll glean a few gems as well.

Hi there everyone, today’s episode is with Principal Sanon.
In this episode we talk about compensation, salary and how to negotiate. This is a dope conversation that frankly I wish I had heard when I first started teaching. Knowing your worth is one thing but knowing HOW to advocate for yourself is another. I normally would break this conversation into at least 2 parts however I’ve received feedback that as the year comes to an end and conversation regarding contracts that this is a conversation that some of y'all are going to want uninterrupted. So here it is.
As always THANK YOU for the support I greatly appreciate it. I also appreciate those of you who have left a review of even a few words on apple podcasts. If you haven’t I would like to take this moment and ask this of you now, please head over and drop a few nice words because it helps get this podcast out. With that being said, thanks for tuning in to this episode of The Chronicles of Mister.

Hey there everyone and welcome to another episode of the chronicles of mister. In this episode I chop it up once again with Principal Niki Reid. I love Niki's energy and it’s always a joy. In this episode we talk about several things but the idea and belief that “every child is 1 positive adult away” from being on a path towards their greatest potential is one that resonated deeply with me. I’d venture to say that we’ve all had not so great teachers , however I’d venture to guess that we’ve had at least one adult who saw or recognized potential in us. All kiddos need an adult in their corner who sees what is unseen to the child and lights a sparks that leads to that achievement down the road.
Are you a spark? Could you be?
This conversation is a great one and this pod is part 3 of 3.

Hi everyone and welcome to the Chronicles of Mister. Today’s podcast is with Jonah Craggett. I had the honor of working with Jonah at a charter school in New Haven Connecticut where we were the only Black male teachers in the middle school. We were hired due to a cohort of kiddos who were labeled as “too much” for the other middle school teachers.
However, what myself and Mr. Craggett came to see was that that group of kiddos just needed to be validated and seen, which is what we did. We were able to liberate the “too much” kids with love as the great Maya Angelou eloquently put it. In this conversation. Mr. Craggett and I talk about validation, authenticity and unlearning certain practices.
This conversation is a good one and this pod is part 3 of 3.
Here at the Chronicles of Mister we appreciate feedback and we would love to hear what you think of the conversations we've had.

This conversation is a good one and this pod is part 2 of 3. The other 2 parts will be dropping later this week.
Here at the Chronicles of Mister we appreciate feedback and we would love to hear what you think of the conversations we've had.
What would you like to hear more of?
What are topics that should be further discussed?

Hey there everyone,
This week’s guest is not only an actor, producer, director, and writer… but he’s also a high school math teacher! Mr. Marcus G Flye. He also comes from a very interesting background - like his father worked on the first space shuttle, nbd.
In this interview we touch on so many amazing topics: showing your students real world application, using shock and awe to engage them, and remembering the power we hold as educators - we’re one person that can make a lasting impression on many for good or evil, so we need to remember to be the educators we needed. The educators or students deserve.
And as always, we remember to think about and do the things that bring us joy. So hit play and I hope you guys enjoy.

Hey there everyone,
On this episode of the pod I chop it up with the one and only, Quincy Dawson, aka TheGreatestTeacherofAllTime. We dive into some really good stuff! We talk teacher journeys, reflect, and discuss the importance of “being the teacher I always needed”.
Quincy also shares a new avenue that he is taking in his teaching journey which leads us back to the song I have been SINGING to y’all: YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE IN A CLASSROOM TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN EDUCATION.
Education as a whole has so many different avenues and spaces and there will always be a NEED for someone to fill them! Could that be you?
If you’re thinking about or already in education, but aren’t sure the classroom is for you, you’re not gonna want to miss this!
Check out the great stuff Quincy is doing!

Hey there everyone,
In this episode of the pod, I am so excited to have Kevin Holloway Harris. Kevin is a current colleague of mine who’s been working the last 2.5 years as a full-time sub. He comes from a family of teachers and grew up in a realm of education himself, like working at summer camps. One of the main reasons that I’m so excited about this interview is that Kevin has the unique experience of working as a sub mostly through pandemic and “post-pandemic” (if we can call it that) times.
We discuss operating in a world where physical interaction with the kiddos is so different (do we high five? Fist bump? How do we have a confidential convo 6ft apart?). We also talk about exploring new classroom tactics and “playing the opposite” - tailoring our approach to the kiddos in front of us and the importance of giving the respect you require and simply asking your kiddos “How would you like for me to teach you today?” .
This interview is so dope and you don’t want to miss it!

Hey everyone,
In this episode I get the chance to chop it up with Dr. Barry Harris who is currently in Hawaii. I first met Dr. Harris back when we were both serving kiddos in Georgia. He was an Assistant Principal and I was a classroom math teacher. It has been a while and it was great to hear his journey into education and how his spirit of service has guided him thus far.
I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did!

Hey there everyone,
In this week's episode of the Chronicles of Mister , I get to chop it up with a former colleague who I worked with back in New Haven, CT, Dr. Thomas Mitchell.
This was a great conversation with an individual who I felt "saw" me as an educator and gave me space to grow as a teacher. I am so grateful to have been able to reconnect with him and to give him his flowers and thanks as an individual who fostered a space for me and Mr. Craggett to be our fullest blerds and infuse joy and wonder into the kiddos we served.
An absolute joy to speak with Dr. Mitchell

This conversation is a great one and this is the last part of our conversation.
Niki has a book that you can get off of Amazon --> it's entitled Now We Write Book

Hi everyone and welcome to the Chronicles of Mister. Today’s podcast is with Nikilia Reid.
Principal Reid serves at a charter school in Hartford Connecticut. I had the dope honor of working with Niki at a charter school in New Haven Connecticut where I was able to glean watching her being a Master teacher who was aware of her sphere of influence.
In this conversation she discusses some of the struggles she has faced, how her voice was "too much", why education needs to change in regards to credentials, why certain models of education work for some areas and not in others and how control needs to be released so that both teachers can reach their full potential and how kiddos can become who they without restrictions or constraints.
This conversation is a great one and this pod is part 3 of 3.
Niki has a book that you can get off of Amazon --> it's entitled Now We Write Book

This conversation is a good one and this pod is part 3; the final part of our conversation.

I get the opportunity to finish up my conversation with Principal Sanon about the realities of teaching. In our conversation she drops gems on why it's so important to be at a school that "sees" all of you, why it's important to have a admin team that helps you grow by being explicit and why representation is so important.
