Lauren Elise Barnes is a Sex Educator with a decade of experience working in the Maternal Health realm and founding a 501(c)3 non-profit called The Motherhood Collective in her hometown of Lynchburg, Virginia. Lauren I met in our Holistic Sex Education program (through the Institute for Sexuality Education & Enlightenment) this past year.
In this episode, Lauren eloquently shares a bit of her remarkable journey through and out of purity culture and an abusive marriage. From her most rock-bottom moments, she continued to put one foot in front of the other, taking care of both herself and her daughter, while planting seeds in her community of fellow Mamas, eventually leading her to start The Motherhood Collective.
Just this past year, Lauren decided to step down from her role with The Motherhood Collective to pursue her new calling as a full-time Sex Educator. Lauren specializes in working with Purity Culture Survivors.
Please note, this episode does mention trauma and marital abuse. Please listen to your body and honor whether you feel comfortable with these topics today or not.
Thank you so much for listening!

When we feel called to share our vulnerabilities, I believe it connects us at our deepest depths of humanity. And this episode is one of my more vulnerable shared moments.
When we say, "Hey I need some extra support right now" or catch ourselves isolating and feeling alone and choose to tell one other trusted person, we begin to let light in. Our freedom lies in community and in letting others hold us when we need to be held.
In this episode:
- Reflecting upon my travels through Italy & London during the past few months (some of the profoundly beautiful and some of the challenging moments)
- When our "grand plans" are nothing like what we expected
- Who are we when we're not constantly 'doing' the things that we usually equate with our identity - Reference: "We can Do Hard Things" podcast episode with Luvvie Ajayi Jones
- When our nervous system tells us "this ain't it!"
- My first concert since before the pandemic and it was EVERYTHING (David Keenan in London)
- My post-travels "Wintering"
- Letting ourselves be held when we are at capacity
- We are worthy, just by being
- Grappling with the disconnect on Instagram
- Taking the next step that feels good and brings peace -- Sharing my next life step.. back to Italy!
- Building our toolkits: letting emotions move through and processing, taking time to rebuild from within, reaching out to our people and using our resources (therapists, counselors, coaches, mentors, trusted friend(s), etc.)
- A Spotify Playlist for your listening pleasure - "Coffee, Walks & Toolkits" https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4dUMxtU4VibPiqgOcYC1mH?si=ab50290176d94d1b

Ren Trevizan is a solo world traveler, entrepreneur and all around badass of a human. She is a full-time nomad and makes the most of wherever she is in the world each day.
This is a two-parter because apparently Ren and I could chat for days about our love of travel and living an unconventional life.
What we chat about:
- How we finally became fast friends after living one floor apart for months in Austin
- When and why Ren began traveling
- The bliss parts and the hard parts of solo traveling
- Redefining "adulting"
- Life is WAY too short to stay in an unfulfilling job and our feelings around those who tell us how miserable they are at work... quick answer... only YOU have the power to change your circumstances!
- The city that has stolen both of our hearts
- How Ren makes this lifestyle work for her
- Staying healthy and fit (physically & mentally) on the road

This is actually the first episode I recorded for what was originally the Creative Cultivation Audio Series. We're now officially in Podcast land so I'm excited to re-launch this first episode to share with you!
This episode is about consent, a topic that, as a Sex Educator, as a woman and as a human, I feel deeply passionate about. It's actually the topic that made me want to start this podcast in the first place.
I believe consent is a living, breathing organism in intimacy, in relationships, and in life.
Let's expand the conversation around consent.
Thank you so much for listening!
