The Recreational Canal Safety Plan was developed to provide crucial information on water safety and drowning prevention. Although March is national engineering month, we can’t wait that long to talk about how the City of Welland supports educational outreach for this field of study.
Our staff know that engaging with students to foster an interest in engineering happens through education and bridge building. Literal bridge building. And then having some fun busting those bridges to understand the real-world, team-oriented, creative problem-solving responsibilities professional engineers handle.
Jade Anema, senior project manager in the City’s engineering department, answers all our questions about what an engineer is (hint, there’s a whole lot of creativity blended with knowing standards, rules, and regulations), and tells us about the learning journey, the rewards, and how much the application of engineering practices and processes filters into our daily lives.
Oh, and the best part, she’s active in the concerted efforts to support and see more young women pursue engineering as a profession. By increasing the representation of women in this field, and providing elementary and high school students the first-hand experience of female leadership, the future of engineering looks dynamic and diverse.

Do you remember the carefree days of your youth spent playing outside? Time spent playing street hockey, basketball, home run derby, or whatever games you could imagine with a bat, a ball, or a frisbee? Some of us kept on playing through school teams and organized sports. We were active and these activities instilled important values such as teamwork, camaraderie, and confidence.

Our city desperately needs additional family physicians to care for our existing population and cater to our rapidly expanding community. We currently face a shortage of 17 doctors; a situation which calls for immediate action. Having read the prescription pad, Welland’s remedy is launching a physician recruitment campaign worth $1 million.
We firmly believe investing in healthcare is paramount, and attracting new doctors to provide care within our community is vital. To make this happen, we are offering attractive incentives. It means striving towards greater awareness so all community members feel safe, supported, and represented.

Yesterday, a Facebook post from our Fire and Emergency Services team lit social media on fire. The post outlined that, in accordance with the City of Welland Fee Schedule, Welland Fire and Emergency Services is now invoicing at-fault drivers (as determined by police) for fire department response to all motor vehicle collisions in the City of Welland.
Needless to say, there was a lot of speculation, misinformation, and confusion. This episode's conversation with Fire Chief Adam Eckhart clears up some of the uncertainty floating around the social media atmosphere.
