S06_E03 - Tick-Talk! We're Talking Tick-Borne Illnesses

With Special Guest: Dr. Diana Zychowski, MD, MPH

Ticks are usually really small, but the fear factor around them is HUGE - and for good reason! These little menaces are responsible for Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Alpha-Gal syndrome, and other illnesses you might not have even heard of, and this can produce a lot of anxiety around going outdoors during the summer months. But what's the truth around these little hitchhikers? Is there really that much cause for concern? And how would you know if that fatigue, headache, lethargy, or muscle ache isn't just from being dehydrated while toughing out another hot Summer in Minnesota?

Joining us on Episode 3 is Dr. Diana Zychowski, an infectious diseases specialist at Hennepin Healthcare, and she'll help us get wise with the basics on these bothersome bugs. We'll talk about the current state of ticks in Minnesota, the myriad illnesses they can carry, what to do if you happen to get bitten, and most importantly, the best tips for how to still get out and enjoy a little of the outdoors this Summer. We hope you'll join us!

S06_E02 - Snack Attack! A Primer on Peanut Allergy

With Special Guest: Dr. John Sweet, MD

Peanuts may be small, but for the millions of Americans that are allergic to them (and their parents) they can be a HUGE red flag, and something that can change how and what they eat for their entire lives. From mild hives to severe anaphylaxis, steering clear of "Nature's Perfect Snack" actually makes perfect sense. But who's most at risk? Can you ever grow out of it? And is a peanut even a nut? (It's not!)

Peanut allergy in children has tripled since the late 1990s and for years the advice was simple: avoid peanuts entirely. But that advice, it turns out, may have been part of the problem! On our next show we'll be joined by Dr. John Sweet to talk all about the evolution in understanding around this all too common condition. We'll go over the effects on the body, how the allergy is diagnosed, available treatments and the latest thinking around how to keep those affected as safe as possible. Join us!

S06_E01 - High Temps, Higher Stakes - Medications and Substances vs. The Summer Heat

With Special Guest: Brit Culp, ADCT, CPP

Summer is finally here, and with it, the HEAT - and yes, the PARTIES! Whether it's a bar night out, a concert, a festival, or a PRIDE event, the heat can have a big impact on how much fun we can have, and the ill effects can oftentimes be compounded by the prescription drugs, recreational drugs and alcoholic and caffeinated beverages that might be in our bodies. But how do these substances amplify the effects of the heat? Which ones should we be most concerned with? And what are some of the best practices to "party smart"?

Research suggests that as temperatures rise, overdoses do, too, so on Episode 1 of Season 6, we'll be joined by Brit Culp (ADCT, CPP) to go over all of the do's and don'ts of adult summer fun. We'll cover some of the most concerning medications and substances, how to keep the downsides to a minimum, and why the "Lower and Slower" concept is your friend. The summer heat is no joke, and it's even less funny when it turns a would-be good night into a trip to the ED. So join us and get wise on how to have a good time, safely - and happy Pride!

S05_E14 - Hot Takes on Burns

With Special Guest: Dr. Jon Gayken, MD

We've all been burned at some point in our lives - whether it be by the stove, by the sun or, possibly, even by our lovely Winter weather (yes, frostbite is a burn!). For starters, they hurt; but there are all kinds of burns and there can be a lot more to them depending on the severity. But what is a burn exactly? What happens in the body when we get a burn? And what are the best steps to take after you accidentally grab that hot pan?

On Episode 14, we're talking all things burn with Hennepin Healthcare's Burn Center surgeon Dr. Jon Gayken. He'll walk us through the medical side of burns, the different types, how they're classified and the different treatments for each. Plus we'll take a look inside the elite work being done at Hennepin Healthcare's Burn Center and how they're both helping patients and families through what are often extremely tough times. Burns can be really scary, and they're something we don't think about until they happen, but knowing more about them can help take a bit of the sting out. Join us!

S05_E13 - Too Important to Lose

With Special Guests: Susie Emmert and Jessica Oaxaca

What if one of Minnesota's most essential healthcare lifelines wasn't there when you needed it? We're talking about a Level I Trauma Center for both Adults & Pediatrics, the state's busiest emergency department, and a critical safety-net hospital for the most vulnerable in our state. Most of us may know of Hennepin Healthcare for its emergency care, but there's a lot more to it. It plays a much broader role in our state's healthcare system, and it's safe to say we'd all be at a massive loss without it. But what happens when an indispensable system like this faces a real financial cliff?

On Episode 13, we'll take a closer look at Hennepin Healthcare/HCMC and the current financial challenges it's up against. We'll sit down with Susie Emmert and Jessica Oaxaca, two of Hennepin Healthcare's advocacy and public policy leaders, to discuss what is putting the system under pressure, why it matters far beyond Minneapolis, and why the stakes are so high this time around. We'll even share how you can help ensure that this state institution staple remains here for many generations to come (or you can click on the links below). After all, it's way too important a place to lose. Please join us!

S05_E12 - Hyperbaric Medicine - What the Heck is That?

With Special Guest: Dr. Thomas Masters

Pressure makes a diamond, and as it turns out, higher atmospheric pressure can help our bodies heal, too! Welcome to the world of hyperbaric medicine, where patients climb into a chamber, breathe pure oxygen at higher-than-normal atmospheric pressure, and let their bodies do something remarkable — heal faster than they ever could at sea level. It sounds like science fiction, but it's been around since the 1600s, and today it's FDA-approved for everything from stubborn wounds, to carbon monoxide poisoning, to radiation injuries. But how does it work? Is it safe? And what's it like inside that chamber?!

On Episode 12, we'll sit down with emergency medicine physician Dr. Thomas Masters, who will walk us through the basics of hyperbaric medicine, how it works, the conditions it treats, and of course, what it's like to spend time inside the chamber (bring a book...). This is a great chance to learn about a fascinating part of medicine, that most people have never even heard of, from an expert in the field. Join us!

You really can't escape the marketing tactics of GLP-1s these days - because they're everywhere... Although they were originally meant to treat type 2 diabetes, these drugs have emerged as one of the most significant medical breakthroughs of the past decade. But is it all roses? Who should take these drugs and for how long? What happens when you stop taking them? And who comes up with these names, anyway?

One Episode 11 we'll be joined by Dr. Maureen Martin (PharmD, MPH) to get to the bottom of the most pressing questions around these metabolic "miracles". S05_E09 - Healthcare on Wheels! We're Talkin' Mobile Health

With Special Guest: Sheyanga Beecher, CNP, MSN, HMP

There are many barriers to healthcare within our communities, and for a lot of people, access itself remains the greatest challenge. Finding the time or reliable transportation to reach a clinic or hospital can prevent patients from receiving essential treatments, often allowing simpler issues to grow into far more serious conditions. Thankfully, mobile healthcare is reshaping the way care reaches patients - meeting people where they are and changing healthcare outcomes for the better, for all of us. But what do these programs actually entail? What services do they offer? And what does it take to deliver quality care on the move?

On Episode 9 of our show, we'll be joined by Sheyanga Beecher (CNP, MSN, MPH), the Director of Hennepin Healthcare's mobile health program. We'll go over the origins of mobile health, the real-world impact it's having on our communities, and why these programs extend far beyond the people they directly serve. HIV in 2026 looks much different than it did when it first hit mainstream media in the early 1980s. S04_E22 - Why Medicaid Matters for Everyone...

With Special Guest: Susie Emmert - Sr. Director of Advocacy and Public Policy

It's probably pretty safe to say that the healthcare system in this country is complicated, at best, and something that's only made worse by politics. The recent passage of "The Big Beautiful Bill" has put an often debated, seldom understood and always essential piece of the healthcare puzzle in jeopardy - that being Medicaid. But what is Medicaid exactly, and what role does it play for individuals and providers? How is it different from Medicare? Why is it under such scrutiny? And why should I care if I'm not on Medicaid?

There's a lot of reasonable confusion when it comes to Medicaid and the passing of this recent bill, so we thought it was time to bring in an expert to help us untangle it - a little, at least. Susie Emmert, Sr. Director of Advocacy and Public Policy at Hennepin Healthcare will walk us through some of the basics of Medicaid, how it applies to healthcare at both a patient and system level, and the effect the Big Beautiful Bill is expected to have on it (it's not pretty). Think changes to Medicaid won't effect you? Tune in and get wise to why this is definitely something that will affect us all.

It's one of the most common chronic conditions today, and it's a condition that's often misunderstood and easily oversimplified. Diabetes isn’t just about sugar—it’s about science, lifestyle, and the small decisions that shape our health every day. But who's most at risk? Is it at all reversible? Can GLP1 drugs actually help? And is cream always a bad idea?

The truth is, it's a complicated subject since there are many types and origins of the condition, and on Episode 20, we'll untangle it with one of our top docs at Hennepin Healthcare - endocrinologist Dr. Allison Estrada. We'll dig in to how diabetes develops, what happens in the body, and why early detection and consistent management are essential. From diagnosis to treatment options and the latest help from the pharmacy - this is a great chance to get wise on a condition that's simply all too common in our society. We hope you'll join us!

S04_E19 - Hunger, Health, and Hope: Tackling Food Insecurity

With Special Guests: Dr. Dianna Cutts, MD, and Amy Harris

It’s pretty hard to concentrate, work, or pretty much do anything while you’re hungry. And while, for many of us, hunger is a passing moment, there are far too many children and adults living with this as a daily reality. Food insecurity extends well beyond the physical effects of being hungry. It can be a major stressor on the daily lives of kids in school, their parents, and our society as a whole. Hunger, the world over, is a critical issue, and in our first-world, modern American society, this definitely merits a deeper look.

On this episode of our show, we’ll dig into the complexities of it with the help of two special guests from Hennepin Healthcare. Dr. Diana Cutts is the Chair of Pediatrics and a nationally recognized leader on the subject, and Amy Harris is the Population Health Program Director and a champion of building healthier communities. We’ll go over everything from the impacts food insecurity has on both children and parents, and how those effects play out in our society as a whole. We’ll also talk about the stress it causes on families, the importance of bringing it to the fore in a clinical setting, and what can be done to help at an individual, community, state, and even national level. Food and nutrition are essential for human survival, so it’s safe to say food security is essential for the survival of our society. We hope you’ll join us.

S03_E22 - Caring Beyond Cure - Exploring Hospice Care

A birth is something that is often prepared for and certainly talked about without reservation, but conversations about death and dying can be difficult and something many of us would like to avoid whenever possible. Although that's understandable, these conversations around end-of-life are likely among the most important ones we can have with those we love and our healthcare providers.

Hospice might be one of the most misconceived subjects in modern healthcare, and is, in fact, something that can be a liberating and even joyful experience for the individual and their loved ones. It not only involves the doctors and nurses who give the necessary medical treatments, but also social workers, spiritual caregivers, and complimentary therapists from various specialties including massage and music. On the next episode of our show, we'll be joined by Dr. Mariam Anwar, MBBS, who will help us get a better understanding of hospice, what it entails, and the positive role it can play in end-of-life experiences for patients and their loved ones. Death and dying is a weighty subject that all of us will need to address at some point in our lives, and we hope this episode sheds light on helpful ways this can be approached with grace, dignity, and compassion. We hope you'll join us.

POTS is one of the more mysterious subjects in medicine in recent years, and although it's been around for quite some time, it has really come to the fore since the COVID pandemic. The multitude of symptoms around pots are enough to make your head spin (if it wasn't already) and it turns out that physical therapy(!), of all things is one of the more effective methods for treating this all-too-common condition. We'll find out why on the next episode of the show, when we break down POTS with Dr. Miranda Langford, PT, DPT at Hennepin Healthcare. She's an expert on POTS and we'll talk about who's at risk, how it's diagnosed, and how people living with POTS are finding effective treatments for this condition that seems more prevalent every day. S03_E20 - From Hurt to Healing: The Power of Being Trauma-Informed

Today, we're diving into a topic that's crucial but often overlooked: adverse childhood events (ACEs), and trauma-informed care (TIC). According to the CDC, nearly two-thirds of all U.S. adults have experienced one or more ACEs. That’s how common they are, and the effects of these adverse events can add up over time. Many of us may not realize how deeply early experiences of stress, neglect, or trauma can shape not only our mental health but also our physical well-being. These early events leave a lasting imprint, whether through relationships, behaviors, or even how our bodies respond to stress. The good news? There's a growing movement toward trauma-informed care, which shifts the focus from asking 'What's wrong with you?' to 'What happened to you?' It's about creating a supportive environment that fosters healing and resilience.

On Episode 20, we’re talking about different types of traumas, and how trauma-informed care is a unique and very effective approach to help people get through the toughest times. Joining us is Dr. Mitch Radin, he’s a Clinical Psychologist and an expert on trauma-informed care at Hennepin Healthcare. We’ll cover the elements of TIC, how they work, and how this approach is making a difference not only with patients but also with healthcare professionals. Did you know you can control your heart through your lungs? Or have you ever heard the analogy that your brain is like a rider and a horse? We cover both of these things too!

S03_E18 - Face It, It Hurts...Understanding Orofacial Pain

Toothaches! Neuralgias! Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD)! Apart from these being great Scrabble words, they are also just a few things that fall under the category of Orofacial Pain. Any one of these conditions can severely impact our daily lives, with wide-ranging effects that can extend well beyond pain. They can affect the way we eat, speak, breathe, and even how we feel psychologically. But like many things in healthcare, we're left with a few of the same questions when it comes to Orofacial Pain. What causes these conditions? How are they diagnosed? And, what help is available for those suffering from them? And does BOTOX really have a role in medicine?

On Episode 18 of our show, we'll be joined by Dr. Maram Taema, who will walk us through this relatively new focus in medicine and discuss approaches that can make a difference in the lives of those affected by Orofacial pain. She's a Dentist, Oral Surgeon, and a specialist in these conditions and will provide practical tips for diagnosing and treating these conditions - both inside and outside the dentists' chair - including the magical relaxing power of the letter "N". S03_E17 - Beyond Medication - Effective Strategies for Pain Management

On a scale of 0-10, where is your pain right now? We've all been asked that question at one point or another, but really - think about where it is right now. Most of us experience some level of pain throughout our daily lives that we manage in one way or another, and oftentimes we assume that the best tools for dealing with pain are medications. But they've got their downsides, too, and more and more, we're finding out that medications are not the only or even the most effective, means of dealing with chronic pain.

Pain is individual, so there's not always a one-size-fits-all solution, and on Episode 17 we'll re-shape the conversation around pain with Dr. Catherine Justice, an Integrative Physical Therapist at Hennepin Healthcare. We'll look at how our brains interpret pain, how our thresholds can shift throughout our lives, and explore effective pharmacy-free practices for dealing with pain like breathing techniques, mindfulness, and movement therapies. The rise of community violence has become an alarming issue in many areas, impacting the daily lives of residents, law enforcement, hospital personnel, and the overall health of neighborhoods. As these incidents increase, they bring with them a host of health (and life) problems that extend beyond immediate safety concerns. Understanding the causes and effects is crucial for developing effective strategies to restoring peace and stability, and breaking the cycle of community violence. And in Episode 16, to help us understand all of this, we are joined by Kentral Galloway, Director of the Next Step Program in Minneapolis.

The Next Step Program is dedicated to providing resources and immediate support to survivors of community violence. Kentral and his team are also instrumental in deterring future violence and fostering positive healing and a better future for those individuals and families affected. We'll have a candid conversation about what is happening in our communities, and share some of the intervention and prevention strategies that are being implemented to help curb these disturbing trends. You'll even learn how "narrative medicine" can be a helpful elixir.

S03_E14 - Brainstorms and Breakthroughs - The Science of Strokes

Chances are we've all known someone who has suffered a stroke, and it turns out they're a lot more common than we might think - nearly 800,000 people in the U.S. every year. Brain health is essential to our wellbeing and suffering a stroke can have profound and even life-altering effects, assuming the patient survives the event. But how can we identify a stroke? What should we do when we see one? What treatments and therapies are available - or better yet, what can we do to protect our brains?

May is Stroke Awareness Month, and on Episode 14 we'll have the big brain on brains on our show, Neurologist Dr. Behnam Sabayan (MD, PhD) who will help us get our brains around this essential topic. We'll go over what happens in the brain, risk factors, treatments, and outcomes for patients, as well as what keeps our brains happy and healthy. Since time is of the essence whenever someone is having a stroke, we'll also break down the BE FAST acronym to give you the tools to identify and respond to someone having a stroke. There's a lot to know about the brain when it comes to strokes, and we've got just the guest to walk us through it. We hope you'll join us!

S03_E13 - Focus on Psychosis - A Conversation with a Clinical Psychologist

Schizophrenia, Delusional Disorder, Hallucinations, Bipolar Disorder... These are some of the many conditions that fall under the category of Psycosis. But did you know that 1 in every 30 people in the U.S. will experience a psychotic event at some point in their life? But who is most at risk? What are some of the early signs? How is psychosis diagnosed and what treatments do we have?

It's safe to say psychosis has been given an imperfect definition in the media and in entertainment over the years. Psychotic episodes typically occur when someone has difficulty telling the difference between what's real and what's not. These conditions can take many forms and they are treated in a variety of ways, but thankfully it's been a long time since the era of asylums. But what's the current state of affairs around these conditions? Joining us on Episode 13 is Dr. Marielle Demarais, PhD, LP, who will help us better define psychosis and walk us through the current diagnoses, treatments and supports available to patients and their loved ones. We'll also field a few listener questions on the subject as well!

Although psychosis might be more common than you think, it might not be exactly what you've been lead to believe. We hope you'll join us to find out more!

S03_E12 - Strengthening Our Understanding of the Pelvic Floor

The Pelvic Floor. Everyone with a pelvis, has a pelvic floor. But what is it? For starters, it's something many of us take for granted - until issues arise... And although pelvic floor issues commonly effect women, they effect plenty of men as well. From feeling like you need to sprint to the bathroom every five minutes, to anxiety around the body's ability to "hold it", to experiencing discomfort during intimate moments, these conditions can really throw a wrench in your day. But fear not, because understanding what's going on down there is the first step towards regaining control.

The pelvic floor is responsible for a lot of important behind the scenes functions in our body, and when conditions such as incontinence, prolapse or pelvic pain arise, it's important to know what can be done to get things back on track. On this episode we'll be joined by Dr. Beth Stegora, an expert in pelvic floor conditions and therapies for treating them. S03_E10 - Getting a Better Understanding of ALS

ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a rare but serious condition that affects around 5 people in every 100,000, but due to its devastating effects on both the patient and the caregivers, it's something that certainly merits a deeper conversation. Lou Gehrig and Steven Hawking may be the two most well-known cases, but it seems once ALS is mentioned, many people are in one way or another connected to it. But what's actually happening in the body? What do we think causes it? What is the progression of the illness like and what are the current treatments available?

There's still a lot out there that we don't know about the disease, but the medical community is making strides every day to help support those living with the condition to lead fulfilling lives. On Episode 10 of the podcast, we'll have an in-depth conversation with Dr. Sam Maiser, MD, Chair of Neurology at Hennepin Healthcare and an expert on ALS, to help us get a better understanding of the disease. S03_E08 - Getting our Brains Around TBI and Concussions

Brains! We've all got 'em. (Well, perhaps some of us more than others...) But it's estimated that almost 50% (!) of all adults in the U.S. have experienced a concussive event or some sort of traumatic brain injury in their lifetime. That's a staggering statistic, and on Episode 8 of the show, we'll be joined by Dr. Matthew Puderbaugh to help us define what a traumatic brain injury is, how to identify one, and what to do when we see one.

Dr. Puderbaugh is an Air Force veteran and assists on the sidelines of the NFL, so it's safe to say he's seen a number of these over the years. He'll help us wrap our brains around what's happening when concussive events occur, how they're treated, and the effect they can have on our emotional states. S02_E13 - Overcoming the Loneliness Epidemic, Together

Solitude is a choice and something that all of us need in our lives at some point or another. Loneliness, on the other hand, is something entirely different and it's become one of the largest present-day issues facing our society. In a recent in-depth report by the Surgeon General of the United States, Dr. Vivek Murthy, he refers to the loneliness issue in the U.S. as an epidemic and something that is affecting 1 in every 2 people at any given moment.

The effects of loneliness have been compared to those of smoking and even obesity, and include severe afflictions, such as heart attack, stroke, dementia, anxiety, depression - the list goes on. But what's causing this? What can we do to help ourselves and our society? Join us for a conversation with the Chair of Psychiatry at Hennepin Healthcare, Dr. Eduardo Colón, as we take a closer look at the Surgeon General's report and discuss the causes and effects of the Loneliness Epidemic. It's something that affects both individuals, as well as our society, so it's safe to say we're all in this together, and that there's something in the episode for everyone.

S02_E12 - Getting Control of Asthma

Asthma is something that an estimated 26 million Americans live with every day and approximately 10% of our kids. Living with asthma can be a challenge, especially if it's uncontrolled, and in 2019 the CDC estimated that around 10 people in the US die from asthma daily. But still, people with controlled asthma run marathons, scuba dive, and play 90+ minutes of soccer (David Beckham) regularly. So how does one get it under control? What is it, exactly? Do you ever grow out of it? And how are our treatments progressing?

Join us on episode 12 for a conversation with Hennepin Healthcare Allergist and Immunology expert Dr. Josh Dorn, who cares for many patients living with asthma. We'll go over the origins and contributors to this condition, what it's like to live with asthma (including Dr. Dorn's interpretation of wheezing...), and discuss the current and emerging treatments and therapies used to help people get their asthma under control.

Currently it's estimated that between 42-45% of Americans are living with overweight or obesity, and that number is expected to rise to around 50% by the year 2030! That'd be half of the U.S. population, and that makes this a very important conversation to be having now.

There are a lot of risks and health hazards associated with overweight and obesity - heart attacks, chronic kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes... the list is long and scary. But is all of this inevitable? What factors play the biggest roles? And what can be done to maintain a healthy weight?

On Episode 11, we'll have an in-depth conversation with Dr. Iesha Galloway-Gilliam, Medical Director of the Comprehensive Weight Management Center at Hennepin Healthcare. We'll discuss the common contributors to this condition, the role of Body Mass Index (BMI) and other calculations and available treatments and important strategies for weight management on this episode of the podcast.
