Located in Harney Basin in eastern Oregon, Malheur Lake sits within the 187,000 acres of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, an area that is an important wildlife habitat. Riding next to scenic terrain, such as the Wallowa Mountains, are often in very remote and rural areas. Many of these rural areas in Oregon are active rural areas so while you may be out for a Sunday morning gravel ride, there are many ranchers actively working.

Welcome to Pine Mountain Observatory, nestled in the serene landscapes of Oregon about 34 miles southeast of Bend. In this episode, we unveil the highlights of the night sky with our guest, "astro monk" Alton Luke, Head of Operations at Pine Mountain Observatory and a key figure in the University of Oregon's Physics Department.

Have you ever encountered a jumping cacti? More specifically, the jumping cholla cactus in Arizona? If you have ridden our Rock Art or Bring a Fork routes in Arizona then you have dodged more than a few of these spiky cacti. Do you ever see some bright green, shrubby looking creature on a gravel ride? This organism is likely Letharia Vulpina (and no it does not have magic or poisonous powers like a spell) which is also knows as Wolf Lichen. Bryologist, mycologist, and lichenologist Tim Wheeler works to dedicate his life studies towards nonvascular plants and over the last 20 years now holds 16,000 specimens in his collections (some of which are named after him!) Joining us as Wheeler describes some fascinating tidbits on this creature we commonly call Wolf Lichen.

Travel Oregon recently announced they will fund the nonprofit Dirty Freehub to create 20 to 25 gravel cycling All Access Ride Guides across the state of Oregon. These electronic guides are designed to help adaptive athletes, ebikers or other cyclists such as the 75 year old athlete with aerobic challenges, the person who got busy with life and gained 30 pounds, the person new to cycling, and the families who want to ride together, find great gravel bicycle routes. The routes included in the guides will be shorter in distance, have less elevation gain, not be remote, and use wider roads. Kevin English, Co-Founder and Director of Routes and Technologies, discusses about Dirty Freehub's new addition to Ride Guides called "All Access."

The juniper tree is an iconic tree across Central and Eastern Oregon and yet, in some places they are being removed. Meet TJ Watt, Big Tree Hunter and co-founder of the Ancient Forest Alliance. TJ is an award-winning nature and conservation photographer from British Columbia whose images have helped bolster campaigns to secure the protection of important environmental areas.
In this episode, TJ explains how he got interested in big trees, what it's like to climb into old-growths, and how he came about his Before & After photography series. He also explains his connection to the Big Lonely Doug, the 2nd largest Douglas Fir in Canada that is located in South West Vancouver Island.

In Yachats, Oregon the town pays tribute to indigenous heritage through a story about Amanda. How did this one story come to represent the history of the local tribe? Joanne Kittel started out wanting to donate 1/2 miles of land in Yachats, Oregon to support the Oregon Coast Trail. This turned into 30 years of research and advocacy work about the local tribes. Joanne has written numerous articles on the history of the tribes (with their explicit involvement and approval.).
Listen in as she explains the fascinating story of the indigenous coast tribes, why a key component of the story is focused on a woman named Amanda, and how the tribes remember their heritage today. The interview also includes the stories about how grizzly bears also once roamed this area.
Besides listening to the podcast, we hope you hike the Amanda trail that starts in Yachats and takes you along the coast to the Cape Perpetua Scenic Area.

This podcast explorers how Kristen and Ville Jokinen met and fell in love while scuba diving in Vietnam. Ville then left his native Finland to join Kristen in Oregon, and together they embarked on a life-changing two-year cycling adventure covering 18,000 miles from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, to Ushuaia, Argentina. Despite never having cycled further than around the block, they persevered unrelenting, punishing rain and wind, altitude sickness, dog attacks, bike accidents, and countless flat tires to cycle between the ends of the earth. Kristen and Ville believe that kindness connects us to our shared humanity. They held babies, attended quinceañeras, drank pulque, played soccer, and visited schools. People in Mexico, Central America, and South America invited them into their hearts and homes, allowed them to camp in their fields and farms, and acted as personal tour guides. Kristen and Ville are love on wheels, and who doesn’t need a little more love in their lives?

In March 2022, Chris Cole, a local Bend artist, installed a new sculpture in the Discovery West neighborhood. This new public art in Bend, Oregon is a tribute to Annie Londonderry, the first women to bicycle around the world in 1894 and 1895. The seven foot tall, inverted pyramid design includes decorative bike cogs, ship window, and illuminated image of Annie and a descriptive plaque. Visitors can get a peek into Annie's life and history through the porthole.

In Southern Arizona you might be lucky enough to see Sonoran pronghorns. In this podcast, we learn from Stephanie Fuest, the lead wildlife biologist for the recovery of the endangered Sonoran pronghorn. She walks us through the history of the species in the area, recovery efforts, and best practices should you encounter one while riding. She also explains what is different about them, compared to pronghorns found further north.
Sonoran pronghorns can be found on several of our gravel bike routes in the southwest corner of Arizona that take you through the Cabeza Preita National Wildlife Refuge or the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. They both represent spectacular ecoscapes of Sonoran Desert beauty.

Riding on obscure Tuscon trails, we ran across amazing art that was created out of rocks carefully arranged in the sand to form very cool figures. A huge rabbit, a heart, a wolf howling in a moonlight, a horse, a hummingbird .... we also ran across the original artist, Karen Garno, who was busy working on her latest masterpiece. Listen in on this podcast as Gravel Girl interviews Karen. What inspires Karen to create her amazing art, how does she find all the rocks, and how did she get started. Creating this art is both an artistic and physical endeavor for this 78 year old.
The art is located in the Voyager trail network. You can find this awesome trail network by heading to the entrance of the Voyager RV Park . You'll find a gate right across from the entrance with plenty of room to park. There are 16 works of art as we publish this podcast, along with over 30 miles of trails for you to ride. In this podcast, we talk with John Flemming, who created the High Desert Spiral sculpture located at the intersection of Simpson and Mt Washington just at the entrance to Broken Top in Bend, Oregon. We hear about his inspiration and some of the trials and tribulations of building the tallest sculpture in Bend at 39 feet. “There is something universal about spirals,” says the artist. “In the high desert, we find geological examples of lava cooling into spirals.” He also referenced the way traffic spirals around the roundabout in the Archimedean spiral, which features 60 steel blades that move in the wind. Note the inside of the blades are painted a bright yellow-orange, capturing “the glow you might find inside a volcano or lava flow.”

In Baker City, Oregon there is this old-school historic elementary school, The Churchill School, that has been turned into an eclectic mix of art studio, bike hostel, high-end Airbnb, movie house, and dance studio. We talk with Brian and Corrine Vegter, the curators and owners of this special place.
The Dirty Freehub Team of Kevin and Linda English have stayed here and loved it. They camped out in their van in the back, saw a movie, visited the art gallery (and bought a piece of art), did a number of bike rides right from the school, and had great times talking with Brian and Corrine. Bend, now a town of outdoor enthusiasts, micro-breweries, and technology used to be the center of timber production. The Old Mill District was the heart of this activity with two active mills, one on the east bank of the river and one on the west bank. In the 1950s over 50 rail cars per day would off-load timber into the river. On today's show, long-term resident and bad-ass gravel cyclist Jeff Boulet shares snippets of history with us.

Ryan Ranch area was homesteaded in the 1890s. In the 1920s a berm along the Deschutes River was constructed to keep the river from flooding valuable pasture land. Prior to this, the area historically functioned as an emergent freshwater marsh that was connected to surface flows from the Deschutes River. In the early 2010s, the meadow was reconnected to the Deschutes River through a restoration project. In this podcast, we talk with Peter Sussmann of the National Forest Service to learn more about the project and its impacts on wildlife.

There is a rugged, gnarly gravel road, the only road, through the Grapevine Mountains in Death Valley National Park. It is the Titus Canyon Road - a great gravel bike ride, 25 miles with an elevation loss of over 5000 feet. But ... how did that road come to be? Amy's Bio:
Amy Stuart received a B.S. from Cornell University and a M.S. from Colorado State University in Wildlife Sciences and Management back in the Pleistocene (1977 and 1980). After wandering and working in several western states, she settled down, worked for and recently retired from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife with 30 years of public service. Most of her work was as a fish biologist, but with experiences ranging from ocean salmon management on the coast, to fish habitat biologist in the John Day basin, to hydro project biologist east of the Cascades, and most recently as the Deschutes Basin manager. Amy loves the outdoors and cares about protecting and conserving our incredible resources in central Oregon but also enjoys a variety of recreation such as fishing, hunting, hiking, kayaking, well…..almost everything outside.
