This sermon, based on Matthew 17:1-9, was preached at Grace of God Lutheran on February 15, 2026, the last Sunday before Lent will begin. We heard the traditional Gospel reading for this Sunday, the account of Jesus' Transfiguration, and considered how and why this event sends us into the Bible. Above all, what we see in the Transfiguration (and throughout the Bible) is God's promise that sinners are brought into his gracious presence.

Thanks for listening again to the Meaningless Podcast! In this episode, Pastor Tim and Ian discuss Ecclesiastes chapter 6.

God's gives some people wealth, power, and success beyond their wildest imaginations; yet He does not allow them to enjoy it. Even further, it is a stranger that enjoys it. Why? Is really such a man "better off as a stillborn child", i.e. better off never born? Is ignorance really bliss? If we come from darkness only to return to darkness and everything under the sun has already been done (a chasing after the wind) then what really is the man's reward for all his toil? "For who knows what is good for a person in life, during the few and meaningless days they pass through like a shadow? Who can tell them what will happen under the sun after they are gone?" (6:12). Join us as we seek these answers.

We can be foolish in our religious observance; we can be foolish in our political activity; we can be foolish in our economic pursuits. Ecclesiastes 5 points out some of the folly humans in which humans engage in those spheres of life. In the end, Solomon reminds us simply, "it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given them" (5:18). We can do so because God has, through his Son Jesus Christ, declares our justification on the basis of faith, rather than works.

Ecclesiastes chapter 4 reflects on human relationships. They can be both comforting and encouraging ("Pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up," 4:10) or destructive ("Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun: I saw the tears of the oppressed— and they have no comforter; power was on the side of their oppressors," 4:1).

The truth we have to reckon with: There's no getting away from human relationships. We can only approach them with wisdom. Join Pastor Tim and Ian for this discussion of Ecclesiastes 4 on the Meaningless Podcast.

Thanks for listening again to the Meaningless Podcast! In this episode, Pastor Tim and Ian discuss Ecclesiastes chapter 3.

This chapter of Ecclesiastes reminds us that there's a proper time and place for everything that happens. War has a proper time; so does peace. Laughing has a proper time; so do tears. How do we know when that is? Solomon learned those lessons from careful reflection on life, coupled with a readiness to hear from God in his Word.

Here on 'The Meaningless Podcast' Pastor Tim and Ian dive into selections from each chapter of Ecclesiastes from a Confessional Lutheran perspective.

Sometimes we find ourselves cast adrift in a storm of chaos and uncertainty in our everyday lives; sometimes we our make indulging our desires part of our own personality; and sometimes we use the sins of others to justify the guilt our own.

We frantically rush back and forth, day and night, rain or shine, to find meaning, purpose, identity - a raison d'etre if you will - but to what avail? Can we ever actually know?

Trapped in this postmodern fog of celebrity, political and social media grey noise, many of us have lost sight of our created meaning and purpose. Not knowing this we lash out: we become enraged, yet apathetic, but the result is always the same - anxiety, anger, loneliness, despair. Is this the only worth of our lives, what society dictates: power, fame, wealth, status, looks etc.? Or is there a deeper, more profound, God given meaning to our existence?

King Solomon had it all: wine, women, wealth, palaces and gardens, courtiers and musicians, sumptuous feasts and banquets. But when the time came where he has sensed, tasted, touched and tested the limits of his mind and body he came to the same conclusions that many us have after struggling through an almost seemingly impossible task: it's all utterly meaningless. But is this really the conclusion that Solomon came to?

While neither of us are experts by any means, we hope that our conversations can shed some illumination on some of these questions, so that we might take a peek into what our created purposes and callings might be. Every Thursday, we'll take a stick to the branches of the ever abundant pear tree that is the Holy Scriptures, and through the lens of the Lutheran doctrine of vocation, ask the question:

"What do people gain from all their labors at which they toil under the sun?"

While neither of us are experts by any means, we hope that our conversations can shed some illumination on some of these questions, so that we might take a peek into what our created purposes and callings might be. Every Thursday, we'll take a stick to the branches of the ever abundant pear tree that is the Holy Scriptures, and through the lens of the Lutheran doctrine of vocation, ask the question:

"What do people gain from all their labors at which they toil under the sun?"

In this sermon, Tim begins by using a common statement stated by others, "Don't judge a book by its cover," while acknowledging that discernment is still necessary. Using an example of a suspicious person claiming to be an FBI agent, Tim emphasizes the importance of using wisdom in determining trustworthiness. This idea is then applied to faith, questioning how much a person’s visible glory or reputation should influence their credibility, particularly in the Christian ministry.

The sermon then discusses the "super-apostles" in the early church who sought credibility through letters of commendation. These individuals used social proof to validate their authority, contrasting Paul’s approach, which relied on the transformation of believers as evidence of his ministry. Paul draws a comparison between Moses’ ministry—marked by the Law, which brought condemnation—and the ministry of the Gospel, which brings righteousness. While the Law had glory, it was temporary, whereas the Gospel’s glory endures.

Ultimately, the message highlights that the true measure of a minister is not outward credentials but the impact of the Gospel on people’s hearts. Paul reminds the Corinthians that their faith, transformed by the Spirit, is the real testimony of his ministry. The sermon concludes by urging believers to listen to Jesus, repent, and believe the Gospel, emphasizing that the glory of Christ’s salvation is eternal and should shape how they live their faith daily.

In this heartfelt episode, we gather to honor the life of Howard Johnson. A devoted husband to Paula, a beloved father to Barry and Marsha, and a cherished grandpa to Connor, Howard was a man whose warmth and outgoing nature touched everyone he met. He found joy in conversation, always ready to share a story or lend a helping hand.

Howard’s love for his family was evident in everything he did. He took pride in seeing his children graduate from the same high school he once attended and made sure his work schedule allowed him to be present for their milestones. A skilled handyman, he passed down his knowledge to those around him, leaving a lasting impact through both his wisdom and generosity.

One of his greatest passions was trains, a love he shared with Barry through train shows and photography adventures. In his retirement, he found peace at the beach and town dock, watching boats, observing birds, and capturing stunning sunsets with his camera. Music and the simple joys of life brought him happiness, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Though Howard is no longer with us, we find comfort in knowing he is at peace in heaven, where Jesus calls us to be. His spirit lives on in the memories he created, the lessons he shared, and the love he gave so freely. Join us as we reflect on his life, celebrating the life of a man who touched so many hearts.

In this podcast episode, Tim breaks down the profound meaning of the phrase, “The Lord is near,” from Philippians, which encapsulates four key Christian doctrines: divine omnipresence, eschatology (the end of the world), the incarnation, and the means of grace. These doctrines reveal God's presence everywhere, the imminence of His judgment, His incarnation as Jesus to save humanity, and His ongoing presence through baptism, communion, and the Word.

The omnipresence of God assures that He is always with us, observing and sustaining all creation. Eschatology reminds us of God’s coming judgment, urging readiness while offering comfort in Jesus’ sacrifice. The incarnation demonstrates God’s nearness in Jesus Christ, who became human to redeem us. The means of grace—God’s Word and sacraments—ensure His presence in our lives, bringing forgiveness and salvation.

These truths inspire three blessings: joy, arising from God’s love and nearness; confidence, knowing God hears and answers prayers; and peace, as Jesus’ sacrifice secures forgiveness, victory over death, and a hopeful future.

In conclusion, Christians are called to rejoice, trust, and live in peace, assured of God’s unchanging love and presence.

In this sermon, Tim emphasizes the unchanging yet unpredictable nature of God, using the cycles of seasons as a metaphor for His immutability. While the seasons change predictably in broad strokes but not in specifics, God also remains consistent in His promises—such as forgiveness, sustaining the Church, and Christ’s return—though the details of how He fulfills them aren't fully known. This reflects God’s divine immutability.

Tim warns us against sin, highlighting issues like dishonesty, oppression, and idolatry, which anger God as much today as in biblical times. Despite human sinfulness, God’s love remains steadfast. He refines His people like a silversmith, using life experiences and His Word to purify them.

Ultimately, the message reassures believers that because God does not change, His forgiveness, provision, and promises are reliable. This certainty allows believers to trust in His Word and anticipate Christ’s return with confidence and hope.

The Advent season... a time of preparation and anticipation, distinct from the celebrations of Christmas. While Christmas focuses on the birth of Jesus, Advent invites us to reflect on why Jesus came into the world and what his mission means for us. It’s a season of looking ahead, much like Lent before Easter, to consider the profound significance of God becoming flesh to dwell among us. During Advent, we remember that Jesus’ life was not only about his birth but also about his ultimate purpose: to bring justice, righteousness, and salvation through his death and resurrection.

Central to this reflection is the concept of God’s name, which represents not merely a title but his character, reputation, and revelation to humanity. Jesus came "in the name of the Lord," fully embodying God’s mercy, justice, and love. Tim explains how believers are called to carry God’s name in their words and actions, living as witnesses to his grace and truth. While humans often fall short in representing God’s character, Jesus’ sacrifice secures our reconciliation with him, making it possible to reflect his love even in our imperfection.

As we begin Advent, the story of Palm Sunday reminds us of Jesus as the King who came to fulfill God’s promises and bring salvation. His triumphal entry into Jerusalem foreshadowed the peace and glory he would achieve through his sacrifice. This Advent season challenges us to consider how we share God’s name and reputation with others through our lives, as we prepare to celebrate the birth of the Savior who came to give us eternal life and peace.

In this podcast episode, Tim starts off discussing his in-laws stay at an all-inclusive resort. He provides this example to state, just as guests enjoy endless amenities within the resort's boundaries, so too does God freely provide all we need within His kingdom. Then presented is the challenge for us to remain in God’s love, building our faith, praying in the Spirit, and faithfully fulfilling our callings as we wait for Jesus’ return.

Through God’s Word, we are equipped to address our doubts, rescue others from spiritual danger, and extend mercy to those caught in sin—all while recognizing our shared need for God’s grace. Ultimately, Tim will encourage us to trust in God’s promise to keep us in His love and present us blameless in His presence with great joy. Let’s listen together as Tim unpacks Jude’s powerful message of hope and perseverance.

In this sermon based on Mark 10:28-45, Tim reflects on how Jesus' disciples misunderstood his mission and the nature of his kingdom. As they journeyed to Jerusalem, the disciples expected to enter the city with honor and influence, as trusted followers of a victorious leader. They believed their sacrifices for Jesus would earn them special rewards, much like an example stated by Tim: purchasing a first-class ticket expecting certain privileges but being re-assigned to a different class. However, Jesus repeatedly explained that his mission involved suffering, sacrifice, and service, not personal gain or glory. The disciples, like many today, misinterpreted Jesus' promise of receiving "a hundred times" what they had given up, thinking it referred to material rewards rather than the spiritual and communal blessings found in the church.

This sermon warns us against approaching the Christian church with expectations of entitlement or personal benefit. Just as James and John sought positions of honor, many believers today may feel entitled to influence or recognition based on their contributions or involvement in the church. However, the true call of discipleship, as modeled by Jesus, is one of humility, service, and sacrifice. Christ came not to be served but to serve, and the Christian life is meant to follow this example. The church is not a place for seeking personal glory but a community where believers support one another and reflect the selfless love of Christ.

This Sunday sermon, based on Mark 10 verses 28-45 , was preached at Grace of God Lutheran Church on October 20, 2024. This sermon is preached by Pastor Timothy J. Walsh, a member of WELS (Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod). Scripture selections come from the New International Version.

In this sermon based on Ephesians 5:21-6:4, Tim reflects on how our beliefs about family life can be shaped by experiences and media, comparing that to biblical teachings. This sermon emphasizes key biblical principles: husbands should love their wives as Christ loves the Church, wives should submit to their husbands, and parents, especially fathers, should lead their children's spiritual growth.

Tim then addresses the issue of divorce, highlighting that God does not approve of it except in a specific context of sin, and stresses the importance of forgiveness and grace through baptism. Ultimately, the message encourages following God's design for family life, rooted in love, forgiveness, and mutual respect.

In this sermon, Tim reflects on the complexity of human nature, especially in the context of faith; using the Latin word "simul" (meaning "at the same time") to explore how Christians are simultaneously sinners and saints. Through faith in Jesus, believers are declared saints, holy in God's sight, despite their ongoing battle with sin. This dual reality of being a sinner and a saint creates tension but also provides hope through God's grace, as exemplified by biblical figures like Miriam and Aaron, who despite their sins, were still chosen as God's leaders.

True wisdom, as described by James in the New Testament, comes from God and leads to actions that reflect love, peace, and humility. This divine wisdom does not justify means through ends but calls for pure, peace-loving conduct. Leaders in the church, though sinner-saints themselves, are called to exemplify this wisdom, living lives that reflect God's grace and love.

This Sunday sermon, based on James 3 verses 13-18, was preached at Grace of God Lutheran Church on September 22, 2024. This sermon is preached by Pastor Timothy J. Walsh, a member of WELS (Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod). Scripture selections come from the New International Version.

In this episode, Tim underscores the importance of spiritual realities in shaping our response to distress, drawing from the story of Elisha in 2 Kings 6:8-17. When human support fails, as seen in the apostle Paul's final imprisonment, God's presence remains steadfast. Paul, despite being abandoned by his fellow Christians, found strength in the knowledge that the Lord was with him. This teaches us that even when people fail us, God's support is unwavering, and He will ultimately bring us safely to His heavenly kingdom.

Elisha's story further illustrates that human efforts are limited, especially when faced with spiritual challenges. When the king of Aram attempted to overpower God's influence through military might, Elisha knew that God's power and protection were far greater. Even though Elisha's servant initially feared the surrounding army, his eyes were opened to see the angelic forces protecting them. This teaches us to trust in God's unseen protection, reminding us that spiritual forces are at work beyond our understanding, and that God's angels guard us through every trial.

This Sunday sermon, based on 2 Kings 8 verses 6-17 , was preached at Grace of God Lutheran Church on August 4, 2024. This sermon is preached by Pastor Timothy J. Walsh, a member of WELS (Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod). Scripture selections come from the New International Version.

In this episode on Luke 3, Tim delves into the ways God provides for our daily needs, drawing on biblical teachings from both the Old and New Testaments. In Proverbs 30:8-9, Agur prays for neither riches nor poverty but only his daily bread, illustrating a balanced reliance on God. This sentiment is mirrored in the Lord's Prayer, where Jesus teaches his followers to ask for their daily bread, emphasizing dependence on God's provision. The contrast between Herod's lavish, self-indulgent feast and Jesus' miraculous feeding of the five thousand further underscores the idea that true sustenance and abundance come from divine, not earthly, sources.

He provides through creation itself, as seen in the natural growth of food and the sustenance offered by the earth. Parents feed their children, employers pay wages, and governments sometimes step in to ensure people’s needs are met. These layers of provision all trace back to God’s overarching care. Even our ability to work and earn a living is viewed as a gift from God, intended not just for personal gain but also to enable us to help those who are less fortunate, fostering a sense of communal responsibility.

Tim concludes by highlighting the importance of sharing and mutual support within the Christian community. Just as the food for the feeding of the five thousand came from one boy’s offering and was distributed among many, believers are encouraged to share their resources with those in need. This act of sharing reflects God’s provision through community and emphasizes that both those who have plenty and those who have little depend on God’s grace.

In this episode on Hebrews 13:7-8, 15-21, Tim emphasizes the distinction between needs and wants, using children's desires as an example. Maturing involves learning to distinguish between the two. The book of Hebrews encourages spiritual maturity, comparing it to physical growth, and calls believers to remember their spiritual leaders who taught God's Word. The importance of good leadership in spiritual growth is highlighted, contrasting with the negative impact of abusive leaders and neglectful environments, like Nicolae Ceaușescu's 1980s system of orphanages in Romania.

Tim stresses that God, our ultimate spiritual parent, ensures we have access to His Word and good leaders. True needs, such as daily provision and spiritual nourishment, are met by God, unlike mere wants like independence or material wealth. The unchanging nature of Jesus assures that just as God provided for past leaders, He will provide for us. Ultimately, what believers need from God is His Word, which brings spiritual rebirth and growth, equipping them to do His will.

In this episode, Pastor Tim emphasizes the reliability of God, contrasting it with the unreliability of things people often worship, like money, health, etc. He refers to Augustine's critique of worshiping multiple unreliable gods, highlighting the need for the never lying, eternal God who offers eternal life through Jesus Christ.

As described by Paul the Apostle in his letter to Titus, a pastor's job is to further the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth, which leads to godliness. Paul outlines three expectations for pastors: they must teach according to the Bible, live lives reflecting God's character, and build up new leaders.

These expectations ensure that pastors faithfully preach Jesus Christ's message, model a life of faith and love, and nurture future church leaders. Congregations have the right to hold their pastors to these standards, as they are essential for spiritual growth and leadership within the church.

In this episode, Tim discusses the story of Peter’s denial and Paul's confrontation to him. When Jesus was arrested on Maundy Thursday, Peter denied knowing Him three times out of fear for his own life.

Fast forward twenty years to Antioch, where Paul rebukes Peter publicly for his hypocrisy. Paul says, "I have been crucified with Christ," highlighting Peter's fear of standing alongside Jesus and his failure to fully embrace the Gentile Christians.

This disagreement was crucial for the early church. After being miraculously freed from prison, Peter initially embraced the Gentile Christians in Antioch but later withdrew under pressure from Jewish Christians, leading to division. Paul confronted Peter, emphasizing that justification comes through faith in Jesus Christ, not by observing the law.

Tim then points out Peter's eventual acceptance of Paul's correction which helped the church address broader issues about the role of Jewish Law in Christianity, leading to a united front in proclaiming the Gospel.

In this episode guest preacher Mark Birkholz, a WELS Mission Counselor from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, delivers a sermon discussing Mark 6:1-6, where Jesus visits his hometown with his disciples and teaches in the synagogue on the Sabbath. The locals are astonished by his wisdom and miracles but are skeptical due to their familiarity with his background as a carpenter and his family. They take offense at him, leading Jesus to remark that a prophet is honored everywhere except in his own town and among his relatives.

Mark explains that Jesus, being human and obedient to his parents, faced skepticism from those who knew him. Despite this, he was a legitimate speaker in the Jewish community according to their customs, being 30 years old, the same age as when he was baptized. The skepticism stemmed from the locals' perception of him as just a regular person, not divine. Jesus confronted skepticism and tough situations without resorting to violence. His perfect life and sacrificial death for the forgiveness of sins emphasizes that he lived a human life but ultimately provided salvation, offering his perfect life to us as he calls us his children.

This Sunday sermon, based on Mark 6 verses 1-6, was preached at Grace of God Lutheran Church on July 8, 2024. In this episode Tim delivers a sermon discussing Mark 4:35-41, where Jesus calms a storm, astonishing his disciples. Despite their experience as sailors, the disciples are overwhelmed by the storm’s intensity and question if Jesus cares about their safety. When they wake him, Jesus rebukes them for their fear and calms the storm, leaving the disciples terrified of his power.

Tim explores the nature of fear and faith, distinguishing between fear of danger, which leads to fleeing or freezing, and fear of God, which entails trusting in His power and love. He explains that the disciples' fear revealed their lack of trust in Jesus’ care. True fear of God, Tim emphasizes, involves faith and trust in His love, even amidst life’s storms. He highlights that the disciples did the right thing by turning to Jesus in their fear, and encourages us to do the same, trusting that Jesus is with us through all trials.

God emphasizes the importance of keeping promises, regardless of whether the other party deserves it. Breaking promises, leads to severe consequences. This principle applies to various aspects of life, such as marriage and employment, where loyalty and commitment are paramount.

The parable concludes with God’s promise of restoration through Jesus, a descendant of David. Jesus, by humbling himself and remaining obedient, fulfilled God’s promises and achieved his rightful place on the throne. This highlights that God keeps has promises and values loyalty.

In our lives, keeping promises reflects God’s character. Though promises might seem insignificant, they are opportunities to demonstrate faith and integrity. As Christians, let us be known for our loyalty and trustworthiness, embodying God’s unwavering faithfulness.

Lets explore the concept of Sabbath and what God desires from us on this holy day. It begins by recounting the Old Testament story from Numbers 15, where a man was executed for gathering wood on the Sabbath, highlighting the serious nature of breaking this commandment. This punishment, however, seems harsh and raises questions about God's intentions.

The sermon explains that the Sabbath commandment was given to remind the Israelites of their freedom from slavery in Egypt and to ensure rest for everyone, including servants and animals. It was about trusting God's provision rather than self-reliance.

Tim then compares this with the New Testament account where Jesus and his disciples picked grain on the Sabbath, and Jesus defended their actions, emphasizing mercy and the intent behind the Sabbath.

The true issue, as the sermon outlines, is the hardness of heart. Both the disobedient man in Numbers and the Pharisees in the Gospels displayed stubborn hearts—one through disregard for the law and the others through rigid enforcement without compassion.

Ultimately, Tim concludes that the Sabbath is not about strict adherence to rules but about trusting God and finding rest in gis provision. This rest is not limited to one day but is a continuous, spiritual rest in Christ. The apostle Paul's teachings in Colossians are referenced to illustrate that all laws, including the Sabbath, are fulfilled in Christ. Therefore, God desires us to rest in Him daily, trusting in His care and provision.

Jesus' offer of hope to sinners; the Pharisees' approach offered hope only to the righteous. The fundamental conflict between Jesus and the Pharisees wasn't about specific laws but rather about who deserved hope and salvation.

Jesus encounters Levi (Matthew), a tax collector despised for his perceived betrayal and exploitation of fellow Jews. Despite this, Jesus calls Levi to follow him, and Levi immediately leaves his job to do so. Levi's immediate and unquestioning response highlights the compelling nature of Jesus' call.

Levi then hosts a gathering at his home with other tax collectors and sinners, causing the Pharisees to criticize Jesus for associating with such people. Jesus responds by saying that he came not for the righteous but for sinners, comparing his role to that of a doctor who is needed by the sick, not the healthy.

The Pharisees' refusal to see their own sinfulness and need for Jesus' message is likened to patients denying a critical diagnosis. In contrast, sinners who acknowledge their brokenness find hope and salvation in Jesus.

Tim emphasizes that Jesus' call to follow him extends to all sinners, and that righteousness is found not in self-perceived purity but in trusting in Jesus. It encourages believers to embrace their identity as sinners redeemed by Christ, who offers true hope and reconciliation with God.

What is the meaning of baptism? In this episode we learn how baptism is not about just fulfilling a command but is a gift from God that makes one a child of God. Through baptism, individuals receive salvation and are adopted into God's family, as illustrated by biblical passages and teachings of Jesus and Paul.

Baptism is described as an act of God’s grace, where the Holy Spirit works to bring believers into the kingdom of God. In conclusion, Tim highlights the loving and transformative relationship believers have with God, as their heavenly Father, through baptism.

Ezekiel 37 presents, the vision of dry bones, where God shows Ezekiel a valley of bones, representing the spiritual death of the Israelites. These people were killed by God as a punishment for their sins, including idolatry and oppression. The vision is a metaphor for the spiritual desolation of the exiled Israelites, who felt abandoned and without hope.

God's punishment for sin is death, which can seem harsh, but it stems from human rejection of God. This rejection leads to various sins, from gossip to mass murder, showing how sin escalates from disregarding God’s commands. Tim underscores that God’s ultimate answer to sin is death, but not just physical death. It points to the death of Jesus Christ, who died for the sins of humanity.

The vision also highlights God’s mercy, as he allows the spiritually dead to live, aiming to raise them back to life through repentance and faith. This message presents that the Holy Spirit revives believers through God's Word, bringing them to repentance and faith in Jesus. The ultimate hope is the promise of eternal life and the end of death and suffering, as revealed in the book of Revelation.

In this episode, Tim starts off discussing the modern phenomena of mass production, where identical products are easily replaced, while with God’s creation, every human is unique and irreplaceable. This uniqueness often causes frustration because people naturally desire others to think and act similarly to themselves, as evident in everyday irritations and misunderstandings.

Jesus’ command to love one’s neighbor as oneself, points out the difficulty in this task given within each person’s uniqueness. The early Christians in Corinth, struggled with division and failed to appreciate the beauty of their differences. Apostle Paul's response to this, through his letter in First Corinthians: teaches the importance of love in overcoming division.

Paul emphasized that God intentionally creates differences among people to provide opportunities for love and to bring together diverse gifts within the church community. This is illustrated using the metaphor of the body, where each part contributes uniquely to the whole, reminding the congregation that no member is interchangeable.

Tim concluded with the story of Peter’s sin and redemption, reinforcing that despite our unique sins, all are equally in need of Jesus’ forgiveness. The congregation was reminded that as parts of the body of Christ, they should exhibit mutual care and shared joy, emphasizing unity and the importance of recognizing and valuing each other’s differences through Christ’s love.

There are skepticism that people encounter when browsing social media platforms and even when using AI technologies like ChatGPT. Tim also addresses skepticism people have towards various authorities, including the government, media, and even religious institutions, and contrasts this with the often uncritical acceptance of online content.

This episode discusses the writings of John, one of Jesus' apostles, who personally knew Jesus and whose writings help confirm Jesus' life and teachings. John's emphasis on love and his warnings against deceivers underscore the importance of discernment in whom to trust.

In discussing the criteria for trusting religious leaders today, the message advises that trustworthy pastors should demonstrate a commitment to the teachings of the Bible, acknowledge their own imperfections, focus on Jesus' life, death, and resurrection, and continually direct their congregants to Jesus as the ultimate source of truth and forgiveness.

The sermon ultimately encourages testing the authenticity and integrity of those who claim to represent spiritual truth, using the life and teachings of Jesus as the benchmark for trustworthiness. The message closes by reiterating the importance of a pastor who points people back to Jesus, emphasizing his role as our trustworthy redeemer.

The Easter message profoundly shapes daily life by anchoring it in the reality of Jesus' resurrection. This event, affirms the existence of God and validates Jesus' divinity. Moreover, it promises the resurrection of all believers, offering hope beyond death. The Resurrection not only demonstrates God's power over death but also underscores the significance of Jesus' sacrifice!

This sermon emphasizes that his resurrection infuses daily life with purpose and meaning. It calls believers to engage actively in their roles and relationships, whether as spouses, parents, workers, or employers, with a renewed perspective. While acknowledging human sinfulness, Easter offers forgiveness and reconciliation, extends love and seeks restoration in interactions. Thus, Easter's message extends far beyond the realm of eternity, informing and transforming every aspect of life with Christ at its core.

In a reflection on Maundy Thursday, Tim discusses the unity expressed in the Lord's Supper as outlined in 1 Corinthians 10:16-17. The juxtaposition of contemporary American Christian worship experience with that of the early Corinthian congregation, emphasizing the nature of gatherings and the integration of the Lord's Supper with fellowship meals.

The essence of Communion, representing Christ's sacrifice for forgiveness, remains unchanged. The act of partaking in Communion signifies unity in Christ, symbolized by the sharing of bread and wine. Paul's emphasizes unity within the church despite differences and warns against pride and division. The need to prioritize love over personal agendas and encourage humility in disagreements. Ultimately, the reflection concludes with a prayer for unity, peace, and love among believers.

On Good Friday, Jesus, the Son of God, hung on the cross, speaking only seven times. Jesus' impending death was foretold: to die for the forgiveness of sins out of boundless love. His crucifixion symbolized the removal of sin's barrier between God and humanity, demonstrated by the tearing of the temple curtain.

Through his sacrifice, Jesus reconciled God and humans, eliminating the separation caused by sin. Good Friday, symbolized by the torn curtain, signifies the profound reconciliation between God and humanity.

In this podcast episode, Tim dives into the whole idea of "minimal facts" from 1 Corinthians 15:1-8, 12-27. He kicks it off with some everyday examples, like finding your toddler in a flour mess or seeing your car with a smashed window with the glove box opened; situations where you can pretty much piece together what went down with just a few basic facts.

Basic facts such as Jesus existing, getting crucified, and his tomb turning up empty is what's addressed on Easter.

While common objections may be Jesus not really dying on the cross, crucifixion being the final deal, or the disciples moving the body are questionable when you think about how these guys faced death themselves while sticking to their story about Jesus coming back to life.

In the end, it emphasizes the hope we get from Jesus' resurrection. Rather than just wishful thinking – it's a promise of life after death, giving us something to hold onto even in the face of loss and grief. So yeah, when Tim says, "Happy Easter, friends. He is risen, he is risen indeed!" – it's not just some old saying; it's a message of hope that still rings true today.

In this podcast episode, we explore the events of Palm Sunday through the lens of Mark 11:1-19, delving into what Jesus saw when he entered Jerusalem and approached the temple. As Jesus rode into the city, crowds hailed him with shouts of "Hosanna," a cry for salvation. But what did they expect this salvation to look like?

Some anticipated a political savior who would overthrow Roman oppression, while others saw Jesus fulfilling Old Testament prophecies as the long-awaited Messiah. Yet, Jesus surprised them by not initiating a political uprising but instead by cleansing the temple, driving out money changers and merchants.

Through this act, Jesus revealed his concern for the true purpose of the temple - a place for prayer and worship, not commerce. Today, we understand that while physical temples have their significance, believers themselves are temples of the Holy Spirit. Thus, our lives should reflect God's presence, offering praise and honor.

So, grab your Bible and open your hearts as we embark on this spiritual exploration together. Join us in Mark 11 verses 1-19 as we discuss the savior that we have.

Michael Scott finds himself unable to fulfill a promise to pay college tuition for a group of eager students. Despite the letdown, these students' commitment to their education underscores the influence promises wield.

In dissecting the notion of faith, we discern two meanings: beliefs held and the act of belief itself. While religions offer distinct systems of belief, the essence of faith lies in trust and conviction. It's not merely what we believe, but the trust we place in those beliefs.

God's promises serve as the bedrock of Christian faith, anchoring believers amid life's uncertainties. Through biblical narratives, we witness God's unwavering fidelity to his promises, despite human frailty. His track record of fulfillment validates our trust in his word. As we unravel the Israelites' plight in the wilderness, we confront the misconception that suffering alone can rectify sin. While consequences may deter actions, they fail to address the heart of the issue—the discontent that breeds sin.

Therapy, though valuable in addressing actions, falls short in transforming the underlying motivations that drive sin. Sin, ingrained in our nature, requires a deeper solution.

Enter God's divine intervention—a bronze snake lifted high, prefiguring Jesus Christ. Salvation is not achieved through human efforts or suffering but through faith in God's promise of forgiveness and redemption.

In understanding sin's solution, we unearth the essence of worship—a life of love and devotion to God and our neighbors, born from the faith that springs from His promises.

John and Jane, a married couple have differing views on church attendance. While Jane attends church faithfully, John sees no point in it. Jane believes that going to church makes God happy with her, but John remains skeptical.

The episode explores the common perception that worship is a means to please God. However, it challenges this notion by examining Jesus' interactions with the Pharisees regarding fasting and Sabbath observance. Jesus emphasizes that religious practices should serve humanity, not the other way around.

The podcast emphasizes that worship is not about fulfilling obligations to please God but about receiving from Him. It highlights that worship exposes our sinfulness and leads to receiving God's forgiveness and assurance of reconciliation through Jesus.

Furthermore, the episode discusses the significance of the Lord's Supper, emphasizing that it's not a means to earn God's favor but a demonstration of faith in His forgiveness and reconciliation. This episode encourages listeners to reconsider the purpose of worship, shifting the focus from what humans do for God to what God has done for humanity. It emphasizes that true worship centers on receiving God's grace and acknowledging His presence in our lives.

Pastor Tim Walsh's approach diving into Mark 1:14-20, exploring the Gospel of Mark as an "unexpected heist movie". You make ask how does a heist have any relation to the Gospel, well that's a great question to ask! Drawing parallels with classic heist films, Pastor Tim reflects on the crew that Jesus assembles at the beginning of his ministry. The crew, consisting of Simon, Andrew, James, and John, are not professionals but small business owners (fishermen) with a deep interest in spirituality.

We get to dive into the concept of discipleship, emphasizing that the first disciples were individuals who had already known Jesus and supported his ministry before being called into a three-year apprenticeship. The discussion expands to the broader theological concept of the call into ministry, drawing connections between the call experienced by the original disciples and the contemporary call into ministry for church workers.

A crucial point is made to dispel the notion that being a full-time church worker is the only genuine response to the Gospel message. Keep in mind though, Tim emphasizes that church workers are not superior Christians and shares a personal wish for a native Long Islander or even anyone within a community to enter called ministry, highlighting the importance of raising up new leaders within the church overall. Thanks for listening to our podcast feed! This sermon on 1 Samuel 3:1-10 was preached on January 14, 2024, by Pastor Tim Walsh.

In this message, we're introduced to an important, but relatively unknown, figure in Biblical history. Samuel was used by God to turn God's people back to God's Word. Samuel also served to lead Israel in their transition to a monarchy.

In all of the events of Samuel's life, we see God's grace - his gift-giving, undeserved love - at work. God's people did not deserve to have his Word brought freshly to them. The y did not deserve new leaders. Nor do we! Samuel's life showcases God's grace, and it reminds us that when God speaks to us, his love for us brings us new life and assurance for our futures.

In this podcast, Pastor Tim Walsh reflects on the significance of Epiphany, the event marking the sudden appearances of the Magi and Jesus. This underscores the importance of relying on God's Word for guidance. The episode emphasizes the three signs appointed by God where Christ is present: the preaching and teaching of the Bible, baptism, and the Lord's Supper. The narrative explores the limits of human intelligence and the distinct role of worldly governments, using the biblical story of Herod. Ultimately, the podcast encourages listeners to seek Christ where God has promised to be found – in His Word and among His people. Join us in Matthew 2 verses 1-15 as we discuss the power of God's word at work.

There are many young couples showing up, daily, to the temple, to offer sacrifices for their neborn babies. One of the priests sees a couple (Mary and Joseph) with an external image that stated obviously they could not afford much but two birds instead of a lamb and a dove for a sacrifice. Regardless, his job, as a priest, is not to judge people by outward appearance. Surprisingly, a psalm is stated by another worshiper, an older man named Simeon, which the priest takes a while to understand.

Once he finally recognizes it, he understands that, it is not through worldly glory - riches and splendor, visible power - that God does his work; his work happens through his word alone. Through humble sinners, like priests and pastors, serving other sinners. Join us in Luke 2 verses 22-38 as we discuss the power of God's word at work.

This New Years Eve Sunday sermon, based on Luke 2 verses 22-38, was preached at Grace of God Lutheran Church on December 31, 2023. This sermon is preached by pastor Timothy J. There is a specific verse that people typically are familiar with. No, I'm not talking about John 3:16. Remember the very first verse of John stating "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God"? This is the verse. This is the verse that shines forth the doctrine of the trinity. Later in that book, John 8:35, Jesus states "Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” I wish I could type up the entire sermon on the gospel that Jesus is bringing but in this episode, you get to understand the meaning of being God's son more in depth. This ultimate message is based upon Galatians 4 verses 4-7.

So much of our daily lives feels like a string of things happening to us. What’s so important about Christmas? Maybe you’ve never asked that question. Maybe it’s obvious to you. But maybe not. At Christmas, God became someone we can touch. Why did God come down into our world where he could be touched and handled and ultimately killed? The simple reason behind Christmas is stated through the birth of Jesus in Luke 2 verses 1-7: God loves you. God wants you to know that your life is not just a series of random events happening to you. In other words. Jesus was born for you, lived for you, died for you, and rose for you. This episode goes discusses a decree that comes down from Rome. A young family takes a week-long trip. A woman’s labor starts.

This Christmas Eve Sunday sermon, based on Luke 2 verses 1-7, was preached at Grace of God Lutheran Church on December 24, 2023. This sermon is preached by pastor Timothy J. Imagine receiving a divine greeting, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you. Amen." Just as the angel Gabriel spoke these words to Mary, know that you too are "highly favored." In the eyes of God, His love knows no bounds, and if he loves you, dear listener, you are indeed highly favored. In Luke 1 verses 26-38, we find the power of God's divine authority. This episode goes into depth explaining the miracles that occurred due to the power of God's word, which is made in promise. We sometimes fall short into thinking our word holds so much strength rather than proclaiming how mistaken we can be. Lets us dive into this message as we hear God speaking his truths into our hearts!

This Sunday sermon, based on Luke 1 verses 26-38, was preached at Grace of God Lutheran Church on December 19, 2023. This sermon is preached by pastor Timothy J. Walsh, a member of WELS (Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod). Scripture selections come from the New International Version.

John the Baptist. Paul the Apostle. Two important names in biblical history! You could spend a lot of time talking about these two men. In fact, this sermon does a fair amount of exactly that. But when we read the texts of the Bible about Paul and John, we come to realize that Paul and John didn't want people to focus on them. They wanted to disappear, in a way, so that Jesus was the focus of people's attention. This is what Christians still today should expect from their leaders: Humility that focuses not on them, but on Jesus.

This Sunday sermon, based on selected verses from John 1, as well as 1 Corinthians 10, was preached by Pastor Tim Walsh on December 12, 2023, at Grace of God Lutheran Church in Dix Hills on Long Island, NY.

How can you give comfort to someone? Is it by providing a distraction, action, or a sense of compassion? What can you specifically do to comfort someone? The answer we should actually ask is: How does God comfort someone? In Isaiah 40 verses 1-11, we find the answer. This episode goes into depth explaining the general sorts of comfort one may try to provide especially once encountering a life—threatening situation. We sometimes believe that the world will stop functioning if we ought to die but fail to understand, all life and comfort is grounded in God. Who do you think God is? Do we absolutely know what to do with the gifts God has provided us with? The three servants within this parable explore how to make use of the gifts provided by God. In Matthew 25 verses 14-30, we find the answer. This episode goes into depth explaining the opportunities given tailored to their abilities. The perception perceived by one can led to the refusal of carrying out God's will. Jesus tells us to look inside our hearts, see who God is, by asking how we use what he's given us.

Is there going to be a rapture? What is judgement day? Everyone knows that our time on Earth is limited therefore, how do we as Christians prepare for the end? Do we gather something in particular or do we just gather our faith? In 1 Thessalonians 5 verses 1 -11, we find the answer plain and simple. This episode goes into depth to bring out that: Christians prepare for the end by gathering together and encouraging one another to live alert and self-controlled lives marked by faith, hope, and love. That’s all we need, because that is the entirety of life lived in Christ, who is our readiness.

Trying to find your identity in the world may be tough sometimes. An element to this may be trying to understand "Who Are We Because of God?". In 1 John 3 verses 1-3, we find the answer: We Are The Children of God. As children of God, a Christian's hope is understood by living in this reality. We do so while clinging onto God’s promise. This is why by God's grace that is all loving, Jesus calls us brothers and sisters without shame! (Hebrews 2 verse 11) When Christ appears, we will be like him, and live with him in a renewed world where sin and death passes away. We do so while clinging to God’s promise. Once again, our status as his children is not predicated on our righteous actions, but on his grace. This episode goes into depth to bring out that: we are who we are because he is who he is.

At any moment of time have you ever asked: How Can I Be Assured that I Am Saved? In its entirety, theology is approached by this question. In Romans 3 verses 19-30, we acquire the objective meaning of the law: for humans to consciously discover their sinful short-comings with God. To resolve this profound debt, rather than works-based justification, we discover the solution in Jesus Christ. Precisely, righteousness is graciously given through faith in Jesus Christ. As we dive into this episode we develop a stronger relationship with God by understanding that the sacrificial atonement required is nothing that could be done by human alone. We learn the great amount of humbleness we need to respect the fact that God's grace saves us. Grasping this understanding properly determines that no amount of boasting must be done about oneself. Therefore, join us as we explore the sinfulness highlighted to understand the sacrificial atonement provided by the blood of Jesus Christ.

Have you ever came into crossroads with one of the very common Christian dilemmas: How should I react to the ones in authority as a Christian? In Matthew 22, verses 15 to 22, we find an intriguing encounter between Jesus and the Pharisees. They approached him with a challenging question: "Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?", such a simple question delves deep into the complexities of government and faith. In this passage, Jesus offers a profound response, highlighting the importance of rendering to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is God's. Join us as we explore the implications of this encounter and how it has shaped Christian perspectives on the relationship between government and faith throughout history.
