Here is a cool video i took a couple years ago at a local outdoor music series in Cleveland, sponsored by the Cleveland Museum of Art, where they bring in interesting bands from other countries throughout the world.
This is a band, the Meridian Brothers, that i had never heard of, but they put on a fun and exciting performance, nonetheless!
They put a modern psychedelic twist on some classic South American grooves with some high energy and an amped up crowd, and i would say that they were a smashing success!
I've been to some other of these events but didn't catch any the last year or two, so i just wanted to share something from my archives when i just stumbled on it!

Here is a video from a show I played last weekend in Akron, Ohio at the CAVE. This is a newer Cleveland band of some old pals doing a new collaboration duo, Near None, "The premiere noise industrial band of the Cleveland Westside suburbs" being their tagline.
They put on a fun show with high energy and intense rhythms and textures. Or perhaps this kind of music is too scary? I could see this band going on to be huge, perhaps going on tour opening up for Last Gaga or Taylor Swift.
We'll have to see what the future has in store for them... I heard they have a cassette coming out soon!

Here is a short snippet from back in April when I had the pleasure of doing the couple hour drive from Cleveland to see the legendary Egyptian Lover!
For the uninitiated, thr Egyptian Lover is an early West Coast rapper, producer and DJ, whose career spans over 40 years!
He absolutely DOMINATED the evening and rocked the crowd in the way that only a classic old school hip hop artist could!
Did I mention that he played strictly vinyl records and an old drum machine, the Roland SP 808?? Some styles never go out of date, and that boat certainly rings through for this guy!

I have recently been getting into gongs, out with the new and in with the old, I say.
This is a recording of my first time playing my new 22 inch dark wind gong.
As i throw away all these electronic gizmos, i will start to get gongs of increasing size, i will eventually create a gong the size of CERN to prove that they have been doing it wrong all along.
this one is dedicated to my late grandmother, hence the title, "Gong for Granny"

DJ Scratch, from the legendary late 80s group, EPMD, was one of the out of town headliners at Fresh Fest, an annual Cleveland festival which was a street fair this year, with many vendors and musical performances.
I only got a few minutes,.as I was saving my memory for KRS ONE, who was performing after.

I just came back from the 4th Fresh Fest In Cleveland, an all day outdoor street festival, with vendors and food trucks and music performers throughout the day.
The headliner was legendary hip hop artist, KRS ONE, who has been performing since the mid eighties. He plays a selection of his hits and does some freestyling and motivational speaking.

Here's another video testing out some more newer gear acquisitions, this time bringing out the tiny baby Arturia Microfreak digital/analog hybrid Synthesizer and pairing it with the beautiful Strymon Volante Digital digital "tape" delay.
The Volante is a pretty cool piece, with the ability to choose 4 different "tape" heads for playback and recording - an attempt at recreating the sounds of the much sought after vintage tape echo effects.
The reverb on this pedal is very nice, but the sound on sounds nice is pretty much stellar ... this thing can get pretty wild if you let the sounds build up!

The West Pest is an all-inclusive desktop little baby attempt at the "West Coast" style synthesizer. The West coast sound, as opposed to the "East coast" sounds of Moog, is known for Don Buchla and his Buchla modular systems and their use of wavefolders instead of filters and low pass gates, among other modules that are ... perhaps a little more esoteric than the typical subtractive synthesis methods.
Here is a video of a first little run through or test with the piece. It has a little patchbay for rerouting the internal layout. This was my first West Coast-style synth, although I've had some modules in my frac system that do LPG's and wave folding, but I must admit the buchla can be intimidating with all of its "abnormal" features.
Big knob that's not a filter knob? It's a FOLD knob!
This thing has a sequencer and arpeggiator built in, I'm still trying to get into the nuances of everything. It's just more blams and blips, pretty much, but this thing definitely has some personality. I'm sure there's a way to get it to do something a little more musical and not just sound FX stuff...At any rate, it's a great entry level price for some West coast synthesis action!

I still have a couple clips i haven't posted of performers from the recent Voice of the Valley music fest benefit gig held at Club Pizazz out in Oberlin, Ohio-a half hour or so outside of Cleveland.
Bbob and J Guy are two long-standing performers of the Cleveland scene, with Bbobs tenure going back a couple more decades, even.
Alwaysa pleasure to see, this is but a short clip of their performance. It's interesting to see them perform outside and also "in the round."

Hi there!
I recently just bought this Behringer MS 20 "tribute" Synthesizer for the lady so she could have a semi modular synth to mess around with... it was only $200 new from sweetwater... and i couldn't pass up that opportunity!
For the uninitiated, the Korg MS 20 is a two oscillator monophonic semi-modular Synthesizer from the late 70s. it was much more affordable then say, a Moog, and is kinda known for it's scream-y self resonating filter and it's external input, allowing you to run other gear through the filter and trigger sounds.
This was basically the first time messing with it, i also picked up a used Arturia Keystep, which i thought would be perfect for playing and sequencing the K 2.
Here I am from the other night just messing with the arpeggiator and sequencer a little, demonstrating some of its sounds!
It's a classic, crusty sound for sure and while we could debate all night on the ethics of this piece, it is surely a steal at $200! my friend had a MS 10 back in the day that was i think around $700 dollars used and only had one oscillator, aside from whatever other features this one has!

Our hero returns for a great gig out on a farm in Oberlin, Ohio, this time playing a battery powered set up in a treehouse out in the woods. You can hear the frogs en mass, and it was even lightning bug season, a perfect night for a campfire.
Instruments used include the arturia microfreak synthesizer and a circuit bent Roland R8 drum machine from the 80s.
Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman is a musician from Cleveland who has been performing in the area for two decades, with many releases on a handful or two of labels that you've probably never heard of. Some of his other hobbies include collecting records and bicycling.

Decades long Cleveland Sound explorer, musician, improviser and builder Bbob Drake had a featured sounds installation as part of this year's Resound music festival, a modern music festival.
Bbob had been working with church organs and had a rather large installation that he could control via MIDI and some software he wrote with Pure Data, along with some home built Synthesizer modules, and some physical manipulation via the air flow too the pipes.
It was great to hear the frequencies battle each other ss you moved around the space, with the sound being affected by the acoustics in the room, as well as the sounds come out of the individual pipes, most noticeable in the very small, higher pitched pipes.
The artist gives a little spiel in the middle of the video about the work... check it out! It was a great time all around!

Yesterday I drove from Cleveland out to Oberlin, about a half hour outside of Cleveland to go to a book signing for Richard Koloda, a pal that just had his first book published, a book on the life and times of free jazz saxophone pioneer, Albert Ayler.

Albert Ayler was from our home town of Cleveland, Ohio and had a pretty controversial career and life, which ended in 1970 with his body tied to a jukebox and sinking to the bottom of the East River in New York City.
Certainly someone who was ahead of his time, Ayler proved to have an influence on many musicians in Jazz and Rock alike. While he may not have achieved the success and recognition of people like John Coltrane, he left a lasting impression in his own right.
The author told some great anecdotes and talked about the process of writing a book for two decades(!)
Afterwards, Noah Sherman and Abel Cecchi, some music students from Oberlin College performed a few pieces on trombone, percussion and piano. Here I captured a Coltrane piece, an original and a Duke Ellington number, which probably gets cut short.
Perhaps I'll do a book review... But I've never done a book review before, so we'll see if I can even attempt such a thing.

The Cleveland Thyagaraja Festival is an annual Indian v festival held on the campus of Cleveland State University. It started in 1978 and is the largest Indian festival outside of India!
The festival runs for twelve days and attracts thousands of visitors for a variety of performers in both music and dance, including competitions and awards.
It had been some years since I had attended this festival and I happened to be right near it so I had to pop in and get a little video of some great dancing before my memory ran out 😢!

I was over my homie Fawko's house a couple weeks back for a little scratch and beer session when he showed me his newest toy, a Korg Electribe Rhythm Synthesizer.
This particular Electribe model came out in 1999 and is an analog modeling Synthesizer with the ability to do drum and synth sounds. I had messed with one of these similar models in the past, I remember finding it rather difficult to operate (out might have been a different model).
My friend was finding difficulty in saving the patterns, something I was actually unable to figure out. I guess that's what they make manuals! 😂. Hopefully he has since had the strength to consult a manual in the time that it's been since ai came by...
I found it pretty easy and intuitive to operate, all things considered and I quickly had some beats and synth sounds going before I decided to whip out my phone and get a couple example videos.
These Electribe series retain a lot of love, for their ease of use. While I don't think I'll have the need for one anytime soon, it does have a variety of drum amd synth sounds that could be very useful for a variety of purposes\musical styles.

This is a newer project of Columbus noise and performance art legend, Bobb Hatt, who is always interesting to see live. Sometimes he's painted up in gold or wearing sexxxy fishnet lace...or sometimes nothing at all!
I have no idea who the other person in the band is, bit they are clearly in charge of the vocals and beats.
This was a rather loud gig...and Bobb left most of his speakers at home... usually there is a whole wall of them! 😂

"Sublime" is the dry ice project of Cleveland percussionist, J Guy Laughlin. He plays the haunting sounds of metal on the ice, which creates some rather unsettling sounds.
A wide variety of objects are used, each having a unique reaction to the dry ice and there are some other playful surprises in the performance.
This was recorded last night, the inauguration show for a new spot in the Waterloo arts building, in Cleveland's Collinwood neighborhood.

A couple of weeks ago, I went to a great breakdancing battle at a local Cleveland bar hosted by this great group that actively holds events every few months throughout the year, 10k Movement, named after the amount of hours that it takes to put in before you can truly master it.
This is the second part of the night, but I had to leave before the final battle because ai do a weekly radio show that I couldn't be late for! sorry!
It was a great evening of wonderful talents, and it's so great to see the action up close!!

As I mentioned in my last post and video, this past weekend I was asked to DJ a rather oddball event at a local hot dog bar and restaurant, the happy dog, in Cleveland.
This venue is mostly a family friendly and rock n roll in the evenings kind of club, with these oddball experimental and performance art type shows being pretty rare at this place. Of course, I balanced out the evening by playing my special blend of party jam records to not scare everyone away too much, I guess.
This video features the Extreme cheerleader duo, The Girlfriend Experience, from Chicago and St. Louis, but these two ladies have other solo projects as Janet X-Mas and Chelsea Bridge.
This video is pretty intense, filled with much humor and ADULT TOPICS. Your parents would definitely not approve...watch at your own risk!! There is no nudity, so you'll have to look somewhere else if that's what you are looking for though!
This one has some surprises in store for sure! Definitely one of my top ten all time harsh noise cheerleader groups!!! 🎵

This past weekend I jad a gig DJing at a local hot dog restaurant and bar, the happy dog, for an evening of music.
Here is a video of two local drummers, J Guy and Jayson doing their drum duo project, Skunk Wook Ensemble. J Guy is the bad boy noise and free jazz drummer and Jayson being the indie rock darling drummer for Cloud Nothings, as seen on the Jimmy Fallon show.
This place isn't the first venue that I think of when it comes to catching avant garde acts, typically being more of a rock n roll club, but when I get asked to DJ for my favorite extreme cheerleader group, THE GIRLFRIEND EXPERIENCE, of course I'm gonna be on board! Welcome back to another edition of Quinnertronics' Synthesizer Corner with our old friend, Quinnertronics, bringing the jive to Hive!
I just picked up a ~~clone~~ tribute to the classic ARP 2600 synthesizer, renown for its wide variety of timbres and it was quite popularly used in sci-fi movie sound FX, most famous of all as the "voice" of R2D2 in the Star Wars movies.
I've had my eye on this one since it was released a year or two back, and have been patiently waiting for the price to come down. Used versions of the original ARP 2600 can easily cost in the thousands. Behringer came out with their rendition, in three different colors/configurations. Here I have the "Gray Meanie" which has spring reverb built in, which the Blue Marvin version also has ( the black version has a digital reverb).
Looking her over firsthand, she does seem a bit complex and intimidating...and I have plenty of experience as a synth hobbiest. Is it the sliders? Or how she comes pre-wired with inputs to the patch points listed? I've never really had too much experience with semi modular stuff, although I do have the Behringer Neutron, which I thought packed quite a punch.
I'll start with the sound- which I thought the best way to describe it was that it just has a lot of character to it. The fine tuning controls are a great touch, and I've never seen one on a filter before. There is no shortage of modulation sources and I am going to have to spend some time digging into this one, because I can already tell that she is deeper than your average monosynth.
Secondly, the visual package is something that jumps out, the gray version has adjustable red LED lights on each fader, which look pretty nice in the dark. The blue version had yellow lights on it, and I'm sure I will forever contemplate whether I made the right decision or not...a decision I made based on thinking that the blue, while it does definitely pop with that bright color, perhaps it would be a little too much on the eyes, going for something a little more aesthetically subdued. Only time will tell.
They shrank the package down a bit, so it could fit in a modern 19-inch rack, but keeping the same general layout and style. Here is a photo of one of the original units:

Just messing around with a little patch the other day on my eurorack system, this time playing with an interesting mix of a couple of clouds modules mangling up an oscillator and some chords, with a little bit of some 8 bit drum sounds buried in the mix there. Modules are always moving around in the case, the Qu bit chords module was a recent acquisition, but I was making room for some other modules.

Stephen Petrus' murderous vision project is close to 30 years old, here he is performing a live concert in Cleveland from this past week on Thursday night.
Stephen hails from outside of Cleveland, from a town called Fairport Harbor, a city in Northeastern Ohio that lies on Lake Erie. He organized the two outdoor Fairport Harbor Experimental Music Festivals there.
I just found out that he is now signed to some German label to release three records, so be on the look out for that!
I played in this band one time and we recorded an album together maybe five years ago or so, but it has never been released, unfortunately...one of these days!

Columbus, Ohio based art rock\punk DANA played at last weekends Masquerade Ball hosted by WCSB 89.3FM in Cleveland at the Beachland Ballroom, here is a video of theor performance.
This band has been active since 2015, according to discogs. and their entry is DANA (57) ( ! ) I've never seen an entry nimber go so high...
I played in this band for one song one time at a bowling alley gig some years ago-they wanted me to do scratches, as I was DJing that night.

Doug and Pat have been at it since 2007 or so and have done many releases, mostly cassettes, but the odd LP or CD here or there. WCSB is a college radio station that has been on the air for almost fifty years and this is a mostly-annual party and a fun celebration.

Arturia is a French company, first bursting on to the scene gaining recognition for their software emulation of vintage synthesizers, and eventually creating the Minibrute, their first foray into analog synth hardware- ultimately a smashing success, hitting the budget price point with a big sound and features set.
The Minibrute would eventually have little and big brothers, the Microbrute and Matrixbrute, respectively, (and a couple others) but today we are talking about their cousin, the Microfreak.
The Microfreak is an analog\digital hybrid Synthesizer built on the Mutable Instruments Plaits module, an open source macro oscillator that features many different starting points for sound generation, including analog modeling oscillators, wavetables and even synthesized speech. The SEM-style analog filter and assignable modulation matrix compliment the filter and help offer a palette of tones that is distinct from a purely digital synth, but giving it the warmth of an analog filter. The Microfreak also has a unique filter compared to their other hardware synths, which helps it stick out.
Arturia has offered several firmware updates over the last few years, most notably the addition of a VOCODER! They released a special white edition, complete with tiny gooseneck microphone that plugs into the headphones jack...talk about giving your customers free updates!
While I have the original version with the blue, I did score one with the mic that clips very snuggly on the back and is very sleek and unintrusive.
I really haven't had too much time to play around with this thing, some of the video here was even recorded on my recent trip to Missouri and Arkansas...which kind of displays how portable this thing is. Did I mention that it can run on USB power and I was just using a battery Bank to power it?!
The touch keyboard is another unique option, offering a different way to play than a traditional keyboard. It still has some other desirable keyboard features, such as aftertouch, hundreds of presets, and a sequencer.
It really shines with the modulation matrix, offering many opportunities to shape your own sounds and giving you new sounds to help you fill up all those patches!
I have enjoyed this piece so far, and especially appreciate it's portability-it is very light with a small form factor.

Played another gig this past weekend in Cleveland, this time with Slack, A heavy free jazz electronic trio from Philadelphia.
I don't know much about these guys, but they have some other projects, such as Lance the drummer does Unguent, who i recently saw perform a modular synth\laptop set, at those same venue.
I also just meet Zane Kanevsky, the electronics guy that night and he had some solo releases as well under his name, one of which was a 7 inch record titled "Christian Hair."
lastly, the guitarist, Zachary Darrup, whom I had never heard of before, but he has released albums with various bands and some duo and trio work with Jack Wright and Ben Bennett, among others.

Last weekend we had a little party on the beach with special guests, Moth Cock, from Kent, Ohio. It all went down at Edgewater Park in Cleveland.
They performed a beat-less set after ditching the sampler, prefering to go for an impromptu old school electro-acoustic horn drone set!
Moth Cock is truly a legendary Ohio band and they have a new 3 tape box set on Hausu Mountain that I'm sure it's just mind melting!
they might be an acquired taste, but maybe today is the day that you expand your pallet a little!

Had the pleasure of seeing the classic 90s hip hop artists, Wu Tang Clan and Nas, on their 2022 New York State Of Mind Tour.
They appeared September seventh at the Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. It is owned by the Cleveland Orchestra,but Livenation 🤢 books a bunch of events there, too.
The Blossom Music Center is an outdoor venue that can seat many thousands, with a pavillion area and an abundance of general lawn seating-a fun venue with excellent tailgating opportunities-arguable the best part of the evening 😂.
First the RZA came out for a drawn out roll call, with introductions of each Wu Tang Clansman coming out to perform their most famous cuts for the audience-a little get to know you.
Oh, look here comes the GZA! Liquid Swords-everyone should know this one. RZA tells the audience that the GZA taught them hip hop...
Aw, the audience is call and responding to a song about cocaine!
DJ Scratch From EPMD came out and warmed up the crowd before they all started.
Unfortunately, Method Man wasn't performing because he was filming some movie that is surely up for Oscar consideration next year-but I'm sure it just gives Capadonna now time to shine.
There was even the son of the deceased Old Dirty Bastard in the house, performing his father's verses... Getting a decent amount of airtime much to U god's dismay, no doubt (read his book, it's great!).
I think it was another dirty child on the drum kit, but maybe it was someone else's!
They split up the night with Nas, who came out performing all his hits and putting on a great show.
There was minimal, but present videos displayed over the artists, giving the audience somewhat of a new York's street vibe.
We had pretty good seats that's we were lucky enough to smash for $20 on a special much earlier in the year!... You can't beat that.
They actually briefly added Busta Rhymes to the gig, who then dropped off... Perhaps not enough ticket sales?
I guess they had never been to this venue and I think they liked it...I myself hadn't been there in over 20 years!
They said we were a great audience! They really liked us!

And last-and most certainly least, from our backyard hootenanny at the new Club Pizazz out in Oberlin, Ohio, we have a set from Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman And her Astro-Infinity-Tesla Arkestra, one of Cleveland's most well-respected and clean cut electronic artists.
Tonight's broadcast was an Octatrack (sampler\sequencer)-based set, with some loops from the Korg Wavestate ran into a Boss RC-30 loopstation, with some photocell oscillator laser action at the end for good measure. First live set in over two years, it i recall correctly...and if you dont count web streaming as a real gig-which, of course no one does.
Pope Visor provides the VHS and video feedback action. we have teamed up on some analog videos before, some of which I have even posted here in Alien Art Hive... I'm still overdue to give him the Hive intro class, but he is interested.

I am back once more with a clip from the gig I played a couple weeks ago, this time featuring another Indianapolis, Indiana musician, Dave Clark. This was the first gig at a new venue\farmhouse in the college town of Oberlin, Ohio-about a half hour from Cleveland.
A Cleveland video artist, Pope Visor was menning the VHS decks for this one, using his bag of assorted tricks, producing a very funky and psychedelic experience.
Dave told me that he recently sold most of his gear(?) and that this set was "cheating," being performed on a laptop. You can be the judge on if it's cheating or not-or just soak in some chill vibes !

I had the pleasure of playing the inaugural gig at Club Pizazz in Oberlin, a new DIY farmhouse spot about a half hour outside of Cleveland, Ohio.
They threw a synth and campfire show, complete with amazing projections from Cleveland artist, Pope Visor, AKA Cool World Productions, who had the double screens playing manipulated VHS tapes and live video feedback. His work is pretty much just crazy good!
Here is the set from headline artist, Mark Tester, from Indianapolis, Indiana. He brings a dazzling assortment of electronic sounds, with some pretty chill vibes, with many a synthesizer and other machines in tote. (Discogs list his releases as ambient, collage, broken beat, minimal, new age noise....or something) unfortunately, it does cut out early, but we do get a good fourteen minutes or so, which is still worthwhile!

Tonight I dusted out the trusty old photocell oscillator (this one turns twenty next year) and decided that it was time to test it out with my newish laser projector, knowing full well that it would sound great!
I ran it through the Octatrack, with a channel running a comb filter and a little reverb, so it really gets some interesting resonance stuff going on. When the camera gets close to the unit, you can actually hear the raw tone coming from it's insides.
The sound of this single oscillator is pretty bland, limited to a knob for pitch adjustments, but there is a nifty trick inherent to the photocell, and how different wavelengths produce different timbres, so you basically have a built-in audio waveshaper under the hood! I learned of this early on when experimenting with a black light and noticed that it produced a much more intense and full sounding tone. Sunlight also produces a very pure and brilliant-sounding waveform.
Back when I was in college, I was taking a video technology course taught by the engineer of the Com department and we were learning about different light wavelengths and at the top was cosmic rays light, so I asked how I could get them for my theremin and I think he said that I'd have to get above the clouds so....I still don't know what THOSE sounds like! Sorry, I just had to include that anecdote.
These are actually a pretty simple build (or a cheap eBay purchase) for the adventurous!

We got to hang with Amish for the first time in a bit, having just recently moved back to Cleveland and i think this may be his first appearance in a SONNSONLY video. He definitely has the nice cuts and I hope to be seeing him come out more often!

I helped a friend move this week and he insisted that I take this (partially broken) Synthesizer as payment!
The Korg Poly 800 is an early analog\digital hybrid synth and the first sub- $1000 Synthesizer from the 80s, the mk I first appearing in 1983 and the mkII coming out in 1985.
This device suffers from a lack of controls on the front panel, although you can edit all the parameters from scrolling through the different category numbers listed on the front panel. Everyone agrees that these types of "menu diving" get in the way of the user experience!
It has kind of a thinner sound, likely to the fact that the oscillators all share the same filter, technically making this a paraphonic Synthesizer. I'd say it sounds somewhere between a Roland Juno and a Casio! It does allow for stacking of the oscillators and you are able to switch to monophonic mode, adding some versatility to the machine.
I wasn't necessarily that blown away by the sounds, but perhaps I just need to spend some time getting down and dirty editing some patches. People kinda disagree about this Synthesizer, some loving it, and others loathing it.
The MkII version adds battery backup for saving patches and some effects, and they both can be easily modded to add features such as dedicated filter control knobs or making an input to the filter amd effects.
It has a cool onboard sequencer that will take hundreds of notes of entry, or can be scaled down to just a few notes, to do arpeggiator sounds (bit I dont see a dedicated arp)
lastly, you can backup the digital data to cassette, which seems like a really bizarre data method, but I guess it just makes data noises, then you play it back into the machines to transfer it back (remember the volatile memory from the mk I).
Unfortunately, my mod wheel\pitch band is broken, bring totally detached from the unit but hopefully this is an easy fix. I may try to do that myself and attempt the mods as well. These things go for 3 to 400 dollars in the secondhand market, so that is another option, to just flip it...but its kinda hard for me to give up a vintage synth that I paid nothing for!

I am back with the thrilling, chilling conclusion to the second Lords of the Land Street Dance festival; held in Cleveland, Ohio at Severance Hall, home of the Cleveland Orchestra.
There were several battles that were ongoing over the two days of the festival and here we get to see the finalists!
There were certainly some close calls in my opinion.... but not everyone gets that five hundred dollar prize!
What do you think about the judges decisions? Did they make the right calls? I'm no dance expert by any means, but all these dancers were pretty fly in my opinion!

I am back with the second chunk of videos from the day two of the Lords of the Land Street Dance festival which took place last weekend at Severance Hall, the home off the Cleveland Orchestra.
It was a great event, this only being the second and last day of it. It is very nice to see the Clevelanders coming out and support some good old fashioned hip hop!
You get to see a performance from Cleveland legend, Suave Gotti, and some freestyle dance cypher action-as well as some showcases by the judges and other local young dancers...an event jam packed with fun for the whole family. I still have one more video of the final battles coming... this was kind of the interlude video...or something.

The Korg Opsix is an "altered FM" Synthesizer, meaning it's a grandchild of the Yamaha DX7, one of the synthesizers that defined the 1980s.
One of the major problems with the DX7 was the fact that it's really annoying and difficult to program, not having any knobs just a lot of parameters to scroll through in a crummy screen. There are many patches for DX7 and it's cousins available online and it's probably most famously known for its bell and electric piano sounds...oh and you can't forget the "lately" bass, of course!
Traditional digital FM synthesis is very different than programming analog (Subtractive) synthesis, and can make for a frustrating time is you don't understand how to operate the machine.
With the Opsix, like the DX7, you have 6 operators to use as the basis of your sounds, which can be this in different authorities and modulated with different envelopes and whatnot. Where the Opsix improves upon is giving you some built in effects and a digital filter, a feature not found in most FM synthesizers because, you basically didn't need it, I guess.
A sequencer and arpeggiator are nice additions to the piece, as are some wavefolding and ring modulation options. Having knobs on the front to manipulate is probably the most requested feature of the synth, as FM is pretty notorious.
One feature that I am into is the random patch creator function, which can have very interesting results with these elaborate digital Synthesizers, a feature I am familiar with from using the Korg Wavestate, another gnarly digital synth that came outa year or so before this one. It's a great feature to track up patches, as there is room for 500, I believe.
One of the drawbacks for me with these Korg synths are that those lights are pretty crazy bright, at least this one is not all bright white like the Wavestate, which I found blinding and couldn't figure out how to shut it off . The keys themselves are a little on the light and cheap feeling side, a problem I can't deal with since I got this one brand new for some crazy sale they just had this week, coming in at $330, originally a $750 synth. I didn't really need this but I couldn't pass up that price and my SY 77 needs a new battery so I needed some FM in my life... now I just gotta sell my Volca FM!
Overall, it seems like a great deal for a prefer of gear that packa a familiar punch, with some modern "allegations!"

this weekend I had the pleasure of making it to the second day of The Lords of the Land hip hop street dance festival's second installment at Severance Hall In Cleveland.
Severance Hall is a pretty fancy building and is where the world reknown Cleveland Orchestra plays-a rather unusual spot for a hip hop event!

I am taking my new Behringer TR 606 "tribute" drum machine for another test drive- this time accompanied by her sister, the TD-3 Bass synth ( Poor man's TB 303 ).
Both these synthesizers feature modifications not found in the originals, such as a distortion feature, and individual outputs for the drum instrument channels. the sound are pretty spot on with re-creating the original vintage early 1980s sounds of theses instruments.

I just got a Behringer RD-6 Analog Drum Machine, an economical version of a classic budget Roland drum machine, the TR 606... aka the companion piece to the TB 303 bass Synthesizer- the one famous for creating acid house as a genre (post-ten ragas to a disco beat ;). This thing seems really great so far, and I was able to score one for only $125.
It has all the features of the original, plus common desirable mods such as individual outputs, MIDI and distortion controls.
I think this has some cool retro early 80s sounds and will be great to sync up to the modular stuff, as well as the TD-3, the Behringer TB 303 "tribute"... which I was also able to score for very cheapa while back - and they commonly go for under $100 these days.
I found the machine easy to program, able to write and save patterns without even looking at the manual, and zipping around the interface after only the second time using it.
While it's sounds may be rather limited, and frankly uneditable-basically other than the accent feature, it has that great lo-fi electro-punk, trashy bedroom-producer sound going for it...and that makes it stand out.
Now Behringer is a company notorious for it's "tributes," but I think they have this kind of "if Robin Hood was a capitalist" vibe going, which ultimately gets these classic sounds in the hands of musicians-ones that could only ever dream of using a VST plugin of those original sounds! Love the budget gear giant or hate them, but you have to appreciate the amazing time that it is to be alive and be able to get such cheap gear-a real Renaissance for music gear. Plus, one has to wonder what the next generation will be able to do with those old garage sale budget finds that they stumble upon!

The Big Noise Candy Mountain festival is an experimental music festival in West Virginia that has hard forked from the Voice Of the Valley festival, which has gone back since maybe 2007 or 2008, save a couple years off.
There is a new 2xCD \ digital benefit compilation that just dropped on the Rubber City Noise label and I have a chill synth sparkle track featuring my new girlfriend, the Sequential Pro 3.

This weekend i had the pleasure of seeing legendary electronic band, Kraftwerk....or at least one of the original members of the band (Ralf and 3 German guys as I joked).
While it was very much what I expected, a collection of the hits(the early Kraftwerk records we're not represented, as they are no longer considered canon after Disney bought rights to the Kraftwerk I.P.). The 3-D video was a rather nice addition to the Kraftwerk experience... but don't worry, they brought out the robots for the encore!
While you pretty much can't tell if anyone was doing much at their glow podium as far as gizmos were concerned, Ralf had a synth and was obviously playing the keyboard parts. You have to assume that much of the music is made from just backing tracks synced to the video, but it was certainly an experience and I would highly recommend anyone that has the opportunity to try and see these guys before they are retired for good...i can't imagine them touring many more times. but who knows, maybe they will be like the sun ra arkestra and be able to tour after their leader passes!
I mean, I was joking about the disney purchase...but I could see a Kraftwerk ride at disney world being a real possibility now that i think about it!

Here is one side of a found sound cassette that I compiled and released back 2008 on my label, everyone else has a record label so why can't i?
For those unfamiliar, found sound is basically just what it sounds like- in this case, taking the form of answering machine cassettes and children's home recordings and some other oddities that I acquired over the year at thrift stores. There is a karaoke track and some random static-y sounds, but it is mostly the spoken voice for this one.
This is an interesting tape, for those that like these kind of odball things!...I finally did a sequel about ten years after this first release... but that's a story for another time!

I just got this Sequential Pro 3 last week, if you didn't happen to see my first test drive video. Sequential is a U.S. Company started by Dave Smith way back in the 1970s, starting with the legendary Prophet 5 polyphonic synthesizer.
He is actually quite famous for his development in the synthesizer and electronic music world, He is known as the driving force behind the invention of MIDI technology, musical instrument digital interface, a universal way of letting gear "talk" to each other, letting one be able to control one instrument and it's parameters\notes\settings from another piece of gear.
I believe he actually "won" a Grammy for his contribution to this technology, something that undoubtedly helped shape the world of music these last 40 plus years.
They didn't even patent the technology, giving it away to developers in hopes that it would create a universal language that all the different manufacturers would use to increase the comparability of different types of musical instruments. It was the early 80s and electronic musical instruments was still in it's infancy. today, you can purchase a fully MIDI compatable electronic clarinet if you so desired!
unfortunately, the market for manufacturing musical instruments is a pretty competitive business and by the late 80s, Sequential Circuits would call it a day, the name eventually being bought by Yamaha. Dave Smith worked for some other manufacturers, designing software synthesizers and even digital hardware stnths, such as the Korg Wavestation. In in 2002, he started Dave Smith Instruments and began the manufacture of new, forward-thinking products, such as the Evolver.
Dave Smith Instruments was around doing their thing for a while when Yamaha gave him back the Sequential name in 2018, in an act of good faith.... that's pretty honorable if you ask me-i can't imagine an American company just giving someone the name that they bought the rights to!
To this day, they continue the tradition of making high quality, forward-thinking instruments of the future... now, check out this video for some more explorations with the Pro 3, their flagship mono\paraphonic synthesizer... perhaps a little history can let one enjoy the sounds a little more!

it started out last week when a friend was asking me on advice for a new controller to integrate into his euro rack. i was recommending there minibrute 2.0-nice keys, 2 oscillators, great sequencer and patchbay. he wasn't sold, liking the moog grandmother.
so, i looked at the minibrute, which became a grandmother and then finally "settling'on the Sequential pro 3, a paraphonic synthesizer-and my first of that type.
the filter sounds like a dream and they give you the to choose from-including an OBERHEIM and Moog ladder filter!
the sequencer is probably the next best feature-they gives you 16 tracks and you can use them to modulate the parameters of your choosing!
it has three oscillators, one of which is a digital wave table oscillator, so you can play weird chords and progressions that used the different oscillators for each voice and you can save presets to recall with ease

was in the mood for a red eye drone jam last night on the wavestate wave sequencing synthesizer-one of my most recent acquisitions to the studio.
Great sounds that are definitely unlike any piece of gear that I own!
this was a good chunk of an hr jam i was doing when I decided to pull out the phone. one handed style doesnt really cut it with this synth, so I ended up just throwing it down to get the audio.

I found my old Street Fighter II: Championship Edition Genesis game while cleaning the basement the other day, so I figured I would dust it off and fire up the old circuit bent Sega Genesis and take it for a test drive.
Circuit bending is the art of creating new connections from electronics, exposing hidden effects that were not desired-transforming the video or audio into something radically different.
This became popular in the early 2000s with old casio keyboards and the like, but can certainly be used with old video equipment to get all these great glitch effects! I've found that each game turns out a bit differently, although to the untrained eye, it may seem like just a mess of pixels and colors!
What do you think of the final product?...Certainly quite different than the original?

here is another test drive of my new Preen FM2 synthesizer, it basically can do 4 different DX7 patches-pretty nifty.
the octatrack is great for busting out quick stuff with different midi channels and layering drums(or whatever samples on top)-although it is a tough machine to learn, and i really consider myself only moderately trained on the machine-it's deep.
so i figured out how to layer a few of the different dx7 instruments, so i just pounded in a little beat and recorded a little messing around, checking out some of these kits that are on it-i need to find some new ones!
the octatrack is great for all the randomness modulations you can do to give variations to your beats.

here is a new piece of used gear that i just got for a good price. i have a Yamaha sy 77 which had excellent fm capabilities (but needs a new battery) and a korg volca fm(which has only 3 notes of polyphony) so i figured that i'd check out this little known thing and see if it feels with me.

I just found out about this event a couple days ago, and I'm glad i went! it was Grand Wizard Theodore's birthday and there were some workshops and battles at a local dance studio just outside downtown Cleveland.
Grand Wizard Theodore is actually the DJ that invented the scratch! it was an accident while trying to keep the part in his record and his hand moved, creating an interesting should that he practiced before deciding it at a party-the rest is history. scratch history!

Here is a gem if there ever was one-I released this to cassette back in 2008, but it was recorded in 1994, when we were in 7th grade. this was an instant cult-classic and anyone in their right mind declared it to be the best tape in their collection. i guess it blew up on reddit somehow a while back, so i thought I'd share it here!

This is a Track (and "video") i did off of a compilation put together in 2017 by stephen petrus(murderous vision/the live bait recording foundation label) consisting of a bunch of different artists interpretation of a field recording made from a "fried CNC" lathe machine at his work-because everyone knows that a true industrial head will go to work everyday in a factory, of course!
Murderous Vision is a great dark ambient\death industrial project dating back to the 90s from Stephen and various collaborators and he has played gigs throughout the USA and Europe. I have collaborated with him on numerous occasions, sharing many gigs and tours and even recording an album together about 5 years ago which is, sadly, yet to be released.
Here is a link to the complete release...you know, if you really love that CNC timbre and are adventurous enough to hear 45 versions of a two minute sample...there are artists from all over the world and a slew of artists from Ohio, the state of its founders origin(and the one I live in)...i think I'm probably the only one to sequence the sample from a drum machine, though.
I sampled the recording onto my zip disc(lol) sp808 20- year-old-plus sampler and then made a slow beat on the boss dr 202 drum machine, just coming up with something to counter balance that harsh in your face high frequency, with a slow and chill beat. The 'video' was just a bunch of photos, memes and random phone pics that were just laying around that was made with just some pic-to-video app or something.-most of which i made myself.
perhaps a hastily put together throwaway video for a hastily put together and half-assed track? perhaps. or perhaps not. definitely not my favorite track or "video" that i have done🎸🕺🌬️...but still one with a story worth sharing

Every two or three years since 2008 , a group of Cleveland musicians organize a lottery to create new bands from dozens of area music veterans- dubbed the Cleveland Lottery League.
I believe other cities have done similar projects, but don't know where the concept originated. While I had been to some of their events over the years, and even recorded the live mix for the first concert and CD, I had never actually participated in the lottery itself.
Eventually, in 2016, I decided that this was the year that I was going to participate In the lottery. This was probably the biggest concert and audience I had ever performed for, although I had performed in front of large crowds numerous times-this was the venue where Motorhead broke the world record for loudest concert afterall....and I normally play in weird noise bands and stuff so Getting that opportunity is quite rare.
This whole event was actually sponsored by Lagunitas Beer...so we got pretty much unlimited beer at the lottery drawing and concert. which was pretty cool-if your into that kinda thing. I did play a gig sponsored by grolsch beer once in Boston in around 2007 with my one band doing east coast dates with OPN's old band-again these are pretty rare I'm not exactly Jimmy Fallon material here.
So they do a raffle of the 150 people or whatever and up with bands of three to five members who have a month or two to come up with a 15 minute set or something-then they have an all day concert that has all the bands performing. it has been at different venues over all the years and this was perhaps the biggest one.
Not all the bands make it, Not all the members make it to the end. I'm sure they each have a story to tell, but mine was a great experience- maybe I just lucked out to not get stuck in a boring indie rock band, but most people doing this seem pretty open minded to step out of their comfort zone-so maybe thats what I need!
I have no word on if they are doing it this year, but I would probably do it again, as I was unable to participate in the 2019 concert, as I had a conflicting event in another state that day.
Check out the set...I would say we were like Experimental dub funk rock, or something. It turned out pretty decent i thought, although we never played or talked much after the gig. Some bands do go on to continue to perform, release albums etc... which is pretty cool!

This is a piece off of a CD compilation of cat music that I was on, released in 2018 on the Chicago be label, No Part Of It.
It is a collection of artists from around the world with a theme of "experimental cat music," organized by Arvo Zylo. The album turned out great, and i definitely recommend it...you know, when you're in the mood for an hour plus of weird cat music, I guess.
My track was actually originally made as a sound piece companion for an animal-themed art opening in Cleveland at the Doubting Thomas from a pal, Jim Matzorkis, who commissioned me too do a dog in piece and a cat piece. The sculptures they were supposed to be encased in never were fully realized, for various reasons, and i had someweirdly themed pieces that i didn't really have a use for.
Fast forward a few years and Chicago noise freak Arvo Zylo puts out a call for some cat -themed experimental music and, voila, the rest is history. the track was a little long for a comp, but i told him i could edit it if he wanted. i never heard back so it was good enough i suppose! i get the near-end of the CD, as should be expected for submitting a lengthy track for a compilation.
The track is a weird combination of arturia minibrute, modular synthesizer and cat samples from a sound fx cd that i was scratching and messing up. perhaps someday a dog Compilation will find a home with its sister track??

i was excited that former REYNOLS member, Alan Courtis, was on it-as i am a big fan. Also, I really dig IRONING's abstract turntablism Christian Marclay-type stuff, so i was excited to see Andrew Chadwicks name on the comp as well. most of the other artists i was unfamiliar with, but that's doesn't make them any less exciting!
i know the art was all public domain stuff and is credited on the CD liner notes.

Here I hooked up my handy dandy boss loopstation through the send and returns on my mixer... now i have the ability to do overdubs and loops. I was just kinda messing around, seeing be whatever came out
This pedal is great, I would really recommend that everyone have one, regardless of what instruments you play. I've even seen non-musician poets rock these with interesting results! You can really do whatever you want by adding different layers. There are some less than stellar built in effects and this one doesn't have the reverse feature of its predecessor, but that's the sacrifice for the 100bank memory and the two tracks. This thing works wonders for backing tracks.
I use the rc30 with the two separate channels, but there are many different types of looping pedals from many different brands with prices for anyones budget. I really recommend used gear, typically hunt for that cheap purge on eBay that no one else wants! But you be you and find out what works for you💫🤸🕵️

Here's another track off my release from 2019, "Journey To The Center Of The Octatrack." This is the last song on the album, and the only one to sound like this. It's name is a play on lyrics from a sonic youth song and a reference to that european digital hardcore band. This song tends to be my number one streamed song, probably for those reasons.
While it may sound nothing like either of those bands, the name came from its periodic spastic blast of beats, with various midi controlled synthesizers holding it all together- mostly sounds like the jv 1080 /1010 to me.

Here is something I recorded a couple of weeks ago with my new korg wavestate synthesizer and a Boss RC 30 Loopstation. I slowly build up some layers, they are a pretty cool combo-this was the second time I tried this combination! I will keep working on trying some new stuff, I haven't used the loopstation much lately-it's a real nice piece, as it has two independent looping channels. The photograph I took in a local park during the springtime- thats why the leaves were so pink.
