Today blossomed brightly and it looked ok
As you stepped upon your sidewalk of dreams.
Then as you looked around on your way across town,
You spied a shortcut lyin’ under your feet.
How did we hide from each other for the first two years?
Then it hit me in the following fall,
Watching in the hallway til I saw your face
Deep in the crowd and far from my call.
So our eyes didn't meet until we finally met,
And I helped you hang your posters on the wall.
How long I’ve watched the water flow by me,
And wondered what great distance it may flow.
For I came to this world bent on seein’ everything,
As if time had no hold on me, you know.
It's no use now, no chance of denying what we know,
Of the ways you'll make me miss you when you go.
You've told all your reasons, done your explaining too;
Put me in your place, I might do just the same as you.
But the hope I put in you forever now will never show,
Nor all the things about me that you will never know.
I met you in the first-time turn of your eyes,
I spoke and made you look my way.
Took but a moment, I was quick to realize
There stood I, locked deep inside your gaze.
How good you called and made your way to visit me, old friend.
It’s been so long since we sat down, at last those years will end.
It’s great to have you bring the news and old times back with you,
And the people, be they good or bad, that we both one time knew.
